WATCH: Rob Gronkowski launches Super Bowl music festival named ‘Gronk Beach’

The event will take place on Miami Beach on Saturday, Feb. 1, the day before Super Bowl LIV at the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium.

Rob Gronkowski will be in Miami for the Super Bowl in February, but not anywhere near the field.

The retired New England Patriot announced his latest venture on Tuesday, a one-day music festival called “Gronk Beach.” Per the event’s website, the festival will feature some of his favorite musical acts like Diplo, Kaskade, Flo Rida, and Rick Ross.

The event will take place on Miami Beach on Saturday, Feb. 1, the day before Super Bowl LIV at the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium.

Hear the details from the Yo Soy Fiesta man himself in this announcement video:

Gronk really seems to be making the most of his retirement. Good for him.

How the Ravens fixed their defense and became the NFL’s best team

John Harbaugh wants you to think nothing changed, but the Ravens actually made signficant alterations — and they worked.

Expectations were high for the Baltimore Ravens heading into the 2019 season. We expected the offense to look … different in Year 2 of the Lamar Jackson era, but “different” doesn’t always mean better and you would have been totally justified in wondering if this new-fangled offense, which John Harbaugh said would “revolutionize” the NFL, was good enough to help the team get back to the Super Bowl.

Eleven weeks into the season, we can safely say Harbaugh’s hype was warranted. The Jackson-led offense, which is in fact unlike anything we’ve seen in the NFL, ranks third in offensive DVOA and, along with its quarterback, seems to be getting better every week. The Texans were the latest in Jackson’s destruction tour of the NFL. The MVP candidate tossed four touchdowns, averaged 9.3 yards per attempt and added another 87 yards on the ground in a 41-7 romp over the Texans.

While those 41 points jump off the screen, don’t overlook the seven spot. That was no fluke. Baltimore’s defense was just as impressive as its offense, and that’s been the case for the last month or so. In fact, since the trade for Marcus Peters before Week 7, the Ravens have had the NFL’s best defense, per Football Outsiders’ DVOA.

The Ravens having one of the NFL’s best defenses is not necessarily a surprise. That was the preseason expectation. But after a rough start to the season and a few key injuries, those expectations were tempered as excitement for the offense grew. After four weeks, the Ravens had plummeted to 29th in defensive DVOA and were coming off a 40-25 loss to a struggling Browns team. This was one week after a lifeless defensive display in Kansas City. I’ll let defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale explain how bad that performance was…

“I lost four pounds this week,” Martindale said, via Penn Live, “because I watched it three times and threw up all three times.”

Those two losses — Baltimore’s only losses of the season — were a low point for the defense but they can also be considered a turning point. The losses forced Martinadale to make changes in order to address the unit’s two biggest issues: (1) A glaring lack of pass rush, and (2) poor communication in the secondary.

After the seven-sack performance against the Texans, we can say those issues have been ironed out. Baltimore didn’t give up any huge plays and the pass rush put Deshaun Watson under duress all afternoon. Harbaugh was asked about the improved pass rush and what had changed since the slow start to the season. He wasn’t entirely forthcoming…

Sorry, Harbs, but that’s not really true. Changes were made after that Cleveland made. Changes had to be made after that game because the Ravens pressured Baker Mayfield on only three of his 32 dropbacks.

Baltimore wasn’t getting home with a traditional four-man rush and that was exacerbating issues in the secondary. So Martindale did the sensible thing and start calling more blitzes. A lot more blitzes, in fact. In that Week 4 loss to Cleveland, the Ravens had blitzed only 10 times. The following week, that number jumped to 16. In the game after that, Baltimore blitzed 30 times! Since Week 4, the team’s blitz rate has not been below 40.5% in any game.

Martindale is unafraid as a play-caller. He will send a blitz in any situation and he isn’t afraid to crowd the line of scrimmage against spread sets, either. He’s also not dumb. A lot of the pre-snap looks he throws at a quarterback are more daunting than what follows after the snap. The aim is to maintain a numbers advantage in coverage while getting the offensive line to slide one way so the Ravens can send a blitz from the opposite direction.

