Texas A&M (4-1) vs South Carolina (2-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The offense might not be a high-flying fun show, but A&M is doing A&M.

Control the tempo, own the narrative, make teams play at its pace, leading the SEC in time of possession and leading the nation in third down conversions, hitting a terrific 59% of its chances. The other side of the ball, though, should dictate the action.

South Carolina’s offensive line hasn’t been good enough. The Texas A&M defensive front has been good at getting off the field with a steady stream of sacks and tackles for loss.

It’s a good formula. Grind out drives, rely on a few sacks and tackles for loss on third downs, and take over the game against a decent-but-not-special offense.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Why South Carolina Will Win

It only seems like there’s a penalty Texas A&M doesn’t want to commit.

There are other teams in the SEC that sin more often, but no one gets hit with more penalty yards per game than A&M including a season-high 100 on nine penalties last week against Arkansas.

The passing game has just enough of a spark to keep pushing. The win over Auburn was the one time the air show didn’t work all that well, but the yards have been there overall going against an Aggie secondary that doesn’t take the ball away and has allowed well over 200 yards through the air in each of the last four games.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina has just the right mix to give Texas A&M a tough time. The Gamecock offense can grind out drives, it can do a good job of controlling the clock, and for its purposes, it can keep the score relatively low and the game within range.

But Texas A&M does it better.

The Aggies are playing like the tough, veteran team that it is, and it’ll execute what it does on both sides of the ball well enough to very, very quietly take another step in the College Football Playoff race.

Texas A&M (2-1) vs Mississippi State (1-2) Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

There doesn’t seem to be an interception that Mississippi State isn’t happy to throw.

The Mike Leach passing game works, but the offense has lost three fumbles and aa interceptions in the first three games, giving away six interceptions in the 24-2 clunker to Kentucky.

That’s one more turnover than Mississippi State gave up in all of 2018.

But can the Texas A&M defense handle the quick-hitting midrange timing offense? Short answer, sort of, but the real key to this game is on the other side of the ball.

For all of Mississippi State’s issues, it’s hanging on to the ball for forever – almost 34 minutes per game. Texas A&M is keeping it for almost 33 minutes a game because it’s hitting on third down play after third down play.

Miss State can’t win this thing without offensive control, and it probably won’t have it.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Mississippi State Will Win

This thing is going to work … eventually.

It was amazing that the Mike Leach offense had the timing and effectiveness it did against LSU to open up the season. With no spring ball and a modified offseason, it was supposed to take a while to get everything in place. Eventually, everyone will get it and it’ll all just click.

Lost in the all of the issue on offense is a Bulldog defense that’s been terrific at getting into the backfield and strong at hitting the quarterback, and the run defense – partly because everyone is throwing to try to keep up – has been outstanding.

The A&M pass defense has been lit up over the last two weeks by Alabama and Florida, allowing the two to complete 73% of their throws for close to 750 yards and eight touchdowns. As long as KJ Costello can do everything possible to not throw a ton of picks, everything changes.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not just that the Mississippi State passing game isn’t clicking, it’s not clicking down the field to make big plays.

Both lines will play well, but the Aggies and QB Kellen Mond will be far more careful with the ball. They’ll do enough to keep the Bulldogs from controlling the clock, but it’ll be a close fight throughout.

Mississippi State won’t be that bad again.

Texas A&M vs Florida: 5 Thoughts On The 41-38 Aggie Win Over The Gators

5 thoughts and an instant reaction on the Texas A&M win over Florida.

5 thoughts and an instant reaction on the Texas A&M win over Florida.

[jwplayer 4fbCft6d]

5. Jimbo Fisher got his win

Texas A&M was mediocre in a 17-12 win against Vanderbilt, and it was thoroughly outclassed in the 52-24 loss to Alabama.

Finally, he was able to beat a top five team as the Aggie head coach, but it has to be the beginning. This is what a guy with a national championship ring and a ten-year contract is supposed to do.

This needs to be the game-changer. This needs to be when Texas A&M knows it really can not only hang with the best teams in college football, but beat them.

This was tough. Florida was fantastic, the Aggies were down in the second half, and they adjusted, fought through the adversity, and they came back to pull it off. They forced the late turnover, they took advantage of the situation, and they did it.

It is possible to win really, really big games at Texas A&M.

4. Texas A&M figured out how to pound away

Kellen Mond was brilliant. This was his signature win, hitting 25-of-35 passes for 338 yards and three scores as he calmly led the way on the game-winning drive, but this all turned on the offensive line.

This was the moment when the Aggies knew they could pound away when needed.

The Texas A&M running game was fine in the first two games, but nothing special.

Isaiah Spiller had a few big runs, and super-soph Ainias Smith was used a bit, but the ground attack failed to to hit 200 yards against Vanderbilt and was stuffed by Alabama.

That all changed against the Gators, and it started with a brutal ten play, 75-yard touchdown drive after getting down 28-17 early in the second half on the way to rushing for 205 yards and averaging over five yards per carry.

The offensive line was finally able to eat. It dominated the Gator defensive front when it had to.

3. The Florida defense couldn’t close

Kyle Trask threw for 312 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He’s on a better pace than Joe Burrow was after three games last year.

Kyle Pitts was good again – at least early – and the running game was fine. There might have been a late turnover, but this one is on the defense.

The Gators were flirting with problems over the first two games, and against the Aggies, they got burned by a grilling day from QB Kellen Mond, that pounding ground game that took over in the second half, and they couldn’t come through when needed.

The Gators were beaten by big plays through the air, they were ground on when it was time to get physical, and there were problems everywhere in between.

Florida has the talent on D, and it allowed A&M to convert 12-of-15 third down tries along with a fourth down chance. It had to come up with one big stop late, and couldn’t do it.

However …

Why Florida Will Win

The Texas A&M secondary hasn’t been a rock so far.

Mac Jones went full Tua with a 435-yard passing day with four scores last week in Alabama’s win over the Aggies, hitting on big play after big play. That’s one thing, but letting Vanderbilt’s Ken Seals connect on 69% of his throws – he struggled way too much against LSU the following week – is a problem.

Welcome to Kyle Trask.

He doesn’t have as many passing yards as Joe Burrow did through the first two games of 2019, but he has one more touchdown pass, completing 72% of his throws for 684 yards and ten scores with just one pick in the first two games.

Kyle Pitts has already locked up the Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end with 12 catches for 227 yards and six touchdowns in the first two weeks. He and his quarterback are about to give the Aggies some huge problems.

However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Come on, Kellen Mond, let’s do this already.

The senior quarterback has to rise up and be special for the Aggies to be any sort of a factor in the SEC, and while he threw for 318 yards and three scores last week against Alabama, most of the production came too late.

The Florida secondary sharpened up a bit against South Carolina – there weren’t as many big plays allowed or downfield shots as Ole Miss came up with the week before – but it was still hardly the rock it’s supposed to be.

The Gator run defense hasn’t been anything special, either.

For an Aggie offense that hasn’t gotten off the ground yet, this is the week to crank up the production.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Trask and the Florida offense have been just that good. The line is giving Trask time to let the deep plays develop, and the receivers are making things happen when they get the ball on the move.

No, the defense hasn’t been good enough, but the pass rush is there to bother Mond. It’ll be a shootout early, but the Gators will be steadier later.
