Texas vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The defense went bye-bye in the 116-103 loss to Kansas State in the first meeting.

Let’s just say that was a bit of an aberration.

The Longhorn defense might give up points, but it’s great at taking the ball away, it’s solid at gorging the three. and it all works with an offense that gets up and down the floor in a hurry.

Kansas State might be able to fill it up when the threes are falling, but this is more of a defensive team that would like to keep the game in the 70s and rely on the key defensive stops.

It can run the floor, but it’s not built to go flying up and down like Texas is, but …

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State is at home.

The Wildcats might have lost a few games over the last couple of weeks, but they were on the road. At home they’ve been a killer with the defense doing a dominant job of holding up against the three.

Again, Texas likes to make things happen on the move. It’s not that it can’t hit from three, but it’s far batter when it’s active. That doesn’t mean Kansas State will slow things down, but it’ll be more deliberate and …

What’s Going To Happen

12-0. That’s what Kansas State is in Bramlage, doing a great job of taking the defense up a few notches.

Texas will go through scoring spurts to push the Wildcats out of their comfort zone a bit, but things will settle down in the middle of the second half as the D takes over.

Kansas State hit 13 threes in the first meeting helped by 23 assists. It won’t get that many in either category this time around, but it’ll move the ball around well enough to avoid the Texas pressure.

Texas vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The two weeks off should make a difference.

Kansas State has had an interesting few weeks with the tough loss at TCU followed up by the shocking obliteration of Oklahoma State, and Texas has had a little time to rest up and be ready for the finishing kick. Now it has to be sharp.

How did Kansas State destroy the Cowboys 48-0? The defense picked a perfect time to come up with its best performance of the year, but that wasn’t normal for the run D.

Get Bijan Robinson going, keep grinding it, and getting to 200 yards is possible on the Wildcat front. It’ll be the other side, though, that matters.

Kansas State is throwing better – Will Howard was fantastic in place of a banged up Adrian Martinez against OSU – but it has to run to win.  Texas has more of a downfield passing game if Robinson and the ground attack don’t rock, but there’s a problem if Kansas State isn’t running well.

It got by Iowa State and its great defense in a fight, but it lost the other two times it was under 199 rushing yards.

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Kansas State Will Win

It’s not a bad thing when you’re trying to figure out the right good quarterback to play.

This is still Adrian Martinez’s team, but Will Howard has been too good to push aside after the performance against Oklahoma State. Everyone knows what the offense can do – get running, let Deuce Vaughn go off – but if there’s a passing game, too, look out.

Run well, hit the third down throws, and rely on the hot defense and turnover margin to get it done. The team is +9, Texas doesn’t take the ball away, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s the problem. Can the Kansas State defense dominate?

Texas doesn’t have a problem moving the ball, and Kansas State is 4-0 when allowing fewer than 300 yards and 2-2 when it doesn’t.

The Longhorns will come out firing with two weeks to get ready and will have a big first half. At home, the Wildcats will settle in after halftime, the running game will take over, and the momentum from the Oklahoma State game will continue.

Game Preview: Texas vs Kansas State

The winner could have the inside track to face TCU in the Big 12 championship.

The Texas Longhorns (5-3) face the Kansas State Wildcats (6-2) on Saturday. The game will likely determine who has the inside track to face TCU in the Big 12 championship.

Last week Kansas State dismantled the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 48-0. Although Oklahoma State has the tie breaker over Texas, a loss like that could be the nail in the coffin for the Cowboys.

Kansas State’s last performance seems like an anomaly because of how they won the game. The Wildcats scored 48 points to raise their season average to 31.0 points per game. Backup quarterback Will Howard played above his weight class, completing 21 of 37 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns.

Texas fans remember Will Howard, who quarterbacked the Wildcats in their last two meetings with the Longhorns. Howard’s performances left much to be desired.

Kansas State’s defensive performance was not fool’s gold. The Wildcats are among the best defensive teams in the country.

Let’s break down how the game will unfold.

Letter to Texas Football: Play your game

Play loose, but stay focused. It’s a new season for Texas football following the bye.

Texas has a great chance to win on Saturday. If they made the changes they should have over the bye week, the Longhorns will look like a much better team than they did against Oklahoma State.

Prior to the Oklahoma game I opined that if Texas played like they have for most of the season they would win. Texas won convincingly.

I feel similarly about this game. In general, if Texas plays like they played in the seven games before Oklahoma State, the Longhorns have all the ability to win.

Steve Sarkisian will be tasked with bringing a team that is focused but loose as they enter a tough road environment. If they do the following things, Texas should stay alive in the Big 12 race.

What to expect in Texas vs. Kansas State

With so much uncertainty surrounding the game, there are a few aspects to be expected on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns’ on field performance has many football watchers unsure of how they will play against Kansas State. Both teams have proven capable of great football, but each has proven vulnerable this season.

