Cal’s last Pac-12 football game is forgettable: Bears are blown out by Texas Tech

Cal’s last Pac-12 football game was a dud.

The Pac-12 Conference went 1-1 on bowl games on Saturday. UCLA won its bowl game, but Cal lost decisively.

The Golden Bears faced the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Independence Bowl. Despite the fact that Cal had a 14-7 lead at the start of the second quarter, it was a forgettable night for the Bears. It was all Texas Tech after Cal’s positive first quarter.

Texas Tech scored 17 points in the second quarter to take a 24-14 lead at the half. It was over from that point on.

Jaydn Ott, who stunned everybody with a hilarious return announcement for Cal, rushed the ball 16 times for 45 yards and a score. However, Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza threw three interceptions and was sacked six times in a brutal performance.

Tahj Brooks, who decided to return for one more year with Texas Tech, had 98 yards and a score on the ground. Tech quarterback Behren Morton threw for three touchdowns and just one interception, and he was sacked just one time.

Texas Tech finished the year with a 7-6 record, and Cal has a lot of question marks heading into ACC play in 2024, although Ott returning certainly helps.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Golden Bears miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Bears catch an awful break missing both Arizona and Colorado. Both of them are going to be better, but they’re still on the lower end of the Pac-12 scale. Making things worse, they have to go on the road to Utah, Oregon, and UCLA, however …

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Cal Football Schedule What Really Matters

The rough stretch on the road comes late, which only matters because one of those games is over at Stanford – it’s a road game, but hardly taxing. The team only leaves California three times until November and just four times overall.

There are back-to-back road games just that one time at the end – Stanford and UCLA. With that the team has to take care of things at home with an upset somewhere. The game changes with a big performance against Auburn or Oregon State or Washington State – the Bears need to take down at least one of those.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not all that bad. As long as Cal beats North Texas on the road to start the season, there’s a good shot to at least bank three wins before October. It’s going to be a fight to get to six wins without a few huge improvements – Cal should be the underdog at least seven times, and likely closer to nine – but it’s at least a manageable slate.

Former Cal Golden Bear offers a simple reminder to anxious USC football fans

While most #USC fans focused on the defense’s collapse vs Cal, a former Golden Bear reminded @DonJamesSports that Caleb Williams is awesome.

It always helps to have a little perspective.

Yes, USC’s defense was terrible against Cal. However, the Trojans still won. Winning is the bottom line, after all. It’s why we play games. It’s why people care about the outcome.

Winning is the goal, more than style points or anything else.

USC won. Why did it win? Caleb Williams — that’s why.

Caleb Williams passed for 360 yards, rushed for a touchdown and threw two of his four scoring passes to Michael Jackson III, leading USC to a 41-35 victory over California.

We spoke with former Cal cornerback Darius Allensworth about the game Saturday night.

Trojans Wire: What did you think of the outcome Saturday night, with the USC win over Cal?

Allensworth: I think Jack Plummer and Cal fought hard and made a great run at the end but it was a little too late. Caleb Williams is explosive on offensive and they have so much depth on that side of the ball it’s damn near impossible to contain them.

*

We then asked Allensworth about a few other topics:

Trojans Wire: Who was your favorite player growing up?

Allensworth: “Beast Mode” Marshawn Lynch

Trojans Wire: What was your favorite play you made as a Cal Golden Bear?

Allensworth: It’s tied! A diving pick against Arizona State in 2016 versus my guy Manny Wilkins and a forced fumble against Washington in 2015.

USC football: the state of the program entering November

We had a lot to discuss with @MarkRogersTV at the @VoiceOfCFB. We also had Cal insider @JakeCurtis53 to talk about the Golden Bears.

It’s the month of November. We got past October and Halloween and trick-or-treating. More than 60 percent of the college football season has been completed. If we aren’t in the home stretch, we are certainly getting close.

We have a weekly USC show at The Voice of College Football with host Mark Rogers. Our live broadcast Monday night tackled a lot of different topics. We invite you to subscribe to, like, and share Mark’s USC channel where we air this show plus our USC postgame show after every Trojan game during the season.

We will share the video of our show below, which — near the end — had a segment with California Golden Bear insider Jake Curtis of the Cal Sports Report before this week’s USC-Cal game.

Here’s a rundown of all the topic we hit on in this broadcast, which took stock of the USC program at the start of November:

Cal just lost to Colorado in OT — does this put Justin Wilcox on the hot seat?

It is reasonable to ask if Justin Wilcox is on the hot seat at #Cal after a brutal loss to Colorado in OT. However, a few details about this situation are important to know.

The California Golden Bears committed a big no-no on Saturday: They lost at Colorado to a bunch of Buffaloes which is widely regarded as being one of the worst teams in the country, definitely the worst team among all Power Five conference squads in the country.

