Here’s why Cowboys had such a lackluster UDFA haul in 2024

A look into why Dallas’ UDFA haul was a lot less heralded than many are used to. | From @KDDrummondNFL

Now that the dust has settled on the 2024 draft, there’s plenty of fodder for each NFL team and who they brought into the fold. Recently, Thor Nystrom of Fantasy Pros went through the exercise of evaluating every team’s UDFA haul.

Normally, Dallas ranks among the best UDFA hauls around the league. They annually win the affection of some of the best remaining prospects who didn’t hear their names called, but probably should have, and that’s evidenced by the success they have in making Dallas’ 53-man roster and practice squad, then eventually working their way into playing time. That may not be the case for too many in 2024 and there may be a clear reason.

Nystrom ranks Dallas as just the 17th-best haul in undrafted free agency, a far cry from where they have been revered recently. The most prominent signing seems to be a blocking TE from Minnesota, Brevyn Spann-Ford.

The question is, what is the reason for the overall lackluster haul?

Perhaps it’s an issue with the coaching staff.

Agents play a very pivotal role in deciding which offer a prospect takes, as they are likely to steer a player towards the best place to latch on to try and forge a career.

And for UDFAs who have options, why would they sign with the Cowboys? Everything that’s been done this offseason has made Dallas an unattractive destination for 2024.

The biggest reason is the coaching staff are all on one-year contracts. When new coaching staffs are brought in, they look to bring in guys that fit their system. So Mike McCarthy, Brian Schottenheimer and Mike Zimmer not having a known shelf-life means that even if a prospect is able to get on the 53-man roster or practice squad, there’s a new regime loading the following year so they would lose all the capital built in practice.

The new staff wouldn’t have seen the growth or potential.

And while Quinn was known as a player’s coach, Zimmer is known as the exact opposite. That might be just what the veterans on the defense need, but that doesn’t bode well for prospects who need seasoning to have an uber-demanding coach with a complicated system to learn.

Meanwhile, owner Jerry Jones waxed poetic about the pending signing of Ezekiel Elliott, so while the lack of a star on the depth chart would’ve normally have been attractive to the top remaining running backs, Jones’ unnecessarily tipping the club’s hand likely hurt them in that regard.

Browns have the toughest strength of schedule in 2024

The Browns will have to earn a playoff spot in 2024

The NFL schedule announcement will be coming soon, but the strength of the schedule has already been figured out based on last season. Sitting here before the preseason, the Cleveland Browns have the hardest schedule in the league, as their opponents were a combined 158-131 in 2023.

Of course, that is going off of last year’s records, and the rosters of those teams look different heading into 2024. The Browns will face a total of 12 games against teams that had winning records last season. One nice aspect is several of their toughest opponents, the Steelers, Ravens, Chiefs, Dolphins, Cowboys, and Bengals, will be played at home.

Granted, they will also have to play their division rivals on the road as well. The Browns have a second-place schedule after last year, and that’ll make getting back to the playoffs harder in 2024, but if this roster plays up to its potential, they will be ready for the challenge.

Where the Browns rank in cap space among all 32 teams after the 2024 NFL draft

Where do the Browns rank in cap space after the 2024 NFL draft?

The Cleveland Browns, for all of the talk that surrounds their salary cap and the contract of quarterback Deshaun Watson, have not found themselves in money trouble since making the trade. And that has not changed after the 2024 NFL draft either.

That is a testament to general manager Andrew Berry and his team as they have found ways to keep the books balanced while continuously adding talent to the roster as well. It also helps they have an owner in Jimmy Haslam who has been willing to front money to convert salary to bonuses in contract restructures as well.

With a playoff roster, and with the young players to look to keep their roster competitive for years to come, where do the Browns sit in terms of cap space entering the 2024 season? Here’s a look at where the Browns stand among the rest of their AFC North rivals and the rest of the NFL in cap space after the 2024 NFL draft, per the numbers at Over the Cap.

Browns host girls high school flag football championship in Cleveland

The event took place in Cleveland Browns Stadium

The high school girls’ flag football championships took place in Cleveland Browns Stadium this year, with 28 teams participating in the competition. Greg Newsome II was among the group from the Browns that helped run the event, and he spoke about it afterward.

