Celtics summer league fan favorite Trevion Williams signs Exhibit 10 deal with Warriors

Boston’s backup center in Las Vegas Summer League action will compete to make a regular roster spot with Golden State.

Fans of undrafted Purdue big man Trevion Williams who were hoping to see the center make the Boston Celtics’ G League affiliate in Portland (the Maine Celtics — formerly Red Claws) will be disappointed to learn that appears to be off of the table with The Athletic NBA Insider Shams Charania reporting that Williams will be signing an Exhibit 10 deal with the Golden State Warriors in an effort to compete for a roster spot with the Dubs.

Williams, who recorded a solid 7.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists over 14.2 minutes per game for the Celtics in Las Vegas Summer League action this month, attracted the attention of Celtics fans with his impressive court vision and passing and his ability to bring the ball up the court.

If he ever does end up in green and white, he’ll need to make the league first — and with the Warriors, he appears to have a (slightly) clearer path than on Boston’s stacked roster.

Celtics Lab 130: Goodbye, Las Vegas, RIP TPE; Hello NBA doldrums

As the NBA media cycle starts to wind down, join us on the Celtics Lab to wrap up the busy part of the offseason while we wait for training camp to kick off in late summer.

The 2022 NBA 2K23 Las Vegas Summer League has come and gone in the same way the Boston Celtics’ $17.1 million Evan Fournier Traded Player Exception (TPE) has, leaving the Celtics close to being done (we think, anyway) with their offseason team building plans and fans of the ball club with NBA-related content of current news.

As the period of the league calendar unaffectionately known as the “doldrums” — named after the part of the Atlantic sailing ships used to avoid lest they be trapped in a literal sea of inactivity or movement — settles in, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast take a look at what might be left to do with Boston’s roster, what might have been with the TPE, and grill host Cameron Tabatabaie about what the Sin City NBA experience is like behind the scenes.

Joined by your usual hosts Justin Quinn and Alex Goldberg, they also get you up to date on the trickle of news still coming in, and even throw some darts at what the NBA could do to spice up a midseason tournament Commissioner Adam Silver has been trying to spark interest in.

B/R analyst rates Boston Celtics camp invitee Trevion Williams 5th-best undrafted 2022 prospect

Is the big man’s unorthodox passing game a good fit for the Celtics?

There is a palpable buzz building around the NBA potential of undrafted big man Trevion Williams, who is likely hours away from making his Las Vegas Summer League debut with the Boston Celtics‘ Sin City squad. The Purdue product’s passing and court vision is already earning him praise from fellow Summer Celtics and Boston assistant coach Ben Sullivan, the team’s head coach for the annual Nevada exhibition series.

And that is not so surprising to established scholars of the NBA prospect game like Bleacher Report’s Ben Wasserman, who rates Williams as the No. 5 undrafted prospect from the 2022 draft — it seems Boston may very well have stumbled onto some found gold in the Purdue product.

“Scouts have had trouble picturing a fit with Trevion Williams, a 265-pound big who doesn’t shoot or offer much defensive value,” wrote Wasserman, acknowledging how he managed to slip out of the second round and into Boston’s camp rotation.

Lauded for his passing, Sin City Celtics big man Trevion Williams getting increasing buzz ahead of Las Vegas Summer League

The undrafted big man could play his way onto Boston’s roster if his play translates well in Las Vegas.

There is growing buzz that undrafted big man Trevion Williams could make the Boston Celtics‘ roster for the coming 2022-23 NBA season with the team needing a sturdy presence in the paint to help eat minutes for veterans Al Horford and Robert Williams III in the regular season.

The Purdue product has been turning heads with his ability to move the rock, with Celtics assistant and Las Vegas Summer League head coach Ben Sullivan recently relating that “the first thing that stood out is his passing.” Describing the Purdue product as “a willing passer” with the vision to “see the whole floor with his size and touch and feel,” Sullivan was impressed with Williams.

That sentiment was echoed by Sin City teammate Sam Hauser, who said that since he arrived in Boston, he’s “made his teammates better” with his passing.

“There were a couple of times he was looking the other way and threw it to a different guy that he wasn’t looking at, right in the shooting pocket for the 3,” Hauser added. “He’s going to have a real impact in these games coming up.”