Texas played poorly against Oklahoma State, but much of that revolved around an uncharacteristic performance from their starting quarterback. If Quinn Ewers had an average game, the Longhorns probably win the game with ease. The same could be true of this week’s matchup.

As for their opposition, don’t expect the Wildcats to beat themselves. Kansas State is yet another fundamentally sound Big 12 opponent for Texas. Chris Klieman’s team has a couple dangerous weapons of its own in Deuce Vaughn and Malik Knowles.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the game, there are a few aspects to be expected on Saturday.

Four ways Texas could attack Kansas State

There’s more than one way to negate the Kansas State pass rush.

Kansas State is one of the best defensive teams in the Big 12. You could argue they’re about as good as Iowa State if not better.

While the Wildcats are known for a stout pass rush, they have shown the ability to stifle the run as well. In their last game, they held the Oklahoma State rushing attack to 54 rushing yards. Backup Gunnar Gundy accounted for half of the production with 27 yards on five carries.

Nobody mistakes any Oklahoma State running back for an elite rusher, but a defensive performance like that is worthy of attention.

Texas has seemingly unlimited firepower, but Kansas State should force the Longhorns to make difficult plays on Saturday. Here’s how Steve Sarkisian could attack the opposing defense this week.

What a win over No. 13 Kansas State would mean for Steve Sarkisian

A win on Saturday could signal change for Texas.

The Texas Longhorns are 5-3 with two losses in conference play so far this season. And while it could certainly be worse, the second year of Steve Sarkisian’s tenure has left something to be desired.

The Longhorns head coach could be a victim of early success this season. In the early game against Alabama, Texas proved it could compete with any team in the country. Nevertheless, the Longhorns have yet to bring that intensity on a consistent basis. Now, Texas has to focus on doing the simplest of fundamentals well.

Texas’ next four games are far from easy. Kansas State and TCU lead the Big 12 race, while Baylor has played its way back into contention.

A win on Saturday could signal change for Texas. Let’s look at what it would mean for Steve Sarkisian’s tenure.

Why Texas Will Win

Texas is struggling. Kansas State is really having issues.

The Wildcats are on a ten-game losing streak including an 82-67 loss in Austin to the Longhorns back in mid-January. Texas was hardly perfect, but it seemed to hit just about from the field – it nailed 53% of its shots – but that’s not all that far off from the norm for the Big 12’s worst defense.

Kansas State’s D is bad, the O is playing worse, and there’s no rebounding and a whole lot of mistakes. Other than that, everything is going great in Manhattan. But …

Why Kansas State Will Win

It’s not like Texas is turning out the lights on anyone lately … except for Kansas State.

That was the only win since January 9th, losing four of the last five games losing a few close games and getting rocked by Baylor. The Longhorns were miserable from the free throw line against the Bears, and they couldn’t seem to hit a three against Oklahoma State.

Kansas State needs a few breaks. Texas makes enough mistakes to let that happen, and the Wildcats have to take advantage of every one of them. They’re going to keep firing up the threes and they could keep the pressure on.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansa State is having way too many issues putting the biscuit in the basket.

It’s not getting totally annihilated at home – at least not always – having most of its problems on the road. It’ll slow things down enough to not let this get too out of hand, but Texas will be able to pull away in the second half by finally getting the shooting touch back.

Why Texas Will Win

The Kansas State defense has gone bye-bye.

What’s been the huge problem over the four game losing streak? The run defense struggled, the pass defense struggled, and against Oklahoma State, the offense struggled.

For Kansas State to be Kansas State, it has to control the clock and own third downs, and it’s not doing that. The passing game has stalled and the offense hasn’t hit 400 yards in any of the last six games.

Everyone wants to rip on Texas and Tom Herman, but the team isn’t playing poorly. It’s been in fight after fight, and it could just as easily be playing this weekend to get into the Big 12 championship as it is to be an also-ran.

The passing game picked it up against Iowa State, but …

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Kansas State Will Win

Texas isn’t owning the clock like it should.

QB Sam Ehlinger should be a third down conversion machine, but he isn’t doing it enough – the offense should be a whole lot better at coming up with clutch drives.

For all of Kansas State’s issues, the offensive line isn’t doing a horrible job – the running game came up with well over 220 yards in two of the last three weeks –  the pass rush is good enough to bother Ehlinger, and if the passing game was ever going to work, this would be the week.

The Texas pass defense has collapsed, allowing way over 1,000 yards over the last three games, but …

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State can’t throw. It has to run to win, but the Texas defensive front has improved over the last month and should be able to hold this game in check.

Texas might not be perfect, and it has certainly been a disappointment overall, but it was on a three-game winning streak before failing to close out Iowa State last week. It’ll get the groove back in yet another close, interesting game that comes down to the wire.

No one plays up or down to the competition like Texas does. It’ll do it again.
