Miami vs North Carolina Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The offense continues to be amazing.

The Tar Heels lead the ACC averaging 507 yards per game with a high-powered offense, Drake Maye is one of the nation’s best young quarterbacks, and it should work against a Miami defense that failed miserably the last time out.

The Hurricane pass defense gave up a slew of passing yards early in the season, and Middle Tennessee took things up a few notches with a 408-yard passing performance in a 45-31 Blue Raider win.

That’s fine – defenses struggle from time to time – but the offense didn’t do its part to keep up pace. As good as Tyler Van Dyke is, the downfield passing game isn’t there, Texas A&M and Middle Tennessee allowed the Canes to complete just 51% of their passes, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Miami Will Win

Okay, enough stalling.

The North Carolina defense. It’s not good.

Only two teams in the ACC are allowing more than 400 yards per game. Georgia Tech is giving up 412 yards per outing, and then there’s North Carolina.

It’s giving up 451 yards per game.

It’s able to get away with it because the offense is to strong, but it’s not like the D was getting ripped apart by Georgia and USC.

Notre Dame’s offense did a whole lot of nothing before going off on the Tar Heels. Appalachian State rolled for 649 yards – and haven’t come within 200 yards of that against another FBS team since – and Georgia State had a whole lot of fun.

Virginia Tech’s miserable offense came up with 273 yards, and that still didn’t help move the needle on UNC’s defensive stats.

Miami has had two weeks to sit and stew on the loss to Middle Tennessee. The offense should be ready to go.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Miami will start with the basics. It’ll get the offensive line going, grind it out a bit, and then let Van Dyke and the passing attack start to work.

It’s not a plus to get into a shootout with the Tar Heels – they’re better equipped for a high-scoring fun fest – and every third down stop will mean the world. The UNC offense is amazing, but it doesn’t do a thing to control the clock. On the flip side, Miami is happy to keep it slow and steady.

The points will be there for both sides, but Miami – who’ll have the ball for almost 40 minutes – will get it done with one big late defensive stop to go along with the balanced offensive attack.

Miami vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The Blue Raiders turned it around fast after the blowout loss to James Madison to start the season.

They’ve stepped up the defense with a great pass rush and a whole lot of tackles for loss leading to a whole lot of turnovers.

Last year’s D was a takeaway machine, and after not getting anything against the Dukes, it came up with six in the last two games. Combine that with a steady passing game and enough of a ground attack to get by, and the team is playing well.

Miami outplayed Texas A&M last week, but the two turnovers did it in. Middle Tennessee needs those mistakes.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Miami Will Win

The Miami passing game should kick back in.

James Madison winged it around for 287 yards and six scores, Colorado State threw well with three touchdown passes, and Tyler Van Dyke and the Hurricanes should bomb away.

It would be nice to get the ground game going, but it’s the air show that’s going to carry the offense until the other parts are stronger. The offense is moving the chains without a problem, it’s dominating the tempo and time and possession, and it doesn’t have to take a slew of big chances.

Just don’t turn it over, and the defense should take care of the rest.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Miami will generate enough of a pass rush to get to Blue Raider QB Chase Cunningham and make him press a bit. The offense will come up with a decent balance, but it’ll be a steady day from the passing attack that puts this away.

The Middle Tennessee defense will have its moments, but the offensive line that allows too many plays behind the line will struggle.

Miami vs Texas A&M Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

Can Texas A&M score?

It was one of the glossed over aspects to the early high ranking for an Aggie team that everyone expects to be fantastic – does it have the skill guys?

Haynes King is a promising young quarterback, but it’s probably going to be Max Johnson getting the start – it’s not a plus to have a shakeup like this now. There’s talent on offense, and Devon Achane will be in someone’s NFL backfield soon enough, but is the firepower there? More to the point, can A&M’s deliberate style show off whether or not the playmakers really are there?

They sure as shoot weren’t in the 17-14 loss to Appalachian State with just eight first downs from the offense and 180 yards in all.

