Nebraska vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Yes, Nebraska was able to come up with a win over Indiana but it wasn’t able to run the ball.

It ripped off runs in chunks against North Dakota and Georgia Southern, but it couldn’t do anything against Oklahoma and was stuffed too often by the Hoosiers.

Rutgers got run over by Ohio State, but that’s Ohio State. Against everyone else the Scarlet Knight defensive front was a brick wall. Granted, it didn’t deal with anyone who could pound, but beating Boston College and holding up against Iowa wasn’t horrible.

Combine that with a strong secondary and lots of plays on third downs, and Nebraska will stall way too often.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers finally got to exhale a bit.

The pressure was off, they had too weeks to let everything calm down, and what did they do? They were able to win a tight game for once.

It was 21 all against Indiana in the fourth quarter, and everything was set up for yet another close loss when the team turned into Jell-O. Instead, Nebraska got a huge pass play and another scoring drive to win by 14.

Did that signal any sort of a change? Is it simply a case of the team needing to actually know it could do it?

That might be a bit of a reach, but the offense is moving the chains, there are plenty of big plays, and this week the defense gets a break against a Rutgers offense that’s struggling to find anything that works.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Rutgers stop turning the ball over and go back to being the defense that takes it away in bunches?

It had to press against Iowa and Ohio State, and then bad things started to happen. Nebraska defense doesn’t take the ball away, and the offense has given it up multiple times in every game against Georgia Southern.

The Huskers will dominate the game in total yards, but time and again the Rutgers defense will hold firm and/or force a big mistake.

It won’t be anything pretty, but the Scarlet Knights will take it.

Best prop bets for Rutgers-Nebraska on Saturday

Breaking down the best prop bets for Rutgers-Nebraska under the Friday Night Lights.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-2, 0-2) are looking to erase the taste of the loss against Ohio State a week ago. This time it will come under the Friday Night Lights of Piscataway, New Jersey. The Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-3, 1-1) are looking to get to the .500 mark in this game.

For Greg Schiano and Rutgers, they are looking for their first-ever win over Nebraska. Their history spans over 100 years but just five total matchups. On the Huskers’ first trip to Piscataway, they won 28-21 back in 2020. The first-ever matchup came in 1920, a game played in New York that ended with Rutgers getting blanked 28-0.

According to Tipico Sportsbook, Rutgers is currently listed as a 2.5-point home underdog against the Cornhuskers. With kickoff looming, Rutgers Wire breaks down the best prop bets for this cross-divisional Big Ten showdown.

Nebraska (2-5) vs Rutgers (3-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Nebraska Will Win

Can the Husker running game show up? It’s one of the strangest quirks of the Nebraska season that it’s 0-3 when it comes up with 200 yards on the ground, but the team really does work better when it’s able to get the rushing attack going – even if the results don’t show it.

Rutgers has to maintain control of the game throughout, and that starts with dominating on the defensive front – it’s 0-3 when allowing 200 rushing yards or more.

There’s no downfield passing game for the Knights, the offensive line gives up WAY too many plays behind the line, and moving the chains has been a chore.

Why Rutgers Will Win

The biggest difference between bad Rutgers and improved Rutgers? Takeaways and defensive pressure.

The team started out the season with with seven takeaways against Michigan State, didn’t do too much over most of the season, and then picked it back up with four takeaways in the last two games.

Nebraska? It’s been good for two turnovers or more in five of the seven games – all losses. The team is 0-5 with the multiple giveaways and 2-0 when  there aren’t.

The Scarlet Knights continue to lead the Big Ten in tackles for loss, there’s good pressure on the quarterback, and the special teams are solid – especially the punting game.

What’s Going To Happen

There are certain NFL teams – like the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers – that just don’t seem to know how to win. There are good parts, a whole lot of things look good, and the effort is there, but it all just doesn’t seem to work.

That’s Nebraska.

It’s not like the team is getting embarrassed, and it hasn’t been too bad on the lines, but there’s always some element that’s missing in every game. The run defense couldn’t stop Mohamed Ibrahim and the Minnesota attack, there were too many interceptions against Rutgers, the secondary couldn’t figure out Purdue …

There was always something.

It’s a fun Friday afternoon start time, the snowstorm that hit the area is supposed to be gone, and Rutgers is about to win back-to-back games for the first time since the end of the 2014 season.

Big Ten Football Week 1 Early Predictions, What The Lines Should Be

The Big Ten has released its football schedule. Here’s a quick first look at each Week 1 game with predictions and possible lines.

The Big Ten has released its football schedule, starting in the first week of September. Here’s a quick first look at each game with predictions and possible lines.

 Pete Fiutak @PeteFiutak

Let’s have fun and just assume the Big Ten season will go off without a hitch. Done before the lines are released for the early games, here are the first guesses, predictions, and line projections for Week 1 of the Big Ten season.

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

Ohio State vs Illinois

Thursday, September 3
Memorial Stadium, Champaign, IL

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: The Buckeyes will struggle early on as they try to win the Fiesta Bowl as they press a little out of the gate, and then things will get back to normal early in the second quarter.

Illinois might have a slew of transfers coming in for the defensive front, but it won’t be enough as the Ohio State offensive line starts banging away and taking over. The big plays will come as Justin Fields and company start to score quickly, but the time of possession battle will lean the other way in the second half.

It’ll be more of a methodical win for OSU than sensational.

First Thought Prediction: Ohio State 41, Illinois 17
First Thought Line Guess: Ohio State -27.5

Big Ten 2020 Composite Schedule, 10 Most Interesting Games

Indiana vs Wisconsin

Friday, September 4
Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, WI

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: These two haven’t played since 2017 with Wisconsin winning the last ten games since dropping a stunner in 2002.

How ugly has the series been? Over the last five games, Wisconsin has won by an average of 60 to 12 with the low mark an 83-20 squeaker back in 2010.

This year’s Hoosier team, though, should be more of a problem for Bucky.

QB Michael Penix and the offensive backfield should give the Badger D fits for about a half, and the lines are just strong enough to hold up. But the reworked UW O line will take over and super-recruit RB Jalen Berger gets into a groove.

First Thought Prediction: Wisconsin 30, Indiana 16
First Thought Line Guess: Wisconsin -10

Minnesota vs Michigan State

Saturday, September 5
Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, MI

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: It’s the opener of the Mel Tucker era at Michigan State as his Spartans get a Minnesota team looking to prove that 2019 wasn’t any sort of a fluke.

Can the Gopher passing game get hot early on without star receivers Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman around anymore? It’ll be okay, but the running game will struggle against a Spartan defensive front will be a rock right out of the gate.

On the flip side, the Michigan State offense won’t be able to take advantage of a good defensive performance as drive after drive stalls. Minnesota will pull it out on a late field goal in a rough game with points and good offensive plays coming at a premium.

First Thought Prediction: Minnesota 20, Michigan State 19
First Thought Line Guess: Michigan State -3.5