This is how every blitz would play out in Martindale’s ideal world…

The Ravens have seven potential blitzers near the line of scrimmage. Brady makes a miscalculation, thinking the two defensive backs, Chuck Clark and Earl Thomas, will drop into coverage. He calls for a half-slide protection to his right (yellow in the diagram below), which leaves the left guard and tackle, plus the back, to protect his blindside.

But Martindale has Matt Judon (99) and Tyus Bowser (54) dropping into coverage leaving three Pats linemen responsible for one pass rusher to the left side. On the other side, the Ravens are sending four against only three blockers, creating a free rusher. So, Martindale has created a two-on-one in coverage to the top of the screen, a four-on-three to the bottom of it and a four-on-three in the rush.

It’s as if there are 13 defenders out there.

In order to accommodate the more aggressive approach upfront, Martindale has had to make changes on the backend. That started with the season-ending injury to strong safety Tony Jefferson. Since Jefferson went down, Earl Thomas has been playing closer to the line of scrimmage. At the beginning of the season, he was lining up where he’d typically line up in Seattle’s defense — about 15 yards from the line of scrimmage.

Now he’s playing at a 10-yard depth, where he’s closer to the ball and better able to disrupt intermediate route concepts, as he does here before looking to stop a scrambling Watson.

That positional shift has helped Thomas immensely. He was perfectly suited for the role of centerfield safety in Seattle’s defense but that deep positioning did limit his play-making opportunities. That’s no longer the case, and Thomas is now a more disruptive force, and I’d even go as far as to say he’s a more valuable player now than he ever was in Seattle because of it.

Even when Thomas isn’t line up in centerfield, he still has the range to defend that area of the field, as Brady found out in the Ravens’ 37-20 win over the previously undefeated Patriots.

With Thomas playing closer to the line of scrimmage, the Ravens have called more two-deep safety coverages in to give him more help deep. Per Sports Info Solutions, Baltimore’s usage of those coverage has nearly tripled since Week 4, jumping from about 10% in September to 28% over the rest of the season. That strategic shift has coincided with a vastly improved pass defense. After Kyler Murray, Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield averaged 0.33 Expected Points Added per attempt against the Ravens in Weeks 2 through 4, opponents are averaging -0.31 per attempt since, and that includes games against Brady, Watson and Russell Wilson.

Good X’s and O’s are important but not nearly as important as having the right players to execute them. After losing Tavon Young and Jimmy Smith to injury, the Ravens did not have those players early on in the season. Outside of Marlon Humphrey, the young cornerback group was not playing well and, worse, was not communicating well either, which led to an infuriating number of coverage busts. This one against the Chiefs was particularly ugly and came after a banged-up Humphrey had to leave the game.

A few weeks later, the Ravens swung a trade for Marcus Peters. Then Smith returned in time for the Patriots game. All of a sudden, the cornerback position became a strength for the Ravens and Martindale was tasked with getting all four of his corners — Humphrey, Peters, Smith and Brandon Carr — on the field at once. His solution was a bit unorthodox and, ironically, similar to the strategy the Chargers used to beat the Ravens in last year’s playoffs. Martindale moved Carr to safety and asked safety Chuck Clark to play dime linebacker. Peters and Smith would play outside corner (for the most part) and Humphrey would take the biggest threat in the slot. Add in Thomas, and that’s six good coverage players the Ravens can throw at you in this dime package.

Since the Peters acquisition, the Ravens’ dime defense has defended 74 passing attempts. Opponents are averaging -0.38 expected points added per attempt. Some context: The Jets passing game is averaging -0.26 EPA per attempt, which ranks 32nd in the NFL.

As the numbers show, it hasn’t taken long for this rejiggered secondary to gel, which has also helped the pass rush. This snap from the Houston game shows how cohesive this unit has become from front to back.

