Texas’ Steve Sarkisian wore some funky sunglasses vs. Alabama, and college football fans had jokes

College football fans had thoughts about Steve Sarkisian’s sunglasses.

Alabama and Texas entered halftime of Saturday’s matchup at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium tied, which was a bit of a surprise for college football fans — Longhorns fans aside, obviously — considering the Crimson Tide entered the game as 20.5-point favorites.

Just about no one expected this game to be 10-10 at halftime. But another element of Saturday’s contest that seemed to catch people off guard was Texas coach Steve Sarkisian’s sunglasses.

Burnt orange and seemingly rimless, Sarkisian’s glasses had a retro vibe to them. And when he removed them for his brief, halftime interview, there were super noticeable marks on the sides of his face, suggesting that they’re perhaps a tad too tight.

Sure, a handful of college football fans on Twitter liked Sarkisian’s look, but for the most part, fans had tons of jokes, some really roasting the shades.

Texas-Alabama played an even first half, which means lots of bettors lost money

Not a good start to the day for bettors.

It is College Football Saturday. It is Texas versus Alabama. It is… an incredibly down-bad day for college football bettors.

Don’t get me wrong, the battle in Austin has been a great college football game so far. Texas and ‘Bama are all even at the half. But Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide were supposed to be rolling right through Texas.

Alabama’s first-half line was initially -11.5, which was backed big time by the public prior to today’s game. And when I say “backed big time,” I may be underselling it.

According to Max Meyer of Caesars Sportsbook, the 11.5-point spread received almost a consensus backing from the public and eventually caused a 2.5-point bump in favor of the Crimson Tide.

As Alabama running back Jace McClellan ran one down the field for 81 yards and a score to put the Tide up by a touchdown, it appeared the line may have some life.

But the ‘Horns, without starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, responded with a score to tie things up at 10 before halftime.

Tough break for first-half bettors. Hopefully, it wasn’t their only play.

Snapdragon Stadium Review: A GREAT New Home For The Aztecs

Ignore the skeptics and hear from someone who was at the first game at Aztec football’s new home: Snapdragon Stadium is a game changer.

Snapdragon Stadium Review: A GREAT New Home For The Aztecs

The San Diego State Aztecs disappointed in their season opener, but Snapdragon Stadium ROCKS.

Temperatures peaked at 108 degrees and new concessions stands struggled, but this stadium will serve SDSU very well.

San Diego, CA – Saturday, September 3 was a memorable day for Aztec Nation as San Diego State football played its first game in a brand new venue. The home team could not claim victory and it was the hottest day on record ever in San Diego for an official football match, including the NFL’s Chargers, and while some concessions stands were not fully prepared to handle the crowd of 34,046 fans, a dynamite new venue is here to serve Aztecs football for many years to come if you look past the anomalies.

As an SDSU alum, a sports writer, and an Aztecs football and basketball superfan, I took it upon myself to cut through the national media’s headlines and provide a first-hand chronicle of the Snapdragon experience.

GAME ONE EXPERIENCE

Arriving at Snapdragon, my son Quinn and I reached Friar’s Road two-and-a-half hours before kickoff. We paid in advance online to park in the orange lot. Even arriving early, it took us 15 minutes from stadium entrance to the lot.

We parked and then entered the largest tailgate scene I’ve ever seen at an Aztecs event. Both the orange and yellow lots were fully packed with San Diego State tents, campers, flags, and fans. Aztec Nation was out in full force.

Walking through the orange lot and over to the yellow lot, we stopped by the Sons of Montezuma tailgate tent to visit founder, content director, and podcaster Matteo Ortiz as he hosted his live game day podcast, along with co-host Dan Morton. The crew gave out merchandise and distributed shirts, flags, and NIL gear to dedicated fans. I needed something to beat the heat, so Matteo handed me an AleSmith Aztec Ale in a S.O.M. koozie and we talked football. Sons of Montezuma is a growing, iconic part of the Aztec Nation, and Matteo’s podcasts are superb, often featuring insightful player interviews.

May be an image of 10 people, people standing and outdoors

Next, Quinn and I moved over to the festive Aztec Village just outside of the main entrance. DJs spun beats as affiliated companies held events for fans to enjoy, as well as food and drinks for everyone to sample. We visited the “Aztec Throne”, donning football helmets to do so, before entering the stadium entrance.

We entered the stadium quickly and easily with our electronic tickets. I won’t disclose what I paid for my section 110, Row 5 tickets, but I definitely did my part to help cover the $310,000,000 stadium bill. Inside, huge masses sought relief around mist stations and in the shade. It was 102 degrees.

Before the game, we ordered chicken and drinks at the Crack Shack. Two soft drinks (called “subscriptions”) cost $10 apiece. We also grabbed water and headed to our seats, just three rows from the field. It was unbelievably hot. At 12:15 PM, fifteen minutes before kickoff, a pair of F-17 Falcons flew overhead, followed by a short ceremony led by university president Adela De La Torre, who was subsequently booed, due to her cancellation of the Aztec Spirit Warrior. Microphones were not optimized, so fans noted speeches and later referee calls were not completely audible.

Until kickoff, most fans stayed beneath the upper deck in shaded areas, as it became pretty apparent the heat was not just a nuisance, but a critical situation. We saw people wheeled out on stretchers before the game started.

A Dos Equis indoor bar was built into the stadium, but fans needed a pricey club membership to attend. Word circulated that all enclosed restaurants, bars and lounges were VIP club membership only for the time being.

Aside from the stunning heat, the atmosphere just before kickoff was great.  The sound system for music rocked, the university band trumpeted, the marching band was in formation on the field, cheerleaders danced, and coaches and staff were game time ready.

