North Carolina vs Florida A&M Game Preview

Why Florida A&M Will Win

The Rattlers should have enough of an offense to make some noise with the downfield passing game about to take its shots.

QB Rasean McKay wasn’t always accurate, but he didn’t turn the ball over and pushed the ball down the field. Top target Xavier Smith is back along with most of the receiving corps, and now they get to crank it all up against a Tar Heel defense that was awful last season.

It gave up a ton of big plays partly because of a defensive front that struggled to get into the backfield, but …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why North Carolina Will Win

The team might have fixed the glitch in the offseason with help from the transfer portal at defensive end, to go along with the veterans already in place.

The defense only has to hold serve at this – if the Florida A&M offense goes off. The Rattler defense – as strong as it was last year – isn’t going to slow down the Tar Heel attack that should be balanced as it matches the other side shot for downfield shot.

The offensive front should take over as the game goes on as the Heels own the ground attack … eventually.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Florida A&M will be good again, and it’s going to be plucky, but North Carolina is looking to start strong after a rough end to 2021.

Here comes the overall offensive explosion on the ground and through the air, and this should be the breakthrough game for a defensive front with a whole lot to prove.

Nebraska vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

So what changed over the last several months?

When we last saw Nebraska win a football game, it had no problem with Northwestern in a 56-7 blowout – that was the only Husker win since September 11th.

How is Northwestern better than last season when nothing seemed to work right in a disastrous 3-9 run?

To start, the offensive line will be a major plus around All-America tackle Peter Skoronski, there should be more of a running game, and the defense got a little help from the transfer portal for the line.

On the other side, there’s a big-time PROVE IT factor for Nebraska.

It went 3-9, too. Head coach Scott Frost wasn’t replaced after another awful year, the defense has to prove it can start taking the ball away, and QB Adrian Martinez is off doing his thing at Kansas State.

If Northwestern can slow this down, keep it low scoring, and make it about who’ll screw up first, it’ll be in good shape against the team that has all the pressure on its side.

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Nebraska Will Win

Nebraska just got more talented.

It’s still missing the playmakers across the board to make a ton of noise nationally, but QB Casey Thompson was a good get from Texas, and the receiving corps got a ton of help with Trey Palmer from LSU, Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda from New Mexico State, and Marcus Washington from Texas. The defense filled in a few spots and helped boost up the depth.

The biggest change is with the style, getting offensive coordinator Mark Whipple over from Pitt – he helped make Kenny Pickett a ton of money.

Get ready for a far more dangerous passing game, and it starts with hitting a Northwestern secondary that doesn’t return anyone who came up with a pick in 2021.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Really? You’re going to pick against a guy named Fitzgerald in Ireland?

Northwestern and Nebraska were supposed to go to Dublin in 2020, but a global pandemic had something to do with that getting moved. Now the two kick off the Big Ten season in Week 0, and it’s massive for both teams.

Northwestern has to show that the problems of 2021 are well in the past and the style, toughness, and line play can be enough to get back to a high level.

Nebraska has to show that all the changes under Frost were enough to start winning.

Don’t expect anything pretty.

The Northwestern lines will be strong from the start as Fitzgerald’s squad slows things down to a dead stop at times. Nebraska won’t have the running game to control the clock, and the third down conversions won’t be there on a consistent basis.

However, Nebraska will hit two deep plays in the second half to finally start to pull away a little bit. Northwestern will have its chances late, but its fourth quarter drives will stall as the Huskers get out with a stronger-that-it-will look win.

Charlotte vs Florida Atlantic Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

This should be a better team than the one that got rolled by Florida Atlantic 38-9 at home last season.

Eight starters return to an offense that’s going to be sharper and better through the air – Chris Reynolds is a good veteran passer who’s in for a big season.

The Florida Atlantic defense is getting boost from the transfer portal, but the pass rush is unproven and the secondary is all but starting over around star safety Teja Young. Reynolds should go off.

However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Will the Charlotte defense be better right away?

There’s a ton of experience back, but the production wasn’t there, several of top tacklers are gone, and this should be a work in progress for a D that was miserable at coming up with third down stops and didn’t to a thing against the run.

The Florida Atlantic offensive line should take over with four starters back to keep QB N’Kosi Perry clean against the reworking Charlotte pass rush. The receivers are in place, the running game should be strong out of the gate, and defensively, the linebackers are good enough to keep Reynolds from doing too much on the move.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Florida Atlantic offense was almost perfectly balanced in last year’s blowout win over the 49ers, and the defense didn’t allow anything on the ground.

It’s not going to be quite that easy for the Owls – the Charlotte passing game will be more productive – but it’ll be a good start to the season with a strong Conference USA home win.

Ahhhhhh yes, Week 0. The soft opening.

