Texas Tech (31-7 in 2018-19) played for the national championship last year, falling to Virginia in an epic overtime battle, 85-77.

This is the second time SDSU has been in this tournament.  The program first participated in the event in the 2015-16 season.  San Diego State defeated No. 14/13 California, 72-58, in its opening game but fell to No. 22 West Virginia in the championship match, 72-50.

San Diego State has played Creighton six times and trail the Bluejays 4-2 in the all-time series, which began in 1948 with a 47-33 victory for Creighton.  Their most recent match ended in an 86-80 Aztec win in the Wooden Legacy, in Fullerton, Calif, during 2013.

The Las Vegas Invitational will give San Diego State a true test, and may feature the toughest of the Aztecs’ non conference schedule.

Each Mountain West Teams Opponents for Week 4

Take a look at each team’s opponents for this week and how they did last week.

Future Foes Week Three Recap:

Air Force Falcons

Sun, Dec. 1st

Jackson State Tigers:

The Tigers of Jackson State are 1-5 so far, but that lone win comes against New Orleans-Southern and their losses to division one opponents haven’t been close. They do have SWAC preseason defensive player of the year Jayveous Mckinnis back and averaging 11.7 PPG, 8.3 RPG and 1.8 BPG. He and leading scorer junior guard Tristan Jarrett (16.7 PPG) need some help from from the rest of their team if they hope to get their first win against a division one opponent some time this week.

Boise State

Fri, Nov. 29th

UNC-Wilmington Seahawks:

The Seahawks are heading to Boise on Friday and they come in with a 4-3 record. North Carolina-Wilmington has played some North Carolina power house programs in UNC and Davidson and two of their wins come against non-division programs, but they will likely be riding a two game winning streak come friday and look out for sophomore guard Jaylen Sims (15.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG and 1.0 APG) who needs to be impactful if they want to leave Boise with a win.

Colorado State Rams

Mon, Nov. 25th-Cayman Islands Classic

New Mexico State Aggies:

Chris Jan’s squad played just one game this past week, and that was a one point loss at home to in-state rival New Mexico. The Aggies have been dominant in the WAC every year and should figure things out by conference play when they bring back senior guards A.J. Harris and Clayton Henry who have both watched from the bench this season with hand and wrist injuries. The Aggies are a very well balanced team but are led by senior wing Trevelin Queen who is averaging 18.0 PPG, 6.2 RPG and 3.0 APG. New Mexico State is 2-3 through five games, but don’t underestimate this team who has consistently punched tickets to the NCAA tournament this past decade.

Possible Opponents: Loyola Chicago Ramblers, South Florida Bulls, Washington State Cougars, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Old Dominion Monarchs, George Mason Patriots

Sun, Dec. 1st

Utah Valley Wolverines:

The Wolverines are 4-3 on the season and look to be a solid contender in the WAC against the aforementioned Aggies of New Mexico State. A team led by senior guard T.J. Washington who is averaging 17.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 2.8 APG has two solid wins agains UAB and North Dakota State. But a near upset against the Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena this past week is probably the highlight of the season for Wolverine fans this so far. Also watch out for former Oklahoma State guard Brandon Averette who compliments Washington in the backcourt and averages 14.6 PPG, 2.1 RPG and 1.9 APG while doing it.

Fresno State Bulldogs

Sat, Nov. 30th

Cal-St. Northridge Matadors:

In Mark Gottfried’s second season in Northridge the Matadors are currently 0-6 in a tough start to the season. The team is without star forward Lamine Diane who is sitting out after being ruled academically ineligible, and junior guard Terrell Gomez is leading the team in scoring (20.8 PPG) but hasn’t received much help from his team mates. The Matadors aren’t a very tall team either. That statement seams misleading when there are multiple seven footers on the roster but they haven’t logged any minutes so far this season.

Nevada Wolf Pack

Mon, Nov. 25th-Paradise Jam

Bowling Green Falcons:

The Falcons are 5-1 on the year and are coming off of an impressive 91-84 OT win against Cincinnati on Sunday night. Bowling green’s lone loss comes against a top-25 ranked LSU squad, but that game was closer than the 9 point deficit they lost by. The Falcons are good, and junior guard Justin Turner is leading them in points, assists and scoring. He is averaging over twenty points a game and has four teammates averaging over eight points a game behind him. The Wolf Pack need to bring their A game on Monday night to leave with a trophy and some momentum returning to Reno.

