Auburn vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

Anything interesting happening at Auburn this week?

Carnell “Cadillac” Williams will step in as the interim head coach after the Bryan Harsin era came to an end. Yes, Auburn has lost four straight, and yes, it was a massive break against Missouri away from being on a six game losing run, but there are a few positives.

The offense perked up over the last few weeks. It ran well against Ole Miss and Robbie Ashford threw for 285 yards in last week’s loss to Arkansas. That’s a step forward, and so was not turning the ball over against the Hogs – giveaways have been an issue.

But it comes down to this – can Auburn hold up against the Mississippi State midrange passing game?

For all of the problems and issues, Auburn’s pass defense isn’t getting gouged, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Mississippi State Will Win

No one has rocked the passing game against the Auburn defense because everyone spends so much time running.

LSU couldn’t complete a thing, but the ground game was good enough and the defense forced four takeaways in its win. Georgia ran for almost 300 yards, Ole Miss went off, and Arkansas rumbled at will last week – the Tigers allowed well over 1,000 rushing yards over the last three games.

Mississippi State will be effective on the ground, but that’s not how this works.

The Tigers haven’t seen anything like this Bulldog passing game, but Penn State’s Sean Clifford was able to hit the midrange throws as much as he wanted, Stetson Bennett connected on 69% of his throws in Georgia’s win, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas was terrific through the air last week, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the Mississippi State passing game. However, the team is 0-3 when it doesn’t hit 300 yards and 5-0 when it does.

Auburn hasn’t allowed 300 yards in any passing game so far. It’s about to see that go bye-bye.

Auburn isn’t playing that poorly considering what a disaster of a season this is. However, it won’t be able to come up with a third down stop, it’ll turn the ball over in a big moment, and the Bulldogs will crank up the machine now that they’re back home.

Pitt at North Carolina Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

It’s been an up-and-down season, but that works if you’re a fan of patterns.

The Panthers have gone win-loss-win-loss in the last four games, with the success mostly depending on the steadiness of the ground game.

Things usually go well when they run for 200 yards or more – going 3-0 when they do – and it helps when they’re not turning the ball over in bunches like they did in losses to Georgia Tech and Louisville.

North Carolina was able to stuff the Virginia Tech and Miami rushing attacks, but it’s getting hammered for well over 200 yards by everyone else.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why North Carolina Will Win

North Carolina is winning despite the ACC’s worst run defense struggling as much as it is.

The offense continues to rip through everyone with a highly-efficient passing game that’s averaging well over 300 yards per game, and it helps that the running game is working, too.

The Panthers are usually able to hit 150 yards on the ground without a problem – the one time they didn’t was in the loss to Notre Dame.

They might not get to 150 against Pitt, but the offense has enough firepower through the air to overcome that.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

North Carolina’s offense will make Pitt press, and that’s where the mistakes will come.

The Panthers have turned it over eight times in the last three games and are 0-3 when giving it up multiple times. North Carolina doesn’t force turnovers, but it’ll get two in this, Drake Maye will throw for well over 300 yards, and the Tar Heels – despite the D – will keep on rolling.

Alabama vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Let’s just say the Alabama secondary is having a few issues.

Oh sure, it was fine against the ULMs and Vanderbilts of the world, but it struggled to handle Quinn Ewers and the Texas offense – at least before Ewers got knocked out – and now everyone’s trying to hand Hendon Hooker the Heisman after he threw for 385 yards, five touchdowns, and led Tennessee to a late game-winning drive in the 52-49 classic.

That’s bad, and the penalty problems are worse.

There weren’t any flag issues against – again – the ULMs and Vanderbilts of the world, but the 15 penalties against Texas could’ve and probably should’ve been in the 20s, there were ten against Arkansas, and the 17 against Tennessee were a killer.

Mississippi State has its own penalty issues – the Tide should be able to keep up – but more importantly, this isn’t the time to face one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football.

Will Rogers might have struggled a bit in the 27-17 loss to Kentucky last week, but he’s going to throw it 40 times, he’s going to keep the pressure on the Bama corners to deal with the quick-hitting passes, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Alabama Will Win

Rogers doesn’t throw deep enough to matter. That’s not the Mississippi State offense.

Alabama’s secondary has problems with the big played downfield, but it’s not all that bad against everything else. It struggled with Xavier Worthy of Texas, and Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt turned into Randy Moss last week with his epic five touchdown performance.

