What are the 25 winningest programs to not make the College Football Playoff? Here are the top schools in the CFP era to miss out on the fun.

Cincinnati and Michigan were able to make the College Football Playoff last season. Their doors might have been blown off by Alabama and Georgia, respectively, but they at least brought some new energy to the mini-tournament.

The College Football Playoff has only been around for eight seasons and just 13 schools – Alabama, Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington – have played in it and just five won it all.

That means 90% of the FBS college football programs haven’t been in the post-season – at least the version that matters – since this grand experiment started.

That’s the equivalent of only 36 college basketball programs making the NCAA Tournament over the last eight years – which is a good idea, by the way, but I digress.

What college football programs were able to win a lot of games over the last eight years without the playoff payoff? 25 have won 60 or more games in eight seasons – averaging 7.5 a year, but it’s better than that considering some played a short schedule in 2020 – without getting the call.

If you didn’t get to 60 victories – no Texas, or Tennessee, or Nebraska, Michigan State, or North Carolina – you don’t get on the list. So with that, here are the 25 winningest teams to not make the College Football Playoff.

Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Strong

Bottom Line: USC might be last on this list, but it’s got the best shot of going to the College Football Playoff this year with Lincoln Riley and a loaded all-star team ready to roll. The 2020 team would’ve had a case for the CFP if it won the Pac-12 title to finish 6-0 – it lost to Oregon, but no unbeaten Power Five champ has ever been left out. It’s been a disappointing run since going 12-1 in 2008. That’s all about to change.

Bottom Line: The Wolfpack have been strongly consistent since Dave Doeren took over, but they haven’t been able to get a turn in the ACC Championship mix – being in the same division with Clemson has something to do with that. This should be his best team yet, and if it can somehow get by the Tigers on the road, there’s a real shot at going 12-1 with an ACC Championship and a CFP shot. That’s a massive if, though.

Bottom Line: Miami flirted with something fun in 2017 with a 10-0 start before losing the last three games. However, had it beaten Clemson in the ACC Championship – it lost 38-3 – it would’ve been in the CFP. This year’s schedule is too tough for a reloading team – with road games at Clemson and Texas A&M – but new head coach Mario Cristobal might just restore the glory in a hurry.

Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: None

Bottom Line: Now-Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck led the way to a phenomenal 13-0 regular season with a MAC title in 2016, and it still wasn’t enough to get near the College Football Playoff. The Broncos have been good ever since, but they haven’t been able to come close to repeating the glory. They’ll be strong this season, but even if they can win at Michigan State and against Pitt – and can run through the MAC unbeaten – it still shouldn’t be enough for a CFP shot.

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year

QB Grayson McCall, Jr. Coastal Carolina

The star in the emergence of Coastal Carolina football, McCall has been one of the nation’s most efficient and effective passers over the last two seasons hitting 71% of his throws for close to 5.400 yards with 53 touchdowns and six picks.

He’s able to run – 870 yards and 11 career touchdowns – hit the deep ball, and get the high-octane attack rolling at will. Coastal Carolina has some rebuilding to do, but McCall will make everyone around him better.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year

LB Carlton Martial, Sr. Troy

The newly configured Sun Belt is loaded with do-it-all linebackers, but no one does-it-all more more than Martial. He’s not all that big, but the 5-9, 210-pound flash gets all over the field as a bit of a hybrid playmaker.

Going into his fifth season, he already has 443 tackles, ten sacks, 47.5 tackles for loss, and five picks with seven forced fumbles on the resumé.

Marshall Thundering Herd Preview 2022

Ummmmm, okay.

Marshall went from being an FCS powerhouse, to a MAC powerhouse, to a major player in Conference USA.

Considering the heavy losses taken by the American Athletic Conference, the goal and push might have been to step up there. Instead, the program joined Old Dominion, James Madison, and Southern Miss to make the move to the Sun Belt.

Now it’s time to go be a powerhouse there.

2021 might have ended with a thud – losing three games in the last four – and four of the six losses were by a touchdown or less in a frustrating run, but second year head coach Charles Huff has a strong base of talent returning, the transfer portal provided a ton of help, and there’s a buzz.

Marshall is a part of the Sun Belt fun. It’s about to make a rising league a whole lot better.

Marshall Thundering Herd Preview 2022: Offense

The offense stumbled late with just 21 points or fewer in three of its last four games, but it still finished second overall in Conference USA averaging 457 yards and 33 points per game. The skill parts will be among the best in the Sun Belt if the new starting quarterback can come through as expected, but …

The offensive line is the big deal going into fall camp. All should be fine with a little bit of time, but the group that led C-USA in fewest tackles for loss allowed and was solid for the ground game has to replace a bulk of the key parts. The starting five will be okay, but the depth will take a while.

Fortunately, the running backs are fantastic.

Rasheen Ali earned All-Conference USA honors with over 1,400 yards and 23 rushing scores with 45 catches, and coming in to help the cause is Khalan Laborn from Florida State.

