Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners are coming off a tough game against Texas Tech, but before that everything was clucking defensively to go along with lights-out shooting from three. The outside shooting stalled against the Red Raiders, but everything is about to ramp up against a struggling Cyclone D.

Iowa State is miserable at guarding the three, struggles at getting the key rebounds, and doesn’t score consistently enough to keep up if OU goes on a run. But …

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Cyclones will keep shooting from the outside – mostly because they’re usually behind and need a spark – and they’re not bad at generating points off of defensive pressure.

No, they’re not going to shut down the Sooner offense cold, but the have a shot at getting hot against a D that struggles against teams that can hit from the outside. Iowa State is good enough at moving the ball around to get the right shot from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State has yet to come up with a win in Big 12 play and this should be the right time to come up with a big upset if the offense can shoot like it did in the tough loss to West Virginia a few days ago, but …

Oklahoma’s loss to Texas Tech changes the dynamic. It’ll be a focused Sooner team that won’t make enough mistakes to screw this up.

2021 Big 12 Recruiting Rankings, Breakdown

No, really. How good were the Big 12 classes this 2021 recruiting season?

1. Oklahoma

Once again, Oklahoma dominated the conference recruiting by a mile helped by the coaching uncertainty at Texas throughout the process and with the rest of the Big 12 being the rest of the Big 12. There’s more for the already-great passing game, more pass rushers, and more talent with the top ten Sooner signings stronger than anything the rest of the Big 12 – maybe without Texas – can put together combined.

2. Texas

It’s fine. Compared to the rest of the Big 12 it’s great, compared to Oklahoma it’s just okay, and considering the coaching uncertainty, it’s a solid class. It’s not nearly as huge as the 2019 version, and last year’s class cranked up the speed and talent level, but this one has a whole lot of athletes, a lot for the defense backfield and receiver, and the lines will be left for future classes.

3. West Virginia

The first class under Neal Brown was mostly about infrastructure, but this one is going after the future stars for the skill spots with good running backs, a few nice tight ends, and the pass rushers to be more disruptive. No, the Mountaineers aren’t going to compete with Oklahoma and Texas for talent, but they got enough great prospects to be among the best of the league’s other eight teams.

4. Oklahoma State

The secondary got enough talent to see a decent upgrade going forward, and there were a whole lot of receiver prospects. There’s not a ton of high-end talent, but the program never gets the big-time five-star types and it still does more than fine. It’s a very good class, but it’s not close to what Oklahoma was able to get and it doesn’t have high-end talent of Texas.

5. Kansas

The recruiting has been building. Les Miles upgraded the talent level in last year’s class, and this one takes things up a few notches with a whole slew of defensive backs who could’ve played anywhere in the Big 12, and with a nod to the passing game with a few quarterbacks to develop along with some good-looking receivers.

Every Team’s Star | Class Strengths
What’s Missing | 2021 All-Big 12 Recruiting Team

6. Iowa State

It’s another class of solid Iowa State prospects without a whole slew of superstars, but there are just enough good players to develop into what the program does. RB Eli Sanders is more of a quick back than the usual pounder, and the few offensive linemen brought in are good.

7. TCU

If the 2019 class was about quantity, and the 2002 class was about quality, this one is in the middle. There’s enough skill talent to add to the mix to build around for the near future, and as always under Gary Patterson, write the positions for the prospects in pencil – they’ll be moved around where they’ll fit best.

8. Kansas State

Lsat year was about getting bodies and building things up under head coach Chris Klieman, but this time around the class is looking to do more to upgrade the overall talent level. QB Jake Rubley is the main man for the near future and the star to build around, but the defense got the most bulk talent.

9. Texas Tech

You never want to rely on two players to make a recruiting class, but it’s all about QB Behren Morton and RB Cam’Ron Vadez. They’re the two high-end talents who could’ve gone almost anywhere, and they’re what take this class from okay to potentially strong.

10. Baylor

The class a few years ago was strong, there wasn’t any time for Dave Aranda to work in 2020, and now this season’s class is just sort of okay. The hope was for the full season to load up would lead to something big, but it’s a smallish haul of prospects without any sure-thing superstars.

Oklahoma (11-4) vs Texas Tech (12-5) Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners have found their groove over the last few weeks, coming up with great wins over Kansas and Texas before making a statement against a terrific Alabama team on Saturday.

They’re not necessarily doing anything amazing offensively – they’re not shooting particularly well and they’ve been awful on the free throw line – but the defense has been outstanding.

OU doesn’t screw up, it hits enough free throws to get by, and few teams are playing with more confidence.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raiders don’t screw up, either. They’re among the best teams in the country in turnover margin, they force a ton of mistakes, and they’re careful with the ball.

