The Huskies got to enjoy missing USC and Utah – yeah, that helped the 10-2 regular season record – but now they’re back on.

Washington lost to UCLA, but now that’s not a worry. The 54-7 win over Colorado was fun, but that’s not happening this year. The Bruins and Buffaloes are off the slate, but that’s not a bad deal overall – the Huskies still get to face everyone from the former Pac-12 North, including Cal and Stanford. But …

The USC game is in Los Angeles, and that’s followed up by the date with Utah.

So last year’s two best Pac-12 teams have to be dealt with in back-to-back weeks in the second half of the season. Making this even worse is that they’re part of a run of three road games in four weeks, and going to Oregon State won’t be a picnic.

On the plus side overall, there are just our Pac-12 road games. Going to Arizona and Stanford isn’t that bad, and getting the Utes, Oregon, and Washington State in Seattle is terrific.

There’s no real fluff to use as a true tune-up.

Yeah, Tulsa is close, but that’s an FBS team – there aren’t any Central Creampuff Tech’s to use as a paycheck scrimmage.

Starting with Boise State isn’t easy, and going to Michigan State should be much more difficult than the home test last year. Overall, though, it’s an okay schedule with just enough issues to keep Washington from doing better than last year’s two-loss run.

Even so, this is still a dangerous team that could put up a monster record if it wins two of three against Oregon, USC, and Utah.

Going to Texas Tech early on will be dangerous. Arizona State is always difficult at home, and going to Utah and Washington will be battles. Again, for what Oregon is dreaming of, there can only be one loss on the way to the Pac-12 Championship. That’s not going to be easy with those landmines.

Start with this – they’re not opening the season with Georgia this time around. Everything else is easy by comparison, but going to Texas Tech is a problem.

If the Ducks really are Pac-12 Championship/CFP good, they should be able to get through this without losing twice. Win three of those four, and they should be deep in the mix for everything they’re shooting for.

New head coach Troy Taylor has a whole lot of work to do – there aren’t any layups for the Cardinal in the Pac-12, so it’s a plus no matter who they’re missing. Stanford won’t be a sure thing against Arizona at home, and it’ll likely be the underdog against Oregon, UCLA, and Washington, but it has to find a way to come up with an upset or three in Palo Alto because of the second half after the break.

Along with the home dates against the Bruins and Huskies, going to Colorado, Washington State, and Oregon State will be a problem, and hosting Notre Dame after dealing with Cal won’t be a breeze.

Beat Arizona, though, and there’s a shot to start 3-1. There’s a good chance to piece together three wins the rest of the way to get bowl eligible – with a little bit of luck.

The two-time defending Pac-12 champs don’t get a whole lot of schedule breaks overall. Last year they didn’t get Cal, but they also caught a massive solid by not getting Washington.

This time around there’s no Washington State – that’s not a bad thing considering what a tough battle that was in a 21-17 Ute win last season – to go along with the horrible break …

No Stanford. This year, that’s the Pac-12 team you want to face. The Utes took it down 42-7 in 2022.

Cal is a home game, but the date with Huskies is up in Seattle in mid-November. That’s a problem made worse by the road game at USC and the trip to Corvallis to deal with a nasty Oregon State squad.

There might be back-to-back road games against Washington and Arizona in mid-November, but there are just four Pac-12 game away from Salt Lake City. Getting UCLA and Oregon at home helps.

Give the Utes credit. They’re not shying away from a non-conference challenge (cough … UCLA … cough).

Now Florida has to deal with Rice-Eccles.

It was one of the better games of last season, and it came in the opener. Utah had the Gators in big, big trouble before Cam Rising’s late interception. That starts the season followed up by a trip to Baylor.

The overall schedule is just hard enough to keep the Utes from getting to the College Football Playoff – there are at least two losses in there somewhere – but it’s not nasty enough to keep them from playing for another Pac-12 championship.

In one of the more unfortunate scheduling quirks of of 2022, USC was able to miss both Oregon and Washington. That was a huge part of the puzzle to get the Trojans within a hamstring of the College Football Playoff.

The two other big boys are back on the slate now in back-to-back weeks in November. That stinks, but missing both Oregon State – who was a nasty out in 2022 – and Washington State isn’t a bad deal.

Yeah, having Oregon and Washington back on the schedule is a big deal, but … boo hoo. If USC really is improved enough defensively to be back in the Pac-12 Championship and CFP mix, there’s no real problem with the conference slate.

There are only four Pac-12 road games and five away dates overall. Washington has to come to LA, UCLA has to make the trip down the road, and best of all, Utah is a home game. Three of the conference road games against Cal, Arizona State, and Colorado are about as manageable as they get. The date at Oregon isn’t.

However, there’s a run of three road games in four weeks, and the end of the fun is Notre Dame. The finishing kick is rough with that date against the Irish, Utah, at Cal, Washington, at Oregon, UCLA, but is USC is that good, getting back to the Pac-12 Championship at 11-1 is possible.

UCLA didn’t exactly extend itself last year in non-conference play – Bowling Green, Alabama State, South Alabama – and there aren’t any Power Five programs among this year’s crop. Again, no Oregon and no Washington means the world – that’s a beauty of a parting gift before going off to the Big Ten. It’s a slate built to push for ten wins if everything reloads in a hurry, but those three road games against USC, Utah, and Oregon State will mean everything.
