Alabama vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Gamecocks are stepping up their game at just the right time.

They’ve won four straight by coming up with one of its hottest shooting stretches from the field, and the defense is coming off of four straight brilliant games at guarding from three.

Bothering teams from the outside isn’t anything new.

Mississippi State hit as many threes as you did in the 66-56 South Carolina win a few days ago – the Bulldogs missed all 11. Alabama shoots three after three after three, but it’s not making enough of them.

It has hit 40% or better from three just once since Thanksgiving, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama keeps winning. It has taken down four of the last five games and gave Kentucky a bit of a push on the road.

No, it’s not all that accurate from three, but it takes so many shots from the outside that it makes enough to matter.

Can the Tide take it to the rim, too? South Carolina commits a whole lot of fouls, it turns the ball over too much, and the Crimson Tide have to generate takeaways, attack the goal, and hope to get fouled enough to slow things down at times.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina might have hit 10-of-11 against Mississippi State from the free throw line, but overall it’s been a struggle. It has a bigger problem making enough threes to keep up with the onslaught from the Tide shooters.

Alabama will do a great job on the offensive boards and will go a whole lot faster to pull away when needed.

Kentucky vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

Kentucky has been on a roll since the loss to Auburn.

It roasted Kansas, it stuffed Alabama, and it’s been able to rise up with eight wins in the last nine games before it’a rebounding well, the defense has been good enough from three, and the shooting inside has been its normal stellar self.

No, this isn’t the most consistent team around, but that’s okay. South Carolina isn’t going to shoot the lights out from three, and it’s going to give the ball up over and over and over again for easy points, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why South Carolina Will Win

This Gamecock team is something fierce inside considering there’s not a ton of size when Wildens Leveque isn’t out there.

There’s a deep bench full of parts that keep attacking everything, forces a slew of mistakes, and goes hard after every miss on the offensive end. You can’t hang with Kentucky if you’re not at least close in rebounding margin, and South Carolina can do that.

However …

South Carolina is unable to come up with much in a shootout.

It’s a team built on toughness, defense, and keeping games in range. If it can keep Kentucky in the low 70s, there’s a shot, In the 60s, and this gets interesting at home.

The Gamecocks are 8-0 when keeping opponents to under 66 points.

Kentucky has been under 66 just three times this year. It’ll get pushed, but it’ll pull away on a few good scoring runs late in the first half.

2022 College Football Schedules: All 130 Teams

The February version of college football National Signing Day doesn’t have the hold on the sport like it used to – it’s the landline phone line in a 5G world – but it closes out the recruiting season.

Sort of.

Some programs were already done recruiting back in December, but everyone is always pitching and holding on to their own guys with the transfer portal a bigger deal now.

Why bother with a whole slew of young prospects when you can go shopping and get the mature guys you need?

But recruiting high school players is still a big deal for your base.

No, not everyone is going to transfer, and no, you can’t live off of getting guys through the portal. You need the cake to put the transfer portal frosting on.

Texas A&M destroyed it this recruiting season. Shock of shocks, Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Penn State – the normal big guys did big recruiting things. But you knew that.

What teams off the normal recruiting radar crushed it this season? More to the point, which schools and coaching staffs bounced back massive after a mediocre 2021?

5. Stanford Cardinal

It certainly helped a wee bit that USC and Oregon are in a transitional period and need a year or so to get back up to speed in the high-end recruiting world, but it’s not like Stanford is competing for the same guys as the rest of the Pac-12.

David Shaw’s 2020 class wasn’t bad, but the 2021 haul was a bit lacking.

There were a few nice parts, and the Cardinal always gets a star lineman or two, but it missed the WOW factor for a program that started to fall off. After a 3-9 season coming off a four-win 2020 – granted, there were only six games – and 4-8 2019, the reciting class needed guys.

Shaw hasn’t done a whole lot in the transfer portal, but he did what he must for the program and got the right guys from across the country for the right spots.

When Stanford rocks, its lines are dominant and the running game works. In come the infrastructure players with both lines improving, Sam Roush out of Tennessee is a top tight end, and he’s got two terrific-looking offensive tackles in Lucas Heyer and Fisher Anderson.

Again, it’s different because some programs aren’t quite there yet, but Stanford had one of the best recruiting runs in the Pac-12.

North Carolina vs South Carolina Duke’s Mayo Bowl Preview

6-6 is in the eye of the beholder.

North Carolina came in to the season thinking ACC Championship, but instead it’s here after not stringing together back-to-back wins since mid-September.

It’s a maddeningly inconsistent Tar Heel team with way too many strange early season losses. The ground game picked it up late in the year – the Tar Heels led the ACC in rushing offense – but it wasn’t enough agains the good teams on the back half of the schedule.

The offensive line is shaky – there’s NO pass protection – and there were way too many penalties overall, but the team should catch a break against a Gamecock team with a questionable offense and with massive third down problems on both sides of the ball.

North Carolina might have been disappointed with its season, but 6-6 was a great run for South Carolina in head coach Shane Beamer’s first year.