Newsome talked about how the event has grown this year, with more teams than last year with multiple teams returning to play again. He talked about how great it is to be a part of something like this and how much fun the participants had with Mayfield taking home the championship.

Also in attendance for the Browns were head coach Kevin Stefanski, special teamer Justin Hardee Sr., and assistant coaches Duce Staley, Callie Brownson, and Ashton Grant.

It’s great to see the Browns put on events like this to encourage kids to get active and enjoy the sport at a young age. The Browns are back in action this weekend with rookie minicamp in Berea.

8 potential Prescott replacements and the Penix perpendicularity

While it comes across to some that the Dallas Cowboys front office no longer has a plan, rest assured they do. Whether it’s a good plan or not is definitely up for debate. The Cowboys have chosen to not yet open up their wallets for franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, and as such he appears ready to enter his ninth year in the league on the final year of his contract.

There’s still time to make a deal, but it would be foolish to think the front office is not building contingency plans if he should walk in free agency following the season. Part of those plans involve potentially drafting a QB next year, but it also must include considering veteran QBs who could be available next offseason. Much of the focus of Cowboys Nation has been on where Prescott could land next year, but Dallas will have various levels of replacement options to pursue.

And in that vein, the biggest surprise of Round 1 on the 2024 NFL draft may have contributed another candidate. There’s a world where the Falcons’ draft move intersects with the Cowboys QB situation.

Atlanta spent the No. 8 pick on Washington QB Michael Penix, Jr., despite guaranteeing Kirk Cousins $100 million as the biggest free-agency splash in the league. While they’ll co-exist in 2024, Cousins all of a sudden is a trade candidate next year, before he’s even taken a snap in the Peach State. That adds the veteran to a lengthening list of quarterbacks who could end up wearing the star next season.

Here we’ll look at each, and whether or not they would be considered a bridge to someone else as the team rebuilds, or a franchise quarterback candidate. None of these players are as good as Prescott, but that’s why they’d be cheaper alternatives for the club.

It’s assumed Lance will move up to QB2 for the Cowboys this year, getting the majority of the reps not given to Prescott, instead of Cooper Rush. The third-overall pick from the 2021 draft was acquired last offseason for a fourth-round pick, and the team bragged about how he’s the QB they drafted. The problem is he had little collegiate experience, little pro experience and is now on the final year of his contract.

Even if he balls out in the three preseason games that Prescott likely won’t play in, his worth will likely be evaluated by the Cowboys removing Prescott from any blowout victories early enough to give Lance a couple series throughout the season.

Ceiling: Franchise, but most likely bridge

Many expected Lawrence to take the leap into the elite club in 2023 but that never materialized. The third-year starter couldn’t lead Jacksonville to double-digit wins and regressed from his top-10 MVP campaign of 2022. The Jaguars placed the fifth-year option on him, so he’d have to be put ont the trade market in order for the Cowboys to acquire his services, but if the former No. 1 selection doesn’t turn the corner, he could be available for trade if Jacksonville goes another direction in the draft next year, or he could come free in 2026 if Dallas lands a bridge QB if Prescott leaves town.

Ceiling: Franchise

The Saints weren’t in on the top QBs of the 2024 draft, but they did select one of the biggest wild-cards in Spencer Rattler. The former Oklahoma quarterback transferred to South Carolina and didn’t excel, but there weren’t many options at his disposal. Once the top-rated prospect, if he balls out in his opportunities in New Orleans, Derek Carr will immediately become available in 2025.

Carr is owed $40 million in cash, $10 million guaranteed, and the Saints could make him a June 1 release to save $30 million in cap space.

Ceiling: Bridge

Russell Wilson’s time in Denver mercifully came to an end. He improved over his first season, getting his TD:INT ratio back into the quality category (5.8 : 1.8), but the Denver team was abysmal and he certainly didn’t elevate those around him. He’s on a one-year deal in Pittsburgh while collecting checks with the Broncos logo, so he’ll have to prove he’s still capable in this league. But if he does, he’d make the perfect off-season signing if Dallas loses Prescott.

Ceiling: Bridge

Cousins’ contract is huge, they guaranteed $100 million, but that doesn’t make him untradable. In fact, the team could carve out around $2.5 million in space in 2025 were they to deal him next offseason, and then be free of all future obligations.

