Why Temple Will Win

Temple has struggled to get going – losing a heartbreaker against Navy before holding on in a thriller against USF – but the offense has been phenomenal on third downs and the defense has been outstanding.

Okay, to playing two running teams skew the stats, but the secondary really is that good. On offense, the passing game has been able to work thanks to an offensive front that’s great at keeping teams out of the backfield.

The Owls have yet to allow a sack and gave up just three tackles for loss.

The passing game that blew past 500 yards over the last two games should be able to bomb away on the mediocre Tiger secondary, but …

Why Memphis Will Win

The Memphis offense has been unstoppable, going past the 500-yard mark in each of the first two games before rolling by UCF for 703 yards.

Brady White is averaging well over 300 yards per game with 13 touchdowns as he leads one of the nation’s most efficient passing games. The defense might be a problem, but the offense has the ability to hold on to the ball as well as score in bunches.

This might be a high-powered attack, but it leads the American Athletic Conference in time of possession with the ball for close to 33 minutes per game.

What’s Going To Happen

Temple will roll on offense with QB Anthony Russo bombing away at will, and it won’t matter.

Memphis will keep the scoring and the production going, and Temple will blink just enough to get behind. It’ll be another fun Memphis shootout with the two teams combining for over 700 passing yards.

Why UCF Will Win

And here comes the UCF passing game.

It worked just fine in the loss to Tulsa – Dillon Gabriel threw for 330 yards, but he only came up with one touchdown after throwing for four scores in each of the first two games – and now it’s about to hit a Memphis secondary that had no prayer against the SMU air show and had issues against Arkansas State, too.

This is still as explosive and as dangerous as any offense in the country when it gets into a groove. The home run hitters are there in the backfield, the deep ball plays are in place, and despite the issues on defense that give up around 450 yards per game, the takeaways are there.

Why Memphis Will Win

UCF has been weird.

The offense is doing what the offense normally does, but the team has been in firefights in all three games that seemed like they could’ve gone either way.

They went the UCF way in the wins over Georgia Tech and East Carolina, and the other way in the stunning loss to Tulsa.

Turnovers were a bit part of that, too.

The Knights were helped out of a shaky overall performance against Georgia Tech with five takeaways at key times, turning the tight game into a blowout. They generated four turnovers against ECU to take over that game, and against Tulsa …

Even in turnover margin, but the three giveaways mattered.

Memphis has been decent against the run over the first two games, and that’s part of the key here – make UCF one-dimensional. Make the offense press and home to generate a few takeaways.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s supposed to be the American Athletic Conference game of the year, but instead of this being a battle of titanic unbeatens, it’s a question of survival.

That doesn’t mean it won’t be fun.

Both teams are near-locks to run and throw for 200 yards – Memphis is averaging just over 500 yards per game, UCF is averaging 582 – so it’ll likely come down to turnovers.

UCF has yet to play a fully even 60 minute game, and Memphis is still trying to get its legs.

UCF is a wee bit better at taking the ball away than Memphis is.

Why Memphis Will Win

It’s been a rough run getting this season going, beating Arkansas State before getting knocked out for the last few weeks with COVID issues.

The team is rested.

Just like it was last year, the offense is explosive, the passing game is sharp – it started out fantastic – and SMU has to be able to keep up.

SMU might have the offense rolling, but the secondary was picked apart by North Texas even though it generates a good pass rush. The defense does a whole lot of things right, but the overall production still isn’t there. Now it has to deal with an offense that’s going to keep the pressure n for a full four quarters.

Why SMU Will Win

The Mustangs are tuned up and playing well.

Yeah, Memphis might be rested after the last few weeks, but SMU has three games under its belt, it’s going to be in better overall shape, and it’s been a whole lot sharper after making too many mistakes early on.

The Mustangs haven’t turned the ball over win the last two games, penalties haven’t been a problem, and the offense has found its groove with Ulysses Bentley – the nation’s leading rusher – ripping off close to 11 yards per carry to go along with TJ McDaniel being more of a workhorse.

All that, and veteran QB Shane Buechele has been terrific.

What’s Going To Happen

It was one of the best games of 2019. Memphis held off SMU in a 54-48 thriller with the two teams combining for well over 1,000 yards with close to 800 through the air.

