Oklahoma Athletics set new records for fundraising in 2021-2022 fiscal year

After a fantastic spring for Oklahoma Athletics, the Sooners set several fundraising records in the 2022 fiscal year.

There’s been a huge buy-in from the Oklahoma Sooners fan base since Brent Venables came on board as OU’s head coach in the wake of Lincoln Riley’s departure. Venables’ vision and enthusiasm to take the program good to great, along with his understanding of how to see OU compete alongside the SEC when they join their new conference in the next couple of seasons, has created a sense of urgency for Oklahoma to improve their facilities and resources before making the jump.

The spring game displayed the renewed enthusiasm to an Oklahoma program that had been good under Riley but never able to take the next step into greatness. Fans set an OU spring game record with more than 75,000 fans in attendance to witness a Venables-coached team for the first time. But football isn’t the only sport that saw a tremendous amount of success over the last year.

OU Football recorded a win in the Alamo Bowl. Women’s gymnastics won another national title, while the men finished second in the nation. In her first year, Jennie Baranczyk led the women’s basketball team to the second round of the NCAA tournament. OU Softball won its sixth national title, and baseball went on a historic run to the College World Series before falling short to Ole Miss in the championship series.

OU Athletics’ $109 million raised during the 2022 fiscal year ending June 30 is the first time in program history that they raised more than $100 million and nearly doubles the previous record set in 2021 at $58 million.

According to the official release on SoonerSports.com, “An OU-record 53% of all members invested in key initiatives above and beyond any seating donation requirements. Notable FY22 pledges for facility projects and initiatives included:”

  • $25.2 million towards the Women of Championship Excellence Fund and facility projects for female student-athletes
  • Nearly $25 million for football and special initiatives
  • $19.2 million for Love’s Field (OU Softball).
  • $10.6 million for the Inspiring Champions Fund
  • $3.2 million for L. Dale Mitchell Park and Baseball Performance Center
  • $1.4 million for the Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion at the Headington Family Tennis Center
  • $1.25 million for McCasland Field House
  • $1 million for G.R.I.T. (Growing Resilient, Innovative Thinkers)
  • $900,000 for the Viersen Gymnastics Center

“Providing world-class resources for our student-athletes, coaches and staff is our top priority, and we simply cannot pursue and accomplish this standard of excellence without support from our stakeholders, donors and fans,” said OU Vice President and Athletics Director Castiglione in the University’s release. “OU Athletics and our generous and passionate stakeholders have worked year after year in lockstep to endow scholarships, increase services and resources for student-athletes, as well as help fund state-of-the-art facilities. We’re grateful to receive this record-setting support. This inspires us even more in our ongoing pursuit that only continues to evolve in the ever-changing landscape of college athletics.”

Team Ingold tops Team Dekker 20-12 in the first annual Battle 4 Wisconsin

Team Ingold wins the first annual Battle 4 Wisconsin charity softball game:

On Saturday night, former Badgers alumni Alec Ingold and Sam Dekker hosted the first annual Battle 4 Wisconsin charity softball game in Madison at Warner Park.

The game, held at The Duck Pond, featured many famous Wisconsin football and basketball alumni, both past and present – with proceeds going to the Ingold Family Foundation.

“It was time to raise some money and give that back to different foster care families, different organizations that help with financial literacy and professional development,” Ingold told Mike Lucas of UWBadgers.com.

The evening kicked off with a cumulative home run derby, pitting the football and basketball programs against one another.

Team Ingold would win the derby 53-47 behind standout performances from former Badgers Alec Ingold and Taylor Mehlhaff – making them the home team for the event.

OU Hockey announces new Head Coach

Peter Arvanitis will return as head coach for OU Hockey’s 2022-23 season.

After months of speculation from fans, the University of Oklahoma Ice Hockey Club has announced their new head coach for the 2022-23 season and has released a statement regarding the club’s circumstances moving forward.

After departing the club in 2018, Peter Arvanitis will return to OU Hockey as head coach.

The following release comes from OU Hockey:

Following an off-season of change, OU Hockey is returning to the rink this fall with a new look off the ice but a similar look on the ice.  As it opens its 20th season of excitement on the ice, the Sooners will be under the direction of a new Head Coach/ Director of Hockey Operations and will be playing their home games in a new rink.

Taking the reins back for Sooner Hockey is Coach Peter Arvanitis, a former Canadian and CHL player and coach of OU Hockey from 2011-2018.

Arvanitis, a former Center, played in multiple leagues across Canada, then in 1996 moved to the United States, finishing his playing career with the Nashville Nighthawks and eventually the Oklahoma City Blazers of the CHL.  Following his playing career, Arvanitis joined the coaching ranks initially as an assistant with OU Hockey and the OKC Blazers and moved into the Head Coaching slot at the start of the 2011 season.

