Texas Tech (16-8) vs Iowa State (2-19) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Iowa State Will Win

Iowa State hasn’t been all that bad from the field.

It’s not scoring in bunches, and it’s having issues from three, but it’s been able to hit at last 40% from the field over the last three games – a huge step up after going weeks without getting to the mark.

Texas Tech might have a solid defense, but it commits a ton of fouls. For all of Iowa State’s problems, it’s great from the free-throw line … when it gets there.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raiders have the defense to shut this all down.

If Iowa State wants to keep the score low and the game close, Texas Tech is built for it. It’s used to dealing with games played in the 60s, mostly because it’s the one that’s doing the job defensively.

The Cyclones shot well in the first meeting in early January and still lost 91-64. They’re the worst in the Big 12 on the boards, they can’t make up for their misses with putbacks, and they’re running into a Red Raider D that’s still the best in the Big 12 in points allowed, giving up 72 points per game.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State will have its moments early on when it’ll look like it’ll make this a game, and then it’ll go dead cold for a long stretch to end the drama. Texas Tech will be strong enough from the field – it’s been shooting well over the last month – to steadily keep increasing the lead.

Texas (14-6) vs Texas Tech (14-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns pulled up out of the nosedive with a strong five games, even in the losses – there’s no shame in losing in double overtime at Oklahoma State and by two in a good fight against West Virginia.

The team isn’t all that consistent shooting, but it’s starting to do a better job of finding ways to produce. The shots weren’t falling against Kansas, but the Longhorns rebounded everything and was always on the line.

On the flip side, Texas Tech has hit a snag – it’s managing to play okay and lose.

The Red Raiders aren’t shooting well enough, it’s not doing much of anything from three, and it’s not coming up with the big plays at the big times.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Texas continues to turn it over way too often.

For all of the good things the Longhorns are doing, a lot are being undone by making a whole slew of mistakes. They’re also wildly inconsistent, especially from the outside – they hit half of their threes against West Virginia and Kansas State and couldn’t hit a thing against Kansas, Oklahoma State or TCU.

Texas Tech isn’t playing poorly, it’s just not winning.

The defense has been solid – especially against teams from three – and unlike Texas, it’s not making a slew of mistakes or turning the ball over.

What’s Going To Happen

The Red Raiders got the Longhorns back in mid-January in an entertaining fight on the road. They didn’t shoot particularly well, but they went to the free throw line over and over and over again – they made four more free throws and won by two.

Expect something close to that again. Texas Tech will win the turnover and mistake battle and will get just a few extra points on the line to finally stop the current slide.

Texas Tech (14-7) vs Oklahoma State (14-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Tech Will Win

This time it’s personal.

The Red Raiders lost at home to Oklahoma State in overtime back at the beginning of 2021 even though the defense was great from three, there weren’t a slew of mistakes, and the team was good on the line.

They went on a nice run of six wins in eight games before losing two straight to West Virginia and Kansas, but they’re still shooting well and the defense hasn’t been bad.

They don’t turn it over on a consistent basis, the D is strong at holding most teams to under 70, and they should be ready to handle a team that’s reeling a bit.

Oklahoma State has won five of its last seven games, but they were almost all against the Big 12’s lightweights.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Texas Tech has lost its mojo from three.

It’s last in the Big 12 in threes per game, it hasn’t been consistent enough, and now it’s going against an Oklahoma State defense that closes hard on the outside.

The Red Raiders have only hit the 40% mark from three once in the last five games – and that’s the norm. On the other side, Baylor is the only team to hit 40% from three on the Cowboys since mid-December.

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma State isn’t shooting all that well lately, but Texas Tech’s defense hasn’t been anything special over the last few games.

Both teams move the ball around well and both will trade big shots for big shots. It’ll be an entertaining up-and-down game with the Cowboys overcoming Texas Tech hitting just about everything from the free throw line with a few key rebounds in the final moments.

Texas Tech (14-6) vs Kansas (16-7) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Tech Will Win

In a making lemonade out of lemons sort of way, at least the Red Raiders are rested.

