Notre Dame offers 4-Star LB Mondon from Georgia

On Thursday evening, Notre Dame extended in offer to class of ’21 LB Smael Mondon.

Recruiting never sleeps and the Irish are at it again, this time offering Georgia linebacker Smael Mondon Jr, from Paulding High School Thursday evening. The four star outside linebacker stands six-foot-three and weighs 210 pounds.

The Irish currently do not have any commits at the position in their 2021 class, and if they were to add Mondon it would be a huge coup for Brian Kelly and Clark Lea.

Mondon also plays running back for the Paulding Patriots, and after his junior year, earned region 7AAAAA Athlete/All-Purpose Player of the Year. A linebacker that can run like Mondon is always in high demand and taking one look at his highlight reel he is quite an impressive prospect. Mondon also excels on special teams, lining up for his Patriots on the edge and blocking multiple field goal attempts. Mondon reads and reacts well in the passing game as well, with his speed shining in that area once again.

Mondon has a very impressive offer list, which include Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and many others. He is a national recruit and if the Irish are able to pull him out from the South, it would be a fantastic start for the linebacker position in the ā€™21 class.

Mondon is the type of difference maker that helps win championships, and if Notre Dame expects to compete and win those kinds of games, getting a commit from Mondon will go a long way helping attain that goal.

Notre Dame Football: Three Star WR Xavier Watts Signs with Irish

Notre Dame beat out in-state Nebraska who Notre Dame coaches at one point thought were getting a commitment from Watts.Ā

Notre Dame went to the heartland and took a three-star wide reciever right out of Nebraska, Iowa and Iowa State’s backyard when they landed Xavier Watts on National Signing Day.

Watts checks in as the second rated prospect this year from the state of Nebraska, but its worth noting that he’s ranked 75th among receivers nationally, per 247Sports.

The 6-1 Watts had 1072 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 11 games as a high school senior at Burke High School in Omaha, Nebraska.Ā  Notre Dame beat out in-state Nebraska who Notre Dame coaches at one point thought were getting a commitment from Watts.

Watts will enroll at Notre Dame in January and be on campus for spring practice.

Notre Dame Football: 5-Star RB Chris Tyree Signs with Irish

An easy way to see how big of signing a player can be is by looking at other schools to offer them and as Tyree’s list includes but is not limited to the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, its easy to see good of player he is.

Perhaps the biggest name of the day to sign a letter of intent for Notre Dame has officially done so as Chris Tyree is officially a member of Notre Dame’s 2020 recruiting haul.

Tyree is a speedy, shifty all-purpose back that comes with a five-star grade from 247Sports and ranked as the 25th highest player nationwide in this 2020 class.

An easy way to see how big of signing a player can be is by looking at other schools to offer them and as Tyree’s list includes but is not limited to the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, its easy to see good of player he is.

Running backs coach Lance Taylor and former offensive coordinator Chip Long hit a long home run with this signing.

Tyree enters Notre Dame as the most coveted recruit at running back since perhaps Julius Jones.Ā  It’s feels safe to say if you aren’t already familiar with his work that you’ll quickly become familiar with what the captain of the Under Armour All-American Game has to offer.

Tyree is scheduled to enroll in June of 2020.

You can find a fantastic write up on Tyree here.

2 Notre Dame players selected in Draft Wire’s 2020 NFL mock draft

Notre Dame stars Tommy Kraemer and Julian Okwara were both mocked within the first three rounds of Draft Wire’s latest 2020 NFL mock draft.

USA TODAY’s Draft Wire put together a three-round mock draft during Week 15 of the NFL season, and two Notre Dame players were projected to get selected.

First up was right guard Tommy Kraemer, who was mocked in the late second round (no. 63 overall) to the Baltimore Ravens.

Kraemer sprained his MCL and has not played in the final five games of the 2019 season. As of now, it is unclear if he will play in the Camping World Bowl. It’s also unclear if he will even declare for the NFL Draft, or if he will stay for a fifth season in South Bend.

