Maryland vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

Just how real is Ohio State after finally winning a game again?

It beat Northwestern on New Year’s Day, took down Iowa a few weeks later, and that was it until last weekend’s terrific performance against Illinois.

That’s because it made everything.

It hit 54% from the field, was good on the free throw line, and Illinois couldn’t hit water if it fell out of a boat.

Maryland’s defense isn’t special, but the team has been able to win even when things aren’t going quite right. In this, the production is will come from the takeaways.

Ohio State is a turnover machine, Maryland should be able to keep the mistakes to a minimum, and the easy points should be there on the move.

Why Ohio State Will Win

It’s not like the Buckeyes have been awful.

The fight has been there, but the consistent scoring hasn’t. Nothing was happening in the loss to Michigan State, the threes were a rumor in the loss to Northwestern, and …

The team can shoot. It doesn’t move the ball around well enough, and it doesn’t manufacture points from the defense, but it can make baskets. If it can just carry over a little bit of the momentum from the Illinois win …

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State should be able to generate enough big things to come up with back-to-back wins for the first time in 2023, but it HAS to shoot the lights out.

The team is 2-13 when making fewer than 46% of its shots, and that’s where Maryland’s problems on the road kick in.

Even when the defense has been great away from home the wins aren’t there. The team is 1-7 in Big Ten play with the lone win coming against Minnesota.

It won’t be anything pretty, but the Buckeyes will take it.

Ohio State vs Michigan Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes have to start hitting from three early on.

They’ve been struggling lately overall – to be nice about it – partly because they can’t overcome a lack of good shooting from the outside by manufacturing points on the move. They just don’t take the ball away enough and they just don’t do anything on the fast break.

Michigan doesn’t force takeaways and it’s even worse at running up the floor to generate transition points. It’s also mediocre from three.

No, threes don’t mean everything, but the O makes them when it takes them. Ohio State is 10-2 when it hits 46% or better from three and 1-9 when it doesn’t.

That’s a problem, because …

Why Michigan Will Win

Kentucky, Arizona State, Virginia. Those are the three teams that were able to connect on 46% or better from the outside against the Wolverines.

It’s not quite that easy, though. They’re 0-8 when allowing teams to hit 35% or better from three, but overall the defense is solid at getting out on the three point shooters.

Ohio State isn’t one dimensional – it’s hitting 46% overall from the field – but take away that outside element and things change.

Michigan might not have the normal scoring pop, but it has the ability to hang with the Buckeyes on the boards, it’s not going to give up easy points with turnovers, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State is scuffling.

Michigan might not be playing all that well, but it’s at least solid at home. Ohio State is having a hard time on the road going 1-6 in true road games.

It’s Ohio State vs Michigan. The intensity will be there – duh – and there will be a few mood and momentum swings, but the Michigan defense will be just a wee bit stronger overall and being +5ish in turnover margin will matter.

5. Ohio State had it, but …

Yeah, of course, it’s the brutal reality in football. Kick goes one way, it’s a disastrous collapse after being up 14 going into fourth. Kick goes another way, and the Buckeyes pull off the huge win and probably go win the national title.

Ask Scott Norwood and the 1990s Buffalo Bills what one dumb kick means.

The ugly sports side of social media is all over Ohio State kicker Noah Ruggles for badly missing the game-winning field goal attempt – it would’ve been a career long – but 1) there were plenty of chances to put this away, 2) Ohio State didn’t do it and left the door open for 3) the best team in college football over the last two years to pull this off.

The play calling at the very end wasn’t exactly stellar. Ruggles has good range, but that was a 50-yard try in the most pressure-packed of circumstances. The Buckeyes had the ball at the 31 with 19 seconds to play and the time outs to try a few runs to do something to get it closer.

One run lost yards, two incomplete passes, 50-yard try. However, Ruggles nailed a 48-yarder on the team’s previous drive. That was a problem, too.

Ohio State went up six and not ten, partially because of an ill-timed sack on 2nd-and-5 to screw it all up.

The defense didn’t exactly help, either, allowing 18 points in the fourth quarter as Stetson Bennett and company marched at will.

But that’s all nitpicking the finer portions of the game that had a gajillion things go both ways.

The kid missed the kick. That’s the sport.

Georgia vs Ohio State College Football Playoff Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl 5 Things To Know

Why Georgia will win the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, why Ohio State will win
College Football Playoff Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Georgia hasn’t exactly made greatness boring, but it’s not like this is a star-studded superpower with a slew of household names. It’s a rock-solid team that’s good at blocking and tackling and going about its business as it rolls towards what might just be a second straight national title. There’s one key difference from the 2021 version, though.

This one might run the table.

2022 Georgia had a perfect storm of positives to get here. Years of amazing recruiting built up the talent level, and it all matured enough to create a true Next Man Up system with future NFL stars replacing the NFL stars who left off of last year’s national champion team.

Combine that with a relatively down year by Alabama – and not having to face the Tide – a 44-year-old starting quarterback who knows what he’s doing (Stetson Bennett is actually 25), and all those new starters looking to prove the greatness of this team compared to last year, and this might be an even stronger run.