Memphis has more talent and the better lines, but SMU will be a bit more seasoned and a bit more balanced at home. The Tiger passing game, though, will come through in the second half with a few late scoring drives to get the season back on track.

The University of Memphis football program has paused all football activities after several people tested positive for COVID-19

The University of Memphis announced on Friday that it will pause all of its football activities after several people within the program tested positive for COVID-19.

According to an article from the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the outbreak might have come from players allegedly being on a party bus after last week’s 37-24 win over Arkansas State. From the report, players were tested three times before the game and then right after, but now upwards of 20 players have reportedly tested positive.

However, Memphis defensive tackle O’Bryan Goodson disputes the report.

But …

Now the American Athletic Conference opener against Houston for Friday night the 18th is in question, as is the following Friday game against UTSA on the road.

Arkansas State is expected to play at Kansas State this weekend.

If the Memphis date with Houston can’t go as scheduled, there would have to be some reworking to do to get it in. Houston doesn’t have any open dates the rest of the way outside of October 3rd.

If Memphis and SMU move their game – scheduled for October 3rd – to October 10th when both the Cougars and Tigers could move their game to the third.

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Arkansas State offense has the chops to keep up with whatever the Memphis attack puts on the board.

It won’t matter if it’s Logan Bonner or Layne Hatcher at quarterback, the Red Wolves will crank up a passing game with the firepower to put up 300 yards through the air and score in bunches.

The Memphis defense should be a bit better as the season goes on under new defensive coordinator Mike McIntyre, but it’s not going to be a brick wall right away. ASU will come up with just enough of a ground game to take some of the pressure off of the rest of the offense.

The Red Wolves get a wee bit of a break defensively with Memphis star RB Kenneth Gainwell choosing to opt out on the 2020 season, but …

Why Memphis Will Win

The Arkansas State defense is going to be in for a long, long day.

Again, the offense should be strong enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but the defensive side that was 124th in the nation last year has to replace a whole slew of big producers from last year’s group.

On the other side, the ASU offensive line might get back a ton of experience, but it was but a soft breeze against most decent pass rushes last year. Now it has to go against a Tiger pass rush that gets back Joseph Dorceus and a whole slew of other active playmakers.

No, the Memphis defense won’t shut down the ASU offense to a dead stop, but it’ll hold its own just enough in key moments to turn good drives into field goal attempts.

What’s Going To Happen

Be upset is there aren’t a whole lot of fireworks.

Even without Gainwell, Memphis and new head coach Ryan Silverfield – in his first regular season game as the main man – will be more than fine. The offense should be able to keep the big plays from last season going against a mediocre ASU defense.

The Red Wolves will do their part to make Memphis keep pressing. They won’t go away, but they won’t be able to keep up in the fourth quarter.

In a new era, look for the Tigers to make a statement, at least offensively.

5. AAC 2020 Preview

Don’t start worrying about the College Football Playoff – that will be what it’s going to be.

Of course, with the Big Ten and Pac-12 out of the picture, this is the perfect time for a Group of Five team to finally break through the ceiling, but the same unspoken rules are still likely going to apply.

Fair or not, it still will likely take nothing short of an undefeated championship season to get into the club – and it would help if there’s a multi-loss champ among the Power 5 programs.

But again, don’t use this of all seasons to obsess about that. This could be the year when the national spotlight shines on the conference for more than just one big Saturday night game.

With UConn taking off for life as an independent – it’s postponing football until 2021 – this now becomes a tight 11-team league with a season that should see a whole slew of twists and turns on the way to coming up with the top two.

Tulsa beat UCF last year and almost pulled off wins over Memphis and SMU. This year’s version is better, so if that’s the possible weakest team, look out.

The stars are still the stars. UCF and Memphis are going to be fantastic, Cincinnati has top 25 upside no matter who was going to play this year, and it’s possible that Houston really was on to something last season when it used the campaign as one big practice for this year.

Navy is still fantastic, Temple is going to be a problem for the top teams, the SMU offense isn’t taking any sort of a step back, and Tulane is solid across the board.

East Carolina has a fun, dangerous offense, and USF has a whole lot of talent in place for new head man Jeff Scott.

So yeah, if a team can get through all of that unbeaten and win the American Athletic Conference title, the CFP types really will take notice … maybe.