If he does decide to go the professional route, landing in Baltimore with a chance to protect future MVP Lamar Jackson would certainly be desirable.

Next up is Julian Okwara, another injured Irish player who has played his final game of the season after suffering a broken fibula.

Okwara has seen his name pop up in the first round of a lot of draft boards, but this one has him all the way down in the third round, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs at no. 90 overall.

Okwara has all the potential in the world to be an elite pass rusher off the edge, and how he recovers from this injury will have a lot to do with his draft stock, and potential future earnings, in the NFL.

If you’re a fan of “The Profit” on CNBC, you’re aware of who Marcus Lemonis is.

The self-made billionaire takes over struggling family businesses, changes their ways of operations and helps them turn things around.

Lemonis is also the CEO of Camping World and been proud of his bowl game that Notre Dame appears headed for on December 28.

Who will Notre Dame play remains the question.

We went through the final expert projections earlier today but reached no ultimate conclusion, just that more people think Texas than anyone else and that the idea of Oklahoma State appears to have been eliminated.

Lemonis took to Twitter a short time and although he doesn’t have an answer, he seems to have a pretty good guess as to who will join Notre Dame in Orlando.

We’ll all know before the end of the afternoon but that’s what the CEO of Camping World is at least thinking.

Stay tuned, won’t be long now.

Notre Dame (9-2) vs. Stanford (4-7) Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Davis Mills has been fantastic, and it hasn’t mattered.

Stanford’s KJ Costello is an NFL starting quarterback talent, but he hasn’t been in one piece all season long. Mills was able to step in against Washington in early October and pull off the thriller, but Stanford has way too many problems now.

Mills threw for 504 yards against Washington State … and lost by 27.

He hit almost 75% of his throws for 290 yards against Cal last week … and lost.

Notre Dame’s secondary has gotten better and better as the season has gone on.

Forget the last two games against Navy and Boston College teams that don’t throw – they each threw for fewer than 80 yards – the Irish were able to keep everyone but Virginia’s Bryce Perkins and USC’s Kedon Slovis to under 190 yards.

The pass rush is good enough – even if it’s not consistent – and the rest of the defense has been dominant against mediocre.

Stanford’s offense is the working definition of mediocre with no ground game for the Irish to worry about.

It might be too late, but Notre Dame is playing as well right now as it has all season.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Stanford Will Win

Can controlling the clock matter if nothing else works quite right?

Stanford struggles in a whole slew of ways, but at least it’s doing it all slowly.

Notre Dame doesn’t seem to care about the time of possession battle, but as long as the Stanford defense isn’t allowing a slew of explosive plays, the game should be kept relatively low scoring in range for something quirky to happen.

The Cardinal defensive front is decent enough against the run to keep the Irish from busting out yards in chunks, and the secondary has generally avoided getting toasted by everyone who isn’t Washington State’s Anthony Gordon.

Stanford won’t beat itself, so win the turnover battle, capitalize on every opportunity, keep it close late and build up the overall confidence – like it did in the Washington game – and hope for Mills to go off.

What’s Going To Happen

Notre Dame is too sharp, too good, and playing too well right now.

Stanford’s offense isn’t doing enough, the Irish defense is stuffing everything, and even though it’ll be a low-scoring battle for a while.

The Cardinal offense will be stuffed time and again after keeping it close going into halftime, and then Ian Book and the Notre Dame passing game will open it up for an easy win.

After a 40-7 drubbing of Boston College on Senior Day, Notre Dame moved to 9-2 on the season with only Stanford remaining next weekend.

With only Oregon and Penn State losing ahead of the Irish, was it enough to move them up from the No. 15 spot they sat in last week?Ā  The latest Amway Coaches Poll Powered by USA Today is out and your answer is unfortunately, no.

