Why Oklahoma Will Win

Did Nebraska’s players suddenly get better at football?

Out of all the issues in the Scott Frost era, the inability to generate a massive talent upgrade turned out to be the biggest failing.

This is hardly a bad team – you don’t lose that many close games without having guys who can play – but it’s still going to come down to the little things.

How many turnovers has Nebraska booted in the three games so far? Five. It didn’t give up any in the loss to Georgia Southern, but it made up for it with ten penalties and one of the program’s worst defensive performances of all-time in Memorial Stadium.

Oklahoma might not come up with the 575 yards and 45 points the Eagles generated, but so far it’s been good enough offensively.

The O hasn’t exactly pushed the envelope, but the defense is getting the job done with two great performances against UTEP and Kent State teams that might not be any good, but can move the chains – at least the Golden Flashes can.

Oh, by the way, Oklahoma has a grand total of zero turnovers so far.

Why Nebraska Will Win

Maybe the players are there.

At least offensively, Nebraska does have a few nice playmakers, the ground game hasn’t been an issue over the last two games, and when Texas transfer Casey Thompson is in a groove, the offense will move.

The Huskers are converting 60% of their third down tries.

Fine, so the defense is a concern, but the Oklahoma ground game couldn’t get going in the 33-3 win over Kent State, coming up with third down conversions has been a problem, and there are unnoticed parts that are working.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the defense.

It’s not like Oklahoma has gone totally conservative offensively under the new coaching staff, but it’s not taking any chances – partly because it hasn’t needed to so far.

It’s not going to have to do anything crazy in this, either.

The Huskers are giving it the old college try, but their secondary is getting picked clean, the offensive line isn’t generating a push, and the Oklahoma defensive line has been a terror in the backfield over the first two games.

Nebraska will come up humming in front of a jacked up crowd. Oklahoma will weather the storm, grind out two good first half scoring drives, and the defense will take care of the rest.

Nebraska vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

This is not your older brother’s Georgia Southern team.

New head coach Clay Helton wanted to change things up a bit, and while the running game will still play a big role, the passing attack is about to get going.

In came Buffalo transfer Kyle Vantrease, and at least for one week, everything clicked as he threw for 367 yards and four touchdowns in the blowout win over Morgan State.

Nebraska’s defense is far, far better, but it’s still shaky, it got pounded on by Northwestern’s ground game, and overall it took a little too long to put North Dakota away in a 38-17 win.

Georgia Southern will move the ball better than the Fighting Hawks did, and they ran for over five yards per carry.

Why Nebraska Will Win

Again, Nebraska might be struggling, but it’s not Morgan State.

If might be a tough go so far in the 1-1 start, but the Huskers found an explosive runner in Anthony Grant, QB Casey Thompson has been strong in spurts, and it has to keep being said, even though no one wants to hear it – it’s EARLY.

What’s Going To Happen

The Nebraska turnovers have to stop.

They were an issue against Northwestern, and the two against North Dakota didn’t help. The Huskers don’t have to be perfect, but they’re getting killed whenever there’s the slightest momentum shift.

Fortunately, controlling the game on the ground – and getting to Vantrease with the pass rush – should help take care of that.

Ohio State is going to be fantastic, and now it’s mad.

We got the Michigan curveball last year. It’s rebuilding, but it’s still going to be strong. Michigan State and Penn State are good, Wisconsin is really good, Iowa is Iowa, and others like Maryland and Nebraska should rise up and have good seasons.

Who can catch the Buckeyes?

More interesting will be a few strange twists and turns. Most of the solid teams can hang with or beat anyone else in the conference, and on the right day an Illinois or Northwestern or Rutgers should have the formula to pull off something fun.

There are two more years before USC and UCLA come aboard. That’s all anyone will be talking about, but until then, this season should be entertaining – at least outside of what OSU will probably do.

Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview 2022

By the way, the 2016 Nebraska team – two years before Scott Frost took over – went 9-4 and added to a run of nine straight bowl appearances.

At any other big-time program the guy who goes 15-29 in four years with four straight division finishes of fifth or worse would’ve been launched so hard.

Dan Mullen almost won the 2020 SEC Championship at Florida, came within a two-point conversion of maybe beating Alabama early last year, and then he had a bad month … gone.

Clay Helton lost to Stanford in early September, and USC deep-sixed its season to get rid of him and move on.

Michigan fans couldn’t try pushing Jim Harbaugh out the door hard enough before he pulled off that 2021 season, and Texas types had to be held back after Steve Sarkisian’s team melted down against Oklahoma and lost to Kansas.

College football coaches at huge programs don’t survive a few big losses, much less four years of them and a place like Nebraska.

And yet …

Keeping Scott Frost around to give him another shot makes total sense in a college football head coaching hiring and firing world gone mad.

The guy was a great offensive coordinator at Oregon, he took UCF to an unbeaten season, and he was the perfect fit at the perfect program at the perfect time when he got the dream gig.

Nebraska has been pumping quarters into this slot machine over and over and over again because there’s got to be a payoff coming. Worse yet, if it gets up from the chair now, it knows with 1000% certainty that the next team to sit down will hit the jackpot with one pull of the lever.

From the early problem of not finding an ill-timed penalty it didn’t like to commit, to turnover issues, to special teams gaffes, to being about as unclutch as a team can possibly be, Nebraska has itself to blame for most of this rough run. However, it also hasn’t had even the teeniest, tiniest, ittiest, bittiest semblance of good luck.

Yeah, sprinkles are for winners, but an unbelievable 20 of the 29 losses under Frost have been by eight points or fewer.

That leaves another nine losses under Frost when the Huskers got rolled – the program lost 12 games total from 1993 to 2001 – but you don’t lose to that many good teams in so many competitive games like they did last year and not think this whole thing might be really, really close to turning around.

Frost is changing things up from the coaching staff to the transfer portal to a general attitude of enough being enough.

He’s got a more talented starting 22, there’s enough experience to build around, and most importantly in all of this, he knows his team will battle – he could’ve lost his team several times over the last few years, and didn’t.

He could’ve lost this job several times over the last four years, and didn’t. For the all-too-patient Nebraska fans, this season should start to show why.

2022 Preseason CFN Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year

QB CJ Stroud, Soph. Ohio State

Try not to compare the 2022 Stroud to the 2021 version that put up astronomical numbers and would’ve won the Heisman in a walk if Ohio State got past Michigan and if Auburn’s Tank Bigsby had stayed in bounds late against Alabama.

Stroud rolled up over 4,400 yards with 44 touchdowns and six picks last year, hitting 72% of his passes along the way. He’s probably not going to do that again for one simple reason – he won’t have to. He had to keep bombing away at times with the Buckeye defense struggling to be its normal self.

As long as he keeps the completion percentage to around 70%, keeps the interceptions at a bare minimum, and hits his third down throws, he’ll be fine.

Of course, he’ll be better than fine, though.

2022 Preseason CFN Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jack Campbell, Sr. Iowa

The Iowa linebackers know how to tackle and tackle and tackle some more. Campbell and running mate Seth Benson should combine for over 250 tackles if everything goes right in what should be another big year for the Hawkeye D.

Campbell won’t be as disruptive as Wisconsin’s Nate Herbig, and he might not bring the value like several of the top linemen, but he’ll eat up everything again after leading the nation with 143 tackles with a fumble return for a score, two interceptions – taking one for a touchdown – and with 3.5 tackles for loss.