Miami’s defense isn’t quite there yet, but it showed off the offensive talent in layups against Bethune-Cookman and Southern Miss with 100 points and well over 1,000 yards in the two games.

The O will slow down against the terrific Aggie defense, but if QB Tyler Van Dyke and the passing game can get up early, can A&M crank up any sort of a comeback?

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Texas A&M Will Win

It’s not that bad quite yet, everyone.

Appalachian State has guys. It doesn’t have a slew of NFL stars, but that’s a veteran team with good lines, great running backs, and the experience across the board to have handled a situation like last Saturday.

No, the A&M offense didn’t come tough, but the other side was more than fine. Remember, that’s an App State team that rolled up and down the field in the wild game against North Carolina, and it managed just 315 yards and was more opportunistic than sensational.

For all of the team’s problems, the offensive line has been good in pass protection so far, the secondary hasn’t allowed much of anything, and there’s too much talent overall to be this mediocre.

Miami has looked strong so far, but even with the easy win over Southern Miss, it hasn’t faced anyone like the Aggies just dealt with.

It’s going to come down to …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Mistakes. Texas A&M’s four turnovers so far are too many, and Miami has first three takeaways in each of the first two games.

A&M can’t press, and it can’t try to erase the problems of the weird loss right away. It’s going to have to stay patient, it can’t let Van Dyke get into a groove, and it will have to rely on a run defense that won’t allow much of anything.

Don’t lose the turnover battle, own field position, and pound, pound, pound. The O line might be okay so far at keeping Johnson from getting popped – assuming he really is starting – but the running game has yet to do anything interesting.

That has to change here – it will do just enough to get out with a tough win. The defense will hang on for dear life on the final drive to survive.

Miami vs Southern Miss Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The Golden Eagles might have lost the opener to Liberty 29-27 in four overtimes, but they were far more competitive than they were over the last few seasons and looked like they’re going to be a factor in the Sun Belt.

Now they have to chill on the mistakes.

Frank Gore Jr. is one of the better backs Miami will deal with – he ran over the Flames for 178 yards and two scores – and the defense will pressure Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke and the backfield far better than Bethune-Cookman did.

The potential is there to make this a fight for a while, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Miami Will Win

Yeah, the mistakes.

The passing game struggled against Liberty – to be nice about it – and the team killed itself with ten penalties and five turnovers. The D was able to force three takeaways and Liberty helped with 12 penalties of its own, but Southern Miss has to be perfect this week, and that’s not going to happen.

The Hurricanes got their warm-up scrimmage in with the 70-13 win over Bethune-Cookman. As long as they keep their own mistakes to a minimum – they should be balanced enough on offense to make this easy.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Miami defense will load up against the run and dare the Golden Eagles to hit a few downfield passes. That’s not going to go well for the visitors.

The Southern Miss defensive front will be enough of a bother to keep the Canes from marching up and down the field at will, but Mario Crisotbal’s team will look the part for a second straight week.

Miami vs Bethune-Cookman Game Preview

Why Bethune-Cookman Will Win

The Wildcats should bring a decent enough pass rush to make the Miami offensive line work at least a little bit.

Que’shaun Byrd is a good, quick back who can be dangerous to worry about, but any hope of keeping this from being a total wipeout comes from the defensive side that gets into the backfield from several spots – at least that’s the hope.

The defense has quick playmakers who can get to the ball, but …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

Miami should be able to pound away as much as it wants to.

The Bethune-Cookman defensive front won’t be able to hold up as Mario Cristobal’s era will likely start by establishing the offensive line and the ground attack.

There isn’t enough offensive punch from the Wildcats to make this any sort of a shootout, so the Hurricanes can try to be balanced, work on establishing a rhythm, and then hold up defensively against an offense that won’t have a dangerous passing game to make any second half noise.

Miami needs to get the pieces in place on defense, the offense has to get the line play down, and the new coaching staff needs to know how it all works. That’s why you play Southern Miss next week before dealing with Texas A&M, and that’s why you schedule Bethune-Cookman.

Miami will have the twos handling most of the work in the second half as QB Tyler Van Dyke and the offense put this away after a few drives.