They haven’t been able to play since February 9th, and they’re coming off a loss to West Virginia they’ve had to sit and stew on turning that time. Even with the loss, they were still decent from the field – the Mountaineers were lights out from the outside.

Yes, Kansas is on a nice run since its own loss to West Virginia, but it beat a horrible Iowa State team twice and a struggling Kansas State along the way. For the most part, ever since the win over Oklahoma back in mid-January, there’s only one nice win – a home victory over Oklahoma State.

On the flip side, yes, Texas Tech has lost three of its last six games, but two of the defeats were to West Virginia and the other was to Baylor. However …

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas was able to bog down Texas Tech in the 58-57 win in Lubbock back in mid-December, and the team has the right mix and style to do it again.

The Red Raiders have the Big 12’s best scoring defense, and that works for a Kansas team that’s happy to win by moving the ball around and dominating on the boards. Texas Tech is a good rebounding team, but KU is great.

It’s been able to keep three of the last four teams and four of the last six under 30% from three, and it did that in the first win over the Red Raiders, too.

What’s Going To Happen

The Jayhawks will continue to be great at home – they’ve only lose once to Texas back in early January – with the advantage on the boards just enough to overcome a big Red Raider run in the second half.

Texas Tech (14-6) vs TCU (11-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why TCU Will Win

It’s a decent all-around TCU team that can get hot from three, is relatively consistent from the outside, and it’s normally great at moving the ball around.

When the extra pass comes and the offense is hitting from 45% from the field or better, it’s able to hang around with just about anyone. Texas Tech’s defense is strong overall, but it struggled a bit lately – especially against West Virginia – allowing teams to hit 45% or better from the field in four of the last seven games.

TCU should generate enough second chance points on the boards to help the percentage, but …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raider defense really is that good.

West Virginia was able to crack the code with the two wins over the last few weeks, doing a great job of nailing everything from three connecting on more than 55% from the outside. TCU can hit from three, but it’s more consistent than sensational.

Texas Tech is too good on the offensive boards and the defense is too good at forcing mistakes. TCU doesn’t force enough turnovers to matter.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech will get back on track after the loss to West Virginia.

The defense will clamp down on a TCU offense that doesn’t shoot well enough overall and doesn’t have the firepower to go on a big run to keep up.

Texas Tech Football Schedule Analysis: The Red Raiders start out in NRG Stadium against Houston, and that’s the only real non-conference concern with Stephen F. Austin and FIU the other two games – and they need the easy road into the season.

The Big 12 campaign starts out with three road games in the first four and four in the first six before finally getting a break in early November. That means it’s a nine-week run before taking a breath.

Worse yet, they get five Big 12 road games including Oklahoma and Texas, but Iowa State, Oklahoma State and TCU have to come to Lubbock.

Texas Tech Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: It’s a 3-0 start through an easy non-conference schedule, and they’re able to get through a tough first four weeks of the Big 12 with at least two wins, and maybe three.

Realistically, they lose a few of the road games early on, but with a week off they come out rested and roaring for the home game against Iowa State and shock Oklahoma State on the way to one of the program’s best seasons in years.

Texas Tech Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: A loss to Houston right out of the gate hurts, but it’s not as bad as starting out 0-3 in Big 12 play including a hole defeat to TCU. The second half run of losses at Oklahoma, Iowa State and Oklahoma State ensures a losing campaign before the regular season finale at Baylor.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

After pushing West Virginia hard in an 88-87 loss in Morgantown, Texas Tech got hot again. In the four Big 12 losses, two of them were by a total of two points, one was in overtime against Oklahoma State, and once was in a 68-60 loss against a terrific Baylor team.

The Red Raiders are playing well.

The pulled out a low-scoring slugfest with Oklahoma, they stepped up the the offense at LSU, and they hit the three-foot putt on the road against Kansas State with the threes dropping, and the defense doing a good enough job overall.

West Virginia has been a bit inconsistent from the field and especially from three, but …

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers are doing a great job on the road. They’ve won their last three away from Morgantown mainly by rebounding absolutely everything.

This team knows how to attack. It attacks the offensive boards, it forces a slew of turnovers, and it has no problems adapting and adjusting when needed when the shots aren’t falling.

