Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Ducks miss from the Pac-12 slate?

It would be nice to miss a USC or Utah from what was the Pac-12 South, but not having to deal with UCLA isn’t a bad thing and not playing Arizona this year might be a big positive.

Here’s the biggest bonus – USC, Oregon State, Washington State – those last two will be even nastier this season – are all coming to Autzen. However …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Oregon Football Schedule What Really Matters

For a program that’s thinking really, really College Football Playoff big, there are just enough nasty road dates to be a problem.

Going to Texas Tech early on will be dangerous. Arizona State is always difficult at home, and going to Utah and Washington will be battles. Again, for what Oregon is dreaming of, there can only be one loss on the way to the Pac-12 Championship. That’s not going to be easy with those landmines.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Start with this – they’re not opening the season with Georgia this time around. Everything else is easy by comparison, but going to Texas Tech is a problem.

If the Ducks really are Pac-12 Championship/CFP good, they should be able to get through this without losing twice. With all due respect to a strong Oregon State team – because it’s an Oregon home game – at Texas Tech, at Washington, at Utah, USC. Win three of those four, and they should be deep in the mix for everything they’re shooting for.

Oregon Ducks blogger and podcast host agrees with us: USC got the short end of the stick

Think we’re overreacting to the #Pac12FB schedule? @Ducks_Wire editor and Sco-Ing Long Oregon podcast host @ZacharyCNeel thinks USC fans have a right to be angry.

File this one under “His words, not mine.”

We have stated our case, making the argument that USC was uniquely disadvantaged by the 2023 Pac-12 football schedule. Surely, everyone else in the Pac-12 media ecosystem thinks we’re just whining and bellyaching on our way out the door to the Big Ten.

Or maybe not!

Not so fast, my friend!

Ducks Wire editor Zachary Neel has offered his analysis of every team’s Pac-12 football schedule for 2023. You can read Zach’s incisive, thoughtful piece and judge for yourself. We encourage you to follow Zach and his team at Ducks Wire for complete coverage of Oregon football and Oregon athletics.

Zach, who — full disclosure — invited Trojans Wire onto his new podcast earlier this week, has thought about the claim that USC was given a uniquely bad break by the Pac-12 on its way out the door.

Zach wrestled with the facts. He considered all the angles.

Here’s what he had to say:

“What became clear during that exercise, and in listening to the narrative built over the past week, is that the USC Trojan fans are not happy with how things played out in the schedule-making process.

“I think their anger is justified, as well.”

Zach continues a little later in his piece, noting that USC plays Notre Dame, Utah, Washington and Oregon in a five-week stretch:

“If you compare that stretch of five games for USC to the toughest stretch of games on Oregon’s schedule — Week 7 at Washington, Week 8 vs. Washington State, and Week 9 at Utah — it’s clear which option I’d rather have. On top of that, the Ducks also get to play Utah the week after the Utes play USC, and USC the week after the Trojans play Washington. That’s not nothing.”

His words, not mine.

An Oregon blogger and podcast host agrees with Trojans Wire. It’s not just us. Others outside our USC-centric orbit agree.

Be sure to listen to Zach’s new Oregon podcast, Sco-Ing Long. Continue to follow his work at Ducks Wire all year long.

We can all be adults here and admit that George Kliavkoff is being a smart, savvy Pac-12 commish

If you were #Pac12 commissioner right now, you would have catered to #Oregon — not #USC — in crafting your football schedule. Even @Ducks_Wire would agree.

Let’s be adults here, folks. Let’s be grownups. Let’s be mature individuals and admit the simple truth. It’s okay. It’s not a sign of weakness to admit what we can all see in the room: The Pac-12 very clearly catered to the University of Oregon in crafting and approving of its 2023 conference football schedule. The conference was just as clear and transparent in not catering to the University of Southern California.

We can simply admit this as mature adults, or we can look off to the side and pretend this didn’t happen. It’s your choice.