What We Learned After Week 13 Of Mountain West Football

Week 13 is in the books.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Titles clinched and dreams crashed.

Air Force – Donald Hammond III lived up to the Falcon moniker by throwing for 327 yards on just 9 of 10 passes and four touchdowns. This performance might have just gave the Falcons signal-caller the player of the year award.

Boise State – Apparently, it doesn’t matter who plays quarterback for Boise State as Jaylen Hendersen helped lead the Broncos to a thrasing of a win over Utah State which clinched the Mountain Division title.

Colorado State – We learned that when the Rams play a really good defense like it did vs. Wyoming that it offense struggles. This is nothing new when teams play the Cowboys but Colorado State’s offense has been extremely good of late and it just happened to run into a tough defense.

Fresno State – Oh boy. The offense line was a complete mess in this game and the coaching staff made some odd coaching decisions like not giving the ball to running back Ronnie Rivers and also passing three consecutive times with 90 seconds left and in the shadow of their goal posts.

Hawaii – Warriors win a defensive game and stopped the San Diego State rushing game to clinch the West Divison. The offensive passing game was pretty efficient but the standard Warriors eye-popping numbers were not there. However, the turnovers were held to a minimum of just one and for some reason head coach Nick Rolovich swapped between Cole McDonald and Chevan Corderio.

Nevada – Welcome to 2019, Toa Taua. The sophomore running back had just his second game of more than 100 yards on the ground. Taua’s season can be classified as a sophomore slump but he does have two games left to build up on the 135 yards he had vs. Fresno State.

New Mexico – Nothing. Literally nothing. The top two running backs are out with injuries and starting quarterback Tevaka Tuioti left the game. It is only a matter of time before Bob Davie is released of his duties.

San Diego State – The running game was completely shutdown vs. Hawaii and this area of the team has been an issue all year and it continued on the islands on Saturday night.

San Jose State – Josh Love is really good. He had 465 yards and three touchdowns but he had four picks. The only problem is that Love can not do it all and the running game did not really help his cause this week.

UNLV – The defense is better thane expected as they forced five turnovers vs. San Jose State. This is the second game they had a good defensive performance as they held Hawaii to just 21 points the week prior, but it was a game they lost.

Utah State – Where to begin? The glamour position of quarterback has not been nice to Jordan Love. He had another bad interception that led to a pick-six in the blowout loss to Boise State. The defense of the Aggies was not good and they were taken apart by third-string quarterback Jaylen Henderson.

Wyoming – There is depth at quarterback people did not know. Levi Williams had to enter the game vs. Colorado State and he moved the ball well, specifically with his feet, as Tyler Vander Wall was getting treatment for an injured leg. Also, the Cowboys defense put the clamps down on a pretty good Rams offense.

The championship game is set, bowl dreams dashed.

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap another week of Mountain West football and there was a lot on the line this week. Boise State and Hawaii both clinched the division crowns and there will be a rematch for the league title vs. the two teams. Bowl dreams were dashed with Fresno State, Colorado State and San Jose State all going down this weekend.

Also, we go through and attempt to figure out who should be offensive player of the year through each game recap, and it looks like the vote could go to any number of players.

Hawaii Bests San Diego State 14-11 To Clinch West Division Title

The Rainbow Warriors win their 1st West Division title in Mountain West Conference history. They face Boise State in the Championship Dec.7.

Hawaii Bests San Diego State 14-11 To Clinch West Division Title

The Aztecs come up just short and the ‘Bows win their first West Division title sending them to the Mountain West Championship.

Contact/Follow @tedmcgovern & @MWCwire

For the first time since joining the Mountain West, Hawaii wins the West Division and heads to the conference Championship.

Honolulu, HI-  It all came down to a last-second, fourth-quarter Aztecs field goal attempt. Again.

Kicker Matt Araiza had TWO attempts as Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich called for a time out just before Araiza missed the first 48-yarder with 2 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.

It appeared ominous- as though Rolovich accidentally gave the kicker a second chance to nail it for the tie.  Instead, after the ball was teed up again, Araiza’s second kick missed right again.  Given the distance, the wind and the pressure: this kick was no walk in the park.

With the second miss the Aztecs’ 2019 Mountain West Championship hopes were dashed and Hawaii won the West Division.

The Rainbow Warriors were favored to win the game, but many in the Aloha Stadium crowd of 21,592 were on the edge of their seats all too uncertain.  Hawaii rarely beats San Diego State, and locals called this the biggest game in a decade, and despite a deceptively low score the outcome was completely uncertain – until the very last second.

