GAME NOTES (PDF): Fresno State | San Diego State

ODDS: Fresno State -5

SP+ PROJECTION: Fresno State by 13.9

FEI PROJECTION: Fresno State by 9.8

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: Fresno State 77.78% win probability (29.92-19.79)

After suffering one of its most disappointing losses in recent memory, the Fresno State Bulldogs will look to bounce back in their last road trip of the regular season, a date in southern California against the San Diego State Aztecs.

Things have not gone according to plan for Brady Hoke’s squad in 2023, though they won’t want to come out flat in his last game on the sidelines before his announced retirement. With the Old Oil Can on the line and another ten-win season still in sight, the Bulldogs should be well-motivated themselves. Here’s how they can come out on top against the Aztecs.

Three Keys to a Fresno State State Victory

1. Get back to finishing offensive drives.

It may be that quarterback Mikey Keene and his ongoing battle with injuries have had a more significant impact on the Bulldogs than anyone realizes. By both points per drive and available yards percentage earned per drive, the losses to San Jose State and New Mexico were the two worst offensive performances of the season. If he’s on track to be fully recovered from what was reported to be a minor concussion, as was suggested this week by head coach Jeff Tedford, it could help them get back on track in a number of ways.

Chief among those ways: Getting back into the red zone more consistently. Fresno State has only had seven drives inside the opponent’s 20-yard line in three November games, the fewest in the Mountain West, and they’ve scored only four touchdowns in those opportunities. By contrast, the Aztecs defense has allowed eight touchdowns in 13 red zone situations this month, a figure that’s comparable to when they were struggling with the likes of UCLA, Oregon State, Boise State, and Air Force back in September.

2. Sort out the run defense.

After Kairee Robinson and Jacory Croskey-Merritt ran roughshod against the Bulldogs in back-to-back weeks, ending the regular season against San Diego State’s relatively weak ground game should give Kevin Coyle’s unit something of a reprieve. Though Jaylen Armstead ran for 134 yards against San Jose State last Saturday, that was the Aztecs’ first 100-yard performance of the season and 68.7% of that yardage came on just four of 21 carries; he was also stopped for two or fewer yards seven times.

If they can keep Armstead from making a big impact, they’ll also need to be wary of quarterback Jalen Mayden, who scored twice in last year’s game against the Bulldogs and is the team’s leading rusher with 432 yards (though this does not adjust for sack yardage). San Diego State is still a team dedicated to running the ball first, evidenced by their XX% rush rate over expected.

3. Protect the quarterback.

Pass protection is likely to be another element of the game where the Bulldogs can make life easier if they can get right. After allowing five sacks to San Jose State and two to New Mexico, it may help to build confidence that the Aztecs have been shut out on that front in four different games this fall, including their two most recent losses against Colorado State and the Spartans.

While sophomore linebacker Zyrus Fiaseu has emerged as a disrupter with a team-high 5.5 sacks and a conference-best four forced fumbles, the defensive front has utterly failed to replace the likes of Jonah Tavai and Keshawn Banks as defensive tackle Tupu Alualu is the only other San Diego State defender with more than 1.5 sacks.

Prediction

Have injuries caught up with the Bulldogs? It’s hard to say exactly how big a role ailments to the likes of Mikey Keene, Jacob Spomer, and others have played down the stretch, but they’ve been most vulnerable when the offense isn’t 100%: All three losses in 2023 have come when they’ve scored fewer than 20 points.

The good news is that, at this point, the Aztecs’ offensive inefficiencies seem to be as entrenched as ever. It probably won’t be the prettiest result ever, but expect Fresno State to end the regular season on a high note and bring the Old Oil Can back to the Central Valley.

Fresno State 27, San Diego State 16

ODDS: Colorado State -3.5

OVER/UNDER: 46.5

FEI PROJECTION: Colorado State by 3.5

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: Colorado State has a 58.85% win probability (27.03-24.07)

Now to the keys to victory for the Rams.