Unlike OU – who’s usually strong on the free throw line – Texas Tech is a rock when it gets to the line and it makes its way there more than anyone in the Big 12. Considering the Sooners aren’t shooting all that well, the Red Raider defense should be able to rise up, the rebounding will be there, and the overall mix of positives should be enough to pull this off … again.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech won the first time against the Sooners back in late December with its defense in the 69-67 game. It simply shot better.

As amazing as Oklahoma has been, most of the wins have been at home during this run, it only won at Texas by one, and it lost its previous two road games. The Texas Tech defense will be good enough in the final few minutes to come up with a second straight win against the two.

Alabama (14-3) vs Oklahoma (10-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Alabama Will Win

The Crimson Tide have been fabulous from the field over their ten-game winning streak, they’re great from the line, and they  proved in the win over Kentucky that they can win even when they’re not on from three.

Few teams in America shoot or make more threes than Alabama, and they’re going to keep on firing away. Bomb from three, come up with a slew of steals, and put the pressure on the other side – it’s working.

For all of the good things Oklahoma is doing, it’s nothing special at stopping the three – teams are hitting 34% from outside on the Sooner D. But …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

OU is more than happy to get into a three-point shooting contest with anyone. The Sooners don’t shoot as many as Alabama, but they have no problems bombing away. They’re good enough on the offensive boards and they’re just good enough on the inside, too, to score in a variety of ways.

Yes, Alabama is one of the best teams in the country at forcing steals and mistakes, but OU is just as strong. It’s the best team in the Big 12 at forcing turnovers, the Tide will make their share of errors.

What’s Going To Happen

These two are similar in a whole slew of ways, but Alabama does what it does a bit better than Oklahoma does what it does.

However, the Sooners are outstanding at home, they’ve been consistent, and they have the style to survive the barrage of offense that always comes from this Tide team.

Which current Big 12 college football programs are the greatest of all-time according to the UPI and USA Today Coaches final polls?

Using a ranking system taking all the AP final college football polls and assigning 25 points to the national champion, 24 for the final No. 2 team, 23 for the No. 3 team on down, it’s Oklahoma in a massive blowout, and Texas owning the No. 2 spot, but Baylor was able to move up to the No. 4 spot this year.

One note on this – this is made up of current Big 12 programs and factoring in their histories. Obviously many of these programs weren’t in the Big 12 – there wasn’t even a Big 12 for most of the rankings – starting in 1950.

Note, again, this is based on the CFN formula. This isn’t any official ranking coming from USA TODAY or the Coaches Poll.

Oklahoma (9-4) vs Texas (11-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners are on a three-game winning streak because they’re hitting their shots. They’re hitting from the outside – the threes are dropping – they’re getting to the basket, and they’re getting to the free throw line.

For this Sooner team, it’s about hitting at last 40% of its shots, and it’s blowing past that lately. When it makes 42% from the field or more it’s 8-1, with the only loss coming to Xavier early in the season when the Musketeers were crazy-hot from three.

However …

Why Texas Will Win

The Texas defense allows teams to shoot just 39% from the field with the No. 1 D in the Big 12 in field goal percentage.

It forces missed shots, it attacks everything on the boards, and it doesn’t allow second chance points. Oklahoma is okay at rebuilding – but not amazing – and it’s not necessarily consistent from the field. Even more than that, the Sooners are freakishly mediocre on the road.

This three-game winning streak was all at home. It’s 7-1 in its last eight games at home, and 1-3 on the season on the road with that only win coming way back in early December.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas has lost two games. They were both close, and they were both losses for one specific reason – free throws.

Oklahoma is fantastic on the free throw line, and Texas is a wee bit flaky. However, all the Longhorns have to do is hit more than half of their attempts. Their two of their three worst free throw shooting games of the year were …

The 68-64 loss to Villanova, and the 79-77 loss to Texas Tech. The other was in the blowout win over Kansas State, so they have to get better on the line fast.

They’ll hit over 60% and the defense will take care of the rest.

The pre-spring version of the College Football News 2021 rankings with a first look at all the Big 12 teams.

[jwplayer Ws7U1wOs]

Big 12 Rankings: 2021 Pre-Spring

1. Oklahoma Sooners

Why To Be Happy: The Sooners missed out on the College Football Playoff in 2020, but they’ve got the talent in place to not only make a run to the show but to do some damage, too. QB Spencer Rattler got his year of experience out of the way, the receiving corps is LOADED, and the program transformed itself into a defensive power that should be a killer again.

What To Work On: The improvements of 2020 were more than just about the emergence of two players, but it’s no coincidence that OU went from great to phenomenal once RB Rhamondre Stevenson and DE Ronnie Perkins returned after missing the first few games. They’re off to the NFL along with just enough key players – not to mention a few good backups transferring – to be annoying.

Bottom Line: Winning is never boring, but this year’s Sooner team has the upside to take another Big 12 Championship with one of Lincoln Riley’s strongest teams yet. Start with setting the expectations there, and hope the momentum from the end of 2020 can carry though into a huge 2021 on the way to the tournament.