Indeed, it was a monumental breakthrough for the Rainbow Warriors.  The win sends Hawaii back to Boise for a redemption match against the Broncos on the blue turf on December 7th.

Their last match led to a 22-point loss and a final score of 59-37, although this next time around the Rainbow Warriors might find that extra gear.

Hawaii Defense played well beyond anybody’s expectations, and on offense the two-headed quarterback hydra of Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordeiro provided enough impact to secure the 14-11 win.

McDonald threw long with the surgeon-like precision, finding receivers with an almost ethereal accuracy.  Redshirt freshman Cordero took over late in the game and found his stride to outdo the elite Aztec defense to advance the ball and manage to produce a second touchdown with a talented sequence of run plays.

Hawaii scored first on an 8-yard touchdown pass from McDonald to Jason-Matthew Sharsh with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter.  Hawaii defense had forced an Aztecs punt and had to start at its own 8. Converting a crucial third-and-14 on just the third snap of the game, Hawaii went 92 yards on 15 plays to lead by a touchdown at the end the first quarter.

The Aztecs nearly evened the score just before halftime. The drive began on a defensive interception by none other than Luc Barcoo who miraculously caught a tipped pass. Agnew drove 41 yards to the Hawaii 10 yard line before they got stopped on 4th down, and they settled for a 27-yard field goal by Araiza with 18 seconds remaining in the second quarter to make it 7-3 Hawaii going into the half.

Hawaii received to start the second half with a slight 7-3 advantage. The Warriors managed only three possessions in the opening two quarters, with each drive beginning inside their 10. Hawaii defense forced three punts in the first half, holding the Aztecs to 161 yards in a defensive struggle.

Each team ate up clock in their drives to score once each after the end of the third quarter. Hawaii’s first drive of the third quarter was at its own 25 before a holding penalty put the Warriors at the 15. That led to a punt. The Warriors’ second drive was at their own 5 yard line with Cordeiro making his game debut.

His opening snap was almost a safety.  In fact, most people would say it was a safety.  There was also a near fumble on a run-option three plays later.  After all of that Cordeiro screwed his head on straight and led the Warriors to their second touchdown on an 11-yard run by Fred Holly III. Ryan Meskell made the extra point to make it 14-3 Hawaii with 5:15 remaining in the quarter.

The Aztecs went on a long drive next, led by quarterback Ryan Agnew. They scored on a gutsy quarterback run by Agnew.  They then followed up with successful 2-point conversion run whereby Agnew was first tackled by Hawaii’s defense, and then brutally tackled forward by the Aztecs offensive line.  As he got up, having broken the plane, he was dazed, confused, limping and grinning.

That cut the margin to 14-11 with 12:58 remaining in the game, and suddenly things were looking up for the Aztecs.

San Diego State held Hawaii on its next offensive and forced a punt.  The Aztecs took over at their own 20 with 7:55 on the clock. After the Aztecs failed to convert 4th down on Hawaii’s 12 yard line with 5:28 remaining the Bows took over.  Cordeiro then ran the clock, but before having to punt, the Warriors erased nearly four minutes leaving 1:31 in the game.

The Aztecs took over at their own 19 with 1:23 and  got all the way to Hawaii’s 31 yard line to set up a 48-yard field-goal attempt. They had a real chance at this point.

They had a good look at tying the game and taking it to overtime, however Matt Araiza missed right (twice) and Hawaii secured the victory.

In such a low-scoring result one would think this was not an exciting game.

This was not the case. Stats were unimpressive- SDSU quarterback Ryan Agnew completed 25 of 39 passes for 229 yards, but the two Hawaii quarterbacks only managed 215 yards (McDonald going 13-for-19 for 144 yards, a TD and a pick and Cordeiro 9-for-16 for 71 yards). Cordeiro actually led the way on the ground with 59 yards on eight carries.

But this was a hard-fought game, with all of the intensity of a much higher scoring match.

Coach Nick Rolovich hopes his players will have better success against Boise State their second time around in the Mountain West  Championship game, inspired by the Aztecs win.

The Aztecs went on to defeat Wyoming in the 2016 Mountain West Championship after losing to them in the regular season- so there is Mountain West precedent of such an outcome.

Hawaii is now 8-4 and 5-3 in the Mountain West. San Diego State is now 8-3 and 5-3 in conference.

