What is next for these teams

Everyone has a bold take or kneejerk reaction to the start of a season and we will be doing that each and every week going through something for each team or game of the Mountain West football season.

Week 0 saw five Mountain West teams in action and each one we can bring out the blow torch for hot takes, and some may not even seem all that out there.

Wyoming needs to can Craig Bohl

Hear us out on this one. Bohl’s contract was renewed in 2020 to add one year to his existing contract that will keep him in Laramie through the 2024 season. That is only two more seasons which is not a lot of time.

Having a coach with two or fewer seasons left on a contract is not ideal for recruiting.

Going out on the trail and trying to get players to come to a school with the possibility of their coach not being around during their time is not a good look and will hurt recruiting.

Bohl has shown no ability to be even the most little bit creative on offense or knows how to use a quarterback. He even tries to claim stake to Josh Allen even going as far as to use him as a recruiting tool this offseason.

There is a legitimate possibility if he doesn’t get to a bowl game this year he is fired. He has gone to a bowl game in four of his eight seasons but this team is just frustrating to watch. Defense sends player to the NFL who do really well and even some offensive players with nine total being drafted since 2014.

Nine players draft picks ties them with Fresno State and Colorado State while being behind only Boise State and San Diego State.

UNLV will lead the Mountain West in scoring

The Rebels scored 52 points against Idaho State with a great performance and moral boost this team needs.

This is a hot take post so what else do you want from us? Rational thought that UNLV will be improved and might have the best point differential gain from 2021 to 2022? Is that what you want us to say?

No, today we celebrate UNLV having the best offense in all of the land so far in FBS.

Yes, Calvin Tyler, Jr. Is The Best RB

There are a lot of good running backs in the conference and this offseason I’ve been mentioning Tyler as one to watch for as a major player. Last year, he was one of the best backs before getting hurt.

In the opener against UConn, Tyler got off to a great start taking the bulk of the carries with 33 for 161 yards and also caught a pair of passes for 33 yards. He did not reach the end zone but he is off to a great start.

Hawaii’s Rebuild Is Uh… In Trouble

Timmy Chang‘s first outing as a head coach did not go well and maybe we can do a dual overreaction which is Vanderbilt is going to be a player in the SEC this year by putting up 63 points.

The Warriors offense seems to be OK at least moving the ball but not putting up points. They rotated quarterbacks with Brayden Schager and Joey Yellen who together combined for a just decent 250 yards on just 4.5 yards per attempt.

Hawaii couldn’t keep drives going by being 0-4 on fourth downs and just 5 of 16 on third downs.

The defense obviously was bad. They allowed Vandy to rush for 9.2 yards per play and 7.0 per pass. There is a legitimate chance that this Hawaii team could be the worst in the conference.

Early Star For Best Defender Is From Reno?

The Nevada Wolf Pack defense made a lot of plays against New Mexico State. The start of the show was Wake Forest transfer defensive back Isaiah Essissima who had a pair of interceptions and two tackles in the win.

But why bury the lede with the real hero for this Nevada defense and it is the Turnover Trident.

These turnover things are all great but the Wolf Pack might have something with their defense and the addition of Essissima who in Week 0 is being the best defender in the conference.

What will it take to find a signal-caller

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl has actually and technically coached two quarterbacks who went in the top 10 of the NFL Draft. At North Dakota State he coached Carson Wentz during his career but it was the early years with the Bison.

The other is Josh Allen who is now considered one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and went No. 7 overall.

Well… since then the quarterback since Allen left wasn’t great. Also, if we are being honest, Allen was really good but not great during his time in Laramie. He was labeled with potential and it has paid off in the NFL.

Since Allen moved on in 2017, these are the Cowboys who have thrown a pass in a brown and gold uniform.

These are the names:

Only Smith finished his career at Wyoming but he had 136 career pass attempts and just two in the post-Allen era. Williams, Chambers, and Vander Wall all transferred out of the program.

To be fair, there was some injury issues with Chambers and Williams but the overall production was never there. The Wyoming passing offense was usually in the bottom third and its best passing stat was in the 2020 shortened year and that is when they were sixth in yards per attempt.

Help Wanted Advertisement

This offseason Bohl and the Wyoming staff went bold and touted the coaching of Allen under his tenure to try to lure in transfer quarterbacks.

