UNLV goes cold, UCLA stays hot

Well, this one was never in danger of going to overtime.

It was another rough night for the Runnin’ Rebels on Friday, as the team fell to UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, 71-54. The Bruins jumped out to an early lead and never truly looked back as they moved to 6-0 in the all-time series between the two schools.

The Bruins (3-0, 0-0 Pac-12) were paced by junior Chris Smith, who scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half and helped UCLA put their opponents at arm’s reach. Smith also finished with eight rebounds, which tied for the team lead with Jalen Hill. Touted Bruins freshmen Tyger Campbell and Jaime Jaquez combined to score 23 points. Prince Ali had ten points in the second half and finished with 14.

For the second consecutive game, Donnie Tillman, Amauri Hardy, and Elijah Mitrou-Long all scored in double figures. Tillman led the charge with a season-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Hardy and Mitrou-Long each added 13, with Bryce Hamilton scoring ten.

And that’s it for UNLV. Only four players scored for the Rebels.

Chiekh Mbacke Diong found other ways to contribute, pulling down seven rebounds and recording UNLV’s only two blocked shots. But Jonah Antonio was ineffective in the first half and didn’t play during the second. Nick Blair and Cheickna Dembele combined for 25 minutes off the bench but registered a grand total of zero points (on zero shots), one rebound, two turnovers, and three fouls.

Suffice it to say that TJ Otzelberger still hasn’t found the recipe for top-tier success—though the Rebels (1-3, 0-0 MWC) have shown some signs of promise even in their losses. Hardy is a volume shooter and will be among the top scorers in the Mountain West, but he hasn’t been very efficient. Tillman has shown flashes of brilliance, but he’s also had some frustrating turnovers and foul problems.

This game brought two of the Rebels’ biggest issues to light: a lack of depth and poor execution. Having four players score in double figures is nice, but having zero points from the rest of the team is less than ideal. And the Rebels again shot under 40% from the field for the second time this season.

Both are problems that they need to fix quickly.

UCLA, on the other hand, looked like a team starting to gel under first-year head coach Mick Cronin. The Bruins remain undefeated and have improved in each game of the early season. If Tyger Campbell continues his star rise while the team’s veterans pour in solid performances night in and night out, they could easily hear their name called on Selection Sunday.

UP NEXT FOR UNLV: The Rebels will host the Wildcats of Abilene Christian (1-1, 0-0 Southland) at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The game is part of the Southwestern Showdown presented by Engage Telehealth. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 P.M. Mountain Time.

What’s Going To Happen

Can the UNLV defense slow down the Hawaii passing attack?

The Rebels only have two wins on the year, and one was a strange victory over Vanderbilt on the road. They’ve been rocked by just about everyone else, but it comes down to whether or not the porous secondary can slow down the Rainbow Warrior air show that’s trying to lead the way to the team’s seventh win.

UNLV shut down the Vandy passing game cold, but it’s easy to put up at least 200 yards if anyone commits to it.
Hawaii commit to it.

The Rainbow Warrior defense will do its part, too, against a UNLV offense that can’t move the chains, isn’t consistent, and doesn’t have the ground game to slow things down when the defense is getting hit.

It doesn’t matter that it’s Chevan Cordeiro or Cole McDonald under center – Cordeiro threw for 309 yards and three scores against San Jose State, and he ran for 55 yards. The O will work without a problem as Hawaii rolls.

Final Score: Air Force 38, Colorado State 21

Recap:

The Rams let Air Force hang around for too long. While an Air Force fumble on their opening drive led to a 63 yard scoop and score for linebacker Mohamed Kamara, the Rams were unable to capitalize on solid defensive performance early.

The insult to injury was the 99 yard pick six by Air Force defensive back Zane Lewis as O’Brien was trying to pull Colorado State within a score late in the fourth quarter.

After going up 14-0, the Rams were then outscored 38-7 and likely saw their slim bowl game chances disappear into the cold Fort Collins night.