Keys to a colorado state victory

1. Spread the ball around

Everyone knows Tory Horton and Dallin Holker are going to get the ball at some point. But Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and Jay Norvell need to call plays for other receivers. Justus Ross-Simmons and Louis Brown have shown they can be playmakers. Dylan Goffney and others provide depth when needed and have also shown they can make plays when asked.

2. Start the third quarter strong

The Rams have been outscored 51-10 in conference play in the third quarter. Colorado State needs to make a change if they want to get to a bowl game. The Aztecs haven’t been the same Aztecs this year on both sides of the ball. The Rams need to come out with fire on both sides of the ball if they want to win.

3. Stay home on defense

San Diego State isn’t as run happy as they have been in previous seasons. They are more balanced. However, QB Jaylen Maden is their leading rusher. He can take off when needed. The Rams need to stay home, set the edge, and contain the QB. They also need to spy the QB. Letting the QB run has cost them in a couple games this season.

Prediction

It’s military appreciation night in Fort Collins. The Rams want to get to bowl eligibility and the fight starts this game. The Rams will play tough punch them in the mouth football. The Aztecs will have their moments, but the Rams will finish this one strong to earn their fourth win of the season.

Final Score: Colorado State 27, San Diego State 21

[mm-video type=playlist id=01g1kx1m9c8rz2mjgq player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

With Air Force’s loss to Army this past week they are no longer the top team in the Mountain West rankings. However, they are still leading the standings with zero conference losses and on track to make it to the title game.

The race between two through four will be up for grabs and there could be a change depending on the Friday night game between UNLV who is hosting Wyoming. This is really an elimination game for both teams due to the tiebreakers of the Rebels losing to Fresno State.

The bottom is taking a turn as well with San Diego State and New Mexico losing games.

Week 10 is in the books and the changes heading into Week 11 of games.

WHO: San Diego State (1-0, 0-0 in the MWC) vs. Brigham Young Univerity (1-0, 0-0 in the Big 12)

WHEN: Friday, November 10th, 6:00 PT

WHERE: J Willard Marriot Center, Provo UT

STREAM: ESPN+

Line: KenPom, BYU is favored by 2.

One of the best early games of the season, SDSU travels to Provo to take new Big 12 member BYU. The Aztecs won the matchup in Viejas last season, but they are 4-30 all time playing in Provo, so the odds are stacked against them. Fresh off a run to the national championship game, the Aztecs are going to get everyone’s best shot every night.

San Diego State is feeling pretty good though after beating Cal State Fullerton 83-57 despite not shooting the ball well. The Aztecs took 32 shots behind the arc and only made 9 (29%), but still managed to put up 83 points and win by 26.

The big story was center Jaedon LeDee recording a career high 27 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Lamont Butler, famous for hitting the shot that sent SDSU to the championship, had a slow scoring night but tied a career high with 7 assists, and played his typical lockdown defense. He allowed only 5 points in 17 possessions as the primary defender.

The Aztec offense looked much different through one game. Gone are the days of last year where they played two bigs in the post each possession. This year they are spreading the floor, whipping the ball around, and finding good shots.

The return of Darrion Trammell will be worth watching. The southern regional MVP has missed most of training camp and the first game with a shoulder injury, but seems ready to play against BYU. Will he be rusty, or step right back into form. The Aztecs are hoping for the latter.

In order to win they’ll need to continue to play their trademark defense, as well as continue this new style of play offensively. BYU has great talent but they lack a player who can match LeDee’s size and physicality inside. LeDee scored 23 against BYU last season and will look to do that again Friday night.

They also can’t let BYU turn the game into a track meet. Both teams played really fast in their first games, but playing in transition favors BYU at home and at elevation. The Aztecs will need to slow the game down.

Texas Southern Breakdown

BYU absolutely destroyed the first opponent Houston Christian. They won 110-63 behind a barrage of 3-pointers.

