Ohio vs Bowling Green Game Preview

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The Bowling Green offense isn’t exactly lighting it up, but it was able to beat Buffalo by running well, the passing game was solid before crashing the last two weeks, and it all needs time to operate – and it’ll get it.

Ohio’s defense does absolutely nothing in the backfield on a regular basis.

The lack of pressure generally means a lack of forced mistakes. The Bobcat defense doesn’t come up with enough takeaways to matter, and for all of its problems, the Bowling Green offense hasn’t been all that bad at ball security – at least lately.

The Falcons have turned it over just twice in the last two games, and they’re 3-2 when forcing multiple takeaways. But …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has turned it over more than once in just one of its last seven games.

It took way too long to get here, but the team is playing a whole lot better over the second half of the season. The Toledo loss last week hurt, but before that the previous five games were all decided by eight points or fewer.

The passing game has been good, the offense has been balanced, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Bowling Green will put up a good fight – again, Ohio games are close – but there isn’t enough of a downfield passing game to make a difference, and the O will stall way too often.

After the way the season started, 4-8 won’t seem so awful for the Bobcats.

Toledo vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

Toledo is bowl eligible with a win and would keep MAC East hopes alive – at least for a day.

The Rockets are rolling offensively with close to 1,200 yards of total O over the last two weeks, rolling up an almost perfect balance to beat Bowling Green last week.

The running game has been terrific all year, the offense is playing the best it has all season, and the defense continues to be the best in the league even after getting ripped up by Eastern Michigan a few weeks ago.

Ohio needs to be perfect to win this, but it doesn’t force turnovers, and Toledo leads the nation in fewest giveaways, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has finally turned it on, but it’s too late.

The team couldn’t win close games, ensured a losing season, and then it rocked back with two nice wins over Miami University and Eastern Michigan with an improved passing game and a big ground attack that’s cranking up enough big plays to matter.

For all of the positives with Toledo, it’s 5-5 for a reason.

Either the running game stalls, or the pass defense crashes in a loss to Eastern Michigan, or the run defense doesn’t work against Northern Illinois – there are too many issues.

The O line allows too many plays in the backfield, there are a bazillion penalties, and it’s a struggle to keep the chains moving. Ohio has to run well, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Toledo run defense has been terrific – for the most part.

Can the Rockets finally come up with a little bit of consistency? It hasn’t been easy to win close games, but four of the five losses were by three points or fewer.

Ohio is playing strong, though, and it’ll come up with one more big performance as it finishes up with a nice thorn-in-the-side win at home.

Ohio vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Has Ohio finally figured it out?

It’s a lost season for a totally underwhelming team, but it pushed Central Michigan, Buffalo, and Kent State hard before finally breaking through with a win over Miami University.

The team is still playing hard, the passing game is finally starting to work, and the defense …

The defense is along for the ride, and it was able to hold up just enough late last week.

Eastern Michigan’s defense doesn’t do much of anything against the run, there isn’t enough pressure in the backfield, and the offensive line isn’t anything special. The Bobcats should be able to hold up on the offensive front and control the tempo a wee bit, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Ohio’s defense doesn’t hold up against anyone.

It got bombed on by Miami University, it got ran on by Kent State, and it’s been way too inconsistent overall and bad at getting off the field. Eastern Michigan’s offense isn’t consistent and it can’t run, but it owns third downs with a passing attack that kicked it all into high gear.

Ben Bryant is turning into the best quarterback in the MAC – or at least in the discussion – with his third 300-yard day in five games. He’s been accurate, he’s hitting the deep passes, and the passing game should roll at will on an Ohio defense that doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush.

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan has already secured bowl eligibility, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

A whole slew of MAC teams will get to six wins and there won’t be enough spots. The Eagles have to keep picking up wins all while staying alive in the MAC West race.

Nothing Eastern Michigan ever does it all that easy, and the defense will give up enough points to make the offensive side keep having to work, but the Eagles will make it three straight wins with yet another impressive performance from the passing game.

Miami University vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks are on a roll – and just in time.

They’re deep in the mix for the MAC East title – it’s relatively smooth sailing until what should be the game for the division at Kent State to close out the regular season – and they’ve figured out how to win good battles.

They’re on a run of three wins in the last four games, the passing game has been consistent, and they’re getting enough from the defensive and the offensive front to overcome a few problems.

They don’t turn the ball over, they hit the big pass plays, and they’re able to control games with their style, even though they don’t dominate the time of possession battle.

Ohio turns the ball over a tun, the defense has been a mess – especially against the run – and there won’t be enough of a pass rush to matter.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio has played a whole lot better than its 1-7 record.

It might be one of the top under-the-radar disappointments of 2021, but they’re still battling hard. Ever since beating Akron, they’ve suffered gut punch after gut punch in three straight tough losses.

The offense, though, is doing a nice job. It’s not consistent in nay way, but Miami doesn’t have the type of offense that’s going to come out and put 50 on the board. The Bobcats should be able to keep this close throughout, if not take over if the ground attack is working.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Miami keep Ohio from throwing well?

