Abilene Christian (5-6) vs. Mississippi State (4-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Abilene Christian Will Win

Here comes the pass rush.

The Wildcats are great against the run, they take the ball away, and they’re outstanding at getting into the backfield on a regular basis.

They might be struggling offensively, but the defensive front is among the best in the FCS with 35 sacks on the season with 17 forced fumbles – and it’s getting better.

The Mississippi State offensive line is good for the running game, and it’s not totally miserable in pass protection but if all-around playmaker Jeremiah Chambers and top pass rushers Kameron Hill and Temisan Kuyatsemi can get off early, they’ll halt what the Bulldogs can do down the field.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Abilene Christian isn’t able to throw the ball down the field, either.

There isn’t a ton of explosion among the receivers, and there are too many picks being given away. If the Bulldogs can swarm around RB Tracy James, the ACU offense stops.

Offensively, this is where the MSU running game gets moving again.

It averaged over five yards per carry against Alabama, but the game got out of hand in a hurry and the running game stalled after one good drive.

This week, the offense that rumbled for 460 yards on the ground against Arkansas, and tore off 239 yards against Texas A&M, will hammer away from the start.

ACU has a terrific run defense – at least statistically thanks to the pass rush – but it’s about to give up over 200 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

After losing five of its last six games, the 4-6 Bulldogs get the fifth win to set itself up for a shot at bowl eligibility when they face Ole Miss five days later.

Because of the short week, they’re going to want to get this done early and rest the main guys as soon as possible. That won’t be easy considering the ACU defense will keep this from getting out of hand, but the Bulldog defense will put this away by halftime.

Vanderbilt (2-8) vs. East Tennessee State (3-8) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why East Tennessee State Will Win

Vanderbilt is really, really bad at throwing the football.

It has a few decent receivers, it has options at quarterback – at least, it has players with experience – but it’s really, really not working.

The Commodores haven’t thrown for more than 90 yards in any of the last three games – averaging fewer than four yards per pass in them. This isn’t an offense that’s going to go off for 50 points – it doesn’t have the ability.

The Bucs have a decent enough offensive line to not get destroyed, and the defense has a few playmakers – S Artevius Smith is a problem – for a secondary that doesn’t get torched. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Bucs aren’t able to handle close games.

They can’t bust off big pass plays, they don’t move the offense in critical times, and they don’t move the chains well enough. They’re not struggling like the Vanderbilt offense is, but they’re not scoring in bunches and they don’t have anything they can consistently rely on in a game like this.

They can run the ball a bit – Quay Holmes has already hit the 1,100 yard mark – but the points are consistently coming.

They’ve been outscored 89-62 in the fourth quarter, and lost their two overtime battles. They’ve dropped seven games by seven points or fewer, and Vanderbilt needs to get out fast.

There’s not much of an ETSU passing game to worry about. Swarm around Holmes an the running game, and all should be fine.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t be fooled by the 3-8 record. ETSU is just dangerous enough to give a punchless Vanderbilt team problems.

The Commodore running game will work for close to 250 yards, the defense will keep the Bucs down on third downs, and it’ll be a third win on the season. It might not be beautiful, but it’s a win.

Kentucky (5-5) vs. UT Martin (7-4) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why UT Martin Will Win

The Skyhawks can play some run defense.

The offense is good at winging it around and it doesn’t turn the ball over, but it’s the defense that normally gets the job done.

It was run through by Florida, and it got hammered on by Austin Peay and Southern Illinois, but overall, the run defense is just active enough to get into the backfield on a regular basis. TJ Jefferson and Austin Pickett lead a terrific pass rush that should be an issue.

Kentucky doesn’t have a passing game. It was a big deal when Lynn Bowden threw for 127 yards against Vanderbilt – it was the first time in six games the Cats threw for over 100 yards.

UTM’s run D will load up. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Kentucky Will Win

This is the game for the Wildcats to get the pass rush going.

It’s been an inconsistent run for the excellent UK D when it comes to getting into the backfield, but UTM’s offensive line isn’t good enough to hold up.