Texas Tech is just okay at defending the three and for all the good things it’s doing lately, this isn’t one of the better shooting teams in the Big 12.

What’s Going To Happen

This should be terrific.

Texas Tech if back at home after playing three of its last four and five of its last seven away from Lubbock.

West Virginia will force enough mistakes will be relentless enough to make this a fight throughout, but Texas Tech is doing a good enough job on the offensive boards to at least not have a problem, and the defense will come up with a great performance late.

This will come down to the last few minutes and free throws. The Red Raiders will hit just a few more.

Big 12 College Football Recruiting: Team Rankings, Top Players, Biggest Strengths, What’s Missing

How did all of the Big 12 teams do in the 2021 recruiting season? The Big 12 recruiting rankings, the stars, top players, biggest strengths.

How did all of the Big 12 teams do this recruiting season? Here are the recruiting rankings for the conference, along with the stars for each team, top players, and biggest strengths.

[jwplayer sAUsa6ez]

2021 Big 12 Recruiting Rankings, Breakdown

No, really. How good were the Big 12 classes this 2021 recruiting season?

1. Oklahoma

Once again, Oklahoma dominated the conference recruiting by a mile helped by the coaching uncertainty at Texas throughout the process and with the rest of the Big 12 being the rest of the Big 12. There’s more for the already-great passing game, more pass rushers, and more talent with the top ten Sooner signings stronger than anything the rest of the Big 12 – maybe without Texas – can put together combined.

2. Texas

It’s fine. Compared to the rest of the Big 12 it’s great, compared to Oklahoma it’s just okay, and considering the coaching uncertainty, it’s a solid class. It’s not nearly as huge as the 2019 version, and last year’s class cranked up the speed and talent level, but this one has a whole lot of athletes, a lot for the defense backfield and receiver, and the lines will be left for future classes.

3. West Virginia

The first class under Neal Brown was mostly about infrastructure, but this one is going after the future stars for the skill spots with good running backs, a few nice tight ends, and the pass rushers to be more disruptive. No, the Mountaineers aren’t going to compete with Oklahoma and Texas for talent, but they got enough great prospects to be among the best of the league’s other eight teams.

4. Oklahoma State

The secondary got enough talent to see a decent upgrade going forward, and there were a whole lot of receiver prospects. There’s not a ton of high-end talent, but the program never gets the big-time five-star types and it still does more than fine. It’s a very good class, but it’s not close to what Oklahoma was able to get and it doesn’t have high-end talent of Texas.

5. Kansas

The recruiting has been building. Les Miles upgraded the talent level in last year’s class, and this one takes things up a few notches with a whole slew of defensive backs who could’ve played anywhere in the Big 12, and with a nod to the passing game with a few quarterbacks to develop along with some good-looking receivers.

2021 Big 12 Recruiting
Every Team’s Star | Class Strengths
What’s Missing | 2021 All-Big 12 Recruiting Team

6. Iowa State

It’s another class of solid Iowa State prospects without a whole slew of superstars, but there are just enough good players to develop into what the program does. RB Eli Sanders is more of a quick back than the usual pounder, and the few offensive linemen brought in are good.

7. TCU

If the 2019 class was about quantity, and the 2002 class was about quality, this one is in the middle. There’s enough skill talent to add to the mix to build around for the near future, and as always under Gary Patterson, write the positions for the prospects in pencil – they’ll be moved around where they’ll fit best.

8. Kansas State

Lsat year was about getting bodies and building things up under head coach Chris Klieman, but this time around the class is looking to do more to upgrade the overall talent level. QB Jake Rubley is the main man for the near future and the star to build around, but the defense got the most bulk talent.

9. Texas Tech

You never want to rely on two players to make a recruiting class, but it’s all about QB Behren Morton and RB Cam’Ron Vadez. They’re the two high-end talents who could’ve gone almost anywhere, and they’re what take this class from okay to potentially strong.

10. Baylor

The class a few years ago was strong, there wasn’t any time for Dave Aranda to work in 2020, and now this season’s class is just sort of okay. The hope was for the full season to load up would lead to something big, but it’s a smallish haul of prospects without any sure-thing superstars.