The RedHawks aren’t allowing anything on the ground over the last month, and Ohio is coming off a 308-yard passing day from Kurtis Rourke.

Miami keeps playing tight games and finds ways to win. Ohio keeps playing tight games and manages to lose. That’s about to flip in Athens in a quirky Tuesday night game.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Ohio vs Buffalo Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

At least the team has been more competitive.

It’s been a disastrous season considering the hope was for a MAC title run, but the Bobcats easily got by Akron on the road and pushed Central Michigan in a tough loss. The O ran all over the Zips and threw well against the Chippewas – it should be able to grind a bit on a UB D that gave up 200 rushing yards or more in four of the last five games.

Defensively, the secondary should be okay. Buffalo will get yards through the air, but it doesn’t do much down the field and it only has two touchdown passes since the opener against Wagner.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Buffalo Will Win

Ohio is having a hard time against the run, and the deep group of UB backs should go off.

The Bobcats have the third-worst run defense in the country, giving up over 300 yards to Louisiana (fine) and Northwestern (not fine) and getting hammered by just about everyone else.

Akron is the only team that didn’t run all that well, coming up with 112 yards in a season-best day by the Bobcats.

UB just hit Kent State for over 300 yards and should be able to get to 200.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams have been a stunning disappointment.

Buffalo losing to Nebraska and Coastal Carolina wasn’t a big deal, but starting 0-2 in the MAC with losses to Western Michigan and Kent State hurts.

It starts here with the offense running and running some more. The good Bull pass rush doing just enough against a good Ohio offensive front to own third downs.

Central Michigan vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

So where has it gone so wrong for Ohio?

The running game finally got it going against Akron last week, but the passing attack has sputtered and the defense hasn’t done much of anything to come up with key stops.

Central Michigan’s defense has been terrific on third downs, and the offense is good enough running the ball to control the game.

The Chippewas are 2-0 when hitting the 200-yard mark – Ohio is the worst in the MAC against the run allowing 249 yards per game.

But …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Ohio Will Win

Was the Akron game when everything starts to turn?

The Ohio offense just wasn’t itself over the first month, and last week the offensive line finally took over.  It’s been a plus for a team that’s had a whole lot of problems, but now it’s starting to come together.

Central Michigan has a big problem with the better passing teams, and it has a bigger problem with the teams that can get into the backfield. Ohio’s pass rush should have one of its best games yet, but …

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The issues with the Ohio run defense will be on display.

Central Michigan won’t get too crazy, but it’ll run well, spread it out a bit and keep the chains moving with the short passing game, and it’ll control the game by having the ball for close to 35 minutes.

Ohio vs Akron Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Is anything going right in this disastrous season?

It’s been a stunning dud, but the offensive line hasn’t been too bad at keeping teams out of the backfield, and the on the other side the pass defense hasn’t been too awful. But for Ohio, it’s really about playing a team like Akron that’s having almost as many issues.

The Akron offensive front is having a nightmare of a time keeping defenses out of the backfield, there are too many mistakes, and the D can’t come up with any stops on third downs.

But …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Akron Will Win

Ohio really, really can’t seem to do anything right.

Akron at least got walloped by Ohio State and Auburn. Ohio couldn’t do much against Northwestern and Syracuse.

There’s still a long, long way to go for the Zip program that’s taking baby steps, but at least the offense can slow things down and control the clock just enough to matter. Ohio doesn’t have the offense to blow up when it has its chances, but …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Come on, Ohio. Enough.

Frank Solich was a great head coach for the program, but this team shouldn’t have gone into the tank just because the guy retired.

The offense needs two good scoring drives to break the dam, and it’ll get that in InfoCision.

Akron might be improving, but it’s going to be totally miserable on third downs on both sides of the ball. Ohio will be just slightly miserable.

Northwestern vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Ohio is having a rough time.

This was supposed to be a team good enough to win the MAC – and it still could be – with many believing it would start the season with a home win over Syracuse. That didn’t happen against the Orange, the program suffered the indignity of dropping a game to an FCS team – Duquesne – and last week it got ripped apart by Louisiana.

So what’s working? The offensive line isn’t allowing a whole lot in the backfield, there aren’t a lot of mistakes, and the talent is still there for head man Tim Alban to work with.

Meanwhile, Northwestern has been awful, too.

Oh sure, it won a game against Indiana State – yippee – but the defense has been a disaster, the offense doesn’t have any pop, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Northwestern Will Win

No, Ohio has been really awful.

The line play has been abysmal on both sides. The offensive side can’t generate anything for the ground game, the defensive front can’t get into the backfield, and just nothing seems to be going right. The team has yet to catch – or create – and sort of a break.

Northwestern seemed like it was tired of being bad at football midway through last week’s loss to Duke. The offense started to play with some pace, Andrew Marty threw a few touchdown passes after stepping in, and …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Someone has to win this.

Both of these teams might be a lot better in a hurry, but both have to find a ground game that works – and neither one will.

Northwestern will move the ball a wee bit better and it’ll get some semblance of a pass rush against the struggling Ohio front. This won’t be the week the Bobcats figure it all out.
