Why Texas A&M Will Win

Let’s just say A&M got its first game out of the way.

The Aggies have a far stronger offense than the one that showed up against Vanderbilt. It was just … off. However, most teams haven’t been quite right to start the 2020 season.

A&M needs to control the clock – it didn’t do that against the Commodores in the 17-12 win. It can’t turn the ball over three times like it did last week, the first game penalties and misfires have to be cleaned up, and the timing of the entire attack has to be a whole lot sharper.

However, the running game wasn’t bad, there were enough good midrange throws from Kellen Mond, and now the O has to figure out how to score.

Okay, so good luck with that against Alabama. This is on Mond, but he hasn’t been all that awful in his three cracks against the Tide, and this is his game to step up and shine.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Alabama Will Win

Start fast, be balanced, and end this fast. That’s what Alabama did against Missouri and it coasted from there.

On the plus side for the Tide, the game was essentially over after the first quarter, the defense was a bit leaky in the fourth quarter, and now this seems like one of those games that they come out and play an air-tight full four quarters after the letup.

Mac Jones was fantastic against the Tigers – hitting 18-of-24 passes for 249 yards and two scores – Najee Harris was excellent with 98 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and even with all of the positives there’s still something to shoot for.

The offense line was okay, but it’s going to need to be better. Expect an even stronger all-around game from the Tide front five.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Watch out for Mond to be solid.

The game was over, but Missouri’s Shawn Robinson stepped in and hit 19-of-25 passes against the Tide secondary. Mond doesn’t have to go KJ Costello and bomb away, but he’s a good enough veteran to settle in and keep things moving just enough to make the game a battle.

A fired up A&M team will be far, far stronger than it was last week, but the Alabama running game will take over in the second half. Jones will be strong enough to keep the Tide offense moving when it has to.

Texas A&M (0-0) vs Vanderbilt (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The defense is going to be a whole lot better after a year of breaking in several new starters.

At the very least, it’s going to be very, very experienced with the top 11 tacklers returning and 26 of the top 28 back in the mix. There’s size, depth, and enough options to keep a good rotation going in the secondary to match up with the good group of Aggie receivers.

A&M is still going to want to control the clock, run things at its own pace, and handle the tempo that suits its style. It’s not going to go 100 miles per hour, and it’s going to suit the Vandy way of playing just fine. But …

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The Vanderbilt offense that only scored 198 points all of last year and struggled to get to 14 points isn’t going to come out blazing.

There are a few issues on the A&M offensive side – at least when it comes to depth – but the defense has the upside to be fantastic. The pass rush has to be a bit better, but the linebackers are terrific and the big – literally large and tall – defensive backs shouldn’t have too much of an issue with the Commodore receivers.

Vandy is all but starting over on O, which isn’t a bad thing considering the issues of 2019, but it’s going to take a while and a few tune-ups that the team won’t get.

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

A&M will come out sharp. It’ll get up early, settle in, and won’t have too many issues in a comfortable win.

The Vanderbilt defense is good enough to keep this from getting completely out of hand, and the offense will come up with a few fourth quarter scores after the issue has been well decided.

College Football 2020: 5 (Potentially) Stupid SEC Predictions

Five bold, crazy, stupid, daring, wacky SEC college football predictions for the 2020 season.

Five bold, crazy, stupid, daring, wacky SEC college football predictions for the 2020 season.

5 (Potentially) Stupid SEC Predictions

As if everything we’re going through in the college football world – and in real life – isn’t stupid enough, let’s take it all down a few levels.

What if you were told last year at this time that Lane Kiffin would be at Ole Miss and Mike Leach at Mississippi State?

What if you were told that Lynn Bowden would turn out to be a star quarterback at Kentucky, and Tennessee would end up winning a bowl game after starting 1-4 with home losses to Georgia State and BYU?

[jwplayer ujtepgTU]

What if you were told last year at this time that LSU would come up with – arguably – the greatest season in college football history, and Joe Burrow would win the Heisman and be the no-brainer No. 1 overall pick in the draft?

They’re the wild and wacky curveballs that make each season fun. Enough safe and sane, it’s time for dumb and dangerous with five (potentially) stupid predictions thrown at the wall to see if they stick.

