Scottie Scheffler surprised at College Gameday with the Jack Nicklaus Award

A surprise turns into an emotional moment for the 2022 Masters champ.

When Scottie Scheffler returned to Austin to visit ESPN’s iconic College Gameday program, he thought he would be standing alongside the University of Texas men’s golf team as the Longhorns were honored for their 2022 National Championship. Scheffler, a Texas golf alumni, won the 2022 Masters tournament.

Things started as one would expect, with Gene Wojciechowski asking Scheffler for his Alabama-Texas prediction (which he decided would be a 35-28 Longhorn win, like a good alum). Then things got fun. Wojciechowski mentioned that Scheffler couldn’t bring the iconic green jacket with him on this trip, and said they had something else for him instead.

John Fields, the golf coach for UT, stepped forward with a shrouded item that would prove to be the Jack Nicklaus Award that goes to the PGA Tour Player of the Year. It was a very cool moment:

Scheffler was immediately overcome with emotion, but expressed his gratitude. With four wins, four top-five finishes, and 10 top-five finishes this season, it’s a well-deserved honor.

Now if only his football prediction would come true…

GAME NOTES (PDF): Weber State | Utah State

ODDS: N/A

SP+ PROJECTION: Utah State by 8.2

FEI PROJECTION: N/A

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: N/A

The Utah State Aggies didn’t have an especially good time of things in a road loss to Alabama last week, but the friendly confines of Maverik Stadium await on Saturday when they host the FCS Weber State Wildcats.

Jay Hill’s team is on a mission of their own, to re-establish themselves as serious contenders in the Big Sky Conference, so a walk in the park isn’t necessarily a given in this matchup between Beehive State foes. Here’s what Utah State can do to stamp out a potential upset bid by the Wildcats.

Three Keys to a utah State Victory

1. Get the offense back on track.

The Aggies offense had a slow start against the UConn Huskies in Week 0, in a similar fashion to what marked many of their early rallies in 2021, and then had no chance whatsoever against the elite Crimson Tide defense last Saturday, so it’s difficult to say with much certain whether Anthony Tucker’s unit has regressed from 2021 or simply hasn’t had much chance to find its footing two games in.

Regardless of the reality, there’s every expectation that Utah State should get back to moving the football more consistently, though the Weber State once again appears to have a top-notch defense of their own. The Wildcats had ten tackles for loss in their win last week, including 3.5 from strong safety Naseme Colvin, and three interceptions, including two by cornerback Maxwell Anderson, but there’s a big difference between shutting down a Division II offense and a FBS one. Logan Bonner shouldn’t be shy about attacking down the field, while Robert Briggs and Calvin Tyler Jr. will get a chance to bounce back from quiet performances against Alabama.

2. Stop the Wildcats passing game.

Alabama’s legion of top pass catchers were simply too much for the Aggies secondary to handle, but the good news is Weber State does not have a Traeshon Holden on their roster. Despite last week’s romp, quarterback Bronson Barron was merely okay against WOU, completing 16-of-28 passes for just 152 yards, the longest pass play going for 24 yards.

The Wildcats didn’t really need to stretch the field, but Utah State has a good enough secondary to keep them from doing so on Saturday. Tight end Hayden Meachem and wide receiver Ty MacPherson could do a little damage if they catch the Aggies napping, but Michael Anyanwu, Andre Grayson, and company should have a much easier time of things overall.

Utah State Football: First Look At The Weber State Wildcats

3. Cut back on the avoidable penalties.

One thing that Blake Anderson has certainly harped upon in practice this week is that Utah State didn’t help their own cause last week with 11 penalties against Alabama, totaling 110 yards. The vast majority of that came on defense, with a targeting penalty, a face mask penalty, two defensive holding calls, and a pass interference flub doing a lot of damage.

It ended up being the second-most flags of Anderson’s tenure to date, but the upside is that this hasn’t typically been an issue for the Aggies in the last year-plus, so a course correction with more discipline behind it is probably in order.