Latest Amway Coaches Poll:

  1. LSU
  2. Ohio State
  3. Clemson
  4. Georgia
  5. Alabama
  6. Utah
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Florida
  9. Minnesota

  19. Boise State
  20. Iowa
  21. Oklahoma State
  22. Appalachian State
  23. Virginia Tech
  24. Navy
  25. Southern California

What might be the biggest takeaways here for Notre Dame isn’t that they didn’t move from 15, but that Virginia Tech, Navy and Southern California all are now ranked.

If that holds true with the College Football Playoff Committee who releases their rankings Tuesday night, Notre Dame having three wins over top 25 teams may be enough on the resume to lift them from their No. 16 ranking.

Notre Dame (8-2) vs. Boston College (5-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games,Ā sign up with BetMGM

Why Boston College Will Win

Start running, keep running, and hope it all keeps on working.

Boston College doesn’t do the Navy option thing – the Midshipmen took off for 281 yards last week in the loss – but it can certainly power away like Michigan was able to do for 303 yards and three scores back in Ann Arbor a few weeks ago.

AJ Dillon keeps on being AJ Dillon.

The big, bruising back has carried the offense that lost its passing game when Anthony Brown went down. He was held in check by Clemson, but he’s hit everyone else for well over 100 yards in each of the last seven games behind an offensive line that’s blasting away for the nation’s fifth-best ground game.

That’s the only way this works. BC has to own the clock, convert on third down chances – it’s hitting on 46% of its tries – and slow the game down a bit.

The Eagles don’t turn the ball over, they don’t beat themselves, and they don’t wear down, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Yeah, Dillon and the ground game might be amazing, but the Eagles aren’t able to do much when opposing passing attacks are hitting the big plays.

The BC secondary continues to have a really, really tough time against decent quarterbacks.

Ian Book has been a bit up-and-down with his passing throughout the year, but he was brilliant to close out the Virginia Tech win, threw for four scores against Duke, and last week was a sharp 16-of-22 or 305 yards and five scores.

He does have four picks in his last three games – and BC can take the ball away – but there’s absolutely no Eagle pass rush to worry about, and he’ll be able to bomb away at will.

BC has allowed a whopping ten yards or more per pass in three of its last I’ve games – all losses – and gave up 16 touchdown passes in its last six outings.

Book will bomb away, and …

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The Irish aren’t going to screw up enough.

Book interceptions over the previous weeks aside, the Irish just don’t make a whole lot of mistakes. The defense has been good enough to clean up the mess more often than not – it’s third in the nation in takeaways.

Dillon and the Eagles will be tough, they’ll stay in the game with a few big long drives, but it won’t be enough to overcome a pass defense that will once again be a major letdown.

Navy (7-1) vs. Notre Dame (7-2) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games,Ā sign up with BetMGM

What’s Going To Happen

Will Notre Dame be able to sell-out at the last moment to keep the 273-game streak that goes back to 1973 alive?

It needs to, considering these are two top 23 teams according to the College Football Playoff committee.

Start with this – can Notre Dame slow down the run?

It got hammered on by Michigan for over 300 rushing yards, but that was more about a power game in bad weather. Navy isnā€™t going to blast away. Other than that, the Irish run defense has been a rock after tightening up over the first few weeks. The line is doing a better job at getting into the backfield, and the linebacking corps is in place to clamp down on the outside when Malcolm Perry gets going.

The running back-who-plays-quarterback is past the 1,000-yard mark with five straight 100-yard games. Heā€™s also hitting the deep ball, averaging close to 24 yards per completion when heā€™s able to catch defenses cheating up.

The Navy running game is working at the highest level, but the Irish arenā€™t going to get popped in the interior, and expect several plays behind the line to force enough long third down plays to be a problem.

Ian Book and the Notre Dame offense will be more methodical than spectacular, but heā€™ll be just sharp enough and accurate enough to keep the Perry and company on the sidelines a bit. Navy will still dominate the time of possession battle, and itā€™ll push the Irish hard, but Book and the O will take over the fourth quarter with a few late scores to pull away and survive.