We don’t have to pretend. We can be honest with ourselves and each other and see this schedule for what it is.

Let’s be very clear: USC was catered to and given a soft, cushiony ride last year in the 2022 schedule release. The Pac-12 rolled out the red carpet for the Trojans. We never refused to admit that, too.

Then came the move to the Big Ten. Suddenly, USC was no longer valued by George Kliavkoff. Oregon was.

We can just admit this or pretend these considerations are irrelevant. Come on now. Let’s go through the details and simply admit the truth:

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Ducks miss from the Pac-12 South Division?

There’s no complaining about the Pac-12 schedule with one of the road trips at Arizona, another at Colorado, and with defending conference champion Utah and UCLA having to come to Eugene – and the date with the Bruins coming off a week off. That means they’re missing Arizona State and USC – that’s not a bad deal.

From the North, the road games are at Cal, Oregon State, and Washington State. Again, there’s no complaint there – Washington is a home game – but there are five conference road games.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: Dan Lanning, welcome to Oregon

You’ll have to forgive the new coaching staff for being a wee bit grouchy about what it’s walking into with the non-conference schedule.

Lanning gets to go against the Georgia program he’s coming from, Eastern Washington’s offense is always a pain, and dealing with BYU isn’t going to be a layup. That’s all before diving into Pac-12 play.

Oregon Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The non-conference slate isn’t easy, but the top Pac-12 games are at home. The second half of the season is sneaky-tough, but that October 15th week off is perfectly timed and the team doesn’t have to leave the state of Oregon after November 5th.

It’s tough enough to all but forget about a trip to the College Football Playoff, but missing USC and Utah is everything in the battle to get back to the Pac-12 Championship.

Oregon Ducks game at Stanford slated for 12:30pm kickoff on ABC

The Ducks are scheduled for a 12:30 ABC telecast in their first conference road game at Stanford Oct. 2.

High rankings come with prime television slots and the Ducks currently have both.

Oregon will face Stanford Oct. 2 in its first conference road game and the Pac-12 Conference has announced the game will be at 12:30 on ABC national television.

The Ducks are currently ranked No. 4 in the USA TODAY Coaches poll and No. 3 in the Associated Press poll. The Cardinal are currently 2-1 and have rebounded nicely after a disappointing loss at Kansas State to open up the season. Stanford then managed to beat up on USC and Vanderbilt.

Oregon opens up its conference season this week with a home game against Arizona, losers of 15 straight games. Stanford has a huge matchup with UCLA on Saturday.

Oregon vs. Arizona slated for Pac-12 After Dark on ESPN

The Ducks will kick off their conference schedule with a night game at Autzen vs. the Arizona Wildcats.

It’s going to be a late one.

The Pac-12 announced their game times and television assignments for the games on September 25th and the Ducks will host Arizona for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPN.

Oregon, barring one of the biggest upsets of all time, will be 3-0 heading into its conference game of the season. On the other sideline will be a Wildcats team that hasn’t won since Oct. 5, 2019 against Colorado. Their 14-game losing streak should end this Saturday, however, as they host Northern Arizona.

September 2th5 is the first date for the conference where everyone plays a Pac-12 game, signifying the start of conference action.

The big game of the day is going to be Chip Kelly facing off against his old nemesis David Shaw as UCLA goes to Stanford. Oregon State will be traveling to USC in a contest that all of the sudden doesn’t look like an automatic win for the Trojans.

Oregon Football Schedule Analysis: Fresno State isn’t a lightweight, but it’s a winnable opener and Stony Brook is a light scrimmage, but the Ducks can be forgiven for not doing more with their non-conference schedule considering they have to travel to Ohio State in what should be one of college football’s biggest games of 2021.

There’s a big break, though, in Pac-12 play with no USC or Arizona State from the South, and without having to play two road games in a row. However, they have to go to Washington, UCLA and Stanford, and having to go to Utah late in the season is nasty.
