5 reasons Ohio State will beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl

Do you feel good about this one? #GoBucks

It’s been fun already but there’s still work to do. Ohio State has looked absolutely fantastic so far in the first-ever, 12-team College Football Playoff, good enough to take home the national title.

It won’t be easy though — winning a national championship never is. After dismantling Tennessee and No. 1 Oregon, the Buckeyes are now faced with playing Texas in its own backyard at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. As with any matchup, there are obstacles, unknowns, and breaks that may need to go OSU’s way in order to win and advance. If that happens, Ohio State will be playing for a national title in the next game.

We like to dissect each matchup the OSU team has during the football season and we’re doing the same here. We like where this Buckeye team is and think they’ll come out on top.

Here are five reasons we think Ohio State beats Texas on Friday night in Big D.

Momentum

This team is playing well, very well and it has everything to do with learning from what went wrong against Michigan and sticking with a new mindset. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and head coach Ryan Day are going to swing for the fences with playmakers on the outside, and that’s exactly what should be happening.

The result has been magical on the offensive end of the ball and look for that to continue. There’s a lot of confidence being exuded from quarterback Will Howard and the offensive playmakers and it’s going to be hard to stop if Kelly is dialing up plays that get all of that skill in open space and over the top.

The Defense

Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images

Bot Ohio State and Texas have great defenses, but Ohio State has the better of the two. When you go on the road — which is what this game is going to feel like — that travels well. The Longhorns have a solid offense but if you like one team’s chances of shutting the other one down more consistently, it’s Ohio State and its defense rather than what Texas can do.

Now, that doesn’t mean the game plan will unfold like we all think, but if OSU’s defense is playing like it has and Texas is doing what it has over the last part of the season, that’s a big advantage for OSU.

Jeremiah Smith

USA TODA SMG

Sometimes you just have to have the dude to win games and at this point, is there a football player that’s going to cause more issues than the freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith? He has been an absolute terror over the last two games and you can bet he’ll be a big part of the game plan in this one as well.

Even if Texas doubles him (they will), he’ll still have his moments, and when covered, it’ll open up things for Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate, and backs and tight ends coming open. He’s going to be a problem and it’ll continue to open up the offense.

Will Howard

USA TODAY SMG

Will Howard has been a different quarterback during the College Football Playoff. He has been really good this season as it is, but he has played at a different level against Tennessee and Oregon.

Give all the credit to Jeremiah Smith and the wide receivers for getting open, but someone has to deliver the ball in the right spots and on-time, and Howard is doing that and more. He’s thrown for over 300 yards in the first two contests of the playoff, and is playing with a ton of confidence and ability. If he plays like he has so far, you feel pretty good about him outdueling the Texas side.

Ohio against the world

This team is playing with a chip on its shoulder after how the season ended and look for that to continue. The team feels like its Ohio State against everyone else and that’s the mindset that has had the team playing fast and loose. There was something missing with this team, keeping it from hitting the level everyone thought it would, but that seems to be in play now.

The Buckeyes have been able to get out to quick starts and jump on very good and athletic teams because of bottling all of that up and coming out with their hair on fire. Look for that to continue against Texas. If it does, it’s lights out in Jerry’s World.

Job isn’t finished #GoBucks

Fresh off a Rose Bowl win against Oregon, Ohio State is prepping for the next step in the journey. A showdown in the Lone Star State with the Texas Longhorns awaits in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.  It might be easy to relax after dismantling the No. 1 team in America in the “Granddaddy of Them All,” but this Buckeye team seems to understand the job’s not done.

To quote Ryan Day “It’s Ohio against the world. It’s always been Ohio against the world. It’ll always be Ohio against the world.” That’s the mentality this team has. The Buckeyes are hotter than any team in the country right now because they are keeping that edge.

In the latest game trailer, the players understand exactly what it means to represent the great state of Ohio and what it means to those from Ohio. Give it a watch as the Buckeyes have their eyes set on the next game and no further. And be sure to take a look at our preview and prediction to get you ready for the Texas showdown.

Ohio State running back enters transfer portal

Ohio State running back enters transfer portal #GoBucks

Ohio State football is a couple of days away from taking on the Texas Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl for the right to move on to the College Football Playoff National Championship game, but that hasn’t slowed down the transfer portal news.

Current Buckeyes are still evaluating their futures and one freshman has just opted to find opportunity elsewhere. Sam Williams-Dixon was a homegrown three-star athlete in the class of 2024 from Pickerington North High School in Columbus, Ohio. The running back was able to earn seven carries for 53 yards in the three games he appeared this season.

This one stings a bit more as it always hurts when an Ohio kid looks to move on and Williams-Dixon has enough talent to eventually grow into a special talent for Ohio State. He has also elected to not remain with the team throughout the College Football Playoff.

We wish him good luck!

LOOK. What Quinn Ewers said about his time at Ohio State.

Quinn Ewers spent some time with the Ohio State Buckeyes several years ago, and he has no regrets about making that decision.

Ohio State football is one of the most prestigious places to play in the country, and it creates an almost unparalleled atmosphere for its games at Ohio Stadium.