However …

CFN Experts CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

You let them in the door. The Buckeyes were out. All it would’ve taken was USC’s Caleb Williams not hurting his hamstring, or Clemson and/or Tennessee not gacking the moment against South Carolina, or Alabama’s Jahmyr Gibbs making the late grab against Tennessee, or any one of a number of things that could’ve happened to put someone else in the No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff.

But they’re in. They’re in the tournament at the 4, just like 2019 Alabama, and just like 2014 Ohio State – both of those teams won two games and the national title.

The team rolled through the season despite a slew of injuries, and all was set up to be the No. 2 seed. All it had to do was beat Michigan, take down Purdue in the Big Ten Championship, and it would’ve played TCU not Georgia in the CFP first round.

You have to win two no matter what, so Ohio State might as well get the Georgia game out of the way now.

There are 3.5 teams going with the same NFL talent level – Georgia, Alabama, the USC offense, and Ohio State. Even with a few key guys out – RB TreyVeon Henderson is out with a foot injury, WR Jaxson Smith-Njigba is nursing his injured hamstring as he gets ready for the NFL – the guys are still there to hang position for position with the defending national champs.

Ohio State has lived in the biggest bowls for the last 30 years. In the eight-year playoff era, it’s 7-3 in bowl games with the three losses all in the CFP. It won an epic Rose Bowl over Utah last year, lost the College Football Playoff National Championship to Alabama in 2020, and it’s in the Peach for first time ever.

Georgia has been a bowl god under Kirby Smart. The program has gone 9-3 over the last 12 bowls going back to the Mark Richt era. It won its last four – including two last season – with the last two losses the national title agains Alabama to end the 2017 season and in a tough Sugar loss to Texas in 2018. This is the program’s seventh Peach appearance, and …

This is just the second time these two have met. Georgia beat Ohio State 21-14 in the 1992 Citrus Bowl, but that’s been it for these two powerhouses.

Between playoff games and close battles that defined the narrative for the participating teams, almost all of the last several Peach Bowls have mattered.

Last year’s Michigan State win over Pitt was entertaining at the end, the Georgia win over Cincinnati in the 2020 season was good, the 2019 version – LSU blowing out Oklahoma – was interesting theater, and UCF made a whole program around the win over Auburn at the end of the 2017 season.

The first two Peach Bowls as part of the College Football Playoff were lousy. This one shouldn’t be.

Why Ohio State Will Win

CJ Stroud got back on track after the 21-7 windstorm win against Northwestern.

He got time to work, threw for almost 300 yards with five scores against Indiana, and it all came together in an easy win. There shouldn’t be problems against the Maryland defense, either, but it’s the other side of the ball that should dominate.

It was just Indiana – it’s struggling to do much of anything consistently well – but Ohio State made it six times in seven games allowing fewer than 300 yards of total offense.

The seventh-best defense in the country has enough of a pass rush to get through a struggling Maryland offensive line, the secondary should be able to keep Taulia Tagovailoa’s struggles going, and it should all tie in with a balanced day from the offense.

Maryland is getting ripped up on the ground allowing over 200 yards in each of the last three games, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Maryland Will Win

Does Ohio State have any running backs left?

Star back TreyVeon Henderson is trying to get back from a foot injury, and Miyan Williams suffered a leg injury last week against Indiana. Dallan Hayden was able to step in and run for over 100 yards, and it’s Ohio State – there are other options – but it’s still not a plus to not have the headliners.

This is a focus game. Maryland might not be playing all that well lately, but it’s bowl eligible, it’s the final home game of the year, and it can let it rip.

Meanwhile, the other side is this close from getting its shot at redemption against Michigan next week.

Maryland has the offensive weapons to be dangerous. Ohio State’s defense hasn’t faced anyone with a high-powered offense – Penn State is as close as it gets – and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State will take care of business.

It can lose this and still get into the College Football Playoff with two straight wins. That’s not going to happen, though.

It might take a half to get up to speed, but after a few early Maryland scores the other side will start to settle in, the offensive line will take over, and the big pass plays Tagovailoa will connect on early will dry up.

Ohio State vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

Will there be a massive wind storm like Ohio State had to deal with in the 21-7 win over Northwestern last week in Evanston? No, but there’s supposed to be a decent breeze.

The Hoosiers will take anything they can get.

Ohio State goes in spurts. It took a while to put away Penn State, there were a few too many stalls throughout the last few weeks, and even with the bad weather it took too much work to get by a miserable Northwestern.

Even though the only thing anyone could do was run – and everyone knew what was coming – the Ohio State defense still gave up over 200 yards to the Wildcat ground game.

But …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Ohio State Will Win

Indiana isn’t running for 200 yards. It probably isn’t even getting to 70.

The offense can’t get anything moving – it hasn’t come close to 100 yards since the Week 3 win over WKU – and the passing attack isn’t steady enough to make up for it.

Indiana can throw. It was able to push Maryland with a good day, and throwing for 200 yards is likely, but there’s not enough steady firepower.

Ohio State doesn’t have to worry about any sort of steady pressure from the Hoosier defensive front, and it doesn’t have to worry about its defense getting gassed.

Indiana is dead last in the nation in time of possession.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State will open it up a bit, just because.

The Northeastern game was frustrating because of the weather, and now it’s time to let the offense go off.

Next week is a trip to Maryland and then it’s on against Michigan. This is the fun home game, and the team will play like it with a big start to all but end this in the first quarter.