He’d probably be relatively cheap, compensation wise, and the Cowboys wouldn’t be committing to anything beyond the 2025 season, as that’s the only remaining guaranteed base salary, and it’s a pretty affordable $27.5 million with no roster bonus.

Ceiling: Franchise

Another former No. 1 pick, though Fields has already found himself on the move, landing in Pittsburgh as Russell Wilson’s backup and also on a one-year rental. That situation is intriguing as the Steelers hope both play well enough to earn either a new deal in Pennsylvania, or a future compensatory pick consideration.

Fields is the younger of the two, by far, so the hope in Steel City would be for Fields to outplay Wilson and fall in love with the environment. But there’s a clear window where Fields can prove himself to be starter worthy and also not end up back in Pittsburgh. If that’s the case, then Dallas may have interest if Prescott is no longer around.

Ceiling: Franchise, but most likely bridge

A really interesting name in all of this is Tagovailoa, who led the NFL in passing yards in 2023 after leading the league in passer rating (and TD percentage, and yards per attempt, and several other passing categories) in 2022.

Tagovailoa is set to play 2024 under the fifth-year option and he has an absolutely loaded supporting cast as the Dolphins added Odell Beckham to Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and the Raheem Mostert-Devon Achane RB combo.

So why would Miami let him go? The Dolphins seem like the perfect fit if Prescott is looking for a landing spot in 2025 free agency, so maybe there’s a QB shuffle between the two teams in free agency.

Ceiling: Franchise

Saving the worst nightmare for Cowboys fans until last is nasty work, but the possibility does have to be mentioned. The Giants are clearly looking to escape from their horrible contract they gave Daniel Jones. They flirted with selecting a QB at the top of the 2024 draft, but New England nixed their best trade-up offer and selected Drake Maye at No. 3. The Giants may have considered any of the other three first-round QBs if they had lasted until the back end of the round or the beginning of the second.

Nevertheless, they’ll likely be in the market again next offseason, and that could range from signing Prescott as a FA or going back into the draft. Either way, Jones will hit the FA market as someone who was clearly overdrafted and unable to do anything but be a bus driver (in the negative connotation).

But as a bridge guy to transition to a draft pick QB? He’s in the realm of possibilities.

Ceiling: Bridge

OKLAHOMA CITY — As Cason Wallace caught a pass from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the 20-year-old stayed composed and swished in the corner 3-point attempt. The usually stoic MVP candidate showed a rare glimpse of pure emotion as he was the first to celebrate the rookie’s dagger.

Dallas cleared its bench after a timeout as OKC led 22 points with a little over five minutes left.

The Oklahoma City Thunder collected a 117-95 Game 1 win over the Dallas Mavericks. OKC opens the series with a 1-0 lead and is now 5-0 in the playoffs. It’s yet to allow 100 points in a postseason contest.

“I thought we got a good groove going after kinda a choppy start,” Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault said on the playoff win. “Really intelligent attacks. We had a good blend of aggression and also taking what the defense gave us, keeping them on their heels, keeping the ball ahead of them.”

It was a close contest in the opening moments as both teams struggled to generate points. After the first quarter, both teams were tied at 23 apiece. The second frame produced a much faster pace of points for both squads.

A 21-9 run by the Thunder created a nine-point lead with three minutes left in the first half. The Thunder totaled 39 points in the second quarter and entered halftime with a 62-53 lead over the Mavericks.

An 11-3 run by Dallas in the opening stages of the second half saw it cut OKC’s lead to two points with over six minutes left in the third frame. It suddenly looked like the Mavericks had all the momentum and were on the verge of usurping the Thunder’s advantage.

Instead, OKC responded with a decisive 20-7 run to balloon its lead back to 15 points in the final seconds of the third frame. The Thunder had 27 points in the quarter and entered the fourth frame with an 89-79 advantage.

Chet Holmgren had a 3-pointer and dunk to push OKC’s lead to 94-80 with under 10 minutes left. The Thunder had another monster run of 19-5 to put this game to bed. The Mavericks waved the white flag as Wallace’s catch-and-shoot 3-pointer pushed the Thunder’s lead past 20 points.