While making it a fun experience for recruits, the Buckeyes also have some of the top names at the NFL level, often opening the door for an avenue to get to the highest level in the sport.

That’s likely part of what initially attracted former five-star recruit Quinn Ewers to Ohio State. Ewers originally was the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2021 and then was the No. 2 prospect in the transfer portal when he opted to leave Ohio State after his first season in Columbus.

Originally from Texas, the Longhorns seemed like a perfect fit, but he has no regrets about that initial decision

“I learned a lot while I was there,” Ewers said via The Columbus Dispatch’s Bill Rabinowitz. “Coach Day and C.J. (Stroud) and that whole room was awesome to be around. I’m super thankful for that time I got to spend there. I don’t regret any decision I made on going (there).”

The Buckeyes and Longhorns will square off in the Cotton Bowl on Friday, so Ewers will face his former head coach on one of the brightest stages in college football.

Let’s just say all parties should be ready for what will undoubtedly be a terrific battle between two of the best teams in the country.

CBS Sports says Ohio State vs. Notre Dame would be best CFP title Game

CBS Sports ranked their four best potential matchups in the CFP National Championship Game, and Ohio State vs. Notre Dame sat at No. 1.

Ohio State is one of the premier college football programs in the country, and it commands the attention of almost every five-star prospect at the high school level.

The Buckeyes have been notorious for being among the highest-ranked teams in the country over the last several seasons and have had almost unmatched success in the last decade.

They are continuing that trend in the College Football Playoff this season and will face off against the Texas Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl on Friday. Penn State will face Notre Dame in the other CFP semifinal.

CBS Sports is hoping that the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish are the teams that square off in Atlanta for all of the confetti.

“As mentioned, both teams are in the top four in wins all-time. It’s two programs that are synonymous with the sport of college football and its history,” CBS columnist Tom Fornelli wrote. “While the modern era of the game has been dominated by teams from the Southeast, the early days of the sport were run by the Midwest, and these two were at the vanguard.”

Ohio State, which finished No. 10 in the AP Poll last season, beat the Fighting Irish on the road 17-14 on Sept. 23, 2023, the most recent battle between the two sides.

With neither in the top four to start the CFP, if it were a Buckeyes vs. Fighting Irish finale, the expansion to 12 teams should be seen as a huge success. That said, let’s hope that’s what Buckeyes fans are bracing for come Friday night.

Kirk Herbstreit pushes back on ESPN’s SEC narrative, calls Ohio State part of dream four

Ohio State football is part of the final four teams in the College Football Playoff, and Kirk Herbstreit is loving every minute of it.

The College Football Playoff is having its first stab at a 12-team format, and there have been mixed opinions so far. One thing is for certain though; Ohio State football is among the best four teams in the country.

Despite finishing 6th in the CFP rankings, the Buckeyes have gone on to blow out the No. 7-ranked Tennessee Volunteers and annihilated the No. 1-ranked Oregon Ducks as well.

Along with Texas, Notre Dame and Penn State, they made up what analyst Kirk Herbstreit calls an ideal final four. He actually said it talking from the viewpoint of ESPN, noting the popularity of these programs and what they bring to the table.

He’s certainly not wrong either. The Buckeyes-Ducks game had over 21 million views, and Ohio State’s battle with Texas in Arlington could blast even that out of the waters.

Let’s just say not many are disappointed that they won’t be having to watch Georgia and Alabama, at least that’s what Herbstreit is suggesting.

RUMOR: Ohio State football pursuing Georgia linebacker

RUMOR: Ohio State football pursuing Georgia linebacker #GoBucks

Ohio State football is a couple of days away from taking on the Texas Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl for the right to move on to the College Football Playoff National Championship game, but the coaching staff is also working on making additions through the transfer portal and rumors are swirling about a former four-star edge rusher.

Damon Wilson II is a former four-star edge rusher form the state of Florida in the class of 2023 who committed and played the last two seasons for the Georgia Bulldogs. He has recently announced he will be looking to play elsewhere through the transfer portal.

Perhaps he hasn’t cracked that elite potential yet with only 22 tackles and three sacks this past season, but with two seasons of eligibility left a coaching staff would be very happy to snag an elite athlete who stands at 6-foot, 4-inches and 250 pounds. Rumors are swirling that the Buckeyes are making a push to get him on the roster for 2025.

Ohio State basketball vs. Oregon: How to watch, stream the game

Bucks vs. Ducks #GoBucks

It’s a Rose Bowl rematch,  only this time on the hardwood. The No. 15 Oregon Ducks are heading to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes. Ohio State is coming off an 89-88 double-overtime win at Minnesota.

Oregon should be a much tougher opponent. The Ducks come into the contest with a 13-2 record. They have a balanced offensive attack but are led by 7-foot senior center, Nate Bittle, who averages 13.4 points per game. Size inside is something the OSU has struggled with all season.

Ohio State is also offering 20 percent off tickets after the football team beat Oregon by 20 points in the Rose Bowl. The offer is online only.
