NFL Draft 2020: SEC

It’s borderline obnoxious, but hardly unexpected.

As much as fans of other college football conferences might want to argue and complain, yeah, the SEC is usually just better.

And why? This isn’t hard. The league has better players than everyone else.

The SEC has owned the recruiting rankings by 85 miles ever since the beginning of the internet, and it comes across year after year in the NFL Draft.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

Last year, nine SEC players were selected in the first round. Granted it was still 28% of the first 32 picks, but it was still a tad light for the league that handed over ten of its finest players in the 2018 first round, and 12 in 2017.

But is it even possible to for a conference to own half of a first round by accounting for 16 picks?

11 SEC players were selected in 2014 first round, 12 got the call in 2013, and let’s just cheat a little bit and give a little boost to the league in 2011, considering Missouri and Texas A&M were making the move from the Big 12 to the SEC. With the newcomers added, the current SEC programs accounted for the first seven picks of the 2011 NFL Draft and 13 of the first 32.

It took a big bend of the criteria and the SEC still wasn’t even close to getting up to 16 first round picks.

By the way, the BetMGM line for total SEC players drafted in the first round is set at a ridiculous 15.5.

Is it even possible? Helped by Alabama and LSU, yeah.

LSU QB Joe Burrow, Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, Bama receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs, fellow Tide star OT Jedrick Wills, Auburn DT Derrick Brown, Florida CB CJ Henderson, Georgia OT Andrew Thomas, LSU edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson. That gets you to nine.

South Carolina DT Javon Kinlaw will go in the first round, as will LSU LB Patrick Queen. That’s 11, and a long, long, long way to go to get to 16 and the over.

There are others like LSU WR Justin Jefferson and Alabama S Xavier McKinney, who both have a shot of going in the top 32. There’s a chance RB D’Andre Swift and OT Isaiah Wilson from Georgia are both going early, and DE Terrell Lewis and CB Trevon Diggs from Alabama also could get the Day One call.

It’s not entirely insane to make a call that more than half of your 2020 NFL Draft first round will be made up of SEC players.

Let’s try this a different way.

[lawrence-related id=434326]

How Many SEC Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

How many players outside of the SEC are guaranteed to go in the first round?

Rapid-fire – Chase Young, Jeff Okudah, Isaiah Simmons, Justin Herbert, Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton, CeeDee Lamb, Kenneth Murray, Jordan Love, AJ Terrell. That’s ten, and then it’s all hit-or-miss from a pool of around 15 players who could slide into the top 32.

But SEC players are in that same bucket of first round tweeners.

How crazy do you want to get? Is this really going to be one of the most historic drafts ever in a chest-puffing moment for the It Just Means More league?

Yeah. There are more than enough SEC players to get to 16, and that’s where the value is – minimal as it is.

Prediction: Over
BetMGM line: 15.5, Over +115, Under -141

SEC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

[jwplayer eniJo7Qb]

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which SEC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is football, especially in the SEC. Football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best SEC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

SEC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

These schools suffered the indignity of failing to come up with a winning season in either of the two major sports. The fans didn’t get to have any fun.

14. Vanderbilt

Football: 3-9 overall, 1-7 in conference, 7th in SEC East

Basketball: 11-21 overall, 3-15 in conference, 14th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The football team never got anything going. There was a close win over a sleepy Missouri team, and that was about it with no offense and blowout loss after blowout loss.

Football was bad, but basketball was worse. At least the Commodores didn’t finish dead last in the conference in football. The hoops side finally won two SEC game in the final three, but overall it lost 17 of its last 20 games.

13. Ole Miss

Football: 4-8 overall, 2-6 in conference, 6th in SEC West

Basketball: 15-17 overall, 6-12 in conference, 12th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The basketball team started out well and crashed badly. Just when there was a chance to pivot – at 13-11 on a three-game winning streak – it all went wrong with six losses in the final eight games.

While the bad football season led to landing Lane Kiffin, getting there was rough. Losing five games in the last six was rough enough, but the way it dropped the Egg Bowl at Mississippi State – the peeing dog antics and missed extra point – made it uglier.

Kentucky (18-5) vs. Vanderbilt (9-14) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kentucky Will Win

We did this a few weeks ago, and UK didn’t have much of a problem after getting beaten up in the first half.

Down early, the Wildcats roared back in the second half to win 71-62 as part of a run of ten Vandy losses in the last 11 games.

The Commodores don’t play any defense, they can’t stop anyone on the perimeter – they’re getting roasted from three – and worst of all for this game, they can’t rebound. They were a -8 on the boards the first time around, and it’s not going to be a whole lot better.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores might not be great from three, but they’ll keep on bombing away.

Part of the reason is because they have to do something to get back into games – going 0-for-25 against Tennessee wasn’t pretty – but they’ll get hot once in a while. They hit from the outside against LSU, and they won. They have to hope for a slightly disinterested effort from UK’s D for a full 40 minutes.

Kentucky doesn’t do much to take the ball away, and it doesn’t take a whole lot of threes. Vandy has to hold its own on the defensive boards, and it has to get hot early and hope the energy of the crowd helps. But …

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is great at defending the three.

Vandy actually hit from the outside in the first meeting, but it wasn’t consistent enough and the defense couldn’t handle the second half run.

Expect more of the same as the Wildcats get up fast and doesn’t allow many – if any – second chance points.

Tennessee (6-5) vs. Vanderbilt (3-8) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Can the Commodores get the running game going?

The offense might not be consistent, and it might have had major problems scoring or long, long stretches, but when the ground attack works, the team can usually maintain control.

Vanderbilt is 3-1 when it runs for 150 yards or more – the one loss coming to UNLV – and 0-7 when it doesn’t.