As OU Hockey’s winningest head coach, Arvanitis amassed a record of 159 wins, 76 losses, and 27 shootout losses with a winning percentage of .658, guiding the Sooners to the ACHA National Tournament 6 of his 7 years at the helm.  During the 2013-14 season, the Sooners entered the National Tournament ranked #2, finishing in the final four after a heartbreaking overtime loss.  Under Arvanitis’ leadership, the Sooners were ranked in the top 10 ACHA Division 1 teams 6 of his 7 years.  Arvanitis also coached Paolo DeSousa who still plays professional hockey in Europe.

Led by Senior Captain, Cameron Bickford, the Sooners will return a strong slate of players from the 2021-22 season and should be strong contenders to qualify for the 2022-23 ACHA Division 1 National Tournament next spring in Boston.

As Sooner Hockey prepares for the upcoming season, they will also be preparing to move to their new home game rink, Arctic Edge Ice Center in Edmond.  Over the summer, a new NAHL juniors team moved to Oklahoma City and will occupy the Sooners’ former space at Blazers Ice Centre resulting in the Sooners moving their games to Arctic Edge.  The Sooners will continue to practice at Blazers.

“While splitting time between the two rinks is not ideal, it is the situation we have to adjust to and we are planning lots of exciting events at our games this season,” commented new General Manager, Brad Bassett.  “The staff at both Arctic Edge and Blazers have been very supportive of OU Hockey during this transition, and we are looking forward to working with both rinks this coming season,” Bassett added.

The Sooners will hold their annual Training Camp at Blazers the week of August 22-26 followed by their Annual Red/White Scrimmage slated for 4 pm on Saturday, August 27. OU’s schedule includes their traditional WCHL rivalries between Colorado, Colorado State, Missouri State, Arizona State, and Central Oklahoma as well as a Bedlam series against OSU.

For more information regarding the Sooner’s schedule, ticket information, and much more, fans should follow the OU Hockey website at ouhockey.net as well as the team’s Facebook and Instagram social media posts.

Ohio State women’s tennis out of NCAAs after loss to Vanderbilt

It was still a season to be proud of.

The Ohio State women’s tennis team’s season has come to a conclusion before anyone wanted. Ranked No. 10 nationally and coming off of a regular-season Big Ten championship, the Buckeyes had their eyes on making a deep run in the NCAA tournament. That came to an end this weekend though when OSU lost to Vanderbilt by a total score of 4-2 in second-round action in Columbus.

As most losses in college tennis do, it all started with a loss of the doubles point to go down 1-0. Irina Cantos Siemers evened the score 1-1 for Ohio State after winning the first singles match, but the Commodores won the next two to take a commanding 3-1 lead. Sydni Ratliff won to close the gap to 3-2 and the remaining two singles matches went to three sets, but Vanderbilt sealed the deal on the next finishing match on court six to punch its ticket to the round of 16.

“It just wasn’t a good day today,” said head coach Melissa Schaub. “We haven’t been playing our best down the stretch and that’s something we need to look at closely. It’s a long, tough season and we just weren’t where we needed to be. I’m obviously disappointed, but proud of our season up until this point. Looking ahead to next year, I feel we will have a good group in the locker room and a bright future.”

OSU finishes the season with a 21-6 record and will now turn its attention to singles and doubles NCAA championships from May 23-28 in Champaign, Illinois following the team tournament.

OU Hockey is alive and well, will play next season at Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Edmond

After some uncertainty about the future of the program, OU Hockey will play next season at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Edmond.

After some uncertainty about the future of the program, OU Hockey will play next season. The club will be playing their home games at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Edmond, Oklahoma, which also houses the University of Central Oklahoma’s hockey team.

News of the move came after the NAHL’s Wichita Falls Warriors announced they would be moving into the Blazers Ice Centre.

OU Hockey will still practice through the week at the BIC in Oklahoma City, and will play their home games at Arctic Edge on the weekends.

While there are a few possible transfers, the roster remains almost completely intact.

OU Hockey will start to have a bigger presence on campus moving forward with the full support of OU’s Student Affairs office as they try to get more exposure to the student body.

OU Hockey has big things planned for the 2022 season.

Games against the newly reestablished Oklahoma State Hockey Club are in the works to bring Bedlam to the ice. A Red River Matchup against the University of Texas Hockey Club is in the works as well.

The schedule for the coming season is nearly complete for the Sooners as they look to return to nationals like their new rink mates UCO did last season.

The UCO Bronchos have been very supportive of the Sooners during these times for the club.

There is still much work to be done for the future of the program, but the important thing is this: OU Hockey is alive and well.
