Texas vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

That was a dangerous landmine Texas just sidestepped.

UTSA is a solid team, the Longhorns were banged up and coming off the heartbreaking loss to Alabama, and everything appeared set up for a massive letdown. Instead, this team showed it might really be different.

Hudson Card was fine with Quinn Ewers out, Bijan Robinson went off – 183 yards and three touchdowns on a hurt ankle – and everything went fine in the 41-20 win. And why?

The defense.

The running game rolled for almost 300 yards, but the biggest difference this year is a Texas D that’s actually tackling people. The overall stats might not be great, but it’s only allowing 17 points per game, the pass defense has been good enough, and yeah, the offense has been good through the injuries.

Texas Tech’s offense hasn’t kicked in yet. The line hasn’t been great, the seven turnovers in the last two games are too many, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Texas Tech Will Win

There’s going to be a learning curve, but eventually the O will work.

It hasn’t been the Western Kentucky high-octane attack of 2021 – that’s what it’s supposed to be under offensive coordinator Zach Kittley – but the passing game has been okay, there’s just enough of a running game to do something, and things should be far better once the turnovers slow down.

The biggest difference, though, is the defense. It shut down the Houston running game and kept NC State to just 270 yards in last week’s 27-14 loss – the four turnovers by the O did the team in.

The run D is the second best in the Big 12, the passing attack leads the conference – even if, again, it’s not going ballistic – and Texas is going to have to work in more of a grind than it might like.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech has enough of a pass rush to be a bother, and the run defense so far has been terrific. That might be enough to keep this close. It also helps that the Texas D doesn’t take the ball away in bunches.

Quinn Ewers is at least expected to dress for the game, but Texas will win on another solid day from Robinson and a great performance from a pass defense that will hold up throughout.

It’ll be a fight, though.

Texas vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The defense has been suffocating.

It’s one thing to hold down Oklahoma and TCU under 55 points, and it’s another to clamp down in a fight against Tennessee to pull off a 52-51 win against a team that knows how to D up.

It’s as much about the style of play as it is the defense, but the Longhorns are great on the free throw line – at least they usually are; the TCU and Tennessee games were a struggle there – and they have a way of keeping teams from finding any sort of a transitional groove.

This is the No. 1 scoring defense in the nation, and it should be able stifle a Texas Tech team that just doesn’t do enough from three.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Texas doesn’t let teams score in bunches, but Texas Tech doesn’t let teams score at all.

For all of the good things Texas does, Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in field goal percentage defense, it rebounds everything, and no one in the league takes more free throws.

Texas plays defense and has to keep the score low. Texas Tech plays defense and has no problems hanging around the 70s.

No, really …

Texas vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Well there’s the passing game.

Texas Tech used to wake up in the morning and throw for 400 yards for breakfast, but the last time it hit the four-bill mark against an FBS team was against Oklahoma State in early October 2019.

The 2016 Red Raiders threw for over 500 seven times with some Mahomes guy throwing for 734 yards in a loss to Oklahoma.

Against FIU, Tyler Shough started to look like the top NFL prospect a whole lot of people think he could be, with 399 yards – the team threw for 407 – with four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a whole lot of big plays down the field.

Texas hasn’t faced a passing game yet.

Louisiana threw okay, but it had to because the running game didn’t work. Arkansas didn’t do much through the air, but that’s because the backfield was running all over the Longhorns. And Rice … it was a perfectly balanced offense of bleeeech.

Now the Texas secondary gets tested just as the Red Raiders might be hitting their stride. But on the flip side …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Will Win

The Texas Tech defense hasn’t faced much of a running game yet.

This might be one of the strongest front sevens the Red Raiders have had in years, and they have yet to allow more than 80 yards on the ground. That’s partly because they faced Houston, Stephen F. Austin, and FIU.

As good as the offense has been, this isn’t a team that’s going to win the time of possession battle no matter how well everything is working. Texas is going to run, run, and run some more after the explosion kicked in with a 427-yard day against Rice.

Casey Thompson has hit 77% of his passes so far – limited in the first two games and terrific against the Owls – the O is the best in the Big 12 at converting on third downs, and overall, the team isn’t making a whole lot of mistakes.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is where the Texas lines have to show up.

The defensive front got gouged by Arkansas, but that’s not a problem this week. There won’t be a slew of sacks, but just pressuring Shough enough to make him fully trust his first read will be enough.

The Longhorns will be balanced after the Red Raider defense comes up with a strong first quarter. It won’t be a perfect performance, and it won’t be a 63-56 win like last year, but it’ll be a strong Big 12 start for Steve Sarkisian.

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns got through the adversity of having to play four straight road games – it wasn’t able to play in Austin since February 23rd – and kept on rolling with three wins in the bunch.

It’s great on the boards, the three point defense is solid, and the team has been shooting really, really well, making over half of their shots in the last three games and doing a nice job from three.

Texas Tech doesn’t make enough threes, the there aren’t enough rebounds on the defensive end, and …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raiders did just fine a few weeks ago in the 68-59 win over Texas.

They were fine from the field, stopped Texas and its offense, and they more than held their owns on the boards to eliminate second chance point opportunities.