“The college football landscape is changing with the one-time transfer rule and NIL. Our staff anticipated this movement and have a clear vision to navigate these uncharted waters. After a successful early signing day, Cowboy Football will address the need to sign a quarterback via the transfer portal or junior college.

“We believe this is a great opportunity for a transfer quarterback to come in and make an impact on our program. We’ve seen that before when we brought in Josh Allen into the program, and we’re excited for the next chapter of Cowboy Football.”

The Cowboys were able to land Peasley from Utah State and he was named the starter. In the opener against Illinois, he was not the answer at all and was just 5 of 20 for 30 yards and an interception.

Peasley did have four rushes for 76 yards but that has been the norm the past few years with quarterbacks running more than passing.

This leads us to this meme about Bohl needing to move on from saying he coached Allen to a top-10 NFL Draft pick.

Bohl also decided to hire his offensive coordinator from Iowa during the 2021 offseason. He hired Tim Polasek who was the Hawkeyes offensive line coach to run the offense and coach the quarterbacks.

The Iowa offense is not exactly known to be QB central as they focus on being physical and running the ball, which is fine. However, Bohl is seemingly focused on being a clone of those beefy Big Ten teams and it has not worked.

At some point, coaches who are defensive guys need to let loose and higher an offensive-minded coach and let them run a system that can put up points and move the ball.

There is no way Wyoming fans can endure another season where their quarterback play is subpar where they struggle to pass above 50%.

Since Allen left the program, the team has completed over 50% of its passes as a team just one time, only three of the past four full seasons. Their best year was completing just 54.5% of its passes. Basically, it’s a not even a coin flips chance when a Cowboy player throws the ball it will be caught.

Yes, it’s early in the year but the signs are still there that this team does not have a quarterback and Wyoming fans can not be happy.

Nevada Football: Rushing Game And Forcing Turnovers Key In Season Opening Win

Nevada’s rushing offense and its defense forcing five turnovers helped secure the first victory of the Ken Wilson Era on Saturday night.

The Turnover Trident And Strong Run Game Were Featured In Nevada’s Season Opening Win

Led by the running back duo of Toa Taua and Devonte Lee, the Wolf Pack opened up the Ken Wilson era with a 23-12 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday evening. Toa Taua ran for 109 yards on 19 carries while Devonte Lee ran for 61 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns. This contest against New Mexico State was the game that saw the Wolf Pack offense run the ball very well after years of putting up big passing yards under former Coach Norvell’s Air Raid offense.

This game also saw Nevada’s defense force five turnovers against the Aggies and saw the debut the Turnover Trident.

See The Trident In All Its Glory

While the rushing attack and the Wolf Pack defense was forcing turnovers and holding an awesome trident, the passing game left a lot to be desired. Shane Illingworth was named the starting quarterback for Nevada just before the opening kickoff. Illingworth completed 7 of 12 passes for 51 yards. Nate Cox played in the second half of the game and completed 7 of 11 passes for 27 yards but Cox did rush for 33 yards and became a key piece of the rushing offense late in the game.

It was reported by Alex Margulies of Nevada Sports Net that Illingworth’s hamstring was tightening up and that was why Nate Cox took over in the second half at quarterback.

But this game was not about the Wolf Pack throwing the ball all over the field. New Mexico State was one of the worst run defenses in the FBS last season and last night, the Aggies could not stop Nevada’s run offense. As a team the Wolf Pack ran for 179 yards on 45 carries. This game was all about Nevada establishing the run game and being physical on the offensive line. Last night against New Mexico State, the Wolf Pack succeed.

The action in this contest started in the first quarter. New Mexico State moved the ball well on their first two possessions but those possessions yielded zero points. On the first NMSU possession, the Aggies drive ended on a 49-yard missed field goal by Ethan Albertson.

On the Aggies next offensive possession, they went for it on 4th down deep in Nevada territory but NMSU QB Diego Pavia threw an interception to Nevada’s Isaiah Essissima and that drive ended with zero points for the Aggies.

After the New Mexico State turnover, the game was stopped by the referees due to lightning in the area and the delay lasted for roughly 30 minutes. After the delay, both teams exchanged punts and the first score of the game happened for New Mexico State when a snap sailed over Illingworth and he landed on the ball in his own endzone which New Mexico State tagged him and led to the Aggies leading 2-0.

