20 for 2020 key offseason topics: No. 11 The college football players who are already terrific, but are about to go to a whole other level.

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

They were among the best players in college football in 2019, but they either flew a bit under the radar or they didn’t become household names. That’s about to change.

The perfect player who fits the description was on last year’s list. Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard is back, but he’s an established superstar. These five are on the verge of being there.

5. QB Sam Howell, Soph. North Carolina

He’s not all that big, and he’s not all that mobile, and he doesn’t have the biggest arm, but as a true freshman, he showed it.

Originally a key part of Willie Taggart’s 2019 Florida State recruiting class, Mack Brown and company swooped in and flipped Howell to be the main man to run the North Carolina offense. In a rebuilding job, the hope was for the true freshman to be ready right away, and then let him work through his mistakes as the team matured and the talent started to come in.

Instead, Howell came out rocking, bombing away for 245 yards and two touchdowns in the season-opening win over South Carolina, and hitting Miami for 274 yards and two scores with no picks in either one.

The Tar Heels won both games, and the season was off and running.

There were a string of losses the middle of the season, but Howell handled himself like a seasoned pro in close game after close game.

There were a few multi-interception games – the two in the loss to Appalachian State were a problem – but he only threw seven picks on the season and had two or more touchdown passes in every game.

He needs to be more consistent, he took a few too many chances, and there were too many misfires in key moments, but for a true freshman to hit 61% of his passes for 3,641 yards and 38 touchdowns with just seven interceptions in his first year, he wasn’t bad.

ACC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which ACC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit – that’s obviously a huge deal in the ACC – but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best ACC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

5 Coaches Who’ll Be Much Better In Year Two: 20 For 2020 College Football Topics, No. 15

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 15: The five second year head coaches who should have a much stronger Year Two.

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Well that didn’t go so well.

25 college football head coaches are going into their second seasons at the helm, and now is where the production is supposed to start to kick in.

There’s usually a reason as head coach is taking over a program, and most of the time it’s because the last guy got canned. So there’s a grace period because of all the work there is to do, but there’s usually not enough of one.

Even so, Year Two is when the turnarounds are supposed to come. Unfortunately, unlike our piece last season on the 5 Instant Impact New Head Coaches – which turned out to be close to the pin – the 5 Year Two Coaches Who’ll Be Much, Much Better really, really didn’t work.

And why?

Chad Morris at Arkansas … oops. Willie Taggart at Florida State … dropped too soon, but fired. And it goes on from there, so this time around these five have to be right.

Which five got through a slew of first year problems and are about to blow up?

The five coaches about to make the biggest instant impact in their second seasons are …

5. Tom Arth, Akron

There’s nowhere to go but up.

Win one game, and it’s already going to be an improved season. Win three, and it’ll be a huge step forward. Go bowling, and Tom Arth is your coach of the year.

Akron was easily the worst team in college football last season.

It was the only team that failed to win a game. It was dead last in the nation in total offense, couldn’t generate a lick of production on the defensive front, and it got worse as the year went on scoring six points or fewer in five of the last seven games.

[lawrence-related id=508585]

But to give Arth a little bit of credit, he had plenty of work to do after taking over a team team that closed out 2018 on a five-game losing streak.

The 38-year-old worked his way through D-III John Carroll – his alma mater, which he took to three D-III playoff appearances – before taking on the Chattanooga gig. He went 9-13 with the Mocs, but that was enough to get him the Akron job.

So what are things possibly going to be better in Year Two? Experience has to count for something.

With the season slipping away, Akron went young to get the time logged in. Now, if all goes according to plan, ten starters will be back on O, six should return on D, and there’s hope to get off to a hot start with Youngstown State, New Mexico State, Clemson …

Starting 2-0 is a possibility, with home games against UMass and Bowling Green to potentially crank up a few wins.

0-12 to 4-8?

Miami (11-11) vs. Florida State (19-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Miami Will Win

The Hurricanes gave Florida State a run a few weeks ago.

They might be in the midst of a rough run of eight losses in the last ten games, but at least they battled their rival in an overtime loss. It was a loss, but they held up offensively.

To make this a game, they have to own the offensive boards. They’re turning the ball over way too often, and they’re not moving the ball around well, but they have to go against type and attack the glass against an FSU team that doesn’t do well on the boards.

There’s just enough scoring from Chris Lykes and the three guards to keep attacking, but if they’re getting owned on the boards, forget it.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Florida State Will Win

Winning 12 of its last 13 games, FSU is playing well with a nasty defense with the style to make Miami keep screwing up.