Prediction

The degree of difficulty has been all over the place for Utah State so far, but despite the fact WSU will probably be a tough out for many of its FCS peers this fall, the Aggies should be more than capable of holding serve at home and coming away with a victory.

Utah State 33, Weber State 20

After a rough opener in Corvallis, the Broncos traveled to Albuquerque for their Mountain West opener against the Lobos.  Hank Bachmeier returned under center to start the game, winning the freshly opened quarterback competition and recovering from being benched.

The recovery didn’t seem immediate though, with the Broncos struggling for most of the first quarter, trading punts with New Mexico for the first five possessions between them.  Bachmeier and the Broncos were finally able to get rolling with a 91-yard scoring drive, getting an 18-yard touchdown pass from Bachmeier to Latrell Caples at the start of the second quarter.

Adding a 48-yard field goal by Jonah Delmas pushed the Broncos out to a 10-0 lead. The second half showed some improvement with a running game that tallied 147 yards and found the endzone two more times. With over 300 total yards, the offense did well, but still somehow felt sluggish and predictable. It’s hard to tell how much of the improvement was due to the opponent as opposed to practice and scheme.

Defensively the Broncos came out firing on all cylinders, holding the Lobos to just 64 yards in the first half on 36 plays. The second half continued that trend as they allowed an additional 59 yards, but they did allow New Mexico into the endzone when they completed a 69-yard pass for a score. Led by Ezekiel Noa and George Tarlas, Boise State tallied six sacks and 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Lobo QB Miles Kendrick only missed three passes last week against Maine but could only manage to go 9 for 28 while being consistently pressured by the Broncos.

Special teams had a much better showing as well.  They did give up a kickoff return touchdown but were able to block a punt in the endzone for a touchdown, Delmas connected on his field goal attempt, and punter James Ferguson-Reynolds averaged 45.7 yards a punt (compared to 37.4 last week).

Keys to The Game:

The Broncos went 3 for 3.  The offense was a little slow out of the gate, but the defense definitely showed up on time, they Kept Kendrick in check, and they didn’t miss their chances to get points on the board.

Final Thoughts:

It was great to win and start the conference off at 1-0. The defense was impressive, and the offense showed improvement.  Having Bachmeier return as the starter was a good sign, but the struggle to be consistent on offense is still troublesome. With injuries along the line already piling up, it’s tough to imagine the offensive line taking a big leap forward. With a couple of weaker opponents coming up, this will be the best time to get it ironed out.

Player of the Game:

Freshman running back Ashton Jeanty had 99 total yards, including 72 rushing for the game. Jeanty was able to provide a spark in the second half that allowed the Broncos to hold onto the ball productively.’

Next up:

Next week the Broncos host the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks at Albertson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 1pm (MT) and will air on FS1.

Ranking the 6 coolest college football turnover celebration props, including a … slot machine

Some wild turnover celebration props in 2022. We ranked them.

Miami’s turnover chain is long gone, but the other turnover celebration props have taken over the college football world.

And some of them are WILD.

In recent years, we’ve seen some weird and wacky ones, but after the start of the 2022 season, it’s a good time to round them up and rank them by coolness.

What’s the definition of coolness here? I guess it’s how much I’d like to wield or wear or — in the case of one — play the turnover prop if I grabbed a fumble or interception.

So let’s dive into what we’ve seen so far on the sidelines in 2022:

Which Big Ten schools have never won a national championship in football?

Big Ten may not be a college football powerhouse nowadays, but it’s got a long history of greatness.

You might not think it now considering the conference’s recent history, but the Big Ten was quite the powerhouse back in the day.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were the last national championship winners to come out of the Big Ten back in 2014, with their most recent appearance in the title game coming in the 2020-21 season. Outside of Ohio State, however, only five other Big Ten teams have made it to the national championship game since 2000, a tough stretch for a proud conference.

While it may be difficult to predict the future, let us cast our minds back through history to take a look at which Big Ten teams have never won national championships and which ones have.

Which SEC schools have never won a national championship in football?

Not every SEC school has the same accolades as Alabama.

