5. SEC 10-Game Schedule. The Basics …

The SEC finally decided what it’s going to do. It’s going to follow the Big Ten and Pac-12 and keep everything in its own house with a ten-game conference-only schedule.

From the SEC, here are the key points …

– Everything is supposed to start on September 26th. That means some early SEC matchups will have to be moved around, but the later date will give everyone a chance to see how the NFL is handling things and it buys more time overall to come up with the best possible practices.

– No non-conference games. More on this in a moment, but it’s going to be all-SEC, all of the time. There are some out there already complaining about this, but that’s just silly. Ten SEC teams, ten games, no fluff.

– SEC Championship moved to December 19. This allows more time and more flexibility, and it also finally means we can dispense with the bullspit talking point that the College Football Playoff can’t be expanded with a first round being played in mid-December.

As of now, everyone gets a week off in the middle of the season and time off on December 12th.

14. Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the parts that return for new head coach Sam Pittman aren’t all that bad. It’s been a rough ride for Arkansas football over the last few years, but the offensive backfield of QB Feleipe Franks and RB Rakeem Boyd is a great place to start a new era.

Be Concerned About … the D line isn’t up to SEC snuff. The offensive skill parts and linebacking corps are solid, but it’s going to be tough to make a big push if the defensive front – and the run defense that was last in the conference and 124th in the nation – isn’t more active.

The Season Will Be Successful If … there’s a big upset on the way to a push for five wins. That might be asking for the world – especially if the schedule takes away some or all of the non-conference games – but 2016 was the last time the Hogs won more than four games.

13. Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the defense is about to be a thing. Vanderbilt will never be able to keep up with the better offenses in shootouts, but the defense might not let that happen with the fantastic linebackers and safeties to keep games close.

Be Concerned About … the offense that was dead last in the SEC – averaging 299 yards and 16.5 points per game – needs to find a whole lot more pop. The passing game that couldn’t do much to make things happen down the field has to be a whole lot stronger.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the Commodores flirt with bowl eligibility. That’s going to be tough considering the schedule, but the defense should be nasty enough to pull off an upset or three to come up with a decent run.

[vertical-gallery id=516499]

12. Ole Miss Rebels

Ole Miss CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the Lane Train is about to enter the station. New head man Lane Kiffin brings the star power, the attention, and the coaching chops – he did a whale of a job at Florida Atlantic – to make Ole Miss the annoying fly that buzzes around the big boys. He’s got the passing game to make things fun right away.

Be Concerned About … the secondary has to be a whole lot stronger. Even though the pass rush was impressive – it finished second in the SEC – the Rebels allowed the most passing yards in the conference. The offensive front has to be better, too, after giving up way too many plays behind the line.

The Season Will Be Successful If … Ole Miss goes bowling again. It’s been four years since the program has enjoyed a swag-bag game – going 10-3 with a Sugar Bowl win over Oklahoma State in 2015 – but even in a strong SEC West, the Rebels should be decent under the new coaching staff.

11. Missouri Tigers

Missouri CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the Eliah Drinkwitz era should kick off with a whole lot of energy. Former head man Barry Odom caught a raw deal, but Drinkwitz is at least a change for the Tigers after a few mediocre seasons. It’s a good all-around team without a whole lot of major concerns, but …

Be Concerned About … a pass rush that didn’t show up. Getting to the quarterback has been one of the calling cards of Mizzou football since if joined the SEC, and finishing last in the conference in sacks last season wasn’t okay. The line is good, but it has to make more big things happen.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the Tigers go bowling. They missed out on a bowl game – not their fault last year – in three of the last five seasons, and getting off to a big start would be huge for Drinkwitz. He only had one year as the Appalachian State head man, so there’s still a bit of a prove it factor.

CFN in 60 Video: LSU Preview
[jwplayer QNBTGeVR]

2020 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

WR Ja’Marr Chase, Jr. LSU
Justin Jefferson caught 111 passes, and there were a whole slew of other weapons for Joe Burrow to throw to, but Chase was the Biletnikoff winner as the nation’s best receiver with the greatest season by any wideout in SEC history.

He cranked up 84 catches for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns. To put that into perspective, he had as many receiving scores or more than all but 58 of the 130 FBS teams, and he had more receiving yards than nine teams.

The SEC is loaded once again with tremendous receiving talent, and Chase doesn’t have Burrow around anymore, but he’s still going to be one of the most dangerous all-around weapons in the country.

2020 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

CB Derek Stingley, Soph. LSU
LSU safety Grant Delpit won the Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. He wasn’t event best defensive back on his own team last year – actually, he might have been fourth in the mix – behind Stingley, the lockdown star who came into LSU as a big-time recruit, and showed why right away.

