Jason Kelce cites ‘guys like Vita Vea’ as reason for retirement

If anyone knows a thing or two about blocking defenders, it’s one of the greatest centers in league history.

When run stuffing, it doesn’t get much better than Tampa Bay Buccaneers NT Vita Vea. Since being drafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, Vea has logged 115 run stops, per PFF- and more often than not, the recipient of a double team from opposing offensive lines.

On a recent episode of the Ryen Russillo Podcast, former long-time Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce spoke about his likely ability to still execute the Eagles infamous “tush push” play and his retirement, stating that his “knees no longer want to block guys like [Vita] Vea.” If anyone knows a thing or two about blocking defenders, it’s one of the greatest centers in league history.

To be singled out by Kelce, who has lined up against the best-of-the-best in his 13-year career as someone he does not want to block, has to be a rewarding feeling, especially as Vea attempts to bounce back from the sprained MCL he suffered during Sunday’s win over the Detroit Lions.

The stalwart of the Buccaneers’ defensive line is not only one of the vocal leaders but arguably the team’s most electrifying personality on the field, which provides a distinguishable difference when he is on the field. Vea’s return will be welcomed as the Buccaneers host the 31st-ranked rushing offense of the Denver Broncos on Sunday in the first of a two-game homestand.

WATCH: Kevin O’Connell gives out game balls following Week 2 win

The Minnesota Vikings came off a major win in Week 2 over the reigning NFC Champions, the San Francisco 49ers.

The Minnesota Vikings came off a major win in Week 2 over the reigning NFC Champions, the San Francisco 49ers. The team was an underdog coming into it, but they didn’t listen to the outside noise and secured a win.

As a result, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell had trouble deciding who would receive a game ball.

The Vikings held on for a 24-17 win on Sunday and O’Connell couldn’t decide on who would receive the game ball. He improvised and decided that everybody on the team would receive one in a move that couldn’t have been more appropriate for the complete team win they had.

The Minnesota Vikings also posted his post-game speech to social media, and you could see the energy was high throughout the locker room. The team also shared a video of Sam Darnold, who was excited to beat the team that cut him less than a year ago.

WATCH: Bucs WR Chris Godwin left wide open for long touchdown

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers led the team to a win through the air last week against the Commanders, they are doing the same this week.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers led the team to a win through the air last week against the Commanders. They are doing the same this week now against the Lions. The team started out slow with some critical drives ending short but they rectified that.

In major part, to Liam Coen’s play design and wide receiver, Chris Godwin is making plays.

In the second quarter, the Lions and Bucs were tied, but that changed when Baker Mayfield connected with Chris Godwin outside the hashes for a long touchdown play. That play gave the Bucs the lead, and Godwin had his 36th career game of 100 receiving yards.

Keep in mind it is still the second quarter.

The Bucs now take a 13-6 lead despite the dominance of Liosn edge rusher Adian Hutchison. The offense has sputtered, but this may be the spark they need to get things going offensively and consistently for the rest of the game.

WATCH: Justin Jefferson among NFL Stars in new Pepsi commercial for NFL kickoff

The NFL and several of its players, including Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, were in the commercial, which had a Gladiator theme.

The NFL has been partnering with Pepsi for some time now and has had some great moments in their partnership. From Super Bowl Halftime shows to various media opportunities, these two have worked together to bring some special moments to fans.

Their latest collaboration came as a commercial in a unique spot.

The NFL and several of its players, including Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, were in the commercial, which had a Gladiator theme. The theme, of course, is related to the upcoming movie Gladiator II.

Other players in the commercial include Josh Allen, Derrick Henry, and Travis Kelce. They are also accompanied by musician Meghan Thee Stallion, who has found herself involved in their marketing campaigns.

The commercial will be seen during the upcoming NFL season. Look for it when the Minnesota Vikings kick off their 2024 season against the New York Giants on Sunday.

WATCH: Andre Carter II starts the second half with a strip sack

Carter II furthered his progress when he started the second half for the Vikings with a strip sack to get the ball back for the team.

Andre Carter II was a sack machine while playing at West Point for Army. Since coming to the NFL, the former UDFA has had a hard time getting his footing, but this preseason, he has finally found some with the Minnesota Vikings.