To keep this fun, this entire Stick To Sports piece is in a safe, COVID-19-free bubble – for the most part.

5. Texas A&M at Auburn is going to be massive

We’re getting (potentially) stupid here, but no, the insanity hasn’t crept in yet to make the call that Texas A&M at Auburn on December 5th will be for the West’s spot in the SEC Championship.

Buuuuuuut …

No. No, no, no. Even with Texas A&M getting to host LSU and Florida, it’s still asking way too much to expect it to be 8-1 – assume a loss at Alabama – before rolling into Jordan-Hare.

Auburn has to go to both Georgia and Alabama. Even if it splits those, beating LSU at home is still a tall task. However, win two of those three games, annnnnnnnd …

NO. No, no, no. I can’t make that leap. It’s still going to be the Alabama at LSU game on November 14th that turns out to be the biggest deal in the SEC West, and there are plenty of other landmines for both teams along the way.

However, the scheduled regular season finale will still be huge, but for other reasons.

2020 SEC Preseason Rankings

This year, merely having a winning record will be a tall task for most schools. Just six – Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee – were able to come up with a winning campaign in SEC play last year, and now it’s all SEC games all of the time. So Auburn and Texas A&M being above .500 really will mean something.

However, when it comes to grouchy fan bases, the loser of this game will have to deal with a whole lot of guff.

Unless some sort of scandal pops up – let’s just see where this Derrius Guice thing goes at LSU – or someone leaves for another gig or retires, Will Muschamp at South Carolina and Derek Mason at Vanderbilt are the two SEC coaches in the most danger of losing their jobs with a bad season.

There’s no possible chance Jimbo Fisher gets fired at Texas A&M – two words: buyout clause – but another underwhelming campaign would put the pressure on in Year Four to at least make some sort of a move to be a factor in the SEC West.

In his third season after going 17-9 in the first two years, this is when the program is supposed to rise up and rock. It might happen, but lose at Auburn and it’ll likely be a pedestrian 6-4/7-3 campaign.

Gus Malzahn took his team to a BCS Championship game, has beaten Alabama as often as could reasonably be asked for – going 3-4 – and he has two SEC Championship appearances in his seven years.

And it never seems to be enough.

He hasn’t lost fewer than four games since his first season, and his job security – media creation or not – always seems to be on a one-bad-game-away alert.

The loser of A&M-Auburn is going to have the pressure on in the offseason, and the winner might just end up playing for the SE…

NO. I can’t do it.

5. Open Dates

The Big Ten might not be doing the 2020 fall football thing anymore, but at least its schedule seemed to be a little more – let’s put it this way – realistic.

The Big Ten had built-in fail-safe weeks at the end, just in case there needed to be a postponement for any possible issue due to a coronavirus outbreak. The conference – and this turned out to be a part of its problem – was also supposed to start three weeks earlier than the SEC. That allowed the schedule to be spread out more.

The SEC has one big open date in early November when six teams are off, and four are off on October 31st and four are resting on October 24th.

And that’s it.

However this is going to work, the SEC is going to pound right through with a ten-game schedule in 11 weeks, with almost no margin for any error.

The almost part of that comes from the SEC Championship. If it’s played on December 19th, then December 12th could be used as a make-up week in case something goes wrong. But if the SEC Championship is on the 12th, there might be a total mess if one of the league’s stars ends up missing a week or two along the way.

This could get particularly ugly for …

The SEC is still on with a fall football season in 2020. Here’s the first reaction and quick predictions for Week 1 on September 26th.

We’ll dive in deep when we get closer to the date, but like they tell you in third grade, though, always go with your first answer.

The first knee-jerk reactions and predictions are …

[jwplayer r2WzJm3v]

Alabama at Missouri

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: Hey, Eliah Drinkwitz. Welcome to the SEC. The new Missouri head man gets Bama in Columbia in just the seventh meeting ever between the two – Bama is 3-0 in SEC play but just 4-2 overall.

Will the Tiger offense go anywhere? The running game should be fine overall, but this feels like an early statement moment for a Tide D that wasn’t exactly its normal self last year. Mizzou’s defense keeps this from getting out of hand, but the Bama offensive skill parts take over.

