Navy’s offense didn’t work against … Delaware?

Not to program shame, but Delaware is the team Navy was supposed to use as a tune-up for this, and instead the running game couldn’t get going – it gained just 184 yards – the three turnovers were a killer, and it was a rough 14-7 loss.

Memphis lost to Mississippi State, but that’s not a huge deal – that offense is going to roll on just about everyone.

As long as the Tigers can get off the field on third downs – they couldn’t do that against the Bulldog passing game – and if the offense is sharp enough to get a few early scores, everything else should be okay.

Why Navy Will Win

The Navy defense was terrific.

It gave up 14 points – the turnovers from the other side proved to be a problem – but it was fantastic against the Delaware running game allowing just 13 yards, and it should be able to hold up against a Memphis offense that has to get the backs in space.

The offense will come around. It struggled to generate any sort of a push on the inside, and the timing wasn’t there with the three fumbles and the inability to come up with anything on the outside, but that will change.

This looked and played like a team that needed the tune-up, even if it didn’t go well.

What’s Going To Happen

Let’s not completely dismiss Navy quite yet. The offense is more than capable of flipping the switch and crank up 400 rushing yards and control the clock for 40 minutes.

It’s not going to happen against Memphis, though.

Defense might be option with the Tigers, but the offensive side will perk up this week after a rough performance against Mississippi State.

QB Seth Henigan will be sharp, the backs will work better than Delaware’s did, and it’ll be an interesting win with more offense on both sides than you’d think.

Can the Blue Hens stop the run? Yeah.

They might not get into the backfield, but they managed to be strong against the run last season, they have the linebackers who can hold up against what’s coming, and overall they don’t beat themselves.

This isn’t a team that will commit a ton of penalties, and turnovers shouldn’t be an issue. The Navy defense has to replace a slew of key defensive parts, and offense also has to start over in several areas, and …

Why Navy Will Win

Delaware is going to have a hard time moving the chains.

This isn’t a high-powered team – it averaged under 300 yards per game last season – and it’ll have a hard time controlling the clock. If you let Navy own the tempo, you’re in big trouble.

There are some nice parts to the Blue Hen rushing game, but the offensive line doesn’t generate much of a push. The rested Navy defense should be able to hold up and the offense should own the fourth quarter.

It might not be razor sharp right out of the gate, but the Navy option attack will grind and grind some more as it takes over the game.

Delaware will generate a few good scoring drives, but it’ll get crushed in the time of possession battle and won’t be able to rally back late.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year

QB Clayton Tune, Sr. Houston

Can Tune be for Houston what Desmond Ridder was for Cincinnati last year? The numbers should be strong – SMU QB Tanner Mordecai might have the better passing season, though – but it’s more than that. Tune is the veteran leader on what should be the best team in the American Athletic Conference – and the stats aren’t bad, either.

He hit 68% of his passes for 3,546 yards and 30 touchdowns and ten picks, ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and led the way to a terrific 12-win season with a bowl victory. Now Houston is looking for even more.

LB Deshawn Pace, Jr. Cincinnati

Call this a projection that Pace takes his game up a few notches and becomes an even bigger terror for offenses.

An underappreciated all-around hybrid linebacker – he only earned Honorable Mention All-AAC honors last year – the 6-2, 215-pounder was all over the field making 95 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss and four picks, highlighted by a huge one against Indiana. It’s not really his role, but if he becomes more of a pass rusher, he’ll be a gamewrecker.

American Athletic Conference predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The American Athletic Conference is about to go through its final season with a whole lot of fun before all the changes come.

If you want wacky, and if you want unpredictable, here you go.

The future Big 12 programs – Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – should be the stars, but others are going to be just good enough to provide a push or even trip them up. Unfortunately, the Cougars don’t play the Bearcats or Knights.

Get ready for the inconsistencies with teams like East Carolina and Memphis being up and down, depending on the timing of the biggest games, SMU and Tulane will be interesting, and USF and Navy should be just improved enough to pull off a few interesting performances.

Remember, the American Athletic Conference doesn’t have divisions. The top two teams in the final standings will play for the title. It should come down to the last few games with the drama at a high level up until the very end.