However, on New Mexico State’s next offensive possession, Pavia threw his second interception to Nevada’s Bentlee Sanders. Nevada then converted that interception into a touchdown when they went on a four play, 80-yard drive that ended when Devonte Lee ran for a 32-yard touchdown to put the Wolf Pack up 7-2.

New Mexico State’s following offensive possession ended with another turnover. It happened when Pavia was hit by Nevada’s Dom Peterson and the ball was jarred loose and Peterson recovered the ball deep in NMSU territory. Nevada once again converted the Aggie turnover into points when the Wolf Pack scored on a four yard touchdown run by Devonte Lee that  put them up 17-2 at the half.

In the third quarter, New Mexico State benched Diego Pavia for true freshman Gavin Frakes and the Aggie offense started to make headway. Midway through the third quarter, Frakes led the Aggies down the field and connected with wide receiver Kordell David on a beautifully thrown 10-yard touchdown pass to cut the Wolf Pack lead to 17-9.

Nevada responded back on their next offensive possession with a 13 play, 57-yard drive that ended with Brandon Talton connecting on a 34-yard field goal to extend the Wolf Pack lead to 20-9. But the Aggies with Frakes at quarterback responded with an 11 play, 47-yard drive that was aided by two Nevada defensive holding penalties that extended the Aggie drive. The Wolf Pack defense did hold NMSU to a field goal when NMSU kicker Ethan Albertson converted on a 45-yard field goal to cut the Wolf Pack lead to 20-12.

The Wolf Pack’s next offensive possession saw them lean in on their running attack to close the game out. However, Nevada was faced with a pair of third down situations in their final drive. On 3rd and 11 at the Nevada 29, Nate Cox handed the ball off to Toa Taua and Taua gained 12 yards for the first down. Later in that same drive, Nevada was faced with another third down situation at their own 49-yard line. Cox handed it off to Devonte Lee who bulldozed his way for another first down.

Then disaster almost happened for Nevada late in the game. With a little more than two minutes to go in the game, Nevada QB Nate Cox’s pass was tipped and picked off by NMSUs Bryce Jackson in what looked like a big turnover late to help the Aggies. But the referees ruled the pass an incompletion and the Wolf Pack were given a reprieve.

Four plays later, Brandon Talton connected again on a 38-yard field goal to extend the Nevada lead to 23-12 late in the game. The Aggies last offensive gasp late in the game fell short as Frakes pass was intercepted by Nevada’s Tyson Williams to finally salt the game away for Nevada.

With the win, the Wolf Pack have won their fifth straight season opener and will look to improve their record to 2-0 in their home opener Next Saturday against Texas State.

Mountain West Football: Week 0 Winners And Losers

Who came out ahead and who left something to be desired in the Mountain West after the first Saturday of college football action?

Mountain West Football: Week 0 Winners And Losers

We take a look at the Mountain West’s winners and losers from the first weekend of college football.

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

Encouragements and letdowns from the off-season that was.

College football is back and it feels so good. Week 0 wasn’t so kind to every Mountain West team that played, however, so who came out ahead and who disappointed in the first Saturday of the season?

Winners

1. UNLV quarterback Doug Brumfield

You can say “it was only Idaho State” all you like, but the fact remains it’s been a good long time since any Rebels quarterback looked as sharp as Brumfield did on Saturday afternoon.

In one half of play, Brumfield completed 21-of-25 passes for 356 yards and four touchdowns, the first UNLV player to throw for that many yards since Max Gilliam in 2018. It was impressive enough that head coach Marcus Arroyo cemented him as the starter going forward, so while tougher assignments lie ahead, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic right now that the Rebels have at least figured a few things out.

2. Nevada co-defensive coordinators Kwame Agyeman and Mike Bethea

While the Nevada Wolf Pack have plenty of kinks to work out following their road win over New Mexico State, the rebuilt defense led the way on Saturday night.

Though the Pack was actually outgained by NMSU in terms of total yardage, 303 to 273, they allowed a respectable 5.1 yards per play, allowed only 5-of-12 third down conversions, and created five turnovers that turned into 17 crucial points. The secondary, in particular, made life miserable for Aggies quarterbacks Diego Pavia and Gavin Frakes with four interceptions, including two by Isaiah Essissima, so Agyeman and Bethea should feel good that the early returns on what was expected to be a strength look promising.