Spencer Johnson has diversified his game and become more than a 3&D player. The return of Trevin Knell helps out BYU immensely with his ability to stretch the floor. Fousseyni Traore lacks height but is strong inside the paint, and his wingspan helps makeup for being shorter than most of his matchups.

BYU has arguably the best roster they’ve had under coach Mark Pope. The were picked to finish 13th in the big 12, but he’s hoping to use the 3-point shot as an equalizer, so expect the 3-point barrage to continue.

BYU should look to turn this game into a track meet. The more they run, the more they get to use their superior depth and better acclimated bodies against the Aztecs.

They also need to hit their 3-point shots. They got away with shooting 35% from deep against Houston Christian, but Houston Christian is one of the worst teams in college basketball, with arguably the worst defense in division 1. SDSU has had a top 10 defense 3 of the last 4 years, so their won’t be many east looks at the rim. If the 3-point shot is going to be an equalizer in the Big 12, tonight is the night to show that.

Players to Watch:

Jaedon LeDee– San Diego State

At 6’9” 240, LeDee is a physical presence done low. He’s also shown the ability early this season to grab a rebound and go coast to coast with it, run pick and rolls, hit skip passes, and has flashed 3-point range. It’s questionable whether BYU has any one player who can guard LeDee one on one. The Aztecs will need another stellar performance from LeDee to pull off the win.

Spencer Johnson– BYU

Johnson, the oldest player in Division 1, is also one of the best shooters in the nation. He scored 17 points against SDSU last season. His abilities are key to BYU’s strategy of stretching the floor and shooting from deep. He also looks improved early this season and seems to be a more complete player, which only makes him more dangerous.

Prediction: BYU 72, SDSU 70

This should be a close and exciting game. Don’t be surprised if Jaedon Ledee scores 20+ again, but ultimately BYU pulls it out at home behind big efforts from Johnson and Knell.

SDSU is LOADED with talent by way of veterans, rookies and impressive transfers. Buckle your seatbelts, Aztec Nation.

San Diego, CA- The Aztecs looked rock solid in their 83-57 season opening victory against the Cal State Fullerton Titans. Before the game, San Diego State unveiled banners for being an NCAA finalist and for winning the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles before a sold out crowd at Viejas Arena on the Mesa, on an electric Monday night.

During the game, San Diego State led wire-to-wire, despite almost squandering a 14-0 game opening lead going into halftime.

Jaedon LeDee lit it up, scoring a career-high 27 points including six in the first three minutes of the second half as No. 17 San Diego State broke open a close game to take down Cal State Fullerton.

LeDee also made it a double-double by grabbing 10 boards for SDSU.

Micah Parrish had five 3-pointers and scored 17 for SDSU, while newcomer transfer Reese Waters added 15.

The Aztecs made a 15-4 run after the Titans came within one at 39-38 on Grayson Carper’s 3 early in the second half. Then, out of nowhere, LeDee scored six points, including a coast-to-coast dunk and a 3-point play. Elijah Saunders then grabbed a steal and dunk, Parrish hit a 3 and Lamont Butler sank a jumper making it 54-42.

Dominic Brewton scored 13 for the Titans. Max Jones produced 11 points and Donovan Oday chipped in 10.

San Diego State lost five key players from last season’s team, including leading scorer Matt Bradley and leading rebounder Nathan Mensah.

Aztecs guard Darrion Trammell, the leading returning scorer, was sidelined with a shoulder injury since early October.

NOTABLE

San Diego State: The Aztecs are the hottest ticket in town, and Viejas Arena is the place to be. Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove, from nearby El Cajon, led the student section in the “I believe that we will win” chant before the game, and stuck around for the entire game.

UP NEXT

Cal State Fullerton hosts La Sierra on Saturday night.

SDSU heads to Provo to face long-time nemesis BYU this Friday night.

Mountain West Football: Week 10 Winners And Losers

Who came out ahead and who left something to be desired across the Mountain West in Week 10 of the college football season?

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

Encouragements and letdowns from the week that was.