You can see players working in tandem all over the field. First, let me direct your attention to the bottom of the screen, where Clark and Humphrey seamlessly switch responsibilities when DeAndre Hopkins runs a slant and the back heads directly for the flat. You can even see Clark pointing it out…

In the middle of the field, you have Bowser and LB Josh Bynes — another midseason pickup — bracketing the tight end…

To the top of the screen, Peters has the outside receiver until he sees the slot receiver run a quick out. Peters is responsible for that so he passes the vertical route off to Carr deep…

Thomas also plays this smartly. When Watson’s movement pulls Clark off Hopkins, he recognizes it and tails the Texans star. But he doesn’t over pursue him and stays on top of the route because he knows he has Peters lurking on the sideline, ready to undercut the over route should Watson target it…

There’s nowhere for Watson to go and he’s forced to eat a sack. A defensive coordinator could not ask for more. I’m sure this is the vision Martindale had for his defense when the season began. It just took a couple months, a handful of schematic adjustments and some smart midseason acquisitions to make it happen.

Lamar Jackson and Ravens offense have received a lot of the love this season, and rightfully so, but all of a sudden, Baltimore also has one of the league’s best defenses. It might be the best defense outside of New England. But with the Patriots offense sputtering and Baltimore’s offense doing whatever the opposite of sputtering is, it’s getting harder to deny: The Ravens are the best team in the NFL.

WATCH: USWNT stars call out male counterparts to get behind push for equal pay

U.S. Women’s National Team stars Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger are calling for their male counterparts to get behind their push for equal pay.

U.S. Women’s National Team stars Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger are calling for their male counterparts to get behind their push for equal pay.

The USWNT received class status on Nov. 8 in its gender discrimination lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation, which opens the door for any athlete who was a part of the women’s team national team camp or a game since Feb. 14, 2014, can now join the class-action suit.

But Harris and Krieger believe that in order for the equal pay fight to succeed, the members of the U.S. Men’s National Team need to be a part of the battle. In March, several of the men’s players spoke with Yahoo! Sports saying they support the women, and the USMNT players association released a statement in July which aimed to dispel a factsheet released by the U.S. Soccer Federation that claimed that the women have actually been paid more than the men.

“I think at the end of the day, we need men to step up, and we need these men to see our value and to see our worth and take a stance and say, ‘You know what? This is not okay. We need to make a change and our children need to make a change.’ And I think that is right now the (…) thing that’s missing,” Harris said, speaking to PowerPlays.news, which is a newsletter about sexism in sports which reporter Lindsay Gibbs launched in late October.

Mediation talks between US Soccer and the women broke down in August and a new trial date is set for May 2020, but Harris insists that she and the cause for equal pay needs, “boys and teenagers and adult men to really value and appreciate these women who are giving so much.”

The Patriots’ locker room went nuts when Bill Belichick rewarded them with a day off

A very happy Bill Belichick rewarded his guys with a day off after a big win over the Eagles.

The New England Patriots bounced back from their only loss of the season with a big win over the Eagles in Philadelphia on Sunday, though it wasn’t exactly a pretty win.

While Tom Brady and the offense didn’t look great, the Patriots’ defense had another stellar performance after a little bit of a rocky start.

Bill Belchick, however, was in a good after the game and he surprised the team by telling them they deserved their first “Victory Monday” of the season – which means players can take the day off and the week won’t start until Wednesday. Belichick also had fun later trolling the Eagles, too.

The players in the locker room were really happy to hear their coach announce the day off, as you can see at the :33 mark of this video from the locker room:

So yeah, doesn’t seem like the Patriots are panicking too much about their offensive struggles. 9-1 is a pretty good start to the season.

I just think we could all use a Victory Monday, though.

Lots of NFL fans thought Carson Wentz got an arm sleeve tattoo. He did not.

Not a tattoo.

Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles were coming off a bye week before Sunday’s showdown with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots and many football fans watching the game on TV thought the Eagles QB spent some of that time off getting a sleeve tattoo on his right arm.

He did not.