3. Utah State running back Calvin Tyler Jr.

The Aggies’ victory over UConn had more than a few shades of many of their early wins in 2021, namely that it took them a while to get going, but Tyler Jr. made sure that Utah State wouldn’t suffer a shocking fate. He handled a career-high 33 carries and ran for 162 yards, chipping in two receptions for 33 yards, as well, with a first-half fumble being the only real blemish in his overall performance. Maybe it was an up-and-down performance, but USU may have figured out they can win in more than one way this year.

Losers

1. Wyoming quarterback Andrew Peasley

Illinois looked like a team that could be much improved in the Big Ten West division after their romp over the Cowboys, but Wyoming looked similarly overmatched because Peasley never came close to getting on track. He overthrew a handful of receivers early, wouldn’t complete his first pass until early in the second quarter, and finished just 5-of-20 for 30 yards with an interception.

Things don’t get much easier for the Pokes from here, so they’ll have to figure out what’s wrong under center yet again if they hope to surprise some people later in the fall.

2. Hawaii’s defense

The braddahhood took one on the chin to start the Timmy Chang era, allowing Vanderbilt to rack up 601 yards of total offense at 8.3 yards per play in the Warriors’ most lopsided loss since 2016. What looked particularly troubling is that the Commodores often had little trouble creating explosive plays with its ground game — four different players had at least one run of 30 yards, but 12 explosive running plays added up to a whopping 302 yards — and Hawaii, in turn, offered little resistance with zero tackles for loss.

3. The clarity of Nevada’s quarterback situation

For as well as the defense played, neither of Shane Illingworth and Nate Cox offered much to suggest they deserved a longer look as Nevada’s starting quarterback. Illingworth got the start and finished 7-of-12 for 51 yards, while Cox came on in relief and completed 7-of-11 passes for 27 yards. The upside, at least, is that neither had any turnovers, but it’d be a shock if next week’s home opener against Texas State wasn’t utilized as another proving ground for both.

A big decision finally made.

The Ken Wilson era of Nevada Wolf Pack football is about to get underway on Saturday night against the New Mexico State Aggies, and one of the last big mysteries on a roster full of them headed into 2022 was finally answered when Shane Illingworth earned the starting quarterback job.

First reported by Alex Marguiles of Nevada Sports Net, Illingworth, the former Oklahoma State quarterback who committed to the Wolf Pack in February as a transfer portal entrant, earned the QB1 role ahead of incumbent Nate Cox after a hotly contested fall camp battle. The 6-foot-6 Norco, California native is a former four-star recruit who saw a fair amount of playing time for the Cowboys as a true freshman and sophomore across the 2020 and 2021 seasons, compiling a 3-0 record as a starter while coming on in relief for Spencer Sanders on other occasions.

In six games at OSU, Illingworth posted a completion rate of 57.5% and threw for 939 yards, 7.8 yards per attempt, with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. Now, he’ll be tasked with replacing Carson Strong, the two-time Mountain West offensive player of the year who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent earlier this year.

Breaking down the win

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

UNLV dismantled Idaho State, 52-21, to begin the 2022 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. This was the way UNLV needed to handle Idaho State in the season opener.

Prior to the game, it was announced that Doug Brumfield would be the starting quarterback for UNLV’s first game. To put it simply, Brumfield did not disappoint his coaching staff.

Brumfield posted 356 passing yards and four touchdowns. He completed 21 of 25 passes for the Rebels.

The Rebels went into halftime with a 45-7 lead. The Bengals never stood a chance after the first half. The game was essentially over before it even started.

Heading into the season for Idaho State, the program was expected to have multiple quarterbacks play throughout the season opener. UNLV’s defense was a problem for the three quarterbacks. Tyler Vander Waal passed for 130 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Hunter Hays threw for 61 yards and one touchdown. Each Idaho State quarterback attempted 13 passes.

For UNLV, all three quarterbacks saw playing time. Tennessee transfer Harrison Bailey had 26 passing yards on eight attempts. Cameron Friel came in and threw one touchdown and totaled 23 passing yards.

The running backs had a field day for UNLV. Transfer running back Aidan Robbins rushed for two touchdowns and 35 yards. Robbins had a receiving touchdown, as well. Courtney Reese led the team in rushing with 73 yards. Ricky White caught two touchdowns, while Kyle Williams, Zyell Griffin, and Robbins each had one receiving touchdown.