With a fresh batch of rivalry games and a dash of desperation on the docket, Mountain West football’s first weekend of November action didn’t disappoint. Here are the winners and losers from Week 10.

Winners

1. Fresno State running back Malik Sherrod

The clash for the Milk Can was as advertised, but Sherrod’s contributions helped ensured the rivalry trophy would stay in Fresno following a 37-30 win against Boise State. He ran for a career-high 132 yards on 21 carries, though it was his 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that proved to be one of the Bulldogs’ biggest plays of the night. In all, Sherrod managed 255 all-purpose yards, the tenth-most in a single game in program history, and provided the Red Wave with memories they’ll talk about for a long time in the Central Valley.

2. UNLV wide receiver Ricky White

White has come alive over the past month and more than did his part on Saturday to help the Rebels keep pace in the conference title chase in a 56-14 victory over New Mexico. He had eight catches on nine targets for 165 yards and two touchdowns, the third time in four weeks he’s topped 150 receiving yards and scored multiple times.

3. Wyoming wide receiver Gunner Gentry

Sometimes, it’s not about the stats. In Gentry’s case, the nine-yard touchdown reception he hauled in during the second quarter of the Cowboys’ 24-15 win against Colorado State was his first since October 24, 2020. Knee injuries had kept him sidelined for the past two seasons, so he serves as a useful reminder that college football can often be a ground for perseverance and inspiration, to demonstrate what’s possible to others.

Losers

1. Air Force

Among the six Mountain West games last weekend, no result was more shocking than the Falcons’ litany of errors in a 23-3 defeat to Army at the Commander’s Classic. Not only did the Black Knights hold Air Force’s rushing attack to 3.9 yards per carry, they also forced six fumbles and recovered five of them, turning those opportunities into 13 points.

Quarterback Zac Larrier also had his worst game of the year at a very inopportune time, throwing two interceptions and taking two sacks while completing just 9-of-22 passes for 93 yards. The defense, meanwhile, limited Army to 4.2 yards per carry as a team but weren’t as disruptive as usual with just three tackles for loss and zero takeaways. While the Falcons still hold the inside track to hosting the conference championship, letting one of their annual goals slip away in such lopsided fashion may sting for a while.

2. Boise State

The Broncos are in the wilderness.

Little about the program is working like it did during its phenomenal run of success over two decades and the team’s 37-30 defeat against Fresno State provided plenty of evidence. Quarterbacks Maddux Madsen and Taylen Green each threw an interception, but Madsen was also just 22-of-42 for 258 yards and a touchdown and, according to Pro Football Focus, had four different turnover-worthy plays against the Bulldogs defense. Running back George Holani continued to play well following his recent return from injury, racking up 140 all-purpose yards, but he also had just three touches in the fourth quarter.

The defense, meanwhile, continued to flounder by allowing Fresno State to gain 6.4 yards per play and generating only one sack to go along with four quarterback hurries (per PFF) on 37 dropbacks. Effectively eliminated from the conference championship hunt and staring down the very real possibility of not even bowling in December, the Broncos must now move forward without top wide receiver Eric McAlister, as well, who elected to enter the transfer portal this morning. It’s a brave new world in Treasure Valley; the question is whether the blue and orange faithful are ready for it.

3. San Diego State

Speaking of less-than-ideal situations, the Aztecs’ 32-24 double-overtime loss to Utah State marked the team’s sixth defeat in their last seven games. While some individual performances stood out despite the result — linebacker Zyrus Fiaseu had three sacks, for instance, while quarterback Jalen Mayden had arguably his best overall performance of the season — many of the same problems persisted: They averaged 4.2 yards per carry, but Lucky Sutton’s 62-yard run accounted for 48.8% of the team’s rushing yardage on the game. The defense coughed up 288 yards’ worth of chunk plays and has now given up 44 plays of 20-plus yards on the season; that may not sound like much, but San Diego State gave up 48 such plays during their most recent run to the conference championship game just two years ago.