Can Henry Colombi really get it done? The former Texas Tech quarterback comes in to replace Grant Wells – who bolted for Virginia Tech – but Cam Fancher and a few other options will give it a push for the gig. No matter who’s under center, the receiving corps will be strong.

All-star leading receiver Corey Gammage is back after making 78 grabs, and even with top targets Willie Johnson and TE Xavier Gaines done, there are more than enough veteran returning – and some help from Florida State’s Bryan Robinson signing on – to make the O go.

Marshall Thundering Herd Preview 2022: Defense

The defense should’ve been better. It lived in the backfield and was among the best in the country in pass efficiency defense, but this group got gouged against the run. There was a lot of bending without a lot of breaking, though – the D gave up close to 400 yards per game, but only 24 points per outing.

The fun will continue in the Sun Belt.

The Thundering Herd brought the production from everywhere. LB Eli Neal led the team with just 5.5 sacks – nine defenders had two more more sacks – and the ends and linebackers are in place to keep wreaking havoc.

Koby Cumberlander is a dangerous hybrid on the line, all the linebackers return, and the interior might have just upgraded with Isaiah Gibson coming in from Kentucky and Anthony Watts joining from Purdue.

The secondary loses some stars, but it returns two great pieces to work around. Micah Abraham and Steven Gilmore could be the Sun Belt’s best corner tandem, but the transfer portal has to help the safety situation that loses three of the team’s top five tacklers. Isaiah Norman from Austin Peay and Andre Sam from McNeese State should be ready right away.

The conference has only been doing football since 2001, and it was always the land of the paycheck programs – the ones the big boys scheduled for an easy 55-3 win on Homecoming.

In one of the shockers of the conference realignment changes over the last year, the Sun Belt wasn’t picked off in the expansion run. Instead, it added James Madison from the FCS and snagged Marshall, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion from Conference USA.

It was a battle to see if Conference USA could hold on to the Thundering Herd, the Golden Eagles, and the Monarchs through the football season, but the divorce is final, and those three are getting remarried right away to go along with a fun James Madison program.

How ugly did it get? Both Conference USA and the Sun Belt released their 2022 schedules including those three teams, but the Sun Belt has their teams.

The Sun Belt East will be made up of Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion. The West will be Arkansas State, Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy, and ULM.

No, it’s not time for the SEC to start shaking, but it’s an amazing story that the Sun Belt is not only surviving, but it’s getting a whole lot stronger and more entertaining.

The Golden Panthers are going to keep on shooting.

They might have issues turning the ball over, and the defense is too often a rumor, but they’re going to keep on firing from three.

They’re not great at hitting their shots, but they keep taking them to generate threes in bulk. Best of all, they’ve been able to beat Marshall twice even though they weren’t rolling from the outside.

On the flip side, Marshall can’t hit a thing from the outside – even though it takes a ton of threes – and it doesn’t do enough from the free throw line and from the field to make up for it.

– Head coach Billy Napier might be off living his best life as the head coach of the Florida Gators, but this is still a fantastic Louisiana team coming in on a 12-game winning streak with a Sun Belt championship.

The offense might not have been quite as explosive and as fun as the 2020 version, but the team got through game after game with a strong defense, an offense that was among the most mistake-free in all of college football, and by doing all of the little things right.

– On the flip side, Marshall found plenty of new and creative ways to turn the ball over, couldn’t stop the run, and it could never seem to find any consistency. However, the passing game was fun, the wins came against the teams it was supposed to beat, and the pass rush got their mail in the opposing backfield.

– To win this, the Herd have to open it up. The passing attack has to break Louisiana out of its controlled style, and this will need to be a bit of a shootout to make this a tad more frenetic.

Does Marshall have the defense to keep up with the red hot Bailey Zappe and WKU offense?

Not sure. The D hasn’t faced anyone who can throw the ball with any regularity other than East Carolina, and Holton Ahlers and company went for close to 400 yards in the Herd win.

UAB went for 250 a few weeks ago and won, and Charlotte went for 245 last week and lost.

Zappe gets out of bed with 300 passing yards already locked in, and he pushes for 400 just after breakfast.

Marshall has a problem against good running teams, but it’s about experience something new with this.

Why Marshall Will Win

The WKU pass defense is a bit of a rumor.

Sort of like the Marshall season, WKU hasn’t faced a ton of teams that can throw, but the ones that could early on in the season went for 300 yards on a regular basis – and won.

Rice – not exactly the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of offense – cranked up 380 through the air in an attempt to keep up the pace.

Marshall has the offense to keep up with the balance to run well and with Grant Wells dangerous enough bomb away.

He chilled on the picks after a rough start – just three in the last five games, Marshall – again, against a slew of mediocre teams, but … – has the No. 1 pass defense in Conference USA, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Here we go. The winner gets UTSA for the Conference USA championship.

WKU does a lot of things right, but it hasn’t beat a truly good team with this attack.

It came close in battles with Army – that was a case of late points to make the 38-35 score look good – Indiana, UTSA, and to some extent, Michigan State, and lost.

The wins are all over the okay-to-lousy teams.

Marshall has the offense to keep up with Zappe, and it’s got just enough of a defense to hold serve.