The Skyhawks don’t have enough of a running game, and they’re not great at closing out drives with scores. Kentucky needs to get up early, and then it can sit on the ball for the rest of the game.

The UTM run defense is good overall, but Bowden and the ground game should be able to grind out drive after drive. The Cats should have the ball for at least 35 minutes, and closer to 40.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

UTM isn’t a speed bump.

It’s a paycheck game for UK, and it’ll be a sixth win to get bowl eligible, but it’ll provide enough of a push to make the Wildcats have to try. It’ll be a more interesting game than you might think, but UK will limit the possessions and won’t let the Skyhawks go on enough good drives to capture any momentum.

Jets should stick with committee approach at running back

Le’Veon Bell, Ty Montgomery and Bilal Powell combined for a season-high 115 yards on 33 carries in the Jets’ 34-17 win on Sunday.

[jwplayer oESJ6Y2t]

The Jets’ ground game soared on Sunday afternoon, thanks in large part to Le’Veon Bell spending more time on the sideline.

Adam Gase’s committee approach at running back took 11 weeks to get off the ground, but the strategy worked well at Washington. With injuries to the offensive line and the Redskins possessing a weak run defense, New York ran for over 100 yards for the first time all season in the 34-17 win.

Bell played 39 of 71 snaps, finishing with 20 touches for 92 total yards and a score. Bilal Powell and Ty Montgomery played 16 and 15 snaps, respectively. The two combined for nine carries for 53 yards. As a team, the Jets set season highs in rushing yards (115) and carries (33).

The Jets have been forced to overwork Bell because New York’s pass protection has been poor and he is the best pass-blocking back on the team. However, with Jonotthan Harrison and Tom Compton doing a good job of filling in on the offensive line Sunday, the Jets were able to deploy veterans Powell and Montgomery in the backfield.

This allowed Bell to get some rest in hopes of keeping him fresh. This is his first full season back after sitting out the entire 2018 season, and he is also dealing with some injuries to his knee and ribs.

“We’re trying to keep him as fresh as possible throughout the game but at the same time give him his touches,” Gase said. “I feel like he’s had a lot of touches this entire year. We’re trying to make sure we keep him rolling throughout the rest of the season. We still got a lot of football left.”

As for Bell and Montgomery, neither has seen much action this season. That changed on Sunday, though, and their involvement worked out well for Gang Green.

“I just think all those guys, they deserve to play,” Gase said. “They practice hard every day. We’re trying to mix in some of the runs that we’re doing. There’s certain things those guys do really well.”

Whether or not the Jets will stick to their committee approach remains to be seen — success against Washington’s run defense isn’t much of an accomplishment — but another try is certainly worth exploring. The Jets are more dynamic when they use multiple backs, and Bell being banged up only gives Gase more incentive to mix things up.

Watch again: Lamar Jackson shreds the Texans on a 39-yard run

Another game and another highlight-reel worthy run from Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. He showed power and speed on this run

Lamar Jackson is [insert uninvented adjective]. In what has become a weekly occurrence, the Baltimore Ravens’ second-year quarterback is destroying every defense in his path with remarkable, logic-defying runs. Against the Houston Texans in Week 11, Jackson yet again proved he’s the most electric quarterback in the league.

The Texans had the elusive quarterback nearly wrapped up when, in true Jackson fashion, he casually slipped through their fingers and moved upfield with a burst of speed and vision that can only be described as… “whaaaaa?”

Jackson then slipped past another defender and, with the aid of a Hayden Hurst block, set his sights on the end zone. With seemingly the entire Texans’ defense in tow, Jackson ran 39 yards ahead like a bullet. If not for Texans safety Justin Reid, this one may have gone the distance.

Ian Eagle’s “uh oh” to prelude the play might be my favorite thing ever. It was perfect, probably because we were all thinking it.

And that’s the magic of Jackson.

If he has the ball and the slimmest of chances, anything can happen. Even when the opposing defense has him covered and cornered, he can make you pay. And it’s become arguably the most exciting trend in the NFL… a trend Ravens fans can’t wait to see continue.