The college football season gets rolling for real next week, but first we all get up to speed with a modest slate of games that matter. There might not be a ton of massive games – or any – and there isn’t anything for the College Football Playoff chase.

But it’s college football, it counts, and you’re going to enjoy it.

There’s a limited number of games – usually this piece tries to pick from all the glut of options for a normal Saturday – but here are 5 best bets just in case you choose to invest this weekend.

We’ll start out with two for the price of one …

5. Wyoming at Illinois & Northwestern vs Nebraska point totals

LINE Wyoming vs Illinois 44, Northwestern vs Nebraska 49.5
Point Total Picks Under

No argument if you want to go over on these two games – you don’t win friends with the under – but …

It’s Week 0. We’re all guessing without any preseason to go off of. It’s a mistake to assume that 2021 will carry over to 2022 – new teams, new coaches in some sports, new schemes – but the general Week 0 theme is to go with what you know until proven otherwise.

Wyoming, Illinois, Northwestern, Nebraska – can any of them score?

44 is an obnoxiously low college football point total – 24-21 and you lose – considering it’s always possible that one team can hit that by itself, but until they show us something different, Wyoming and Illinois might struggle to get there.

This is more about the Cowboys. They rose up and rocked against a Utah State team that didn’t need the game late last year, and they hung up 52 on a Kent State defense that was but a polite suggestion, but they lost their key skill guys through the transfer portal, should bring a solid defense, and Illinois isn’t going to be an offensive juggernaut.

The Illini will do their part, though. Wyoming is going to struggle.

Northwestern and Nebraska in Dublin, Ireland, almost certainly isn’t going to be a firefight.

The Wildcats will try to grind this down, the defense should be far better than the version that gave up 56 to the Huskers last year, and 50 between the two might be asking for a lot.

After the big day against Northwestern, Nebraska failed to hit 30 points the rest of the way.

UConn vs Utah State Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

New head coach Jim Mora Jr. hit the transfer portal hard to give the Huskies some actual options at various positions and enough depth to hold up better.

Getting QB Ta’Quan Roberson from Penn State is a plus, there’s experience all across the offense, and on the other side the linebacking corps should be strong enough to hold up against a Utah State offense whose running game might be held in check.

The first step to making UConn football okay is finding one thing that works. Third down conversion were an issue last year, but any control of the clock will be a big deal.

Most importantly, the Huskies have to come up with takeaways to stay alive in this – last year’s Utah State offense turned it over a bit too much.

For all of its problems, the UConn secondary might take a big step forward with all the experience returning.

However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Utah State Will Win

Welcome to the Utah State passing game.

The Aggies are going to be more explosive and more consistent. There will be a few good UConn defensive stops just because it’s Week 0 – Utah State won’t be razor-sharp quite yet – but QB Logan Bonner should get more time to work.

The Aggie O line struggled in pass protection, but it’s a veteran group that should be more cohesive. It’ll look great against a revamped UConn defensive front that might need a little while to get going.

Get a few scores, and everything should be okay because …

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UConn will be better, but it might take a bit before the offense can figure out how to put points on the board.

Last year’s offense averaged just 15.6 points per game, failing to come up with more than 17 in five of the last six games.

It won’t be a perfect performance by the Aggies, but it won’t have to be.

WKU vs Austin Peay Game Preview

Why Austin Peay Will Win

The Governors know how to play pass defense.

The 2021 version was second in the FCS in picked off passes – coming up with 19 interceptions – for a D that dominated the turnover margin all season long.

WKU is going to throw and throw some more, but there’s a learning curve compared to last year’s team with most of the stars gone. Austin Peay should have the offense that can keep up the pace – even with a few key parts gone – and WKU’s pass rush will need some time to find the right rotation.

As long as the offense can win the turnover battle, though, the team should stay alive. However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why WKU Will Win

Austin Peay needs to come up with new starters on offense who can shine. it loses its top two runners, QB Draylen Ellis is done, and three of the top four receivers have to be replaced. That’s a problem against what’s coming from the WKU attack.

Yeah, the Hilltoppers have to replace QB Bailey Zappe, WR Jerreth Sterns, and offensive coordinator Zach Kittley. Now it has to replace West Virginia transfer Jarret Doege – he shockingly entered the transfer portal – but West Florida transfer Austin Reed is ready to take over and get the O going.

The Austin Peay defense might be good again, but the good passing games last year were able to bomb away. As long as Reed gets time to work, he should be able to keep things moving. Limit the turnovers, take the midrange throws that are there, repeat.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Austin Peay isn’t going to be an easy pushover, but the defense will have an issue with WKU’s gashing runs while it’s paying attention to Reed and all that’s coming in the passing game.