The 6-1, 195-pounder led the team with six interceptions, 15 broken up passes, and 38 tackles. There’s some reloading to do in the Tiger secondary, and the stats aren’t going to be as good for Stingley – no one will throw his way – but he’s an NFL starting corner who’ll still be around the college world for the next few seasons.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Texas A&M Aggies Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense wasn’t as consistent or as dynamic as it probably should’ve been. It was able to beat up on the weak, sputtered too much against the strong, and overall it was underwhelming, finishing 72nd in the nation overall  and 62nd in scoring.

On the plus side, the offense was able to keep most games at its own pace. It ran a deliberate style that helped dominate the time of possession battle, but it also seemed to take the team out of a groove. At times, it looked like it was hard to rev up the machine.

Any improvement starts by getting more out of the line. Four starters are expected back – it’s really all five starters with interior blocker Ryan McCollum back after being hurt for most of last year – but the pass protection wasn’t nearly good enough and the ground game was just okay.

CFN in 60 Video: Texas A&M Aggies Preview
[jwplayer n9hjDTDv]

Kellen Mond has to rise up and become a star. The veteran quarterback has been fine – he threw for almost 2,900 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine picks, and he ran for 500 yards and eight scores – but like the rest of the team, the consistency wasn’t there. Again with the O line – Mond didn’t get a whole lot of time against the better defensive fronts.

With almost no experience behind him, getting the backups some meaningful reps – most likely redshirt freshman Zach Calzada and sophomore James Foster – is a must.

Top target Jhamon Ausbon is back after catching 66 passes for 872 yards and five scores, and 6-5, 260-pound sophomore Jalen Wydermyer is a great-looking tight end, but Quartney Davis and Kendrick Rogers are gone after leaving early for the NFL – and going undrafted. It’s a deep corps, though, and it’s getting even better with superstar recruit Demond Demas about to become a big deal.

Raise your hand if you’re a Texas A&M running back who’s not transferring. Leading rusher Isaiah Spiller is back after coming up with 946 yards and five scores, and Mond will do his part, but the next three leading rushers are all taking off to the transfer portal.

Jashaun Corbin is a Florida State Seminole as part of the five running backs taking their talents elsewhere. Some okay running back prospects are coming in, but they’re not as highly rated overall as the receivers. Speedy freshman Devon Achane will get his shot in the rotation, but 193-pound sophomore Ainias Smith will likely be the No. 2 guy early on.

NFL Draft 2020: SEC

It’s borderline obnoxious, but hardly unexpected.

As much as fans of other college football conferences might want to argue and complain, yeah, the SEC is usually just better.

And why? This isn’t hard. The league has better players than everyone else.

The SEC has owned the recruiting rankings by 85 miles ever since the beginning of the internet, and it comes across year after year in the NFL Draft.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

Last year, nine SEC players were selected in the first round. Granted it was still 28% of the first 32 picks, but it was still a tad light for the league that handed over ten of its finest players in the 2018 first round, and 12 in 2017.

But is it even possible to for a conference to own half of a first round by accounting for 16 picks?

11 SEC players were selected in 2014 first round, 12 got the call in 2013, and let’s just cheat a little bit and give a little boost to the league in 2011, considering Missouri and Texas A&M were making the move from the Big 12 to the SEC. With the newcomers added, the current SEC programs accounted for the first seven picks of the 2011 NFL Draft and 13 of the first 32.

It took a big bend of the criteria and the SEC still wasn’t even close to getting up to 16 first round picks.

By the way, the BetMGM line for total SEC players drafted in the first round is set at a ridiculous 15.5.

Is it even possible? Helped by Alabama and LSU, yeah.

LSU QB Joe Burrow, Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, Bama receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs, fellow Tide star OT Jedrick Wills, Auburn DT Derrick Brown, Florida CB CJ Henderson, Georgia OT Andrew Thomas, LSU edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson. That gets you to nine.

South Carolina DT Javon Kinlaw will go in the first round, as will LSU LB Patrick Queen. That’s 11, and a long, long, long way to go to get to 16 and the over.

There are others like LSU WR Justin Jefferson and Alabama S Xavier McKinney, who both have a shot of going in the top 32. There’s a chance RB D’Andre Swift and OT Isaiah Wilson from Georgia are both going early, and DE Terrell Lewis and CB Trevon Diggs from Alabama also could get the Day One call.

It’s not entirely insane to make a call that more than half of your 2020 NFL Draft first round will be made up of SEC players.

Let’s try this a different way.

How Many SEC Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

How many players outside of the SEC are guaranteed to go in the first round?

Rapid-fire – Chase Young, Jeff Okudah, Isaiah Simmons, Justin Herbert, Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton, CeeDee Lamb, Kenneth Murray, Jordan Love, AJ Terrell. That’s ten, and then it’s all hit-or-miss from a pool of around 15 players who could slide into the top 32.

But SEC players are in that same bucket of first round tweeners.

How crazy do you want to get? Is this really going to be one of the most historic drafts ever in a chest-puffing moment for the It Just Means More league?

Yeah. There are more than enough SEC players to get to 16, and that’s where the value is – minimal as it is.

Prediction: Over
BetMGM line: 15.5, Over +115, Under -141