New Mexico at Boise State

10:15 p.m. ET, TV: ESPN2 | Get Tickets
Line: Boise State -28 | Staff Picks

Final Score: Boise State 42, New Mexico 9

Recap:

On the Boise State front, this was a good game to try to get everything going right before playing traveling to take on Utah State and a rising Colorado State team. For New Mexico, this was a chance to just get back to some normalcy after tragedy struck the team a week ago.  The Broncos got off to a fast start with Chase Hatada striping the ball from New Mexico quarterback Tevaka Salanoa-Tuioti that was ran back by Sonatane Lui for a touchdown. Boise State followed that with three more in the first quarter to break out to a 28-0 lead. Issues with consistency arose in the second quarter when Jaylon Henderson, Boise State’s third starter at quarterback this season, struggled and threw an interception and fumbled on back to back drives. Once the Broncos scored two more times in the second half, preservation was the goal and most of the starters started to get phased out of the game.

Realizing it’s New Mexico’s defense, the Broncos moved the ball well with Henderson at quarterback, but there were some spots in the game where execution was lacking.  Henderson did well throwing for almost 300 yards and 3 touchdowns while having the 1 interception. Defensive lineman Sonatane Lui put on another great game recovering 2 fumbles, one of which he returned for a touchdown, while on offense Khalil Shakir caught and threw for a touchdown and tallied 100 total yards.

It wasn’t all good though as STUD Curtis Weaver left the field late in the second half and was later seen in a boot.  Also, Hank Bachmeier and Chase Cord didn’t see any action and George Holani and Robert Mahone saw limited action. Mahone had a knee brace on and didn’t look to be healthy on the few carries he had and Holani didn’t appear to have an issue so it was likely due to the game getting out of reach of New Mexico quickly.

While it could have been cleaner, this was the kind of performance that the Broncos were looking for from the game.  This should help the offense build its confidence going into a tough final two games of the season.

SERIES RECORD: UCLA leads, 5-0

ODDS: UCLA -7, per KenPom

PREVIEW: TJ Otzelberger’s first three games have been a pretty mixed bag, as UNLV sits at 1-2 after Tuesday night’s overtime loss to California. It was the second time in as many games that the Rebels fell in extra time.

But though the results are the same, there were far more positives for UNLV in the Cal game than there were against Kansas State.

For starters, Amauri Hardy didn’t have to do all the scoring. He still ended up with 15 points, but Donnie Tillman and Eli Mitrou-Long both topped him, scoring 17 and 16, respectively.

Tillman’s big game was exactly what UNLV needed. The transfer had a nice debut, but his 16 points against Purdue-Fort Wayne were propped up by a lot of trips to the line. Against the Golden Bears, Tillman was able to score from the field, hitting 5-of-10 from inside the arc and burying his first three-pointer in a Rebels uniform.

Also encouraging is that Tillman played 41 minutes against Cal, compared to a combined 42 minutes against Purdue-Fort Wayne and Kansas State. If UNLV is going to rise above their station, Tillman needs to build off of Tuesday’s performance.

But the Rebels face a difficult task in heading to one of college basketball’s most hallowed halls, Pauley Pavilion.

In their third consecutive game against a Power 5 opponent, UNLV heads to Westwood to take on UCLA and their new head coach, Mick Cronin. The Rebels have never beaten the Bruins in five tries. Their last meeting, a 77-75 thriller, took place in 2015.

This year’s UCLA team comes in with a 2-0 record, but they aren’t without their question marks, either. Their opener was a struggle against Long Beach State. The Bruins eked out a four-point victory over the Beach, but didn’t shoot particularly well.

Sunday’s tilt with UCSB started out looking like it would be another long game for the Bruins, but UCLA took over in the second half. Sophomores Jalen Hill and Jules Bernard both hit the 20-point mark. Hill was dominant inside, finishing with 22 points, ten rebounds, and three blocks.

Prince Ali and Chris Smith both scored in double figures, but shot a combined 4-for-18 from the floor. Freshman Tyger Campbell was held to just two points after scoring 15 against Long Beach State. Campbell did add six assists, proving his worth as a distributor in Mick Cronin’s offense.

UCLA could find themselves in the hunt for a top-half finish and a potential trip to the NCAA Tournament this March, but they will need to start playing the full 40 minutes if they are going to reach their potential.

UNLV needs to contain Hill inside and make the Bruins prove that they can hit the long ball effectively. But if UCLA is making their shots, it’s going to be difficult for the Rebels to hang.

They would also probably prefer to avoid another overtime.