The QB, who has been having trouble with the Patriots’ stingy/physical defense, was simply wearing a camouflage arm sleeve on his throwing arm. Did it look like a big tattoo? Maybe at first glance but it quickly became easy to spot that it wasn’t some new ink.

See for yourself:

Yup, not a tattoo.

Fans still seemed confused, though:

New York picked up its second win of the season last weekend by beating the Giants 34-27. Sam Darnold completed 19 of 30 passes for 230 yards and one touchdown. Darnold also added 25 yards on the ground. Le’Veon Bell continued to struggle at running back with 18 carries for 34 yards and one touchdown. Demaryius Thomas led all Jets’ receivers with a career-high 84 yards, while Jamison Crowder reeled in five catches for 81 yards and a score.

While the Jets offense ranks in the bottom three in points, total yards, passing yards and rushing yards, their defense has been their strength all season. They gave up 308 yards and four passing touchdowns to Daniel Jones, but did manage to pressure him and compile six sacks. The Giants were forced to pass because they absolutely eliminated the run game. Saquon Barkley was held to just one yard on 13 carries. As a team, they have allowed opponents an average of 81.9 YPG, second-best in the NFL. Jamal Adams led the team with nine tackles and two sacks.

The Washington Redskins lone win of the season came against the Miami Dolphins in a 17-16 victory. They are 1-8 this season, including a 24-9 loss in Buffalo two weeks ago. Rookie first-round pick Dwayne Haskins threw for 144 yards and failed to record a touchdown. The team recently announced that Haskins would be the starter for the remainder of the season. Adrian Peterson has been productive in recent weeks at running back. The veteran totaled 18 carries for 108 yards, his second 100 yard game of the season. Despite an average of 96 yards in his last four games, Peterson has failed to reach the end zone. We’ll see if a bye week will spark a lackluster Redskins offense that’s only converted 22 of 91 third down plays.

It’s hard on a defense when your offense hasn’t scored for 13 straight quarters. The Redskins were able to hold Buffalo to under 300 yards of total offense (282) and had some key stops of running back Frank Gore near the end zone. Landon Collins led the team with nine tackles, while Josh Norman chipped in with seven. With two of the worst offenses in the league going head to head, defense to be the difference maker in this game.

The Jets (2-7) and Redskins (1-8) reunite in a matchup between two of the worst teams in the NFL this season. Whoever loses this game will be one step closer to the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. The Jets have won the last two games, including a 30-24 home win in 2015.

Quarterback woes and offensive struggles have plagued the Broncos all season. Joe Flacco was sidelined due to a neck injury, but Brandon Allen stepped in to record his first victory as a starter, 24-19, over the Browns two weeks ago. In that game, Allen was 12 of 20 for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Phillip Lindsay carried the ball nine times for 92 yards and one touchdown. Can he move the chains against a physical Vikings defensive front this weekend? Will Allen have enough time under center to link up with No. 1 wide receiver Courtland Sutton or rookie tight end Noah Fant, who hauled in three catches for a career-high 115 yards? This offense will need to put points on the board if it wants to keep up with Minnesota.

The Broncos defense has been one of the best in the league. The team limited Baker Mayfield to 273 yards and one touchdown and are fourth in total defense and passing yards allowed. They will need to put pressure on Kirk Cousins throughout the game and force the Vikings to beat them through the air. Dalvin Cook is the NFL’s leading rusher and their offense starts with him.  Denver’s defense held Nick Chubb to 65 yards two weeks ago, but rank 17th in the league with opponents averaging 117.6 YPG.

Minnesota has won five of their last six games, including a 28-24 win on the road against Dallas last weekend in primetime. Kirk Cousins shined with 220 yards and two touchdowns. Dalvin Cook continued to prove why he is the best running back in the NFL with 26 carries for 97 yards and one touchdown to bring his league lead to 991 yards. Even more impressive were his seven catches for 86 yards that were integral parts in key scoring drives for Minnesota. Alexander Mattison has served as a 1-2 punch with Cook and the third-best rushing unit in the NFL.