JD Davison, Brodric Thomas reportedly to compete for full 2022-23 roster slot with Boston Celtics

Davison will be tendered a two way deal soon to start, per The Athletic’s Jared Weiss.

Las Vegas Summer League and training camp will look particularly large for the Boston Celtics‘ 2022 draft pick JD Davison and 2021-22 two way guard Brodric Thomas, with the duo likely competing for a regular-season spot on the team’s 2022-23 roster.

Per The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, Davison “will formalize a two-way deal with the Celtics soon” but “are expected to compete for a full roster spot” before the start of next season. Either way, whichever of the duo ended up with that spot would likely see most of their floor time with the Maine Celtics (Boston’s Portland-based G League affiliate) given where each is in their respective developmental path.

The trade that shipped out Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Nik Stauskas, Juwan Morgan, and Malik Fitts for Malcolm Brogdon opened up several roster spots in need of filling.

Boston will add at least two more players to their team with 11 currently under contract plus the noted full roster slot for Davison or Thomas to get to the league-mandated 14 regular contracts.

They could also go for a 15th player if the right value comes along, but if the team wants to remain flexible (and cheaper, considering their substantial extant tax bill), particularly if they believe in their two way players to add spot minutes in a pinch.

Did the Boston Celtics have the best offseason in the NBA?

While other teams are stuck waiting to hear what happens with Kevin Durant, the Celtics got to work.

When a player the caliber of Kevin Durant becomes available, virtually every team in the NBA will make the call to see what is what with the Brooklyn Nets star, but only a few can truly afford to pass on such a prospective addition with the talent on their roster already a perhaps better bet for long-term success.

And it seems to be that the Boston Celtics believe the core that brought them to within two wins of the 2022 title is not worth breaking up to tender a serious offer for the Nets superstar forward. Instead, they pulled off one of the best trades of the offseason, added one of the better free agents on the cheap, and are now quite possibly the deepest team in the league as a result.

Did the Celtics sneakily have the best offseason in the league? The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast got together with FiveThirtyEight’s Jared Dubin to talk all things Boston offseason, and where they stand in relation to the rest of the league.

Boston Celtics reportedly add Adelaide 36ers’ Robert Franks to Las Vegas Summer League roster

The NBL forward previously worked out for Boston and is reported to be a late addition to the Sin City Celtics.

The Boston Celtics reportedly have added forward Robert Franks to their Las Vegas Summer League roster, according to the official Twitter account of Australia and New Zealand’s National Basketball League (NBL). Per the NBL, the Adelaide 36ers swingman will join the Summer Celtics in the annual Sin City exhibition series kicking off this Saturday.

The Washington State product had previously worked out for Boston ahead of the 2019 NBA draft before he would ultimately go unselected, so it makes sense for the two to reunite as the 36ers star looks to try to make the leap to the NBA next season.

Franks logged 18.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game with the Brisbane Bullets last season while shooting 39.1% from deep.

It remains to be seen how well Franks can put it together against a higher level of competition, but he should help Boston’s summer league squad out well with his outside shooting and rebounding at the least.

Celtics Lab 128: Assessing the Boston Celtics offseason in difficult times with Jared Dubin

The Celtics are nearly done building a contender while we sort through some trying times beyond basketball, and in this episode of the Celtics Lab podcast, FiveThirtyEight’s Jared Dubin helps us do both.

If the Boston Celtics are not done with their team-building activities in the 2022 NBA offseason, they are very likely close to it. A contract for the soon-to-be bought-out veteran forward Danilo Gallinari was quickly followed by a trade of a top-12 protected first-round draft pick, a pair of deep rotation players, and a trio of garbage time specialists for Malcolm Brogdon.

Not long after, Boston inked forward Sam Hauser and veteran big man Luke Kornet, and save perhaps for bringing on another reserve big man to eat some regular-season minutes for Al Horford and Robert Williams III, the Celtics could very well be finished with their 2022-23 roster.

To that end, we linked up with FiveThirtyEight’s Jared Dubin to talk all things Celtics offseason assessments, and wrap up our conversation with some words about covering the league in the midst of some very contentious times far beyond the game of basketball.