GAME NOTES (PDF): Hawaii | UNLV

ODDS (via OddsShark): Hawaii -7

SP+ PROJECTION: Hawaii by 11.5 (75% win probability)

FEI PROJECTION: Hawaii by 10.1

In their quest to break a three-game losing streak, the UNLV Rebels will have their hands full on Saturday afternoon against the Hawaii Warriors, in the latest iteration of the Ninth Island Showdown.

Nick Rolovich’s run-and-shoot didn’t seem to miss a beat even with a change at quarterback last week, but the Rebels should have plenty of opportunities themselves to light up the scoreboard against a suspect Warriors defense. Here’s how UNLV can score an upset over Hawaii.

Three Keys to a UNLV Victory

1. Use the ground game to play “keep away”.

Neither team has been especially good at defending the run of late, evidenced by the fact that Hawaii and UNLV have given up 5.71 and 6.16 yards per carry, respectively, in Mountain West play. Hawaii, however, has averaged 6.01 YPC on offense in conference action while UNLV has sputtered with just 3.16 YPC, so turning that around will be paramount.

Charles Williams will get his touches one way or another, but Chad Magyar’s reemergence could be huge. Since breaking out against Vanderbilt a month ago, the sophomore running back has seen just ten, three, and five carries in the Rebels’ last three games, but finding a way to make him successful, keeping the Hawaii offense off the field, could be the path to an upset.

2. If necessary, gamble to stay on the field.

One thing that both UNLV and Hawaii have in common is that neither team is shy about setting their punt unit aside to keep the offense on the field. The Warriors and Rebels are the Mountain West’s two most aggressive teams on fourth down and while it’s worked out more often than not for UNLV, converting 15-of-29 such tries, it’s been a definitive strength for Hawaii since they are 15-of-24.

When it comes to sidelining the Hawaii offense, Tony Sanchez shouldn’t get gun shy if the right opportunity presents itself. If you see a punt on something like 4th-and-2 anywhere on Hawaii’s side of the field, something is going wrong for UNLV. Better to go out on your shield in a high-scoring affair.

3. Eliminate the drops.

At the end of October, Pro Football Focus put together a list of rankings of each FBS team’s wide receivers and the note for UNLV was particularly galling: The Rebels had dropped 22.8% of their catchable throws to that point, the fifth-worst figure in the country, and it’s hard to imagine the situation has since improved much.

Considering that Hawaii doesn’t have the same level of pass defense as prior foes like Wyoming, Boise State or San Diego State, it looks like an opportunity for Kenyon Oblad to match Chevan Cordeiro on the stat sheet but he’ll need more help from his receivers to do so.

Prediction

One thing seems certain: If you get a chance, take the over. Neither defense seems likely to offer much resistance, but it’s difficult to imagine that UNLV could match the Warriors touchdown for touchdown over a full sixty minutes. It might largely be a shootout between two rising quarterbacks, but I imagine Hawaii’s newfound prowess with running the football will make a difference late.

Hawaii 45, UNLV 35

Boise State and Air Force are at the top

The top two spots are non-negotiable this week and they both come from the same division. Boise State sits at the top with all of the first-place votes and then Air Force comes in next with all voters choosing those two teams as their first and second choice.

The Falcons moved up from three to two and the Broncos took the top spot all to themselves after defeating Wyoming and also San Diego State dropping a game to Nevada.

The Aztecs drop from two to the fourth spot with Wyoming moving up one spot to No. 3 despite losing in overtime to Boise State. The rest of the rankings see a mishmash of teams jumping up or down one spot.

Teams are fighting for bowl eligibility

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 12th week of Mountain West football in what we are dubbing “trophy week” as so many games have a trophy on the line this weekend. Things get started with the Old Oil Can as Fresno State takes on San Diego State on a Friday night game. The Bulldogs need two wins to become bowl eligible and this a game that might be close than some think.
On Saturday the UNLV Rebels host the Hawaii Warriors for what we call the “Golden Pineapple” which is far superior compared to the “Ninth Island Showdown.” Wyoming and Utah State battle for Bridger’s rifle in what could be a defensive showdown, Colorado State is fighting for bowl eligibility vs. Air Force for the Ram-Falcon trophy. The final game of the day does not have a trophy on the line as Boise State takes on New Mexico.