After kickoff, on the very first play it was clear the Aztecs had issues to work out… but this is not a game recap.  By the end of the first quarter, the temperature had reached 108 degrees. Quinn and I had to step out of the sun every 25 minutes to avoid getting heat stroke and all shaded areas were jam packed with people who had the same idea.

By the second half, the whole stadium had run out of ice and water became scarce. When the third quarter rolled around, stadium employees obtained reserves and started handing out water for the sake of safety. More people were carted away on an ongoing basis, though.

With minutes left in the game, and with no illusions of an 18-point miracle comeback, we visited the SDSU Team Store, a nice air-conditioned merchandise center, for some Aztec gear. The shop was nice, but at full capacity. We then watched the end of the game before hitting the road. Getting from the lot to the interstate took 20 minutes.

The incredible hot weather was a freak event, as temperatures this time of year in San Diego are normally 20 degrees cooler (editor’s note: The high in San Diego one calendar year earlier was 75 degrees). In addition, most Aztecs home games start closer to 7:00 PM. Heat aside, this stadium rocks.

I have compiled a list of first-game anomalies, all of which are likely to be remedied in the near term. Next, I have detailed Snapdragon Stadium pros and cons and then will issue an overall grade.

Kevin Durant and Vince Young among celebrities in Austin for Texas-Alabama

Hook Em!

It’s college football Saturday and there’s a huge showdown taking place in Austin.

Texas vs. No. 1 Alabama has the center stage for afternoon football, which has brought all of the stars out. The College GameDay crew is in attendance, Terrell Owens is also on the scene, and so is the summer’s biggest name of them all, Kevin Durant.

K.D., the one-time standout student-athlete for the Longhorns, pulled up to Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium to support his former school. And as he does so well, the NBA superstar was locked in on some fan engagement.

No words, just a “Hook ‘Em” gesture.

It looks like KD picked the perfect game to show up to.

Texas and Alabama are locked into a good one.

How old is Alabama football coach Nick Saban?

No matter how old he is, Nick Saban’s keeping the pedal to the metal.

When all is said and done, Alabama’s Nick Saban will be remembered as one of the greatest coaches in college football history. His list of accomplishments — more than 270 wins (and counting), seven national championships, 10 SEC titles and two Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards — almost speaks for itself.

But even as Saban continues to plow forward as the leader of the titan Crimson Tide, age appears to be just a number for the 70 year old. And that’s not just on the football field. The septuagenarian coach apparently likes to live life on the more “natural” hygienic side when he gets a chance.

Saban’s birthday is Halloween — when he’ll turn 71 this year. With an annual milestone day like that in the middle of the college football season, it doesn’t seem like the legendary coach will be slowing down any time soon.

Glen Powell dons mullet, promises shots of ‘Bijan’ mustard if Texas beats Alabama during College GameDay

Just a 10/10 performance from the Top Gun: Maverick star.

ESPN’s College GameDay entered the Danger Zone in Week 2 as it welcomed Glen Powell, the breakout star of Top Gun: Maverick, as the celebrity guest picker. Powell, who played bad boy Hangman in the summer’s biggest hit ($1.4 billion and counting!), is an Austin native and huge Texas fan. A natural fit for GameDay where the Longhorns host the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.

As a college football fan, Powell acquitted himself admirably on the panel, providing quick, concise and well-thought out reasoning. It was when they got to the big pick of the day that he really got to shine, however.

“Quinn Ewers has the strongest mullet in college football,” Powell said as he donned a mullet wig. But he wasn’t done. Powell took it a step further, pulling out a bottle of Dijon mustard.

“I’ll make a pledge right now,” he stated. “Every time he [Bijan Robinson] scores a touchdown today, I will take a shot of Bijan Dijon.”

It’s going to be a stretch for the Longhorns to overcome the No. 1 Tide, but if they do, they’ll probably have Hangman to thank.

Lee Corso takes the heavy favorite in picking Alabama over Texas on College GameDay

This one is not super surprising.

The Alabama Crimson Tide are heavy favorites against home squad Texas for Week 2’s biggest matchup. ESPN’s College GameDay was onsite in Austin for the festivities as unranked Texas (+20.5) attempts to knock off No. 1 Bama.

The Longhorns are hovering right around 21-point underdogs depending on which book you check, and it’s going to take a huge effort from Texas QB Quinn Ewers and the defense to have a hope at knocking off the Tide.

Unsurprisingly, this made Lee Corso’s job pretty easy this week. The panel was nearly unanimous (only the guest picker went with the homer pick … more on that in a minute):

The summer of Glen Powell continues as the breakout star of the massive blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick joined the cast of ESPN’s College GameDay as Week 2’s celebrity guest picker. Powell, an Austin native and huge Longhorns fan, aligned with Corso on every pick except going with Baylor over Corso’s BYU and Corso’s marquee pick of Bama over his hometown Texas.

Why Alabama’s Million Dollar Band isn’t playing at Crimson Tide’s game vs. Texas

There’s an interesting reason behind the decision not to have them make the trip to Austin.

If you’re watching Alabama play Texas in Austin on Saturday in Week 2 of the college football season, you may have noticed: The Crimson Tide’s Million Dollar Band isn’t in attendance.

Wondering what the deal is? We’re here to explain: Per a statement via The Tuscaloosa News, “Due to the seating location and configuration of the visiting institution’s ticket allotment at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, the Million Dollar Band will not make the trip this weekend for the Alabama at Texas football game.”

One of the reasons why, as they mentioned? As KXAN noted, the visiting band was placed in the upper northeast corner of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

So it just might not be worth the trip to be up so high, as you can see from this 2019 video of LSU’s band placement:

There’s your answer.