Carter II further his progress this preseason when he started the second half for the Vikings with a strip sack to get the ball back for the team.

The team scored 20 first-half points, and Carter II’s strip sack allowed the team to score three-point points to start the second. The defense has been dominant overall, making quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee struggle to find success.

The team’s pass rush has been impressive all preseason and now Andre Carter II has gotten in on making a big play in the backfield. The second half will allow for more edge rushers and linebackers to get involved in the same way, including Bo Richter, who is looking for a sack in his third straight game.

WATCH: Lucky Jackson does his best David Tyree impression

On Saturday, another impressive catch was made against another undefeated team, except it wasn’t in the Super Bowl it was in the preseason.

In Super Bowl XLII, David Tyree made one of the most memorable plays in the history of football. He made a critical catch that allowed the Giants to upset an undefeated team and save the day for his team and the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

On Saturday, another impressive catch, similar to David Tyree’s, was made against another undefeated team. Just instead of the Super Bowl, it was made in the preseason finale for the Minnesota Vikings.

Lucky Jackson, who was having an impressive first half for the Vikings, put an exclamation point on things by pinning Jaren Hall’s pass to the defenders helmet to bring it down for a big gain.

The Minnesota Vikings’ passing attack was on point in the first half. Hall looked in command, and several wide receivers made plays. It will be interesting to see what Nick Mullens and Matt Corral can do in the second half.

WATCH: Josh Oliver makes the catch through contact for the touchdown

The Minnesota Vikings have been dealing with a ton of new injuries in training camp, but they are still missing T.J. Hockenson.

The Minnesota Vikings have been dealing with a ton of new injuries in training camp, but they are still missing T.J. Hockenson. The team has several on the roster who are vying for the role of starting tight end but there is a clear leader in the clubhouse, Josh Oliver.

He extended his lead on Thursday when he was able to make a play against the tough Cleveland Browns defense.

Oliver was in the endzone working against the Browns’ secondary and made a big catch through contact. The Browns’ secondary was very physical with the Vikings’ receivers, and Oliver’s reaction showed how much the play meant after they had been battling through a rough practice on Wednesday.

T.J. Hockenson doesn’t have a timeline to return yet, but in the meantime, Josh Oliver should be a capable replacement before he returns. The team has also been utilizing Nick Muse and Johnny Mundt with varied success.

WATCH: Vikings rookie gets a pick-6 on Browns in joint practice

The Vikings’ defense is going to have to work extra hard in 2024, as the team’s offense is expected to have a less-than-ideal season.

The Vikings’ defense will have to work extra hard in 2024, as the team’s offense is expected to have a less-than-ideal season. Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy is out for the season, and now the team will have to rely on Sam Darnold full-time.

Everyone on defense will have to step up, including some undrafted free agents the team signed following the 2024 NFL Draft.

One of them has already started stepping up: Dwight McGlothern, a cornerback out of Arkansas. He made the play of the day against the Cleveland Browns in their joint practice. McGlothern picked off Jameis Winston during their team drills and was able to return it all the way for a touchdown.

Brian Flores has a way of coaching up physically talented cornerbacks and getting the most out of them. McGlothern has the size and speed to potentially turn into a steal for the Vikings with a strong 2024 season.

WATCH: Nick Mullens connects with Trishton Jackson downfield

Quarterback Nick Mullens connected with wide receiver Trishton Jackson on a deep pass in the team’s joint practice with the Cleveland Browns

The Minnesota Vikings were dealt a massive blow on Wednesday with the news that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy would miss the entirety of his rookie season after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus. This injury leaves Sam Darnold as the undisputed starting quarterback and a lot of uncertainty behind him.

Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall are suddenly battling for the backup quarterback duties, and Mullens appears to be taking full advantage of his new-found position. Where the two were previously fighting for a roster spot, it’s now possible that both make the roster, and 2024 could be another carousel season at the position.

If it is, it looks like Mullens has developed a connection with at least one of his wide receivers: Trishton Jackson. Jackson himself is embroiled in a position battle, his for the third wide receiver spot behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. While Jalen Nailor may have a lead in the battle, Jackson is making sure that the staff doesn’t have an easy decision by making big plays in practice, like the one below.
