Should Steelers claim former second-round WR off waivers?

Should the Steelers claim Tyquan Thornton off waivers to bolster their wide receiver room and add more speed to their offensive attack?

What a difference a few weeks make! Heading into the trade deadline, the New England Patriots’ lightning-fast WR Tyquan Thornton was one of many receivers linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers as a potential trade target.

However, Pittsburgh ultimately pulled the trigger on a trade that brought New York Jets WR Mike Williams to the Steel City. Now, it appears the Patriots have moved on from Thornton as well.

On Saturday, insider Adam Schefter reported that the New England Patriots would be releasing their former 2022 second-round receiver. Thornton ran an impressive 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Combine but struggled to make an impact during his three seasons with the Patriots, recording 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns in 28 games.

Steelers GM Omar Khan could once again showcase his decision-making prowess by adding Thornton’s speed to an already dangerous Pittsburgh offense.

Steelers’ wide receivers George Pickens, Mike Williams, Calvin Austin III, and the potential addition of Thornton would give QB Russell Wilson the tools to cook any opposing secondary.

Report: Steelers releasing former first-round pick

The Steelers released Terrell Edmunds, marking his second departure from Pittsburgh after stints with multiple teams since 2023.

In what can only be described as shocking, to say the least, the Pittsburgh Steelers have released former first-round draft pick Terrell Edmunds, selected in the 2018 NFL Draft.

This marks the second time Edmunds has departed from the Steel City, as he left on his own terms in 2023 to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles during free agency.

Edmunds ultimately bounced around from Philadelphia to Tennessee and then to Jacksonville before returning to Pittsburgh in September 2024.

The former first-rounder made appearances in Weeks 4 through 8 for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2024 season, playing 63 defensive snaps. According to the infamous and always polarizing Pro Football Focus, Edmunds performed solidly in these four games, earning a respectable 71.7 grade.

It is disappointing that Edmunds’ second stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t pan out, but the former first-round safety is only 27 years old and still has some of his best football ahead of him.

Steelers’ CB officially reinstated after 8-game suspension

Steelers’ CB Cameron Sutton has officially been reinstated after serving an 8-game suspension for violating the personal conduct policy.

Some much needed assistance to an already impressive Steelers’ secondary has arrived.  CB Cameron Sutton, who rejoined the Pittsburgh Steelers back in June 5th, 2024, has been officially reinstated after serving an eight-game suspension to start the season.

Sutton’s suspension was a result of violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. His play for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2016 to 2022 was immaculate, to say the least.  He would ultimately price himself out of the Steel City, signing with the Detroit Lions in the 2023 offseason. The Lions had initially released Sutton as a result of his violation, and Steelers gave their former CB a second-chance to play in the league again.

How will Sutton’s return impact the already great Steelers’ 2024 defense?  Given how amazing rookie slot corner Beanie Bishop Jr. has been to start the season, how will HC Mike Tomlin handle starting responsibilities?  Sutton’s natural position lies in the slot, and this could present another positional battle for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Financial implications of a Davante Adams trade shouldn’t exclude the Steelers

The Steelers should be calling on Davante Adams.

For months, the Pittsburgh Steelers were players in the market for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, Despite the potential cost in a trade as well as a huge new contract, Pittsburgh was in the mix until the very end but missed out on adding Aiyuk.

Now there is a new option in Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams. Adams wants out of Vegas ASAP and with a month to the trade deadline, he looks to be on the move.

Obviously, the Steelers will be mentioned and we are confident that Pittsburgh will at least make a call about Adams’ availability. Critics of the notion point to Adams’ contract but honestly, we don’t see the problem.

Adams, 31, is in the third year of his 5-year/$140M contract and is due a base salary of $35.640 million in 2025 and 2026. Those last two years are both non-guaranteed years so Adams could be an interesting one-year rental with the wiggle room for Pittsburgh after the season.

Top 5 Steelers free agents to sign in the offseason

Here are our priority in-house Steelers free agents.

We don’t expect the Pittsburgh Steelers to focus heavily on in-house free agents this offseason. The team is in need of a reset and this means the front office could turn over a significant portion of the roster. But here are the five in-house free agents the Steelers should prioritize.

Looking at the big causes for the Steelers awful start

Why are the Steelers so bad? That isn’t an easy question to answer with so many potential causes.

Right now, the Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase has turned on the team. Two close wins and two blowout losses have raised many doubts as to the real potential of this team. But what is the cause? The answer to that question depends on who you ask. The reality is there isn’t one singular reason this group is playing so poorly. Let’s take a look at the four big arguments for why this team is so bad and you might realize the answer is probably all of the above.

Who will be the Steelers hot hand in Week 8?

Who will be the top dawg this week for the Steelers: Claypool, Conner, JuJu, Washington, Diontae?

Round and round it goes. Where it stops, nobody knows.

That’s the schematic beauty of the Steelers 2020 offense. With so many offensive weapons and assorted plays from week-to-week, defenses are rattled.

As the saying goes, “Always go with the hot hand.” Tomlin has said it a million times. But Pittsburgh hasn’t had the variety of weapons it does in 2020 and so it’s changed from week-to-week. The first week, it was JuJu. The second week, it was Diontae Johnson. Versus Houston, it was James Conner. In Weeks 5 and 6, it was Chase. Johnson stepped up again in Week 7 after the Titans shut down Claypool.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is right, it’s hot in the AFC North kitchen — temperatures are going to be flaring today.

Who do you think will be the hot hand today?

Steelers sign WR Cody White to practice squad

The Steelers bolstered their practice squad depth at wide receiver on Thursday.

Per the Pittsburgh Steelers, wide receiver Cody White was signed to their practice squad on Thursday. The team brought him in for a visit on Tuesday and must’ve liked what transpired.

We all know that Big Ben loves him some big receivers, and White fits the bill. The Kansas City Chiefs initially signed the 6-3 Michigan State product as an undrafted free agent after the 2020 NFL draft. White also spent time on the offseason rosters of the New York Giants and was most recently with the Denver Broncos.

White has football in his blood. His father, Sheldon White, was a cornerback for the New York Giants, Detroit Lions, and Cincinnati Bengals from 1988 to 1993. As a Lion, the elder White had an interception returned for a touchdown in 1991, which was — believe it or not — the last season Detroit won a postseason game.