Hawaii closes out the regular season on Nov. 30 in a non-conference match against Army at Aloha Stadium. The Aztecs return home next week to host former conference rival BYU.

Congratulations to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, your 2019 Mountain West Conference West Division Champions!

Mountain West Football Bowl Projections After Week 13

Only seven teams will be bowl eligible.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

No more bowl eligible teams.

The Mountain West will have seven bowl-eligible teams this season since the teams in contention to get to six wins all lost. The seven teams are Boise State, Air Force, Utah State, Nevada, Hawaii, San Diego State, and Wyoming.

All have seven more wins except for Utah State and with the Mountain West having just six official bowl tie-ins there is a chance a team could get left out. At this time that team would be Utah State if they end up with six wins. The NCAA has a rule that they must take all teams with seven or more wins before they can choose a six-win team. The Aggies finish the season at New Mexico and that should allow them to get to seven wins.

As where teams will be placed it is getting more clear each week but there will be some changes if the New Year’s Six spot goes to the Mountain West.

The Broncos are in line to win out and have a good chance to do so, but there are two AAC team ahead of them in the pecking order in Memphis and Cincinnati. The latter has struggled mightily against bad teams and just keeps escaping with wins. The new College Football Playoff rankings probably will have Boise State pass the Bearcats but not Memphis. Those two AAC team will play on the final week of the season and then most likely again the following week.

Things can change and as much as Boise State looks to be good enough to be ahead of any American team, that pick can not be justified currently since the Broncos are not the highest-rated team in the Group of Five.

A few notes about the bowl lineups. Starting with the Hawaii Bowl. The game has a vaguely worded tie-in which is a combination between BYU, Hawaii or an AAC team. The Warriors have a 13-game schedule and must have seven wins to secure a bowl berth. Technically, BYU takes the Mountain West spot but a Cougars vs. Warriors matchup would be a classic WAC rivalry renewal.

There is a new bowl this year and it’s a Power Five opponent from the Big Ten in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Overall, the league has six guaranteed bowl berths and is a backup for the Cheez-It Bowl if the Pac-12 or Big 12 does not have enough teams eligible. As always, there can be trades for the best matchups.

Finally, if the Mountain West is the highest-rated team in the College Football Playoff then a New Year’s Six Bowl game is an option at either the Cotton or Orange Bowl.

1. Las Vegas vs. Pac-12

– Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. MAC
– Gildan New Mexico Bowl vs. Conference USA
– Hawai’i Bowl vs. BYU or American
– NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl vs. Sun Belt

– Cheez-It Bowl Conditional for MW if bowl can’t fill a spot.

GAME NOTES (PDF): San Diego State | Hawaii

ODDS: Hawaii -3

San Diego State closes out Mountain West playing to clinch the West division of the Mountain West. There’s a lot of history siding with the Aztecs owning a 6-0 record in Hawaii since the Warriors joined the Mountain West.

The Aztecs have a championship game they’re after and prefer a meeting at the Las Vegas Bowl than another bowl game in Texas.

As for the game itself San Diego State isn’t expected to put up 30+ points and come away with a victory.

The marquee matchup features the Aztecs defense against Cole McDonald. The Aztecs defense hasn’t given up more than 23 points (the loss against Utah State) this season, but the Hawaii offense has been lighting it up with an average of 35.8 points a game.

The Aztecs’ vulnerabilities are allowing big plays down the field and Cole McDonald will make sure the exploit that. The silver lining for the Aztecs is that they are all ball hawks. The Warriors have thrown 15 picks this season and the secondary can’t wait to grab more interceptions.

The kicker to all this hype, for those of us on the mainland, is a shoddy Facebook stream thanks to a poor deal by the Mountain West. The visiting team will have to flock…to their phones and tablets?

In a time of insane deals for college football on tv, the Mountain West receives scraps. The clinching game for the Aztecs in the market is not being carried locally. Only the future will tell if commissioner Craig Thompson remedies this problem for mainland teams who play in Hawaii.

Prediction:

San Diego State will struggle early because of McDonald’s big-play passes. It’ll be an uphill battle that will need San Diego State to manage the clock and run the ball strong. Hawaii’s suspect defense will allow Ryan Agnew to throw for close to 300 yards, and the Aztecs will get a 100-yard rusher. By the time the 2nd half hits it’ll be too much to handle for Ryan Agnew.

San Diego State 27, Hawaii 31
