Iowa State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

The defense continues to be fantastic, and it’s by a mile.

Iowa State leads the Big 12 in total defense allowing just 284 yards per game – Baylor is No. 2 allowing 355.

Oklahoma State is dead last allowing 466 yards per game – 182 more than Iowa State and 30 more than the second-worst D. That’s been fine, but the offense that was able to overcome the problems went in the tank.

The O got shut out in a strange loss to Kansas State, and couldn’t get going until it was way too late in the 37-16 loss to Kansas last week.

The Iowa State defense isn’t what you want to face when everything is struggling. However …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Turnovers have been among the biggest issues lately with nine in the last three games. For all of the great things the Iowa State defense does, it doesn’t force takeaways with just five in the last games.

No, the offense isn’t working in a puzzling power outage, but if the Cowboys can get anything going, Iowa State can’t keep up.

The Cyclone offense worked fine against West Virginia, and it should be able to put up 400 yards on the Cowboy D, but the pop isn’t there.

Oklahoma State might not do enough on defense, but it’s great on third downs and it’s able to get into the backfield and come up with big stops. If it can just get off the field and not let Iowa State dictate the tempo, everything should be fine. But …

What’s Going To Happen

The Oklahoma State offense has to work.

The team is 5-0 at home, but Texas is the only team it faced that’s likely to go bowling. It’s 1-3 on the road, and that appears to be a big deal for the offense, too.

The five best Oklahoma State yardage days this year came at home, the four worst were on the road. Iowa State’s defense is good enough to hold up and hang around, but being back in Stillwater will help.

There won’t be four turnovers like there were against Kansas last week.

Oklahoma State vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Kansas State needs the offense to rise up and rock, but how healthy are the quarterbacks?

Adrian Martinez was banged up right away in the 38-28 loss to TCU. Will Howard was okay – he got hurt, too – but the offense wasn’t quite the same.

Oklahoma State’s defense is having its problems keeping points off the board, but it’s still among the best in the country on third downs, it’s okay against the run, and the plays behind the line are there to stop the Wildcat offense before it gets going.

The big problem has been the pass defense giving up a Big 12-worst 304 yards per game, but that’s not how K-State rolls. It’s not that it can’t throw; it would prefer to rumble on the ground.

Combine that with the problems the Wildcat O has on third downs, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Oklahoma State defense is having a few issues against good ground games, too.

TCU ran for 224 against the Cowboys and won, Texas ran for 204 yards and almost pulled it off last week, and now Kansas State has to rely on RB Deuce Vaughn as much as possible.

Underutilized over the last two weeks with just 22 carries, the game plan has to make sure he gets the ball at least that many times after the way Bijan Robinson of Texas was able to produce last week against the Cowboys.

If Vaughn can get close to 140 yards and a score – and take a pass 41 yards for a touchdown – like Robinson did, the rest of the parts should work.

Kansas State should control the clock for at least 35 minutes, the ground game should hit 200 yards, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Oklahoma State passing game be consistent and can Spencer Sanders hit more than half of his passes?

The Cowboys are usually able to find ways to come up with wins in wild shootouts, but the defense that was so strong last year and has so many positives has to be far better.

Kansas State’s offense will control the clock at home, the defense should come up with two takeaways – the secondary needs to create a key interception in the second half – and the running game will rock.

Oklahoma State’s offense will be a wee bit better.

The last team with the ball wins. Once again, Oklahoma State will find a way.

Texas vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense isn’t getting enough consistency from the passing game.

The big yards are there, and the points are coming – more on that in a moment – but Spencer Sanders didn’t half of his passes over the last few weeks and now might be out after playing through a shoulder injury.

The Cowboys are good enough to beat anyone and everyone on the slate, but the ground game is struggling to get to four yards per carry. With so many concerns about the quarterback situation, the running game has to get the chains moving, and that’s not a given.

Texas showed last week against Iowa State that it can win if the offense isn’t rolling, the defense has been terrific against the run against everyone but Alabama – no one else has come close to four yards per pop – and even when the passing game isn’t bombing away at least it’s hitting its throws.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The defense might have allowed too many yards over the last few games – 1,037 yards and 74 points against Texas Tech and TCU – but it’s still very good in a whole slew of ways.

It’s nowhere near the killer D of last season, but the pass rush is still special and the third down stops are there to potentially hold serve enough to survive.

The offense is finding a way.

It hasn’t been good enough over the last few weeks, but it still managed to score 81 points against the Red Raiders and Horned Frogs because the downfield throws are there. The O will take its shots over and over again pressing the Texas secondary that allowed 250 yards or more in four of the last five games.

Of course …

What’s Going To Happen

Is Sanders able to go, and if so, how effective will he be?

He’s tough as nails and will do anything it takes to get out there, but he’s very, very questionable. Gunnar Gundy can throw, but there’s a big problem if 3 isn’t going.

Assuming Sanders is going to tough it out and play, Oklahoma State needs the defense to rise up and come up with a big performance, and it’ll dial up the pressure even more than normal.

The Texas offensive line has been good in pass protection, though, and the defensive front will be too good against the run.

This is all with the Sanders situation so questionable, but the Cowboys will hang around enough to at least have a shot to pull this off late. The Longhorns will hold on.

Oklahoma State vs TCU Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Shhhhhhhhhh, Oklahoma State is 5-0.

In a Big 12 full of big storylines – the rise of Kansas, the fall of Oklahoma, Texas being “back” – Oklahoma State has very, very quietly gone about its business on the way to another strong start to a season.

All it has done was beat an Arizona State team that was supposed to be solid, got by defending Big 12 champion Baylor on the road, and survived a shootout with Texas Tech.

And all five wins so far were by double-digits.

The defense might not be the killer it was last year, but the pass rush is the best in the Big 12, no one in the nation is generating more tackles for loss, and the run D isn’t allowing much of anything.

Combine that with a lack of penalties and turnovers, and an offense that’s consistent and balanced, and it’s all working. The Cowboys are second in the Big 12 in scoring, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why TCU Will Win

TCU is first.

Under Sonny Dykes the offense keeps on chugging along averaging 530 yards and 46 points per game. There’s speed, explosiveness, and one of the nation’s most efficient passing attacks that keeps on rolling.

Oklahoma State might be playing defense at an elite level, but Baylor and Texas Tech were both able to bomb away on a secondary that’s giving up a league-worst 304 yards per game and now gets to meet a red-hot Max Duggan.

The veteran quarterback didn’t start the season as the main man for the offense, but no quarterback has been hotter over a four game stretch with close to 1,300 yards, 14 touchdown passes, one pick, and 204 rushing yards with three scores.

He’ll get pressured by the Cowboy defensive front, but he’ll get enough time to work. The Horned Frogs have the speed and athleticism to keep the explosion going, and the defense has the ability generate pressure of its own and come up with few takeaways.

But …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma State keeps on coming.

Kansas and Oklahoma put up more rushing yards than the Cowboys do, but TCU will have to deal with more power than it did against those two.

This will be a wild back-and-forth fight with each of the offenses coming up with big plays and lots of home runs, but Oklahoma State’s run defense will hold up a wee bit better in the second half.

Get ready for one of the best Big 12 games of the year, and don’t be shocked if they meet again again with the championship on the line.