The Hilltoppers will get off to a hot start, struggle for a bit, and then put it away with two crisp drives and some takeaways as the Governors try to press.

It’ll be a fun game to keep an eye on with lots of yards and scoring. WKU needs to gear up before going to Hawaii and Indiana.

Illinois vs Wyoming Game Preview

Why Wyoming Will Win

Does Illinois have an offense yet that can scare anyone?

The Illini were dead last in the Big Ten in passing, 115th in the nation in scoring, and 112th in total offense – and it was all worse than the numbers.

There’s hope with new offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. and a likely new starting quarterback in Tommy DeVito from Syracuse, but this isn’t going to be the type of attack that walks onto the field and throws 45 up on the board.

Wyoming loves to play grinding, low scoring games that come down to ball control and tough defense, but …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Illinois Will Win

Few teams were hammered harder by the transfer portal than Wyoming.

Others can withstand a talent drain, but Wyoming isn’t Alabama – it hurts to lose WR Isaiah Neyor (Texas), Xazavian Valladay (Arizona State), its top quarterback options, a slew of key defensive backs, and on and on.

It’s not going to take much for the Illini to put this out of reach. Points might have been hard to come by last year, but two first quarter scores might be enough to get this done.

Score early, rely on the running game, assume the opposing offense can’t do a whole lot to bomb its way back, and beat Wyoming at its own game by being more grindy.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is first time Wyoming has faced a Power Five program since opening up the 2019 season with a stunning 37-31 win over Missouri. However, the last win over a Power Five program on the road at Ole Miss in 2005.

This year’s Cowboy team might be well coached and won’t cheat anyone on the effort, but it’s going through too much of an overhaul. This won’t be anything pretty as Illinois will take over on the lines in the second half.

The running game will have a rough time early, but the dam will break half way through the third quarter.

North Texas vs UTEP Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

Can North Texas keep it all going after winning five straight regular season game to close out 2021, including a 20-17 win over UTEP?

The quarterback room got stronger with more options to push Austin Aune, the running backs are there around a veteran offensive line, and the defense should be just good enough to hold up against a UTEP offense that’s not going to explode.

The Miners lost their star deep threat – Jacob Cowing is about to do big things for Arizona – for a passing game that wasn’t exactly razor sharp. On the other side, UNT might have its best linebacking corps in the Seth Littrell era and should hold up well against the run, but …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP isn’t going to get fancy, but it should be effective.

It’s going to use its suddenly-strong offensive front to try pounding away. The running backs are deep and good, three all-stars return on the O line, and Gavin Hardison is a veteran quarterback who’ll keep pushing the ball deep – the UNT secondary is a bit of a question mark – even without Cowing.

The linebacking corps is great, Praise Amaewhule is one of the best pass rushers in the conference, and the secondary got a whole bunch of help from the transfer portal.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a relatively low-scoring battle – sort of like last year’s meeting – with the UTEP defense keeping the North Texas ground game that led Conference USA last season from going off.

The Mean Green were stuffed for under four yards per carry by the Miners last year and won, but they should be a wee bit better and the passing game will connect on the third down plays the other side won’t.

It might not be the most scintillating game, but it’ll be close and it’ll get interesting late.

Vanderbilt vs Hawaii Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Hawaii program is going through a bit of a gut job.

New head coach and Rainbow Warrior passing legend Timmy Chang should be able to restore the glory soon enough, but it’s going to take a whole lot of work to put together the depth, the talent, and the rotation to be able to hold up.

The passing attack should be good – there are good options at quarterback and the receivers should be fine – but the lines might not be there to hold up.

Vanderbilt isn’t exactly Georgia in the trenches, but the starting 11 on defense is fine. Hawaii won’t run the ball a lick, and the Commodore secondary has the potential to be an early strength.

However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Hawaii Will Win

The Vanderbilt secondary can hit, but can it bust up passes?

Hawaii is going to let it rip. It’s going to move quickly, spread the ball around, and keep it as simple as throwing the ball to open spaces so the receivers can do things on the move.

It sounds easier than it’s going to be – of course – but the Vanderbilt pass rush is questionable, and the offense has to prove it has the pop to keep up if this thing all works right away under Chang.

It sounds more mystical than it is, but weird things happen when teams go to Hawaii.

Maybe it’s because no one cares about silly things like football when teams see how people are supposed to live, or maybe it’s the time change, or maybe it’s because it’s impossible to pivot from vacation to smash mouth when Hawaii brings the effort.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Rainbow Warrior passing game will have its moments, but Vanderbilt will pound away as much as it’s able to against a Hawaii D that was the worst in the Mountain West last year. There’s toughness up front for the Rainbow Warriors, but the secondary is going to be a work in progress.

Nothing with Vanderbilt is ever easy, but it’s an SEC team. It needs to act like it.
