RUMOR: former SEC quarterback visiting Ohio State

RUMOR: former SEC quarterback visiting Ohio State #GoBucks

The transfer portal madness has just begun, and the Ohio State Buckeyes will no doubt heat up on that trail now that their season has officially come to a close.

Ohio State added Ja’Had Carter, a safety from Syracuse, as well as a kicker from the Mid-American Conference, and a long snapper from Arizona State. But they are by no means lighting up that area of recruiting.

We saw the Buckeyes make a push for a few offensive linemen, a tight end, and some defensive backs. These are obvious weaknesses that need to be addressed this offseason, but I never would have expected some quarterback action to enter my news feed.

Rumor has it former Auburn quarterback, T.J. Finley, is in Columbus, Ohio, and visiting the Ohio State campus. Finley shared his location on social media, so for all we know he could be visiting in a manner completely unrelated to football, but the classic eyeball emojis used in the post have fans wondering.

Finley started the 2022 season as the starter for Auburn after taking over for Bo Nix during the 2021 season, but due to an injury and inconsistent play did not live up to expectations. Finley has had an interesting college career, originally enrolling at LSU in 2020 and starting as a true freshman due to injuries to Myles Brennan. Finley showcased a potentially high ceiling but elected to transfer during the spring of 2021 and landed at Auburn.

It is extremely hard for me to envision the Buckeyes having any interest in Finley. His college career has been disappointing, and I don’t see him as a better option than either Kyle McCord or Devin Brown. It is understandable for there to be a drop-off from C.J. Stroud to whoever is next in line, but Finley seems like a nose-dive.

An early look at Ohio State football’s 2023 schedule

A way-too-early look at each Ohio State football game for 2023. #GoBucks

If you are like me, you’ve gone through about five different instances from the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and asked the questions “what if,” and “how” on several occasions. Ohio State had the game won against Georgia but fell just short because of a litany of bad breaks and one missed field goal. As a result, the Buckeyes’ season came to an end after two-straight losses.

But fear not. The 2023 season will be here before you know it and there’s a better-than-good chance that Ohio State will be a preseason top-five team once again. Another run toward a Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff appearance should be in the scarlet and gray cards.

In fact, it feels like a good time to look ahead to the OSU football schedule for 2023 and provide an early narrative of each game as we start the slow build toward next season at the Ohio State football factory.

Brice Sensabaugh recognized with third straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week award

We might be at the point where we’re starting to realize that Sensabaugh is a one-and-done talent. #GoBucks

This is becoming routine.

For the third-straight week, Ohio State freshman Brice Sensabaugh has been named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week. The 6-foot, 6-inch, 235-pound forward out of Orlando led the Buckeyes in scoring over the last two games. Against Alabama A&M at home on December 29, Sensabaugh poured in 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Then, on the road in Evanston, he scored 16 of his18 points in the second half to go with eight boards in a key conference road win against Northwestern.

Sensabaugh has really started to figure things out in his first year transitioning to the college game. He has a body that is ready for Big Ten play and can score from multiple spots on the floor. He is leading Ohio State in scoring so far this season with 15.9 per game, which is good for third-most among all freshmen in the country.

As impressive as it sounds to win the Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, Sensabaugh joins two other Buckeyes that have done the same. Jared Sullinger had two different stretches during the 2010-2011 season, and D’Angelo Russell completed the same thing during the 2014-2015 season.

Noah Ruggles’ mom says he takes full responsibility for loss, thanks Buckeye Nation

Noah Ruggles’ mom took to Twitter to thank Buckeye Nation. Love it and we should all thank the Ruggles family for sharing Noah with the program. #GoBucks

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl was one for the ages, at least if you were a Georgia fan. The Buckeyes controlled most of the game and seemed to have it in hand before a fourth-quarter Georgia comeback. The outcome was in doubt until a missed field goal in the final seconds by OSU kicker Noah Ruggles that would have won the game.

The end result was a 42-41 thriller that Ohio State really should have won. And while the life of a field goal kicker can be a love/hate relationship with a fan base, there’s no denying what Noah Ruggles has meant for this Ohio State program. Until that kick, Ruggles had missed only two field goals all season and had already drilled a clutch 48-yarder to put the Buckeyes up by six points late in the game.