Everyone saw the Texas and Tennessee games, but no one else was able to do too much through the air.

Rogers can pick apart the Tide with his midrange throws, but that’s fine – the defensive backs can tackle.

For all the slings and arrows Alabama’s defense is taking, it’s fantastic on third downs. The D is better suited for this style of attack – it’ll bend, but it shouldn’t do a whole lot of breaking.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

14 in a row.

Mississippi State won 17-12 in Nick Saban’s first season with the Tide in 2007. It hasn’t been pretty since then.

The 2017 game was a fight – Alabama pulled it out 31-24 on the way to the national title. Over the last four years it beat the Bulldogs by a combined score of 152 to 16, an average of 38 to 4.

Kentucky’s Will Levis was able to hit just about everything in last week’s win over the Bulldogs, and the Wildcat ground game was able to rumble without a problem. Arkansas didn’t have KJ Jefferson and it was able to run, too, in the 40-17 loss. LSU was able to run for over 200 yards in its win over Mike Leach’s team.

Bryce Young will be Bryce Young against a Bulldog D that doesn’t generate a ton of pressure, the running game will take control, and the secondary will hold up well enough.

It won’t be a total wipeout, and it won’t be a razor sharp performance, but there won’t be too much of a hangover after the Tennessee loss.

Mississippi State vs Kentucky Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

He’s never going to get any Heisman love playing in a Mike Leach offense – no one seems to respect the stats like they should – and in a conference with Bryce Young, Hendon Hooker, Will Levis, and all the other star quarterbacks, but no one’s playing better than Will Rogers.

He’s winging it around 47 times a game, he hasn’t thrown an interception in the last three games and has 22 touchdown passes with just three picks on the season, and he’s making all the right decisions as the O seems to have slowed down for him.

Kentucky’s pass defense is fine, but South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler dinked dunked his way to a win last week hitting over 70% of his throws, and that cane a week after Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss threw for over 200 yards.

There isn’t any sort of a pass rush to bother Rogers, he’ll dink and dunk to his heart’s content, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Kentucky Will Win

Levis is pretty good, too.

He didn’t go against South Carolina with a foot problem, but he was able to practice enough this week and is ready to give it a go.

If the passing game isn’t clicking, this is when the running game has to finally step up.

The defense has been good enough, and the passing game is should be fine with Levis back, but the ground attack is averaging just 2.7 yards per carry and it hasn’t taken over like its should with the return of Chris Rodriguez a few weeks ago.

Mississippi State’s run defense was okay against a KJ Jefferson-less Arkansas, but it still allowed 241 yards. LSU was able to run without a problem on the Bulldog D that’s allowing 4.5 yards per carry overall, and this week the commitment to grinding it out will be there.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Neither team will run particularly well, but Mississippi State is doing a decent job of it lately. That’s just to kill time before Rogers can throw another  midrange completion.

The Bulldogs are better at doing what they do than Kentucky is of doing what it does. Levis is still hobbling, the O will give it away two times, and the offensive front won’t be effective enough.

Rogers will have something to do with it, too. The time of possession will matter here. UK needs to own the clock, and it won’t.

Arkansas vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

The running game keeps on working.

The Hogs were a few inches away from beating Texas A&M – a late missed kick did them in – and they had Alabama in big, big trouble before the fourth quarter went the wrong way in the 49-26 loss.

The offense has been been almost perfectly balanced, the defense is among the best in the country at getting to the quarterback, and it’s all going against a Mississippi State team that hasn’t seen a great ground game and isn’t a rock in pass protection.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldog formula is working.

There’s no real running game, but it comes up with yards when it tries. The passing game isn’t putting up a bazillion yards like Mike Leach offenses usually do, but it’s efficient, effective, and it’s moving the chains.

But the offense wasn’t a question mark. The other phases are working, too, with a blocked kick for a touchdown along with a pick six in the 42-24 win over Texas A&M.

The defense is good enough, and the short-range passing should be able to negate the Arkansas pass rush a wee bit. There will be moments when things bog down against this Hog D, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Mississippi State will be in for yet another interesting SEC fight. It struggled to et the passing game going in the loss to LSU, the defense had an interesting time against Texas A&M, and Arkansas will do a little of everything right with a steady, balanced attack.

However, the Hog pass defense that gave up over 300 yards in each of the first three games – all wins – won’t be able to hold up when it absolutely has to.

Both teams will trade shots, but the Bulldogs will hold on late.
