No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Memphis Offense 3 Things To Know

It’s asking for a whole lot to expect yet another year of unstoppable offensive explosion. The Tigers were tenth in the nation in total offense and eighth in scoring, but UCF and SMU came up with bigger stats.

Everything clicked. Memphis was great at keeping the chains moving, the averaged close to 15 yards per completion, and they were adaptable enough to hit defenses with a variety of superstar playmakers and styles.

New head coach Ryan Silverfield is an offensive line coach kicked up to the top job, but Kevin Johns is back as the offensive coordinator.

Nah … nothing is going to change. Keeping Johns around should ensure that.

Memphis at Purdue, Sept. 12
[jwplayer 2jYxr0eR]

The quarterback situation is settled with Brady White back after throwing for over 4,000 yards with 33 touchdowns and 11 picks, and with junior Connor Adair still the main backup waiting for his turn.

The receiving corps loses home run hitter Antonio Gibson, but Damonte Coxie is back after leading the team with 76 catches for 1,276 yards and nine scores. It’s going to take some work to restock the shelves – Kedarian Jones is done after finishing third on the team with 39 grabs, and TE Joey Magnifico is finished.

On the way is Kundarrius Taylor, Khi Mathieu and Marcayll Jones in the recruiting class to add some instant pop.

The running back corps is interesting. Kenneth Gainwell is one of the nation’s best do-it-all backs, Kylan Watkins is a nice runner who needs the ball more, and ready to roll should be Asa Martin, the former Auburn super-recruit who finally has his landing spot. Gainwell can handle most of the work, but there should be a better rotation.

The line struggled in pass protection and was 111th in the nation in tackles for loss allowed. Three starters are back around top guard Dylan Parham – who could work at center – and needing some new parts to produce right away.

Group Of Five Teams In New Year’s Six Bowl Chase: 20 For 2020 Offseason Topics No. 10

20 for 2020 key offseason topics: No. 10 The top Group of Five teams that should be in the New Year’s Six bowl chase.

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Okay, so we whiffed in last year’s preseason 5 Teams In the New Year’s Six bowl chase piece – didn’t get Memphis, and didn’t have Appalachian State on the list – but that’s a good thing. It’s more fun when it’s not an automatic call.

Houston, Boise State, Western Michigan, UCF twice, and then Memphis. Those are your Group of Five champions who got the automatic bids to the available New Year’s Six game in the College Football Playoff era.

It’s not the CFP, but it’s still a high honor.

All five teams represented themselves well, with the Group of Fivers going 3-3 since the bowl slot was created.

This year, the highest-ranked conference champion from the American Athletic, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West and Sun Belt will automatically get one spot in either the College Football Playoff, GoodYear Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl or Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

To be the team that gets the job done, unless things go totally wacky, 1) it has to go unbeaten or finish with one loss, 2) it will need at least one signature win, and 3) as part of the requirement, it has to win its Group of Five championship.

Which six teams this season have the best shot at getting into the spotlight game?

6. San Diego State Aztecs

Brady Hoke is inheriting a nice team to play around with.

The Aztecs might not have the defense of the last several seasons, but the offense should be stronger, Georgia Tech’s Lucas Johnson is transferring in to battle for the quarterback job, and the offensive front should be among the best in the Mountain West.

Last year’s team had a few whiffs along the way when the offense didn’t work, but all three losses came by six points or fewer.

Going to Toledo won’t be easy, and a run of four road games in six will be tough, but the one Power Five game is at home against UCLA, and there’s no Boise State to deal with in the regular season.

The road games at Nevada, Utah State, Wyoming, BYU and Fresno State might be too much to go unbeaten, but the team should be in the hunt throughout the year.

American Athletic Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which American Athletic schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?s

Which American Athletic schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which American Athletic Conference schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best American Athletic Conference schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

American Athletic Conference Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

Memphis Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario

11-1: Everything goes just fine in the transition to the new coaching staff with wins over Arkansas State, Purdue and Houston to show that nothing changes with a team good enough to keep the 2019 success rolling. With a week off to prepare, the Tigers get by UCF, but there’s a loss along the way – possibly at Cincinnati – with no problems the rest of the way as they get back to the American Athletic Conference title game.

[lawrence-related id=508074]

Memphis Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

6-6: This isn’t the same type of team and there isn’t the same production. A loss at Purdue is bad, but dropping a shootout against Houston is worse – the race for the West will take a serious hit before the end of September. They lose a shootout at SMU and drop the UCF and Cincinnati showdowns, but they avoid a losing season.

Cincinnati is in the American Athletic Conference Championship next week as the champion of the East. Memphis will play the Bearcats in a rematch it if it wins. However, Navy wins the West if it beats Houston and Memphis loses to UC. If the Midshipmen lose to the Cougars, then Memphis wins no matter what.

Got that?

Basically, if you like this game, you’ll probably get a second shot to see them go at it again next week.

The Tigers come in on a five-game winning streak with the AAC’s most efficient passing game, a defense that’s improving enough to not be a liability, and a pass rush with the upside to bother the UC backfield all game long.

The Bearcats haven’t lost since getting whumped by Ohio State back in early September. The O has stalled a bit over the last few weeks, and it’s been doing a bit of bum-slaying throughout the year, but the team doesn’t make big mistakes, the defense allowed the fewest points in the league, and the secondary is great at coming up with big plays.

However, the UC secondary can be beaten.

It survived East Carolina despite giving up 535 yards, it slipped past USF after giving up almost ten yards per throw, and on the year it’s been getting hit for 200 yards with ease by any team able to throw a forward pass.

Memphis will take Round One.

The Bearcat defense will struggle against the high-powered Memphis receiving corps that will open it up right away. UC QB Desmond Ridder will be one, but he won’t be effective enough on third downs to stop the momentum.

Expect a different game in Round Two, but don’t expect the Bearcats to take it easy in this go-round.

What’s Going To Happen

Memphis can’t clinch the West title this week, but it come awfully close. Win this week and against Cincinnati, and it’s playing for the AAC title.

Lose this, and then beating UC is a must. Win this, and it can afford a loss to the Bearcats if the winner of the SMU-Navy game loses next week.

Basically, Memphis could use a win over USF.

The Bulls have lost two straight, and now they have to come up with a win over MU and win at UCF to be bowl eligible.

The team has had its moment over the second half of the year – helped by a win over BYU – but it lost three of its last four against the AAC elite. In the home finale, it has to handle the Tiger passing game that keeps going off.

USF has yet to allow 300 year this year, and it’s been solid overall, but can the O keep up? Memphis has one of the nation’s most efficient passing games for an offense averaging 42 points per game.

The USF offensive line isn’t good enough to establish anything consistently strong. The D will come up with a few takeaways to keep this from getting out of hand, but the O simply won’t be able to keep up.