However, he would be called upon last time, and we found out he was indeed human as the pressure of the moment seemed to get to him as 2022 literally came to a close on New Year’s Eve.

Ruggles was noticeably distraught after the game and didn’t have any comments to provide, but that didn’t stop his mom, Jackie, from speaking on his behalf in a very classy manner. She was quick to point out how Ruggles felt and the gratitude that she, Noah, and the family have for Buckeye Nation.

We all know there are a minority of loud, obnoxious fans that fired criticism at Ruggles, but this Ohio State program was better with him a part of it the last couple of years. It’s Buckeye Nation that should be thanking him and his family for sharing him in a scarlet and gray uniform.

He leaves the program as the most accurate kicker in Ohio State history, and that should be remembered more than the last time his toe hit the leather on Saturday night.

Ohio State lands former Syracuse safety from transfer portal

Ohio State lands former Syracuse safety in transfer portal #GoBucks

It is no secret that the Ohio State defensive backfield was less than spectacular this season. In a scheme so reliant on athletic and versatile safety play it is vital that the backend of the defense improves for the 2023 season.

The Buckeyes have attempted to snag a few studs in the transfer portal and have fallen short, but Ohio State finally made a splash and grabbed a stud from the ACC in former Syracuse safety, Ja’Had Carter. The former Orange defensive back entered his name in the portal on December 15th after leading Syracuse in turnovers this season.

Carter had a breakout third year for the Orange and made a splash specifically against Clemson where he was responsible for two turnovers. Carter ended the season with six pass deflections, three interceptions, and one fumble recovery. Carter will be almost guaranteed to see some action considering his experienced resume of seeing action in 31 career games.

Thank you, C.J. Stroud

C.J. Stroud may not get the recognition he deserves, but he’s been one of the best to ever wear the scarlet and gray. #GoBucks

It’s not easy to play football at the Division I level.

It’s even harder to play quarterback in a Power Five conference.

Then there is the pressure cooker that is being the starting quarterback at The Ohio State University. And C.J. Stroud handled it all with class and dignity.

Players come to Ohio State knowing they will be under the proverbial microscope. The Buckeyes were the only show in town for more than a century and so the passion runs deep. Sometimes at a nauseating level.

Stroud came to Ohio State as a four-star prospect and the No. 2 rated pro-style quarterback in the 2020 class according to 247Sports composite rankings. So the expectations were already high for the California native. Adding to that pressure, Stroud was following some legends and record-setting quarterbacks at OSU: Justin Fields, Dwayne Haskins and J.T. Barrett.

Those are big shoes to fill and sometimes the immense pressure to perform can overwhelm athletes and send them into the fetal position. But Stroud seemed to embrace the pressure, all while being one of the most humble human beings on the planet.

Stroud always seemed to take more heat than the rest of the team, but he never put the blame elsewhere. When Ohio State lost to Oregon in his second start, the many coaches sitting on couches at home were already calling for his head. Funny thing, Stroud did everything he could to keep the team in the game throwing for almost 500 yards and four touchdowns but got little help from the defense. Oh … and he was playing through a shoulder injury.

He took heat in the loss to Michigan last year and then again this season when he said that “one game does not define this team.”

Ohio State fans know The Game is a defining moment, and I believe Stroud knows that as well. But I also get what he’s saying. There is more to life than one game. And if your entire life is thrown off kilter for the next 365 days because 20-year-olds lost a football game, it might be time for some self-reflection.

Most people have no idea what it’s like on the other side. To hear how awful you are, to have disrespectful things said about your family, and the absolute worst in humanity … keyboard warriors sending out death threats. I get it, players get paid now, you paid for that ticket, you have the right to boo … blah, blah, blah. Some fans, and I know it is a minority, need to grow up.

Most people would crumble facing a fraction of that kind of adversity, but Stroud kept his head held high and just kept coming back for more. He gave us his absolute best, day in and day out.

And in what was likely his final performance in scarlet and gray, Stroud left his heart on the field. Without his top two running backs and his top receiver entering The Peach Bowl, he lost his top tight end and receiver during the game. Despite those losses, the young man almost single-handedly willed the Buckeyes to a win with his arm and his legs.