Texas Tech is about the defensive side, leading the Big 12 in scoring D, doing a great job of keeping games low-scoring, close, and then getting to the free throw line. The team took 26 free throws in the last win over Texas and 28 in in the first meeting.

What’s Going To Happen

Both games were close with the little things making a difference – and the Red Raiders being on the right side thanks to doing a bit more defensively.

Texas Tech got Texas twice with free throws, doing a bit more from the field, and by winning the turnover battle. It’ll be another close, tight battle, and it’ll be another Red Raider win.

Texas (14-6) vs Texas Tech (14-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns pulled up out of the nosedive with a strong five games, even in the losses – there’s no shame in losing in double overtime at Oklahoma State and by two in a good fight against West Virginia.

The team isn’t all that consistent shooting, but it’s starting to do a better job of finding ways to produce. The shots weren’t falling against Kansas, but the Longhorns rebounded everything and was always on the line.

On the flip side, Texas Tech has hit a snag – it’s managing to play okay and lose.

The Red Raiders aren’t shooting well enough, it’s not doing much of anything from three, and it’s not coming up with the big plays at the big times.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Texas continues to turn it over way too often.

For all of the good things the Longhorns are doing, a lot are being undone by making a whole slew of mistakes. They’re also wildly inconsistent, especially from the outside – they hit half of their threes against West Virginia and Kansas State and couldn’t hit a thing against Kansas, Oklahoma State or TCU.

Texas Tech isn’t playing poorly, it’s just not winning.

The defense has been solid – especially against teams from three – and unlike Texas, it’s not making a slew of mistakes or turning the ball over.

What’s Going To Happen

The Red Raiders got the Longhorns back in mid-January in an entertaining fight on the road. They didn’t shoot particularly well, but they went to the free throw line over and over and over again – they made four more free throws and won by two.

Expect something close to that again. Texas Tech will win the turnover and mistake battle and will get just a few extra points on the line to finally stop the current slide.

Texas (1-0) vs Texas Tech (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

Here comes the Texas passing game.

Sam Ehlinger threw for 426 yards and five touchdowns in barely a half of work in the 59-3 over UTEP. Texas Tech? It got hammered by Bailey Zappe and Houston Baptist for 567 passing yards and four scores in the 35-33 Red Raider win.

The Longhorn offense was red-hot from the start, it’s got the offensive depth to keep the pressure on Texas Tech’s secondary throughout, and it’s going to let the running game eat, too.

Basically, the team had its tune-up game.

Houston Baptist didn’t get any pressure on Red Raider QB Alan Bowman. Texas will.

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Texas Tech got its tune-up game out of the way, too.

It might have been a rough second half against HBU, but it got to feel the pressure of a tight game, and it got the win. Texas went through a light scrimmage and wasn’t tested in any way.

Bowman threw for 430 yards and two touchdowns – he was sharp after missing most of last year – and SaRodorick Thompson provided a running game to balance things out a bit. Thompson was arrested after getting into a car race earlier this summer, but he’s expected to go.

The Texas Tech defense might have issues, but the offense will keep pushing all game long.

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech will get its yards, and it’ll make things interesting, but the Texas offense will hit on all cylinders. It’s not going to be Ehlinger throwing for 400 yards, but the attack will blow past the 500-yard mark with the running game taking over as the game goes on.

Texas (6-5) vs. Texas Tech (4-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Turn the passing game loose.

This might not be the high-powered offensive Texas Tech fun show that everyone knew and loved, but it’s a good attack that’s averaging 318 yards per game through the air and still getting the job done to keep things moving.

Jett Duffey has added the mobile element that’s been lacking from the attack, and he’s also consistently hitting the 300-yard mark lately with more downfield passes and big plays. He threw two picks against Kansas State, but for the most part he hasn’t been making mistakes.

The Texas secondary got hit for too many shots against Baylor, is allowing 200 yards per game getting off the bus, and overall the team just isn’t sharp enough.

It’s not making the key plays in big moments in the run of three losses in the last four games.

Speaking of not being able to win the tight battles …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Texas Will Win

Texas Tech was able to whack around West Virginia, but it has lost three of its last four games and four of its last six by three points or fewer.

The Texas secondary might be rocky, but the Texas Tech defensive backfield is having massive problems – it’s the worst in the Big 12.

The turnover margin was an issue against Kansas State, and the run defense was the problem against TCU, but the secondary was bombed on for close to 500 yards against West Virginia, gave up over 400 to Kansas, and isn’t doing enough to get off the field.

Sam Ehlinger hasn’t been boring away like he did earlier in the season, but when he’s averaging nine yards or more per throw, Texas is 4-0. Last year he hit Texas Tech for 312 yards and four scores in the 41-34 win – averaging over nine yards per throw. This year, the Red Raiders are giving up 8.9 yards per pass.

Ehlinger is going to bomb away when needed.

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be another tight game for both teams. It doesn’t matter for Texas – it’s already bowl eligible – but with the collapse over the last part of the season, it would be a big, big problem for Tom Herman to lose this.

He’s not on any real hot seat, but even with the upcoming bowl game, it would be a massive negative to lose to a mediocre Texas Tech team at home.

The last four losses have all been away from Austin, and the last three home games were wins. The Texas offense will be a wee bit more efficient and consistent than Texas Tech’s when it’ll have to be.