SDSU Aztecs Fall 32-24 To USU Aggies In Double Overtime

San Diego State has now given up two straight critical games against underwhelming conference teams.

Contact/Follow @tedmcgovern & @MWCwire

The Aztec Nation is bracing itself for the harsh reality that SDSU football may sustain its first losing season since 2009.

San Diego, CA-  On Saturday evening, November 4th, the San Diego State Aztecs (3-6, 1-4 MW) suffered a 32-24 defeat against the Utah State Aggies (4-5, 2-3 MW) in double overtime at Snapdragon Stadium.

After its second straight home loss against a struggling team, SDSU is now bracing for its first losing season in fourteen years. Prior to the Rocky Long era, the last Aztecs head coach to deliver a losing result was in fact Brady Hoke during his first stint as Aztecs head coach.

GAME RECAP

SDSU hosted the Utah State Aggies in front of a reported crowd of 23,096 at 4:00 p.m. PST. Both teams began the match with identical season records, and both were under pressure to win in pursuit of bowl eligibility.

During the first quarter, potential points weren’t registered when kicker Jack Browning missed a 42-yard field goal attempt.  After the scoreless first quarter, San Diego State came up with a touchdown in the second quarter when Jalen Mayden completed a nine-yard pass to Mark Redman and an extra point by Browning.

William Testa later managed a 24-yard field goal after the Aggies failed to score a touchdown, bringing the score to 7-3.  A key play at four minutes before the half involved the Aztecs faking a field goal when holder Zecharia Ramirez passed the ball to kicker Browning who was ultimately tackled for a 2-yard loss resulting in a turnover on downs, with the score remaining 7-3 at the half.

In the third quarter, at 8:51 minutes Utah State quarterback Cooper Legas, connected with Jaylen Royals for touchdown giving the Aggies a 10-7 lead. In the fourth and final quarter, the Aggies scored another touchdown to bring the score to 17-7. At 7:10 to go, Mayden connected on a 10-yard pass to Kenan Christon for touchdown making it 17-14.

SDSU blocked an Aggies punt with 2:25 remaining, which gave the Aztecs one more chance with Browning making a 23-yard field goal with 33 seconds remaining in regulation to make it 17-17, moving things into overtime.

In overtime, Mayden connected with Brionne Penny in the end zone, to give San Diego State a 24-17 lead, but Utah State responded immediately with a touchdown in turn.

The Aggies then started with the ball in 2OT and running back Robert Briggs scored on a 20-yard run before teammate Broc Lane successfully pulled off the two-point conversion required after the first OT.

The Aztecs had one last chance with the next possession, however the game was sealed when Mayden threw an interception to Ike Larsen who went for 62 yards in 2OT.

Mayden was 25-for-39 passing for 265 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Lucky Sutton led the Aztecs in rushing with 11 carries for 86 yards. Christon had a team-high 76 receiving yards.

SDSU linebacker Cody Moon managed a season-high 13 tackles and teammate Zyrus Fiaseu had a career-high three sacks.

COACHING CONCERNS

Fans and foes alike recognize that Aztecs performance is not up to the San Diego State football standard this season, and arguably, last season. San Diego State’s stock is taking a hit after years of strong, steady progress leading to national recognition and belief that SDSU was a G5 standard bearer ready for the next level, along with the Aztecs’ Pac-12 results for much of the last decade.

Rocky Long had the Aztecs showing up inside the AP Top 25 on numerous occasions, however Brady Hoke has the Aztecs falling well outside of the G5 Top 25 currently.

Even worse: the Aztecs are in rare territory now.

Now, the Aztecs need to best Colorado State, San Jose State, and Fresno State to avoid a losing season and possibly extend its bowl eligibility for its 14th straight season.  There was no bowl match during 2020, but the Aztecs did achieve eligibility that year.

One more loss gives the Aztecs their first losing season since the 2009 team went 4-8.

NEXT UP