Miami turns the ball over way too often and get hit for a whole lot of easy points, and that’s going to happen if the Seminoles start forcing mistakes and keeps blocking shots like hey have all season long.

They lead the ACC in turnover margin thanks to all of the steals. Miami just doesn’t keep the ball moving well enough to overcome its mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen

24 turnovers. That’s what Florida State forced in the first matchup, and they’re what led to the rally needed to pull off the win in Miami.

There won’t be the need to work that hard this time around. The Canes will win on the boards, but they won’t do it enough to overcome a few FSU runs to get ahead and stay there with relative ease.

Miami (6-5) vs. Duke (4-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Miami Will Win

Duke seems to have moved on from this whole playing college football thing for 2019.

The team was doing just fine with a 4-2 start, and then the wheels came off on offense, the defense couldn’t make up for it, and now it’s on a five-game losing streak.

The problem? Three words …

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

They were a problem to start the season, they stopped for a little while, and then they started flowing again and haven’t stopped.

In the seven losses this year, Duke has given the ball away an impressive 25 times. Against FBS teams it’s 3-0 when it doesn’t give up any turnovers, but …

It’s Turnover Chain time.

Miami is painfully inconsistent, but it’s also terrific when it decides it wants to play focused and angry. After the loss to FIU last week – the Canes were -3 in turnover margin – get ready for that all to flip.

Be stunned if the Canes aren’t at least a +2.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Duke Will Win

It’s not like the Blue Devils are facing Stephen F. Austin.

Miami’s running game was spotty to begin with, and now it doesn’t have leading rusher DeeJay Dallas, who suffered an injury in the loss to FIU.

The ground game hasn’t hit 200 yards this season against an FBS team, and it failed to hit 100 yards in a run of five games in six. Even worse, the Canes haven’t rushed for multiple scores in and game so far against an FBSer.

Considering the run D has been an issue this season for Duke, it’s getting a break. It’s also getting a week off from worrying about third down conversions.

Miami was already miserable on the money downs, and then it converted just one of ten tries against FIU last week. On the year, the Canes are second-worst in college football on third downs, converting just 27% of the time.

What’s Going To Happen

This would’ve been the perfect spot for Duke to snap out of it and play like it did earlier in the season … except for that Miami loss to FIU.

The Canes will get a 300-yard passing game from Jarren Williams – without all the mistakes he made against FIU – and the defense will rise up on the road with a dominant performance.

At least, it’ll dominate when it comes to the takeaways.

Miami (6-4) vs. FIU (5-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why FIU Will Win

The Miami offense is just … weird.

It might have exploded for 52 points last week, and it’s have a few outbursts here and there, but it’s just … weird.

It can’t keep the chains moving – it’s AWFUL on third downs – it can’t score well enough when it gets its chances at the end of long drives, and it isn’t getting the production it needs from an offensive line that’s way too leaky in all ways.

FIU doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to worry about, and this might be the game the porous run defense finally gets a little bit of a break.

The Golden Panther secondary is solid enough to get by, the offensive line is fantastic in pass protection, and there’s just enough offensive punch to generate a balanced attack that doesn’t turn the ball over all that much.

Don’t give Miami chances to pull out the Turnover Chain, and reduce the energy level on the other side.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Miami Will Win

Okay you weird Miami offense and mediocre line, blast away for the running game and at least give it a shot.

The Golden Panthers don’t have a pass rush, they don’t come up with enough big plays or takeaways, and they can get pounded on by anyone committing to the ground attack.

FAU ran for 261 yards two weeks ago in the easy, blowout win, and MIddle Tennessee – who has done next to nothing for long stretches this year – ran for 471 yards and six scores.

There are times when the line steps up and shuts things down, but it’s allowing over five yards per carry on the year and gave up over 200 yards five times.

The Canes pushed for close to 200 yards against Louisville in their last game for their best output of the year against an FBS team. Jarren Williams and the passing game might be too good – and he’ll get plenty of time to work – but again, this is the time to try grinding a bit and controlling the clock.

What’s Going To Happen

FIU will be fired up for the local rivalry – especially getting the game at home – to keep this from getting too out of hand, at least for a little while. It lost 31-17 last year, but its offense is too mediocre and the pass rush isn’t there to bother the Hurricane backfield.

On a three-game winning streak – and with wins in four of the last five games – Miami will keep the momentum going with just the date at Duke to go. It’ll come up with a balanced attack to grind through this.

It’ll be close for a half, but Miami will pull away in the second half.