After a thrilling first half, the Thunder had a dominating second half and outscored the Mavericks, 55-42, en route to a blowout win to build the 1-0 advantage of their second-round series against Dallas.

The Thunder shot 45% from the field and went 16-of-35 (45.7%) from 3. They shot 21-of-28 from the free-throw line. They had a playoff-record-high 29 assists on 40 baskets. Five Thunder players scored double-digit points.

Gilgeous-Alexander had an impressive Game 1 with a near 29-point triple-double. He shot 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. Holmgren had 19 points and seven rebounds. Jalen Williams totaled 18 points, five rebounds and five assists. Aaron Wiggins contributed with 16 points off the bench.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks struggled to score as they failed to crack triple-digit points. They shot 39% from the field and went 12-of-35 (34.3%) from 3. They went 17-of-25 from the free-throw line. They were held to 19 assists on 33 baskets. Five Mavericks players scored double-digit points.

Luka Doncic has his worst game of the playoffs yet. He was limited to 19 points on 6-of-19 shooting, nine assists and six rebounds. He shot 1-of-9 from 3 as the 25-year-old struggled with his outside shot. Kyrie Irving only had 20 points. Daniel Gafford had 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

The Thunder had about as impressive of a showing against the Mavericks as one could’ve hoped. After a week off, they had zero rust and were ready to start Round 2 against one of the hottest squads in the league since the All-Star break.

Despite the lopsided win, the Thunder won’t let this result affect how they perform the rest of the series. OKC realizes how dangerous the Mavericks are as one of the last eight teams still left competing.

“We know this is a heavyweight matchup and this is a really good team,” Daigneault said. “To think you’re going to go through a game or a series where they don’t land their punches is unrealistic. They landed a couple of punches there and it’s a long series.

“We have to be ready for a better version of them coming out in Game 2. We expect that.”

Let’s look at Thunder player grades.

In a battle of MVP finalists, Gilgeous-Alexander one-upped Doncic in Game 1. The 25-year-old had arguably his best outing of the playoffs yet.

In 37 minutes, Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 29 points on 8-of-19 shooting, nine assists and nine rebounds. He shot 2-of-4 from 3 and went 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. He was a plus-21.

The jumper didn’t fall at the rate it usually does, but Gilgeous-Alexander made up for that with attacks to the basket and initiating contact. The whistles looked similar to the regular season and he got to the free-throw line at will.

Gilgeous-Alexander had a hot start with eight points in the first quarter. He totaled 19 points in the first half to enter halftime with a double-digit lead over Dallas. A strong 10-point third quarter kept a healthy distance on the scoreboard against the Mavericks.

After a week off, Gilgeous-Alexander utilized the rest to enter this contest with fresh legs. He was easily the best player on the court as he faced one of the best duos in the league. The Thunder will need him to continue to put up similar numbers the rest of the way in hopes of advancing past Round 2.

Waiting for Hardaway Jr. to fly past him on a contest, Williams shuffled to the left and splashed in the sidestep 3-pointer to push OKC’s lead to 15 points with eight minutes left. He celebrated with the crowd as they cheered in barks.

It was another monster fourth quarter by Williams, who’s turned into OKC’s designated closer. In 36 minutes, he finished with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting, five assists and five rebounds. He shot 2-of-5 from 3 and went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. He was a plus-15.

The second-year wing tallied 10 points in the fourth quarter. Every basket happened in less than two minutes as a loud jam suddenly expanded OKC’s lead to 17 points with seven minutes left.

Williams has been the Thunder’s second-best scorer since his arrival. He had a quiet first three quarters, but a monster final frame more than made up for it.

Even though the level of intensity has multiplied tenfold, the 23-year-old has translated his fourth-quarter takeovers from the regular season to the playoffs.

“I got looks that I worked on that didn’t go in,” Williams said on his fourth quarter. “Just kinda understand it’s basketball and have a next-play mentality… Just trying to stay aggressive. My team trusts me to make plays.”

The Mavericks kept trying to attack the paint, but Holmgren flexed his rim protection by holding them to 42% shooting inside the paint. The seven-foot rookie played a vital role in this lopsided win.