The offensive line has had issues all season long generating any sort of a consistent push, but when it’s able to do the bare minimum, everything else seems to kick in.

In its final game of the year, this is where Vandy has to bust out the O that pounded away on East Tennessee State last week. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Tennessee Will Win

Beyond Tennessee not being East Tennessee State, the Vol run defense has managed to be terrific against all but the very, very good ground attacks.

Kentucky is doing nothing but running so far, Georgia is Georgia, and Georgia State came up with something out of the blue in the opening game of the year. Those are the only three FBS teams to run for 150 yards or more.

Vanderbilt doesn’t have an efficient enough passing game to make up for the ground attack when it’s not rocking, but the secondary might end up being the bigger problem if the Volunteer passing game stays hot.

Jarrett Guarantano has had his ups and downs this season, but he’s been brilliant over the last few games. He only threw eight passes against Kentucky, but he connected on seven of them with two scores and a few big plays.

Against Missouri last week he threw for 415 yards and two touchdowns. When he’s on, the Vols can rock the deep plays.

Vanderbilt isn’t rocking anything with its passing game.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a wee bit lost in the fog of the season, but Tennessee is just a few plays away from having a relatively special campaign. Had it been able to pull of those early games against Georgia State and BYU, it would be 8-3 right now and everyone would be gushing.

As it is, it’ll have to settle for being 7-5 and on its way to a bowl game before going into the offseason as a program on the rise. First, it’ll roll past a Vanderbilt team that won’t have enough offense to keep up after the Vols get up early with two quick scoring drives.

Vanderbilt (2-8) vs. East Tennessee State (3-8) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why East Tennessee State Will Win

Vanderbilt is really, really bad at throwing the football.

It has a few decent receivers, it has options at quarterback – at least, it has players with experience – but it’s really, really not working.

The Commodores haven’t thrown for more than 90 yards in any of the last three games – averaging fewer than four yards per pass in them. This isn’t an offense that’s going to go off for 50 points – it doesn’t have the ability.

The Bucs have a decent enough offensive line to not get destroyed, and the defense has a few playmakers – S Artevius Smith is a problem – for a secondary that doesn’t get torched. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Bucs aren’t able to handle close games.

They can’t bust off big pass plays, they don’t move the offense in critical times, and they don’t move the chains well enough. They’re not struggling like the Vanderbilt offense is, but they’re not scoring in bunches and they don’t have anything they can consistently rely on in a game like this.

They can run the ball a bit – Quay Holmes has already hit the 1,100 yard mark – but the points are consistently coming.

They’ve been outscored 89-62 in the fourth quarter, and lost their two overtime battles. They’ve dropped seven games by seven points or fewer, and Vanderbilt needs to get out fast.

There’s not much of an ETSU passing game to worry about. Swarm around Holmes an the running game, and all should be fine.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t be fooled by the 3-8 record. ETSU is just dangerous enough to give a punchless Vanderbilt team problems.

The Commodore running game will work for close to 250 yards, the defense will keep the Bucs down on third downs, and it’ll be a third win on the season. It might not be beautiful, but it’s a win.

SEC Quick Thoughts, Takes On Every Game: Week 12

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 SEC game.

Quick thoughts and takes on every Week 12 SEC game.

Florida 23, Missouri 6

It wasn’t anything pretty, and the Gators didn’t get the Georgia loss they needed to take the SEC East, but it was still a strong road win by double-digits. Kyle Trask threw for 282 yards and two scores, the offense was able to open it up a bit in the third quarter, and it was the win needed to keep hope alive for a New Year’s Six bowl game.

Missouri can’t score touchdowns. It managed two field goals, making it the second straight game without a touchdown and with just 27 points over the last four games. The passing game didn’t go anywhere, the running game finished with 52 yards, and the O wasted a strong effort from the D.

The Tigers aren’t going bowling no matter what – thanks to NCAA violations – but it would nice to come up with a winning season. They get Tennessee up next before closing out at Arkansas.

Florida gets a week off before facing Florida State. The Sugar Bowl might be out with LSU, Alabama and Georgia all in the mix for the CFP and the top SEC bowl spots, but Orange is a possibility with a convincing win against the Noles and a 10-2 record.

Alabama 38, Mississippi State 7

Of course the season-ending injury to Tua Tagovailoa overshadowed everything else – a whole lot more on that coming over the next few days – but Mac Jones stepped in and was fine. The Tide only scored three points in the second half, but Jones hit 7-of-11 passes for 94 yards, the defense was great, and the shell-shocked team got through the rest of the game and got out. It was still a 31-point win on the road, even after all of that.

Najee Harris has picked a fantastic time to become amazing. He ran for 88 yards and three scores – and caught 51 yards worth of passes with a. score –  the offensive line blasted away, and the receiving corps was its typical fantastic self. Everything was great except for that, and …

Tagovailoa’s injury also pushed out of the spotlight a leg injury to DT Raekwon Davis. The D was just fine against the Bulldogs, but Davis the guy the line couldn’t afford to lose.

Mississippi State was able to run for just enough big dashes to average over five yards per carry. After a good early scoring drive, though, that was it. Tommy Stevens threw for 82 yards and a score, and he tore off a 46-yard run, but the O didn’t do much of anything with its 270 yards.

Alabama got a week against Arkansas to get Mac Jones up to speed in case he was needed against LSU. Now he gets a practice week against Western Carolina to get ready for the trip to Auburn. All is hardly lost in the CFP race – blow out the Tigers, and everything will be still on the table.

At 4-6, Mississippi State has to beat Abilene Christian and Ole Miss to get to six wins and bowl eligibility.