UNLV will be off next week and will return to action at California on Saturday, Sept. 10. This was UNLV’s first opening day win since 2019.

UNLV Football: Doug Brumfield To Start At Quarterback Vs. Idaho State, Per Reports

The Rebels’ dual-threat quarterback has reportedly won the starting assignment for UNLV’s season opener against the Idaho State Bengals.

Will Brumfield break out?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

A one-time transfer portal candidate, Doug Brumfield returns to UNLV ready for the 2022 season. But can he return to lead the Rebels to relevance?

Headed into a Saturday afternoon showdown with the Idaho State Bengals, Rebels head coach Marcus Arroyo has remained steadfast in not naming a starting quarterback ahead of kickoff. He has also spoken often of how this 2022 squad needs to learn from last year’s campaign, a 2-10 record that included six one-score losses, but also two wins in its last four games.

Now, however, with the news a starter has been named, first broken by Joe Arrigo of Franchise Sports Media, UNLV’s QB1 merits a closer look.

A 6’-5, 215 lb. quarterback, Doug Brumfield is a dual-threat quarterback that can offer options to the Rebels offense. With running back Aidan Collins – an incoming transfer from Louisville – in the backfield, expect Brumfield to be featured in a renewed rushing attack for UNLV, with the potential to mix in passing plays and keep defenses guessing. Wide receivers Kyle Williams and Ricky White are expected to be Brumfield’s main targets, and the offense as a whole will need to show improvement if the Rebels are to remain competitive throughout the season.

Idaho State vs. UNLV: Game Preview, How to Watch, Odds, Prediction

Brumfield has shown potential to lead the Rebels, including a comeback in a heart-breaking loss to Eastern Washington in last year’s season opener. He has the ability to move the offense as a passer or a rusher, but fans and critics alike will be looking for an evolution in the Rebels offense. If Brumfield can find success leading an offense featuring more run-pass options or big plays out of play action, there’s a chance this offense with a more pro-style approach can bring the kind of success that surprises a few teams this season.

But before fans can claim success, there are questions for Brumfield and the offense overall. A struggling offense at times will need Brumfield to buy time to allow receivers to get downfield. Trying to make too many big plays can also put Brumfield himself at risk, and after missing several games last season due to injury, there will inevitably be concerns with durability.

It can be said that Doug Brumfield embodies a lot of the character that defines this UNLV squad; after a tough season last year, and an offseason filled with questions, this 2022 is an opportunity for Brumfield and the Rebels to find a few more wins together. Easier said than done, but many of the pieces are in place and the season is upon us. Doug Brumfield now has an opportunity to lead the Rebels to greater success as a team to be reckoned with in the Mountain West Conference.

Nevada vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Nevada Will Win

There’s a whole lot of starting over going on at New Mexico State.

Jerry Kill is taking over as the head coach, and he’s going to want to run the ball, rely on the defense, and try to control the clock and be efficient – that’s going to take a little bit to get going with almost everyone who did anything big for the 2021 Aggie offense needing to be replaced.

Nevada is changing a slew of things up as well, but it has the running backs in place to pound away, and the passing attack should be just good enough to keep things moving.

The New Mexico State defense should be better, but it will still have a long way to go after giving up close to 500 yards and 40 points per game. However …

Why New Mexico State Will Win

There’s a whole lot of starting over going on at Nevada.

New head coach Ken Wilson has to fill in the parts after Jay Norvell left for Colorado State and took a slew of key guys with him. The Wolf Pack lost almost everyone who did anything important with their high-powered passing game last year.

There’s a ton of experience returning on the Aggie D. The O might have a few kinks to work out, but the other side gets back eight starters, the linebacking corps isn’t all that bad, and there are options to play around with in the secondary.

Yes, New Mexico State’s offense isn’t going to be steady, but the Nevada defense needs to hope and pray the transfers can help fill in the massive holes all over the place.

What’s Going To Happen

Kill is a terrific head coach who should be able to get his ground game going early on. The Aggies will play relatively well over the first half at home, but Nevada should get an instant payoff from the gajillion transfers coming in.

A few New Mexico State turnovers will help Nevada start to break away in the second half. The relative experience at quarterback – Nate Cox has been around the Wolf Pack long enough to know what he’s doing, and Oklahoma State transfer Shane Illingworth will play a role – will be the difference.
