Louisville vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

So what’s going wrong? Why isn’t this working?

The passing game isn’t consistent enough and the explosiveness is missing from the running game, but it doesn’t need to crank up a ton of points and production this week.

Virginia is having a harder time offensively.

The Cavalier offense is a shadow of its 2021 self with no consistency and without enough from the passing game in any way. All of a sudden, Virginia has the least efficient passing attack in the ACC, there are too many turnovers, and it’s partly because the line is struggling.

There’s a lot going wrong with Louisville, but the pass rush is terrific.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Virginia Will Win

So what’s going wrong? Why isn’t this working?

The team wins when the passing production is there. The Cavaliers are 2-0 when going over 202 passing yards and 0-3 when hitting the mark or going under, and now they’re dealing with a Louisville secondary that’s being picked apart too easily.

Boston College isn’t doing anything this year – it hit 86% of its passes for over 300 yards in the win over the Cardinals. Florida State hit 70% of its throws even with the loss of staring quarterback Jordan Travis, and Syracuse’s Garrett Shrader hit 73% of his throws.

Can Brennan Armstrong and the Virginia offense finally start to hit the easy throws? The Louisville defense might help the cause, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Armstrong is only connecting on 52% of his passes.

It’s hard to assume Louisville can do much of anything right at the moment as it sputtered and coughs and turns it over too much, but at least the offense is putting up points.

Virginia’s O has stopped, it’s not going to do what it needs to with the passing game, and the ultra-flaky Cardinals are going to continue with the pattern of loss-win-loss-win-loss …

Why Louisville Will Win

The Cardinals were able to figure out the Virginia hex the first time around with a big first half and a red hot game from the field.

They were able to stop the Cavaliers early on, they didn’t turn the ball over enough – just five times – to avoid a slew of easy points, and they dominated on the boards.

The same formula should be able to work again.

UofL is fantastic on the boards, Virginia isn’t. It’s amazing at hitting from three – leading the ACC – and Virginia isn’t. Keep the pressure on by hitting early, break UVa out of its shell, and make this a scoring fight.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Virginia Will Win

It’s all working.

Virginia is 10-1 in its last 11 games – the one loss coming to Louisville – with the defense and the overall style starting to work like they’re supposed to.

They haven’t allowed more than 59 points in any of their last four games, they’re able to maintain control of games by slowing things down to a crawl, and they’re locking down well on teams that need to hit from the outside to succeed.

The 80 points allowed against Louisville were the most allowed all year, and it was the only time thieved allowed more than 70 points. It was an aberration.

What’s Going To Happen

The Cardinals have been a bit inconsistent lately, and they’ve had real problems on the road losing their last three.

They’ll drop the road game to the Cavaliers, too.

Virginia will keep the tempo at its level and won’t get hit with a knockout blow right away like it did in the first meeting. This is where the D shows just how good it really is, especially against three point shooters.

Louisville (20-3) vs. Virginia (15-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Virginia Will Win

The formula is starting to work again.

As always, Virginia is slowing things down to a crawl, it’s playing amazing defense, and it’s keeping games at its level. Now, it’s starting to win again after a rough stretch of close battles with four losses in five games.

In a close battle, it comes down to who’s coming up with the key takeaways and defensive stops. Louisville doesn’t force mistakes as it wins by cranking up the offensive production and gets hot.

How did it lose to Florida State a month ago? It missed just about everything from the field. How did it lose to Kentucky? It hit just 40% from the field. It lost to Texas Tech when it went under the 40% mark, too.

Virginia holds teams to 36% from the field.

[lawrence-related id=507541]

Why Louisville Will Win

For the most part, Virginia is struggling to come up with all the clutch shots late like it did throughout last year.

Part of the problem is the overall field goal percentage. Last year, the Cavaliers hit over 47% from the field and and close to 40% from three. This season? They’re making only 40% of their shots overall and are an abysmal 28% from three.

Louisville’s defense is destroying everyone’s outside shooting game – it’s among the best in the country at stopping teams from hitting the three, and it’s sixth in the nation in overall field goal defense.

Against Virginia, all it takes is a stop or two to make all the difference.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Virginia go back to being Virginia in all phases? Not in the KFC Yum!

The Cavalier defense will do its part, but Louisville’s defense will be just a bit better when it has to be. The UofL O will hit the threes the Cavs won’t.
