The last PGA Tour event of the calendar year is a team event, the 2022 QBE Shootout, in Naples, Fla., at the Tiburón Golf Club’s Gold Course. There are no FedExCup points awarded at this tournament, but there is a purse of $3.8 million.

Below, we look at the 2022 QBE Shootout odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

The QBE Shootout pits teams of 2 against each other for 3 rounds instead of the traditional 4 rounds. There are 3 different formats across the 3 rounds: scramble on Friday, modified alternate shot on Saturday and four-ball on Sunday.

There are only 12 teams in the field this week, including two mixed teams for the first time ever. Nelly Korda is paired with Denny McCarthy and Lexi Thompson will play with Maverick McNealy. Among the other marquee teams are Max Homa and Kevin Kisner, Jason Day and Billy Horschel, and Steve Stricker and Cameron Young.

This is the 22nd time the QBE Shootout will be played at Tiburon Golf Club, so there will be familiarity for those who have teed it up in this event before. This course is a par 72 and will play at 7,382 yards.

Steve Stricker/Cameron Young (+1000)

Young will try to overpower the course with his length, which will help Stricker – who hasn’t played a PGA Tour event since 2021 – in the scramble and alternate shot formats. If Stricker can make some putts and Young shows some accuracy off the tee, they’ll have a shot despite not being among the favorites.

Senior Donta Scott leads the team with 15.4 ppg and sophomore Julian Reese is the top rebounder at 7.8 per game.

Wisconsin, always a defense-1st team, is led by senior Tyler Wall, who averages 14.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, while sophomore Chucky Hepburn averages 12.5 points and leads the team with 1.9 steals per game. This will be a hard, close battle between 2 teams who will be in contention down the stretch for not just a tournament berth, but also a conference title.

Maryland is not going to go undefeated. There are big games coming up for the Terrapins which will be difficult to go through without a blemish.

While this is 1 of those games, Maryland should get through the Badgers in Madison. As the underdogs in this game, I would rather bet them moneyline then on the spread. The payout is better, and the 1.5 points does not move the needle for me to reconsider. This is my favorite play in this game.

Against the spread

PASS.

If you feel that Wisconsin will win, this is the way to go. With my feeling that Maryland will win the game outright, I would rather take the risk on the ML at +100 and not worry about the spread.

Over/Under

BET OVER 130.5 (-115)

Wisconsin has never been accused of being an offensive juggernaut. It tends to slow down the game and bore the life out of its opponent. In this game, Maryland will be able to get up enough where Wisconsin will need to press a bit and put up some points.

This will be a close fight to the end and there should be some last-minute fouling to get this game up. Bet Over 130.5 (-115).

Houston may not need to score at a highenough pace for this number to hit. This is the only reason to not bet Houston. If the Ospreys were better and would be able to score, I would take Houston. But this will not be close, and Houston will just keep it at a comfortable level throughout. If I were going to bet any side in this game, it would be UNF +31.5 (-105).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 137.5 (-105).

In 8 games this season Houston has gone under its posted total 6 times. They will be able to set the pace in this matchup and its stifling defense will not allow the Ospreys to score enough to get this game over. If this game does go over, it will be because the Cougars hit 90. Something they will not be forced to do. The Under 137.5 (-105) is my favorite play in this one.

While -140 on Texas is not a bad price, the Longhorns should win this game more than comfortably. Using the ML buffer is not worth the 0.30 it will cost. Only bet the ML if you are backing Illinois in this game.

Against the spread

BET TEXAS -2.5 (-110).

While both games were played at the new Moody Center at Texas, the Longhorns beat Gonzaga by 19 (93-74) and, as mentioned, Creighton by 5. Both opponents were top-10 teams at the time.

Illinois, which is coming off the in-conference Big Ten loss to Maryland, will be another tough challenge for Texas. Illinois will certainly be focused for this game, facing the No. 2 team in the country on a national stage and trying to avoid a 2-game slide. However, Texas will and cover the -2.5 (-110).

Over/Under

BET OVER 142.5 (-110).

The Longhorns have yet to score under 72 points in a game this season. This was against Creighton, which was hoisting 3-point shots and forcing Texas to wrangle long rebounds before getting down the court.

Illinois will play a more inside game. Something Texas can also do. This should be the type of game Texas played when scoring 93 vs. Gonzaga.

PASS. Temple is the likely lean in a vacuum (with no juice) but there is no value in the bloated price here.

Against the spread

Saint Joe’s routed Temple last season (68-49 Dec. 11). The Owls went 2-for-20 from 3-point range and 7-of-18 from the free-throw line in that game.

Look for Temple to bounce back this time around. The Owls have the better defense and figure to get to the foul line a decent number of times. TU has also shot a respectable 35.9% from 3-point range (46.9% last 3 home games).

An evenly-priced -11 would be a solid play on Temple. PASS otherwise, but keep an eye on the line.

Over/Under

Last year’s meeting fell 24 points short of the total, and the Under is 2-1 the last 3 SJU-TU games; 5-1 in the last 6 Hawks’ road games, and 5-2 in Temple’s last 7 home games vs. teams with a winning road mark (SJU is 1-0).