When you think of the SEC, your first thoughts probably stray toward Alabama. And why wouldn’t they? The Crimson Tide have won 16 football national championships in its lifetime, dominating the recent college football landscape.

The rest of the SEC has had its ups and downs over the years, but Georgia’s most recent championship has given the organization new life after falling to Alabama in the 2017-18 title game. The SEC, however, is quite a top heavy conference, as the highs are extremely high but the lows are quite low in return.

Here is how the SEC stacks up in national championships, starting with the schools that have yet to win one.

GAME NOTES (PDF): Oregon State Game Notes (PDF)  | Fresno State Game Notes (PDF)

ODDS: Oregon State -1

All eyes will be on Fresno as the Bulldogs host Oregon State. Two teams that are top 25 calibers facing off late night Saturday. Oregon State is coming off a statement opening win over Boise State 34-17. Bevers forced 5 turnovers and held Boise State to under 200 yards passing. The Oregon State defense was so good that Boise State made a switch at QB. Offensively they started hot, scoring 24 points in the first half and nearly running the ball for 200 yards. With one of the top offensive lines in the nation and a good passing game, this team can put points up at any time.

Fresno State is coming off a 35-7 win over Cal Poly. The Bulldogs kept a lot of the offense under wrap but may have a problem with the offensive line. Rotating nine guys in the line and giving up three sacks to an FCS school. A positive sign was the transfer WR from Cal Nikko Remigio who had a couple of highlight plays to go along with nine catches for 100 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Defensively the Bulldogs have to do a better job of closing out plays and keeping the QB in the pocket. Cal Poly QB Jaden Jones had 59 rushing yards and most of it came from extending plays and breaking out of the pocket. Some positives were the true freshman 17-year-old starting defensive tackle Gavriel Lightfoot recorded his first career sack. The transfer CB Cam Lockridge also had an impressive showing with three tackles and two pass breaks. A lot will be needed again from these two guys as they will have their hands full with a really good Oregon State team.

Oregon State vs. Fresno State: Get To Know The Beavers

A Battle in the trenches

Oregon State dominated the line on both sides of the ball last week and well the Bulldogs struggled last week. If Fresno State is going to have any success this week it starts in the trenches. Protect Haener and establish a run game. During the first drives in last week’s game, the Bulldog’s offense looked sharp. Good O-line play led to the offense opening up which led to six points every time. If the O-line can play better and be more physical the Bulldogs will find success offensively. They have skilled players to put points but you have to protect the quarterback for that to happen.

Defensively the Bulldogs faced a more mobile quarterback last week but that is no excuse for not finishing plays. Chance Nolan QB for the bevers isn’t the fast guy you will see but does enough to extend plays and keep the drive going. Fresno State has to do a better job keeping Nolan in the pocket and creating an uncomfortable pocket for him.  Can’t be happy with only getting one sack last week. I do believe Kevin Coyle will switch things up and make adjustments to get to the quarterback more.

Turnovers

The good news for the Bulldogs, they didn’t turn over the ball last week but didn’t get any takeaways either. Meanwhile, Oregon State created five turnovers but also turned the ball three times.

Last week Oregon State’s key to victory was winning the turnover battle. The Bulldogs are going to have to do that this week if they want to improve to 6-0 at home against the Beavers. We saw it last year when the Dogs were careless with the ball and the results weren’t good. Whoever can take care of the ball in this game will win this game.

Third down

Whichever team can convert third downs will be in a great position to win this game. Both teams have a great offense and both teams can put up points. I believe whichever team can stop third down conversions and whichever offense is on the field more will be set up for great success. Oregon State was 4-13 on third down last week. Fresno State was 5-10 on third down. This game could come down to a late conversion situation.

Prediction

This game is a toss-up. A lot is on the line for both teams. Expect a near sellout at Valley Children’s Stadium. I believe this game is going to come down to the wire and come down to who wins the turnover battle. The Red Wave gives the Bulldogs an extra boost and squeaks one out.

Fresno State 38, Oregon State 35