The Gamecocks pulled off stunning wins over Florida and Auburn – overcoming an attack that didn’t get more than 250 yards in three of its last give games – thanks to a defense that forces a slew of takeaways and with just enough of a rushing attack to get by.

Clemson vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

Very, very, very, very quietly, Clemson is in the mix for yet another ACC Championship – not that this game matters for that – and a double-digit win season.

Not bad considering what a disaster this year has supposedly been.

Remember, this is the only team to play Georgia tough, it took overtime for NC State to pull off the win at home, and the 27-17 win by Pitt that was hardly anything bad was the worst loss by the program in the regular season since 2014.

And now the offense is starting to work.

After clunker game after clunker game, the Tigers have scored 30 or more in each of the last four games – okay, so the final points against Florida State were just wrong, but it was 30 on the scoreboard.

The running game is starting to rumble, the passing attack has gone over 200 yards in each of the last three games, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why South Carolina Will Win

Louisville, UConn, and Wake Forest. When it comes to defenses, the last three Clemson went against are a whole lot of whoopdedoo.

South Carolina might not have a killer D, but it takes away the ball with 23 forced turnovers on the year, and the secondary is third in the SEC in fewest yards allowed. It’s the offensive side, though, that has to come through.

Clemson is No. 1 in the ACC in total defense allowing 318 yards per game. South Carolina is 5-1 this season with coming up with more than 318.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

So here’s the Clemson ACC Championship game scenario …

The Tigers already baked their ACC cake with a 6-2 record. They need Wake Forest to lose to Boston College on Saturday morning, and they need North Carolina to beat NC State on Friday. They’re going to go into this game knowing whether or not they’re the Coastal champion or not.

Will that matter in the rivalry game that skipped last year and now appears to be competitive again? Nah, but if there’s no game to play for next week, it’s possible things are coached up a wee bit differently personnel-wise …

Again, nah. Clemson wants to beat South Carolina no matter what. However, this Gamecock team is good enough to pull it off if it can get the offense going early.

It’ll be a close, low-scoring four-quarter battle with the Clemson D getting one final stop to survive.

Auburn vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

And there’s the South Carolina offense going back to being the South Carolina offense.

It actually hasn’t been all that bad throughout the season, but the running game failed to do much of anything before ripping up Florida for close to 300 yards. Last week against Missouri’s awful defense? 57.

Which Auburn defense will show up? If it’s the one that decided to leave last week’s Mississippi State game early and couldn’t seem to so much right against Arkansas or Georgia, there’s a problem. If it’s the one that’s solid at getting into the backfield and can stuff the run, everything will be fine.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why South Carolina Will Win

Is TJ Finley ready for his big moment?

Auburn QB Bo Nix is out for the rest of the regular season with a foot injury, and now the offense has to perk up despite the loss of its growing star. Finley is hardly new to the SEC spotlight, but he’ll have to avoid mistakes against a South Carolina defense that’s great at taking the ball away.

The Gamecocks come up with lots and lots of picks.

Auburn doesn’t care much about the time of possession battle and the Gamecocks need to grind it out, get the ground game going, and make Finley for throws.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Finley will be more than fine.

The massive 6-7, 250-pound bomber won’t be asked to win the game all bit himself, but he already proved this year that he could step in and come through, saving the day in the Georgia State thriller.

Last year against South Carolina, he completed 17-of-21 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns with a pick … when he played for LSU.

He won’t do that, but he’ll overcome a few picks to keep things moving, and the running game and defense will take it from there.

South Carolina vs Missouri Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

So what did South Carolina do that was so right against Florida in the stunning 40-17 win?

Hey, running game, welcome to the 2021 season.

The Gamecocks had the talent in the backfield from the start, but it hasn’t been able to get going on a regular basis without more than 153 rushing yards against any FBS team.

Kevin Harris looked like his 2020 self with 128 yards against the Gators, ZaQuandre White took off for 111 yards, and the O went for close to 300 yards in a dominant performance.

The Florida defensive front is a brick wall compared to Missouri’s line.

It’s a bit of an upset that Georgia only ran for 168 yards in its 43-6 win over Mizzou last week, but South Carolina isn’t going to get away from what it wants to do. Run, run, run some more against the nation’s second-worst defense.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Missouri Will Win

That South Carolina offensive performance against Florida wasn’t normal.

The attack really didn’t run all that well all year, there are too many turnovers, and there’s a massive problem on third downs.

No, Missouri’s defense can’t hold up against anything, but the offense can move the chains a bit – at least when it’s not going against Georgia – and the D can force a few takeaways.

The South Carolina run defense has had its issues at times – Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Kentucky all ran without a problem – and this week it has to deal with Tyler Badie. He wasn’t used much against Georgia, but he ran for over 200 yards in two of the three games before that and he should be ready to roll after running just nine times against the Bulldogs. It’ll be up to him to take over the game because …

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri QB Connor Bazelak is still banged up. He missed the Georgia game, but he practiced this week and might have a shot at playing – don’t count on him quite yet. Even so, Missouri should be able to run well and keep the offense moving.

It won’t be enough.

South Carolina will keep the mojo going from the Florida win by running on the porous Tiger D on the way to a sixth win and bowl eligibility.