The Vikings’ defense is holding opponents to an average of 18.2 points per game, fifth-best in the NFL. Against Dallas, their rushing defense was fantastic as well. Minnesota limited Ezekiel Elliott to 47 yards on 20 carries. The Cowboys switched to the air and Dak Prescott threw for nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns, but the Vikings still managed to come away with the win. Mike Hughes and Anthony Barr led the team with seven tackles. Can this defense put pressure on an inexperienced Brandon Allen and an offensive line that has given up its fair share of sacks this season? Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen have a combined 14.5 sacks on the year.

The 15th meeting between the Denver Broncos (3-6) and Minnesota Vikings (6-3) takes place Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium. The all-time series is tied at seven, but Denver has won the last three games, all by just three points.

Here are the NFL teams that actually attended Colin Kaepernick’s workout

A handful of NFL scouts are in attendance at the workout.

Colin Kaepernick worked out in Atlanta at a local high school football field Saturday evening.

The workout was originally supposed to happen at the Falcons facility at 3 p.m. ET but ended up being switched at the last minute to an hour later at an undisclosed location.

The shift was made because they believed the NFL asked Kaepernick to sign a waiver and refused to allow media to attend or film the tryout. Kaepernick organized his own workout just in case the league’s workout turned out to be a sham.

There was a concern the NFL personnel that were originally scheduled to attend Kaepernick’s workout at the Falcons’ facility wouldn’t show up because of the move. Hue Jackson, the coach that was supposed to conduct the workout, made his way to the airport shortly after the move.

However, despite the location change, there were still at least a handful of NFL teams in attendance. Here is a running list of the ones we know of.

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia’s 97.5 The Fanatic is reporting that the Eagles attended.

Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans

USA TODAY Sports’ Dan Wolken is reporting that both teams had representatives at the workout.

New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs

Per Jordan Roudrigue, the Jets and Chiefs had representatives there.

As we find out more, we’ll continue to update this post.

San Francisco 49ers

Jim Trotter confirmed those listed above, as well as the 49ers.

D’Angelo Russell is out for at least 2 weeks and the Warriors are probably cursed

Russell is the latest Warrior to go down with a major injury.

The Warriors officially announced D’Angelo Russell is out for at least two weeks after he suffered a right thumb sprain in last night’s game against the Celtics.

Russell is going to be reevaluated by the team in two weeks and might return after that point, but there’s no official timetable just yet. It’s another massive blow to a team that is now set up for an early lottery pick next season after making five straight runs to the NBA Finals.

Injuries happen. They’re a part of sports. Athletes are bigger, stronger and faster than ever and they push the body to limits that they probably shouldn’t reach on a nightly basis. No load management or preventative measure is going to stop that from happening.

With that being said, sorry to say, but the Warriors are probably cursed.

Just do the math. In the span of six months, they’ve lost an entire starting five of All-Star caliber players for, at a minimum, five games to major injuries.

  • Stephen Curry (broken wrist)
  • Klay Thompson (torn ACL)
  • Kevin Durant (torn achilles)
  • Draymond Green (torn finger ligament)
  • D’Angelo Russell (sprained thumb, knee injury)

They’ll never get Durant back and Thompson is out for the season. Curry might be up in the air. We haven’t even gotten into Kevon Looney, who has still yet to return from a hamstring injury. Same with Jacob Evans who has an adductor strain.

Last night, after Russell left yesterday’s game, Green shrugged off the team’s injury woes over the last few months.

Fair point, sure. Counterpoint: The Basketball Gods.

Maybe this is karma for adding an MVP to a 73-9 team. Maybe this is payback for leaving Oakland for the tech bros in the Chase Center. Maybe this season is a sacrifice that needed to be made for a five year run of unprecedented success. We have no idea. All we know is that it’s eerie.

But, uh, while we’re here…can someone let the Wizards know who to talk to to get this sacrifice on and popping? All I need is two years — just two. Give me a trip to the Finals and I’ll be content. That’s not much.

Seriously, though, get healthy Warriors. The NBA isn’t the same without you.
