Oregon vs Cal Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

The Ducks passed the big test.

They were able to get through a slew of decent games after the disaster against Georgia, but they didn’t play anyone like UCLA. With a dominant offensive balance and the defense rising up, more and more they’re looking like the star of the Pac-12.

The offensive line has been fantastic, the offense is averaging over 500 yards per game, and an early burst of points should be enough to take out a relatively punchless Cal team that’s having problems coming up with more than 21 points.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Cal Will Win

The Bears have to keep things moving and do whatever they can to slow the game down. They’re not all that bad in the time of possession battle, and this week they get an Oregon defense that’s solid, but it’s among the worst in the nation in third down stops.

The Ducks have a hard time getting the D off the field, penalties are an issue, and for all the positives, coming up with takeaways hasn’t been all that easy. Cal might not move the ball with ease – especially on the ground – but it doesn’t turn it over with just four giveaways.

The Bears have to be perfect, the good run defense has to be great, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon has too much offense and too many options.

The offensive line play has been stellar – everyone is getting time to work. Cal can get into the backfield a little bit, but it won’t be enough to matter. Give it a quarter, and then the burst will come.

Cal and QB Jack Plummer will come up with decent yards through the air, but it won’t be enough.

UCLA vs Oregon Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

The offensive line is good enough to pound away on the Oregon defensive front. Start with that, keep the most efficient passing game in the Pac-12 going, and then turn it over to the league’s best defense.

It took a few years to get to this point, but UCLA is physical enough to hammer away for well over five yards per carry. Only one team has been able to do that against the Oregon D so far, and ast it turns out, Georgia is pretty good.

If you’re averaging five yards per carry running on Washington and Utah like UCLA did, you know how to get nasty up front.

There’s nothing soft about this Bruin team. It’s tough on the defensive line, it’s great at taking the ball away in bunches, and it’s not getting punched by anyone’s ground game.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Oregon Will Win

Finally, UCLA has to leave the friendly confines of the Rose Bowl. It had to go on just one road game so far, and playing at Colorado hardly counts.

Oregon has found its offensive groove since the disaster against Georgia to open the season, averaging almost 50 points per game since.

UCLA’s run defense has been wonderful – it held up against Utah – but it hasn’t faced a ground game that can do what the Ducks can. It leads the Pac-12 with a wonderful group of sophomore backs helped by the mobility of QB Bo Nix.

Yes, UCLA has a versatile offense, and yes, Dorian Thompson-Robinson can get hot and push for 300 yards, but that’s baked into the plan. Oregon is used to getting bombed on by teams trying to keep up the pace, and everything turns out fine.

However …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA really is that good.

The offensive line has been fantastic, the defense has held up when it matters, and the talent is in place to be a true threat to not just win the Pac-12 title, but get to the College Football Playoff.

But it’ll have to go 12-1 to do it.

The Oregon defensive front will get to Thompson-Robinson in a few key spots, and the offensive line that allowed just one sack so far will keep Bo Nix clean enough to get the attack moving.

This will be a blast of a back-and-forth fight with a whole lot of mood and momentum swings. At home, Oregon will take over in the last ten minutes to look like the team to beat in the Pac-12.

Oregon vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

It might be just this simple – can Stanford stop with all the turnovers?

The running game hasn’t been great – and it doesn’t help to lose leading rusher EJ Smith for the season – but Tanner McKee has been able to wing it around a bit and get the O moving.

Yards haven’t been the problem – the 12 turnovers in three games, though, hurt. However, Oregon hasn’t been great on third downs, it’s getting rocked for over 300 passing yards per game, and now it should be bombs away.

Yes, the secondary has had a whole slew of issues, but facing USC’s Caleb Williams and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. had something to do with that.

And then there’s the giant question in this if Stanford gets moving …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Oregon Will Win

Is Bo Nix good now?

The former Auburn quarterback has been very much maligned over his career, and it didn’t help that his Oregon career started against the Georgia defense. However, since then he has been fantastic.

Against Eastern Washington, BYU, and Washington State he hit 75% of his throws for close to 1,000 yards and ten touchdowns with a pick. He settled in, the offensive line is giving him all the time he needs, and the offense has exploded from there.

The defense will be better – it has too much talent to continue to struggle so much – but now the team is used to shootouts. It should be just fine if Stanford gets going.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Cardinal will hang around for a little bit with a good balance and some big plays through the air, but Oregon will pull away.

Nix won’t be perfect, but he’ll hit his third down throws to keep everything moving. The defense will take care of the rest with three takeaways to overcome all the yards it allows.

Oregon vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

That’s the Oregon we all thought we were getting going into the season.

Getting rocked by Georgia – as it turns out – isn’t any big deal this season, but everyone abandoned the idea of the Ducks being good after the ugly 49-3 loss.

The 70-14 win over a not-bad Eastern Washington team from the FCS was good, the dominant 41-20 win over BYU last week was terrific.

The offense has been balanced over the last two weeks, Bo Nix has been solid, and the running backs are ripping off yards in chunks as the lines are taking over.

The offensive front has yet to allow a sack, it blasted away on the strong BYU defensive front, and it’s going to grind away on the Cougars.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Washington State Will Win

Oregon’s running game is good, and the offensive line is fantastic. Are either as tough or as nasty as the Wisconsin ground attack behind that offensive front? Close, but not really.

Washington State was able to hold up just fine against the bully, beating Wisconsin and it’s tough offense and great defense 17-14. It wasn’t pretty, but it found a way.

In this, Wazzu can pull this off by keeping everything moving. As good as the Oregon defense might be, it’s not able to come up with enough third down stops.

Georgia hit 9-of-10 third down tries, and Eastern Washington and BYU were able to connect on the money downs a bit too easily.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State has been tough enough on defense, and Cameron Ward is a good enough quarterback, to pull this off, but …

Oregon is the real deal.

That’s not to say Wazzu isn’t, but the Ducks have settled in, the talent is in place to make a big run, and they’ll overcome the great atmosphere and energy to get out alive thanks to a few key takeaways and a good offensive balance.