But it wasn’t meant to be as the kick sailed wide left. And through the disappointment, he was gracious in defeat and the 21-year-old spoke with a class that many professionals lack in the postgame interview.

Stroud owns 17 school records at Ohio State. The 0-2 record against the Wolverines will stick out like a sore thumb, but that will not be the only thing we remember. Stroud has represented Ohio State well and given us some of the most memorable moments in OSU football history.

For that, we say thank you, C.J. Strou,d for taking the criticism (sometimes unnecessarily) and still giving Buckeye Nation your all in every single practice, unseen video session, and every game. You made our Saturday afternoons in the fall for the last two years something special.

Ohio State’s Ryan Day and C.J. Stroud react to Chick-fil-A heartbreaker

Hear everything Ryan Day and C.J. Stroud said after the heartbreaking loss in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. #GoBucks

It’s been a rough, emotional five weeks for the Ohio State football team. First came the meltdown in the second half against Michigan on Thanksgiving weekend, and now this. The Buckeyes had the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs on the ropes in Atlanta and let them off the hook.

You have to give credit to the SEC champions, but anytime you have a 14-point lead three times in a game, you expect to nail it down.

Nevertheless, it was a valiant effort by an Ohio State team not many gave a chance to hang with Georgia. There are no moral victories, and we’re sure every player in the locker room afterward was devastated, but their head coach and quarterback met with the media to face the music.

Catch everything Ryan Day and C.J. Stroud said after the heartbreaking loss to Georgia in the postgame press conference thanks to the fine folks at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl as uploaded to the Buckeyes Wire YouTube Channel.

Ohio State heads into the offseason, and it’ll be interesting to see who goes to the NFL, who stays, what happens with the transfer portal and name, image and likeness deals, and what the team looks like next season.

We will, of course, be all over all of that.

WATCH: What Kirby Smart and Stetson Bennett said about Ohio State after the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and quarterback Stetson Bennett had nothing but praise for Ohio State after the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. #GoBucks

An all-time classic Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl went on the wrong side of the ledger for Ohio State on Saturday against Georgia. Still, if you are a Buckeye fan, you had to be proud of the effort and feel at least a little bit better than how you felt after the Michigan debacle.

To be fair, the Georgia fan base and media didn’t think this would be much of a game, and there’s no doubt they know the Bulldogs dodged a huge bullet against a team that played well enough to knock them off their perch. In fact, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was quick to commend and compliment Ohio State, and so was quarterback Stetson Bennett.

Both met with the media after the game to discuss what happened on the field of Mercedes-Benz Stadium and, among other subjects, talked about what a performance Ohio State had and how difficult the game was. They showed nothing but respect for the other sideline.

Catch everything they said thanks to the fine folks at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl as uploaded to our Buckeyes Wire YouTube Channel.

Ohio State will go into the offseason looking to beat Michigan and get back to the College Football Playoff.

Best photos of Ohio State vs. Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

Check out some of the best photos of Ohio State vs. Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. #GoBucks #CFAPeach Bowl

It was a classic, but not one Ohio State football fans are going to keep on their DVRs. The Buckeyes led against Georgia for almost the entire game, but let a 14-point lead evaporate three times and missed a field goal as time expired that would have won a thrilling and dramatic Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal.

In the end, there are a lot of what-ifs and if onlys at the end of a 42-41 heartbreaker. Even though Buckeye Nation is defeated for the second time in a little more than a month, we have some of the best photos of the action to share with you in a scrolling gallery.

Enjoy the images and the thoughts of regret for the missed opportunity in Atlanta.

Twitter reacts to Ohio State loss to Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

Twitter reacts to Ohio State loss #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes lost to the Georgia Bulldogs, 42-41, in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Ohio State played much better than most experts expected, but with multiple leads throughout the game — some being by double digits — it is a bit deflating to think of what might have been. Ohio State had a few ups and downs, but there is no doubt one of the biggest obstacles was the Marvin Harrison Jr. injury.

C.J. Stroud showed how great this offense could be when he uses his legs, and it is upsetting to think of what this team could have accomplished with a healthy roster and a running Stroud against Michigan, but let’s dive into the latest reactions from Twitter.