Navy Midshipmen Preview 2022

… but they beat Army.

Navy is in a rut.

While Air Force and Army are rolling right along with winning seasons and bowl appearances, Navy is sputtering and coughing over the last two seasons going 7-15 since the great 11-2 2019 season.

Of course Ken Niumatalolo can coach, and of course this can all turn in a dime if the offensive system starts dominating again. Throw in the coming changes in the American Athletic Conference, and there’s a good chance Navy starts to win more and starts to look like it’s old self next year. But first, everything has to start working again and the team has to be a threat to come up with a winning season.

The offense can still control the clock, and the running game was ninth in America, and the defense even finished 34th in the nation and wasn’t bad. And yes, going 4-8 was awful, but four of the losses were by a touchdown or less, and …

Navy 17, Army 13.

Navy can play – there wasn’t a really bad loss among the eight last year – but being competitive isn’t enough. There’s enough in place to win a few more games and go bowling again, and beat Army, too.

Navy Midshipmen Preview 2022: Offense

The running game still came up with the yards. Yeah, it was able to get to 200 yards a game without a problem and it was able to hover around 300 yards on a regular basis, and it was able to control the clock, keep the turnovers to a minimum, and hit the really big downfield play when it did throw. But it wasn’t enough.

Navy only averaged 3.9 yards per carry and didn’t dominate on the ground as much as it needed to. Now it needs to improve with seven starters gone.

QB Tai Lavatai is a good-sized 6-2, 210-pounder who threw well – he hit 56% of his passes for 449 yards and five scores with the ability to hit the deep pass – and he ran for 371 yards and seven scores. The quarterback situation overall is fine, and a No. 1 receiver has to rise up.

It’s all relative – Mychal Cooper tied for the team lead with just 11 catches – but Jayden Umbarger and Mark Walker are veterans who’ll be fine. As always, as long as the wide receivers catch just one or two big passes a game – and block, they’re doing their job for a passing game that finished dead last in the country averaging 57 yards per game.

The tackles are set with Jamie Romo and Kip Franklin back, but the interior needs to be settled. It’s a smallish group outside of 307-pound Lirion Murtezi, and there has to be improvement along with the changes.

The top three rushers are done, and there isn’t a thumping fullback in place to replace leading ground gainer Isaac Ruoss or 230-pound James Harris.

It’ll be a quick backfield that will rotate all the smallish speedsters, and they’ll be fine as long as the O line does its job.

Navy Midshipmen Preview 2022: Defense

The defense is in better shape personnel-wise with six starters expected to be back. Last year’s bunch finished third in the AAC and was great against the run, but it has to force more takeaways and there needs to be some semblance of a pass rush.

Three of the top four tacklers are done, with the biggest hit at linebacker losing Diego Fagot. Tyler Fletcher is a young, productive hitter and John Marshall will work in the Striker role as the leading returning tackler – he made 53 stops last year – but the losing LB Johnny Hodges to TCU hurts.

The D that only came up with 16 sacks needs someone to be disruptive. Jacob Busic is a linebacker-sized end who made a few plays behind the line, and Clay Cromwell is a quick interior presence with 292-pound size to work around.

The secondary needs help from a pass rush. There were seven interceptions, but none over the last four games. Overall, the teams that could throw were able to do it on the Midshipmen. The corners are the big early concern, but Rayuan Lane and Evan Gibbons know what they’re doing at safety.

Cincinnati, UCF, Houston. All three are good enough to be considered the top team in the league coming into 2022, but there’s improvement among several other teams who’ll put up a fight.

Why Army Will Win

Army does what it does better than Navy does what it does.

The Navy ground game is terrific, but Army’s has been far more effective. Granted, the stats are a tad skewed when you’re rolling against UMass, Bucknell, and UConn – but also ran wild for 416 yards on Wake Forest and was just effective enough against Wisconsin’s No. 1 run D to keep the game close late.

Actually, the Black Knights stayed alive against the Badgers by throwing the ball on a fourth quarter drive. They were able to throw a bit against Wake Forest, and they got past Air Force by winging it around for over 200 yards.

Navy can hit the big play down the field, but again, Army does this better.

The biggest difference, though, is the speed of the option attacks. Navy allows way too many plays behind the line, and Army doesn’t allow anything in the backfield.

Why Navy Will Win

It’s not like Army is that much more effective than Navy.

Again, the overall stats, style, and records are a tad skewed because of the schedules. Army was able to beat WKU and Georgia State early in the season, and it rolled through Liberty, but it lost the two games against Power Five teams and the Air Force win was an overtime nail-biter that could’ve gone either way.

Navy? It pushed Cincinnati. It dealt with Notre Dame, and it had to face an American Athletic Conference slate. No, it wasn’t like playing in the SEC West, but there wasn’t the fluff like Army got to fatten up on.

Army is the 11th bowl bound team Navy will face. At least according to the official NCAA Toughest Schedule Report, Navy played the third-toughest schedule in the country – it’s based on cumulative wins and losses.

Army? 93rd.

Yeah, Army might be a bit more effective in the key areas Navy has to be great in, but it’s not like the game is going to get out of reach.

Even if the Knights get up, this is going to be a low scoring, ball control game with the Midshipmen getting plenty of chances to go on a drive or two to take over.

Navy can run the ball, too.

What’s Going To Happen

Army is off to the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl to face Missouri after this. Navy will be done.

As always with the service academies, it’s going to be a low scoring game that will go by in a blink – the clock will never stop with the two ground attacks doing what they do.

Navy is a wee bit more about power and Army is a wee bit more about speed, but it’ll end up coming down to the three passes Army will complete that Navy won’t.

Why Navy Will Win

It’s been a rough and disappointing season for the Midshipmen, but this is where they should finally get to have a little fun before getting ready for the Army game a few weeks later.

The running game hasn’t been dominant like it needs to be, but it rolled East Carolina for 345 yards in the 38-35 battle and hit the 300-yard mark in the stunning win at Tulsa three weeks ago.

Temple doesn’t score.

It can’t move the chains, it doesn’t control the clock, and it hasn’t scored more than ten points since mid-October and hasn’t scored more than 14 in any of the last six games.

Why Temple Will Win

This will have to be Temple’s bowl game.

The offense fall off the map over the second half of the season in blowout after blowout, but the defense has the ability to get into the backfield and it should be able to hold up reasonably well against the Navy style.

It’s not like the Midshipmen are pushing Georgia for defensive stats. The run D is fine, but the O isn’t getting enough yards – there’s no passing game – and Temple should be able to move the ball better than it has in weeks.

It’ll get to 300 yards for the first time since early October, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Navy will always have the ball.

The running game will grind things down, but that will keep Temple in the game just enough to make this interesting. However, Navy will own the clock in the second half as it keeps the ball for two long marches to put this away.

Why East Carolina Will Win

The East Carolina run defense continues to be stunningly strong.

A disaster a few years ago, and a problem over the last few seasons, the Pirates are doing a great job of holding teams down on the ground, allowing fewer than 200 yards in each of the last seven games.

Overall, the Pirates struggled during the first half of the season and haven’t allowed more than 400 yards of total O over the last five games.

Navy’s offense has to run to win, and it’s not running well. It’s 2-1 when running for over 300 yards, and it’s 0-6 when it doesn’t.

Why Navy Will Win

East Carolina’s D isn’t that good.

Yeah, the run defense is coming up with nice numbers, but it’s not going against a slew of great ground games. Navy still leads the American Athletic Conference in rushing, it dominates the time of possession battle, and it doesn’t make any mistakes to make anything easy.

For all of the good things East Carolina is doing, it turns it over lots and lots and lots of times. The O has given it up 13 times in the last five games and multiple times in the eight games.

Navy needs to be +2 in turnover margin, but …

What’s Going To Happen

East Carolina can control the clock, too.

It’s not going to get destroyed in the time of possession battle – it keeps the ball over 32 minutes per game – with a defense that dominates on third downs.

Navy won’t go on enough long marches, but it’ll score off of two takeaways to stay alive. The Pirates, though, will go into the Cincinnati on a four-game winning streak to keep the momentum going.