2. Texas Longhorns

Why To Be Happy: Steve Sarkisian has a whole lot of stuff in the cupboard left over from the Tom Herman era. Sam Ehlinger is gone after what seems like 19 years as the starting QB, but Casey Thompson got the base all fired up with his second half in the bowl win over Colorado. Add in RB Bijan Robinson, an O line that should be fantastic even without Samuel Cosmi, and Sark should do wonders with the attack. The D is LOADED, too.

What To Work On: Is Thompson really ready to be a superstar? Can the Texas secondary start slowing down the better passing teams? The overall talent level is good enough to at least get to the Big 12 Championship, but the expectations are going to be sky high right away because …

Bottom Line: It’s not like Texas was that far off last year. The honeymoon for Sarkisian ends in about 30 seconds considering the young offensive talent he has to work with. WR Brandon Schooler is coming in from Arizona, and don’t be surprised if a whole slew of guys in the transfer portal are starting to take a bigger look at Austin to play in this offense.

[lawrence-related id=526963]

3. Iowa State Cyclones

Why To Be Happy: QB Brock Purdy is returning. RB Breece Hall is back. TE Charlie Kolar isn’t bolting early. OT Sean Foster is still around. EVERYONE – or, almost everyone – is expected to be back on the offense that was so sharp and so strong when it had all the parts together. The defensive side should be a killer again, too, helped by the return of S Greg Eisworth and LB Mike Rose, but …

What To Work On: DE JaQuan Bailey is off to the NFL. Not everyone is staying, and losing one of the team’s leaders and best pass rushers isn’t a plus. That’s nitpicking, though, considering how much talent is coming back, and that’s going to be the big problem, because …

Bottom Line: It’s going to be a seven-month media gush-fest over this team, but Oklahoma is better than it was in 2020, Texas is better, and the rest of the Big 12 should be a bit improved, too. The expectations are going to be through the roof, and rightly so. Just getting to the Big 12 Championship this time around will feel like a disappointment if the Cyclones don’t win.

4. TCU Horned Frogs

Why To Be Happy: Max Duggan. The Horned Frogs have one of the Big 12’s best and most exciting quarterbacks who’s going into his junior year. The O might lost TE Pro Wells, and OT TJ Storment is in the transfer portal, but everyone else on offense is expected to be back, and most of the defense returns, but …

What To Work On: The Horned Frogs lose three star playmakers from the defensive side. LB Garret Wallow is gone from the middle of the D, Thorpe winner Trevon Moehrig and fellow safety Ar’Darius Washington have both taken off for the NFL.

Bottom Line: Don’t sleep on the Horned Frogs. They got hot as 2020 went on with five wins in the final six, and now they return loaded on both sides of the ball. Throw in the addition of DE Kenny Turnier from UCF and OT Obinna Eze from Memphis, and some good pieces are coming in.

5. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Why To Be Happy: There’s still a whole lot of talent returning. Just enough is back to keep the production going, starting with QB Spencer Sanders and with more future stars at receiver to replace the departures. The defensive side might be taking a hit, but most of the starting front six should be back, and four of the top five defensive backs are expected to return.

What To Work On: That receiving corps has young talent, but it doesn’t help to lose Tylan Wallace and Dillon Stoner. Chuba Hubbard might not have exploded last year, but he’s an NFL running back who’s gone, too. The defensive side loses leader and tackling machine Amen Ogbongbemiga from the linebacking corps, CB Rodarius Williams, and DT Cameron Murray.

Bottom Line: The Cowboys will be shoved aside in most of the preseason predictions, but they’re going to be good enough and strong enough on the lines to hold up until all the skill parts come together. There’s no reason not to shoot for a Big 12 Championship appearance.

Kansas (10-4) vs Oklahoma (8-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks were able to win the first meeting a few weeks ago by clamping defensively holding the Sooners to a season-low 59 points. It wasn’t a pretty performance by either side, but KU was able to hit a little more on the inside.

It’s almost all about rebounding and controlling the interior. The Jayhawks lead the Big 12 in rebounds and rebounding margin, but they’ve been outworked in key moments over the last few games on the boards and lost to Oklahoma State and Baylor. The loss to Texas a few weeks ago came when Kansas was -13 on the boards.

Oklahoma isn’t a horrible rebounding team, but if this gets into another slugfest, it’s not going to get that extra chance.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

It’s been a struggle over the last few games for Kansas. The shooting from the outside hasn’t been bad, but the defense hasn’t been good enough from three.

The Sooners have to shoot well – it’s not a hard formula. They can’t and won’t win the battle on the boards, and they’re not going to get a whole slew of second chances – they haven’t come up with double-digit offensive rebounds in any of the last five games. Four of the last five Kansas opponents have hit well over 40% from three – OU has to do that.