In 31 minutes, Holmgren finished with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting, seven rebounds and three blocks. He shot 2-of-5 from 3. He was a plus-18.

After a week off, the rest did Holmgren well as he played with an extra burst against Dallas. He had a hot start with 11 points in the first half. A pair of early baskets in the fourth quarter contributed to OKC running away.

A big concern heading into this series was how the Thunder would handle lob threats like Gafford and Lively II. Through one game, OKC has passed that challenge with ease. Gafford was a minus-two in 27 minutes and Lively II was a minus-13 in 13 minutes.

If Holmgren continues to be a massive contributor on both sides, the Thunder will have a significant shot of advancing past Round 2.

Not checking into the contest until the second quarter, Wiggins quickly made up for lost time with a monster frame. The third-year wing scored 12 points in the period to help OKC enter halftime with a double-digit lead.

In 23 minutes off the bench, Wiggins finished with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, five rebounds and two assists. He shot 3-of-4 from 3 and the free-throw line. He was a plus-18.

The outside shot fell for Wiggins in this contest. He was an outside option for OKC as all three of his makes resulted in assists. In a playoff series, surprise outings like these from role players can swing a game. That happened in Game 1 for the Thunder with Wiggins’ performance.

‘”Being on that court, you can’t take it for granted,” Wiggins said. “Just happy to be healthy and go out there and take advantage of the opportunities I have.”

Eagles director of scouting Brandon Hunt to interview for Patriots GM role

The Eagles could be set to lose another key member of the front office personnel, as Adam Schefter reports that Brandon Hunt will interview for the Patriots lead personnel job (GM).

The Eagles could be set to lose another key front office personnel member, as Adam Schefter reports that Brandon Hunt will interview for the Patriots’ lead personnel job (GM).

Hunt was a homegrown talent for the Steelers and a Pittsburgh native who attended IUP and had been learning on the job under Kevin Colbert for almost 15 years.

Hunt officially joined Pittsburgh’s scouting department in 2010 and was named the pro scouting coordinator for Houston after Doug Whaley was hired as the general manager of the Buffalo Bills.

The move to Philadelphia was essentially a trade of front-office personnel, with Andy Weidl joining the Steelers as Omar Khan’s assistant GM.

For New England, the interview process is a chance to balance the front office with proper titles after former head coach Bill Belichick did not have a traditionally titled general manager in his 24 seasons.

Krafts (ownership) hasn’t employed one since owning the team, and current senior personnel Eliot Wolf is the favorite to land the job.

Pachuca vs. Club America: How to watch Liga MX playoffs, TV channel, live stream

The two sides will meet for the third time in just two weeks

Club América and Pachuca will face off Wednesday night in the first leg of the Liga MX Clausura quarterfinal.

These two sides are getting very familiar with one another, having just met in the two-leg Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal.

Pachuca emerged victorious from that tie, defeating América 2-1 in last week’s second leg to clinch a spot in the final against the Columbus Crew.

Since that match, Tuzos have had to play twice while América hasn’t played at all. As the seventh seed, Pachuca had to go through the play-in round, losing its first match against Pumas on penalties.

That forced Pachuca to face Necaxa on Sunday with a place in the quarterfinal on the line, with Tuzos defeating Rayos 2-1 to clinch a spot in the last eight.

América clinched the top seed in the Liguilla by finishing in first place in the Clausura regular season, and will be looking to make it back-to-back Liga MX titles after clinching the Apertura in the winter.

The winner of this tie will move into the semifinal, where they’ll face either Monterrey or Tigres.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the match.

Todd Bowles on how Baker Mayfield revived his career with the Bucs

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles discusses Baker Mayfield’s career revival

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed quarterback Baker Mayfield to a one-year deal last offseason, it felt like the former No. 1 overall pick’s last chance to prove he could be a successful starter in the NFL.

He responded with the best season of his career, earning a Pro Bowl nod while leading the Bucs to a third straight NFC South title and a fourth consecutive trip to the postseason.

The Bucs rewarded Mayfield with a new three-year contract extension, so Mayfield now heads into the 2024 season with long-term job security as Tampa Bay’s unquestioned starter.

Bucs head coach recently appeared on “The Rich Eisen Show” to discuss how Mayfield revived his career in Tampa Bay:
