14. Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the parts that return for new head coach Sam Pittman aren’t all that bad. It’s been a rough ride for Arkansas football over the last few years, but the offensive backfield of QB Feleipe Franks and RB Rakeem Boyd is a great place to start a new era.

Be Concerned About … the D line isn’t up to SEC snuff. The offensive skill parts and linebacking corps are solid, but it’s going to be tough to make a big push if the defensive front – and the run defense that was last in the conference and 124th in the nation – isn’t more active.

The Season Will Be Successful If … there’s a big upset on the way to a push for five wins. That might be asking for the world – especially if the schedule takes away some or all of the non-conference games – but 2016 was the last time the Hogs won more than four games.

13. Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the defense is about to be a thing. Vanderbilt will never be able to keep up with the better offenses in shootouts, but the defense might not let that happen with the fantastic linebackers and safeties to keep games close.

Be Concerned About … the offense that was dead last in the SEC – averaging 299 yards and 16.5 points per game – needs to find a whole lot more pop. The passing game that couldn’t do much to make things happen down the field has to be a whole lot stronger.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the Commodores flirt with bowl eligibility. That’s going to be tough considering the schedule, but the defense should be nasty enough to pull off an upset or three to come up with a decent run.

[vertical-gallery id=516499]

12. Ole Miss Rebels

Ole Miss CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the Lane Train is about to enter the station. New head man Lane Kiffin brings the star power, the attention, and the coaching chops – he did a whale of a job at Florida Atlantic – to make Ole Miss the annoying fly that buzzes around the big boys. He’s got the passing game to make things fun right away.

Be Concerned About … the secondary has to be a whole lot stronger. Even though the pass rush was impressive – it finished second in the SEC – the Rebels allowed the most passing yards in the conference. The offensive front has to be better, too, after giving up way too many plays behind the line.

The Season Will Be Successful If … Ole Miss goes bowling again. It’s been four years since the program has enjoyed a swag-bag game – going 10-3 with a Sugar Bowl win over Oklahoma State in 2015 – but even in a strong SEC West, the Rebels should be decent under the new coaching staff.

11. Missouri Tigers

Missouri CFN 2020 Preview

Be Excited About … the Eliah Drinkwitz era should kick off with a whole lot of energy. Former head man Barry Odom caught a raw deal, but Drinkwitz is at least a change for the Tigers after a few mediocre seasons. It’s a good all-around team without a whole lot of major concerns, but …

Be Concerned About … a pass rush that didn’t show up. Getting to the quarterback has been one of the calling cards of Mizzou football since if joined the SEC, and finishing last in the conference in sacks last season wasn’t okay. The line is good, but it has to make more big things happen.

The Season Will Be Successful If … the Tigers go bowling. They missed out on a bowl game – not their fault last year – in three of the last five seasons, and getting off to a big start would be huge for Drinkwitz. He only had one year as the Appalachian State head man, so there’s still a bit of a prove it factor.

CFN in 60 Video: LSU Preview
[jwplayer QNBTGeVR]

2020 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

WR Ja’Marr Chase, Jr. LSU
Justin Jefferson caught 111 passes, and there were a whole slew of other weapons for Joe Burrow to throw to, but Chase was the Biletnikoff winner as the nation’s best receiver with the greatest season by any wideout in SEC history.

He cranked up 84 catches for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns. To put that into perspective, he had as many receiving scores or more than all but 58 of the 130 FBS teams, and he had more receiving yards than nine teams.

The SEC is loaded once again with tremendous receiving talent, and Chase doesn’t have Burrow around anymore, but he’s still going to be one of the most dangerous all-around weapons in the country.

2020 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

CB Derek Stingley, Soph. LSU
LSU safety Grant Delpit won the Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. He wasn’t event best defensive back on his own team last year – actually, he might have been fourth in the mix – behind Stingley, the lockdown star who came into LSU as a big-time recruit, and showed why right away.

The 6-1, 195-pounder led the team with six interceptions, 15 broken up passes, and 38 tackles. There’s some reloading to do in the Tiger secondary, and the stats aren’t going to be as good for Stingley – no one will throw his way – but he’s an NFL starting corner who’ll still be around the college world for the next few seasons.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Missouri Tigers Offense 3 Things To Know

Let’s be fair to the Missouri offense and the former coaching staff. QB Kelly Bryant got banged up, the schedule got harder, and there was no bowl game to play for in what became a lost season. Even so, scoring 27 points over a four game late season stretch wasn’t okay.

Enter new head coach Eliah Drinkwitz, who’ll handle some of the offensive coordinator duties along with former TCU co-OC Curtis Luper. Together. they have more tweaking to do than a total overhaul despite the O losing six starters.

It all starts with cranking up an offensive line that wasn’t up to the normal Missouri snuff when it came to pass protection and giving everyone time to work.

CFN in 60 Video: Missouri Tigers Preview
[jwplayer oOKtqCKV]

Center Trystan Colon-Castillo is now with the Baltimore Ravens, guard Tre’Vour Wallace-Sims is on Jacksonville, and left tackle Yasir Durant is a Kansas City Chief. So the line that wasn’t all that great last year now has to be better without three NFL-caliber blockers.

Start with Case Cook at one guard gig, junior Larry Borom to move around where needed at one of the tackle jobs, and the rest of the parts to be filled in from there.

Working behind the reconfigured group is leading rusher Larry Rountree, a tough back who ran for 829 yards and nine scores without too many big runs. there’s more than enough depth to come up with a decent rotation, but again, the line has to be put together first.

– Is this the start of the Taylor Powell era? The junior got plenty of work when Bryant was hurt, but he only hit 47% of his passes for 297 yards with a touchdown and two picks. TCU transfer Shawn Robinson had to sit out last season, but he’s been around for a year, has the all-around skills that fit what Drinkwitz wants to do, and he’s got the experience Powell is missing.

The starter won’t have TE Albert Okwuegbunam around – he left early and hooked back up with QB Drew Lock with the Denver Broncos – and top yardage guy Jonathan Nance is done.

The receiving corps gets a shot in the arm with Virginia Tech transfer Damon Hazelton almost certain to be the new No. 1 target. The grad transfer averaged 17 yards per catch with a Hokie-high eight touchdowns last year.

NFL Draft 2020: SEC

It’s borderline obnoxious, but hardly unexpected.

As much as fans of other college football conferences might want to argue and complain, yeah, the SEC is usually just better.

And why? This isn’t hard. The league has better players than everyone else.

The SEC has owned the recruiting rankings by 85 miles ever since the beginning of the internet, and it comes across year after year in the NFL Draft.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

Last year, nine SEC players were selected in the first round. Granted it was still 28% of the first 32 picks, but it was still a tad light for the league that handed over ten of its finest players in the 2018 first round, and 12 in 2017.

But is it even possible to for a conference to own half of a first round by accounting for 16 picks?

11 SEC players were selected in 2014 first round, 12 got the call in 2013, and let’s just cheat a little bit and give a little boost to the league in 2011, considering Missouri and Texas A&M were making the move from the Big 12 to the SEC. With the newcomers added, the current SEC programs accounted for the first seven picks of the 2011 NFL Draft and 13 of the first 32.

It took a big bend of the criteria and the SEC still wasn’t even close to getting up to 16 first round picks.

By the way, the BetMGM line for total SEC players drafted in the first round is set at a ridiculous 15.5.

Is it even possible? Helped by Alabama and LSU, yeah.

LSU QB Joe Burrow, Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, Bama receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs, fellow Tide star OT Jedrick Wills, Auburn DT Derrick Brown, Florida CB CJ Henderson, Georgia OT Andrew Thomas, LSU edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson. That gets you to nine.

South Carolina DT Javon Kinlaw will go in the first round, as will LSU LB Patrick Queen. That’s 11, and a long, long, long way to go to get to 16 and the over.

There are others like LSU WR Justin Jefferson and Alabama S Xavier McKinney, who both have a shot of going in the top 32. There’s a chance RB D’Andre Swift and OT Isaiah Wilson from Georgia are both going early, and DE Terrell Lewis and CB Trevon Diggs from Alabama also could get the Day One call.

It’s not entirely insane to make a call that more than half of your 2020 NFL Draft first round will be made up of SEC players.

Let’s try this a different way.

[lawrence-related id=434326]

How Many SEC Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

How many players outside of the SEC are guaranteed to go in the first round?

Rapid-fire – Chase Young, Jeff Okudah, Isaiah Simmons, Justin Herbert, Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton, CeeDee Lamb, Kenneth Murray, Jordan Love, AJ Terrell. That’s ten, and then it’s all hit-or-miss from a pool of around 15 players who could slide into the top 32.

But SEC players are in that same bucket of first round tweeners.

How crazy do you want to get? Is this really going to be one of the most historic drafts ever in a chest-puffing moment for the It Just Means More league?

Yeah. There are more than enough SEC players to get to 16, and that’s where the value is – minimal as it is.

Prediction: Over
BetMGM line: 15.5, Over +115, Under -141

7. 5 Teams That Might Disappoint

This is where we get to have some fun.

Unlike the Power 5 Sleeper Teams in the earlier piece, this is more about the teams that won’t be on the radar for most college football fans, but could make a big impact.

It’s a bit much to put these teams into the 2019 Baylor and Minnesota category and challenge for big things – again, that’s what the sleeper team piece was about – but they should be ready to defy expectations.

Think 2019 Illinois and Louisville – they were part of last year’s list of Potential Surprises – but things don’t always work out as hoped for. Arkansas and UCLA didn’t do what we thought they might.

But if we can hit three of five like we did last year, we’ll take it.

And the Power Five programs that could and should be the biggest surprises are …

ACC: Syracuse

Let’s try this again.

The excitement for 2019 was sky-high after a 10-3 2018 campaign. Syracuse was one of just two ACC teams in the preseason rankings – Clemson, of course, was the other – but it all came apart in a big way.

Maryland was awful last season, but it looked like the Kansas City Chiefs against the Orange in a 63-20 win. Even so, a 3-2 SU start provided hope early on, but a four-game losing streak ended all of that.

The run defense was non-existent, the offensive line almost got QB Tommy DeVito killed – allowing the third-most sacks per game in America – and every week was a struggle.

However, things picked up late with wins of two of the last three games -ruining Duke’s bowl hopes along the way – and the offense started to pick up the production.

The O line might have been awful, but it comes back experienced to try giving DeVito a fighting chance. New offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert will crank up the tempo with a decent group of receivers returning.

Schedule-wise, three of the first four games are on the road, but Boston College, Rutgers and Western Michigan are all winnable. Get through those, beat Louisville at home, and a 6-0 start is likely before dealing with Clemson.

Throw in a manageable back half of the slate, and rebounding to 2018 form isn’t a crazy ask.

SEC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which SEC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which SEC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is football, especially in the SEC. Football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best SEC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

SEC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

These schools suffered the indignity of failing to come up with a winning season in either of the two major sports. The fans didn’t get to have any fun.

14. Vanderbilt

Football: 3-9 overall, 1-7 in conference, 7th in SEC East

Basketball: 11-21 overall, 3-15 in conference, 14th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The football team never got anything going. There was a close win over a sleepy Missouri team, and that was about it with no offense and blowout loss after blowout loss.

Football was bad, but basketball was worse. At least the Commodores didn’t finish dead last in the conference in football. The hoops side finally won two SEC game in the final three, but overall it lost 17 of its last 20 games.

13. Ole Miss

Football: 4-8 overall, 2-6 in conference, 6th in SEC West

Basketball: 15-17 overall, 6-12 in conference, 12th in SEC

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The basketball team started out well and crashed badly. Just when there was a chance to pivot – at 13-11 on a three-game winning streak – it all went wrong with six losses in the final eight games.

While the bad football season led to landing Lane Kiffin, getting there was rough. Losing five games in the last six was rough enough, but the way it dropped the Egg Bowl at Mississippi State – the peeing dog antics and missed extra point – made it uglier.

LSU (17-6) vs. Missouri (11-12) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why LSU Will Win

Can the LSU Tigers pull up out of the strange two-game losing streak? The defense has stopped working, but the offense continues to be fantastic with 90 points in three of the last four games with an attack that averages more than 80 points per game.

Missouri has’t been consistent – it can’t shoot, it really can’t shoot from the outside, and it has a problem with committing way, way too many fouls.

LSU is hardly perfect, but the offense combined with the ability to dominate Mizzou on the boards should be enough to get by.

[lawrence-related id=507650]

Why Missouri Will Win

What’s been LSU’s problem over the last two games? It couldn’t stop anything Vanderbilt tried to do offensively in the stunning 99-90 loss – the O was miserable from three – and it got roasted on the boards against even more Tigers, losing to Auburn.

Missouri can D up from the outside and it should be able to slow down the LSU offense from three. Mizzou is good at taking the ball away, LSU is prone to giving it up too much, and this might be an interesting shootout considering the defensive issues on both sides.

What’s Going To Happen

LSU’s defense might be lousy, but it’s not going to have too many problems against a Mizzou team that doesn’t shoot well enough.

Missouri doesn’t move the ball around to get the easy chances like it’ll need to, and LSU will take advantage as it pulls away.