What’s Going To Happen

The Sooners have only lost once at home and Kansas is on its fourth road game in the last five.

The Jayhawks are overdue to ramp up the defensive intensity – and get a little luck – but Oklahoma won’t turn the ball over enough to give up a slew of transition points and they’ll be just sharp enough from the outside to survive another fight between the two.

Oklahoma 55 Florida 20. The 10 ten things you need to know about the Oklahoma win over Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

[jwplayer xu1I0TQw]

Oklahoma 55 Florida 20: Goodyear Cotton Bowl

10. Several things can be true at once here.

Yes, Florida was missing way too many of its top players. Yes, it’s almost impossible to just Next Man Up it when you’re replacing too many key parts. Yes, teams that lose the SEC Championship normally don’t get up for the bowl game after getting their hearts ripped out – going 2-4 in the last six bowl games. Yes, Florida didn’t have any real answers after making a good-fight mini-comeback early on, and yes, they really, really, really weren’t the team that was so strong throughout the 2020 regular season.

And …

9. Yes, it can be true that Oklahoma is very, very good right now.

It’s a different team than it was at the beginning of the season. It’s sharper, it took advantage of the opportunity, and it did what a good team is supposed to do in a situation like this and win and win big. It’s not Oklahoma’s fault that a bunch of Florida players didn’t want to play in this.

8. One game like this isn’t going to change anything, but …

The College Football Playoff needs to be expanded so it includes all Power Five conference champions. Yeah, yeah, yeah, again, all of those things about Florida are true, but as sharp as the Sooners were and the way they played, it’s not crazy to think they could do some damage in a bigger sort of tournament.

7. This is why the voting needs to be done after the bowls.

Kyle Trask had a marvelous season, it wasn’t his fault the top four receivers were gone, and there wasn’t anything he could do in a game like this, but he’s a finalist, and he wins 16-of-28 for 158 yards and three interceptions with no touchdown passes.

6. The Florida coaching staff tried.

It got quirky, it threw a bunch of things at the wall to try fixing the glitch, and Emory Jones at least gave Gator fans hope. He only hit 8-of-16 passes, but he tied for the team lead with 60 rushing yards on 11 carries. He made the game interesting in the rotation.

5. Misleading fun fact from this – it’s Lincoln Riley’s first bowl win.

It’s not fair to rip him in any way for being 0-3 in bowl games before this when those three were in the College Football Playoff, but there’s something to be said for winning the final game of a season. Again, give Oklahoma and Riley credit here. If the other side isn’t as strong as it should be, then win 55-20.

4. There’s no dogging Dan Mullen here.

It’ll be easy to hammer on defensive coordinator Todd Grantham after a rough season and with a defensive performance like this, but this was an impossible situation for the entire Florida program to deal with. This wasn’t some normal bowl game. You’re not going to beat the Big 12 champs with that sort of firepower when you’re missing so much talent. However, these types of losses stick to SEC coaches. SEC fan bases are able to use logic and reason to a point, but 55-20 is 55-20.

3. Spencer Rattler was just okay, and it was more than enough.

He’ll be one of the early favorites for the 2021 Heisman – Oklahoma has gone too long without a quarterback being in the mix for the thing – and in a game like this, not throwing a pick or making any big mistakes was enough. That’s being light with the praise, though – he completed 14-of-23 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for 40 yards and a touchdown.

He was good, but his supporting cast was awesome.

2. Oklahoma was a different team with Rhamondre Stevenson.

The big, fast running back tore off 186 yards and a touchdown averaging over ten yards per carry. Marcus Major ran for 110 yards and a score, and the ground game pounded out 435 yards and three touchdowns averaging 11 yards per carry.

Three different Sooners caught touchdown passes, there were big plays after big plays, and it could’ve been a whole lot worse with just enough misfires to have kept this from getting even uglier earlier.

1. The bowl opt-out problem is a … problem

This year is obviously weirder than all others, but it’s also going to be the norm for these New Year’s Six bowl games that – come on, we’re all adults here – are mostly exhibitions. They’re fun, and they’re a huge deal for the teams, the players, and the fan bases, but there’s a reason why so many players with NFL talent skip out on them.

The Gators guys who opted out almost certainly play if this is some sort of a playoff game.

It’s okay. In a strange way, it’s actually better for Florida to get its young guys some meaningful work and more live game film to start working on spring ball. But something has to be fixed.

The lower-tier bowls normally won’t have the top teams with the top players – one or two guys might opt out, but not enough to make the game bad – and the NFL types aren’t going to skip the College Football Playoff. The New Year’s Six bowls, though, are going to have more and more of what we got in the Cotton.

Even so, 1,205 yards of total offense, a ton of big plays, and an entertaining show for a 55-20 blowout – the 2020 Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic was worth the watch.