First Thought Prediction: Alabama 34, Missouri 13
First Thought Line Guess: Alabama -21.5
Actual Initial Line: COMING

Florida at Ole Miss

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: Just think for a moment about the potential storylines if Lane Kiffin comes out and pulls off a win over Florida in his debut as the Ole Miss head man.

The problem will be a Rebel secondary that’s going to give up way too many third down chances, all while getting less than zero help from a D line that doesn’t get to QB Kyle Trask enough to matter. It’ll be methodical, but the Gators come up with a balanced attack to get out with a good Week 1 road win.

First Thought Prediction: Florida 38, Ole Miss 16
First Thought Line Guess: Florida -14
Actual Initial Line: COMING
Bet on this with BetMGM

Georgia at Arkansas

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: New Georgia starting QB Jamie Newman – that’s a projection, by the way – looks the part right out of the gate as he carves up the Arkansas secondary on the way to an easy win. The downfield passing game will get Dawg fans fired up right out of the gate.

It’s not that Arkansas will be awful; it’s that Georgia is that good with a defense that will shut everything down hard in the second half after Newman generates a few big plays early.

First Thought Prediction: Georgia 41, Arkansas 10
First Thought Line Guess: Georgia -26
Actual Initial Line: COMING
Bet on this with BetMGM

Kentucky at Auburn

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: This might be the sneaky-good gem on the Week 1 SEC calendar. Auburn can’t afford to give away anything at home, and Kentucky is going to be just sound enough make this a fight.

The UK secondary will give Auburn QB Bo Nix a long day, and the game itself will be mucked up as everything grinds down into the Wildcat style, but  the home side – and Nix – will come up with one late drive to pull this out of the fire.

First Thought Prediction: Auburn 23, Kentucky 20
First Thought Line Guess: Auburn -7.5
Actual Initial Line: COMING

5. SEC 2020 Preview

Quick Note: Like everyone, we’re still waiting to see what’s going to happen in this unprecedented time of college football turmoil. We’re not completely delusional, but let’s have a little fun with what might happen if the season is safely played … somehow.

It took a nightmare to get here, but to set the dial to fun for a moment, football-wise, isn’t the SEC getting its dream world of an all-SEC world?

All SEC football games. All the time.

Don’t get too into this because it’s probably never happening again unless the conference has to keep everything in-house, but there’s no fluff, no waste, and every game will take on an even greater intensity than normal. And why?

There’s no Eastern Illinois, East Tennessee State, Alcorn State or UT Martin to fatten up the win totals.

Quick, off of the top of your head. How many SEC teams had a winning conference record in 2019?

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

Six.

Seven SEC programs had losing conference records and Texas A&M went 4-4. So no, the league isn’t getting rid of non-conference games for good – the mid-range teams need the fluff in this killer league to get to 6-6 overall – and soon the longtime rivalry dates with the ACC at several places will come back.

But for one year with no Big Ten or Pac-12 in the mix, this becomes even more interesting than just watching SEC teams beat up on each other. For many, it’s going to be a fight for survival to not go 4-6.

And then there’s the top of the SEC chain. If you want two or even three SEC teams in the College Football Playoff, this is the season.

The formula will probably still hold – win your Power Five conference title with one loss or fewer, and you’re in – but there are only three P5 leagues playing. There might be a bone thrown to an unbeaten Group of Five champion, but don’t count on it.

Alabama, LSU, Georgia and Florida are all top-five worthy teams – especially with no Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon in the rankings – coming into the season, and Auburn and Texas A&M are good enough to battle hard in the SEC West race.

The idea of bowl games is still murky, but Kentucky is strong enough to get to at least 5-5, and Tennessee and South Carolina had better get there.

We get two of the more – to understate it – interesting coaches in college football entering the fun in Mike Leach at Mississippi State and Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss, and Eliah Drinkwitz is a rising star that Missouri got early in his career.

Four new head coaches, at least five true national title contenders, and fans at close to half of the league’s schools hoping for an SEC title, with or without the realistic expectations.

In other words, it’s business as usual for the SEC.