Virginia isn’t as bad as Colorado. Boston College isn’t as bad. B.C. was able to beat Louisville earlier this year. Vanderbilt isn’t as bad. Rutgers isn’t as bad. Northwestern might be the one team in the Power Five ranks Colorado could beat, but it’s clear that the Buffaloes are not very good at all. They have been the worst team in the Pac-12 throughout the first half of the season.

After Cal lost to Colorado, one must ask: Is Justin Wilcox on the hot seat in Berkeley? Let’s examine:

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Golden Bears miss from the Pac-12 South Division?

The Bears can’t complain too much about who they miss from the Pac-12 South. The have to go to USC and close out the regular season against UCLA, but they also catch the monster break of playing both Arizona and Colorado.

If you’re going to miss two teams in the Pac-12, Utah and Arizona State aren’t bad to skip.

The breaks are even bigger in the North with Oregon and Washington having to come to Berkeley.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: There’s a shot for a massive start

The road game at Notre Dame is a problem, but that and the manageable trip to Washington State are the only games against teams that went bowling last year in the first seven games.

It’s the wrong way to put it considering USC is a part of this, but there are just five games against teams that were bowl eligible, and none of them – other than Notre Dame – are an almost certain loss.

Cal Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not bad.

Cal always seems to get hit with rough schedules against top teams that make it almost impossible to get to six wins without a lot of luck. That’s not the case this time around.

With this schedule, there’s no excuse not to have at least four wins banked before November, and it could and should be even more.

Cal College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Cal just can’t get this O dog to hunt. The coaching staff has been tremendous, there have been plenty of good parts, and the support has been there from the D, but it’s been way too hard for the Bears to score points over the last few years.

Scoring has been an issue. Cal has managed to hit the 30-point mark just five times over the last three seasons after getting there five times in 2017 and averaging 37 a game in 2016. Now for the positive …

– Chase Garbers is back for yet another season. The senior quarterback didn’t have a lick of luck last season, but the team has been better over the last three years when he’s in and healthy.

The receiving corps returns leading target Kekoa Crawford for his super senior year, and he’s not along with six of the top seven receivers/tight ends returning. Second-leading man Makai Polk is the only key loss – he left for Mississippi State.

– The ground attack has been a positive at times under Wilcox, but it sputtered last year with no push from the line that got destroyed by even the slightest semblance of a pass rush.

Damien Moore and Marcel Dancy are big, versatile backs who each averaged over five yards per carry, but the hope is for 234-pound senior Christopher Brown to can get back to form after health issues held him to just 65 yards. Four of the five starters return up front with senior C Michael Saffell the best of the bunch.

Cal Football Schedule Analysis: The Bears have to go to TCU – 2018 Cheez-It Bowl rematch!!! – and Nevada is dangerous, but throw in the Sacramento State game and the non-conference slate isn’t that bad.

Missing USC from the South would’ve been nice, but at least the game is in Berkeley, and there’s no complaining about not having to deal with Arizona State or Utah. And that’s where the breaks stop.

At Washington, at Oregon, three of the last four games on the road – uh oh. The Bears aren’t going to be able to afford any big whiffs at home.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Cal Golden Bears Offense 3 Things To Know

The Cal offense is a far cry from where it was just a few years ago, struggling to get to a whole lot going – it only scored 30 or more twice – and finished the season last in the Pac-12 in both scoring and total offense, averaging 329 yards and 21.2 points per game.

However, part of the problem was its quarterback issues – starter Chase Garbers missed four times in the middle of the season, and wasn’t 100% for another two games with a shoulder injury. Cal lost five of those six games.

He’s back and healthy – Cal was 8-0 when he played a full game – and former UCLA transfer Devon Modster is back as the No. 2 man. Now the passing game has to be sharper after finishing last in the Pac-12 in efficiency and yards.

CFN in 60 Video: Cal Golden Bears Preview
[jwplayer nRWCAU2d]

The receiving corps needs to get more work. Leading target Nikko Remigio is back, but he only caught 38 passes for 513 yards and three scores. Second-leading receiver Jordan Duncan is gone, but ten of the top 11 wideouts and tight ends are back. 6-5, 230-pound junior TE Jake Tonges returns after averaging over 20 yards per grab.

The O line was very young, and now the growing pains should pay off with all five starters expected back for a line that struggled to keep defenses out of the backfield and was the worst in the Pac-12 in sacks allowed. It’s not a massive line, but it can move. Now it has to do more for a running game that averaged a pedestrian 132 yards per game.

230-pound thumper Christopher Brown returns after leading the way with 914 yards and eight scored, but he’s not alone. Backups Marcel Dancy and DeShawn Collins return, but they all need more work and room to move.
