No alternate helmet for the Browns in 2022

All 14 alternate or throwback helmets have been announced for 2022:

The wave after wave of alternative helmet announcements is over, it seems. While the Cleveland Browns announced their 75th-anniversary uniform last year, more teams got in on the possibility of uniform changes this year.

Previously, the NFL did not allow teams to have multiple helmets preferring that each team had one standard version always worn with the various uniforms the team had. Becoming a bit more flexible, with profit as an important factor, the league opened up some creative options.

As covered yesterday, that led the Chicago Bears to don a very familiar orange-colored helmet. While it lacked the Browns trademark “oreo stripe” and added the letter “C” to the side, there is now another orange helmet in the NFL.

The majority of alternative helmets were given a black makeover while a few teams decided to go with throwback helmets this year:

Some fans are still hoping that Cleveland adds an orange jersey to the rotation but that has repeatably been shot down as a rumor that is unlikely to come to fruition.

With all 14 teams being announced, no white helmet for the Browns in 2022. Given the tradition behind the helmet, it is fitting but, probably, there will come a time when some new version of the team’s iconic helmet will exist.

Browns social media trolls Bears over new orange helmet

The orange may not be oranger but the Bears helmet looks very familiar:

The trend of alternate helmets has swept the NFL this offseason. With the NFL finally approving some creativity for teams’ helmets, it is a chance for teams to make a fashion statement. With a lot of different color patterns around the NFL, it was exciting to imagine what could be for some of the teams.

Alas, a vast majority of those helmets have ended up being black.

For the Cleveland Browns, the orange helmet is their logo, their trademark and what they are known for. While some fans might like to see some kind of alternative helmet with a logo (or a B as rookie WR David Bell drew earlier this offseason), the organization seems like they are sticking with their standard.

Earlier Sunday, the Chicago Bears unveiled their alternative helmet. Unlike many of the teams, the Bears went with an orange one. The Browns social media account took notice quickly:

It will be interesting if another team, like the Denver Broncos, have an alternative helmet this year and go in the orange direction.

Chicago’s version lacks Cleveland’s signature “oreo” stripe down the middle and has the Bears’ “C” on the side.

If the Browns ever do an alternative helmet, brown or white could be used as well as some kind of logo or letter on the signature orange helmet. For now, the team’s social media is just having fun trolling Chicago for their new orange helmets.

Perrion Winfrey signs rookie deal, Browns draft class all signed before training camp

While a few teams haven’t completed their draft class signings, the Browns took care of their’s with Winfrey signing on the dotted line:

With training camp opening up on Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns 90-man roster is now full. With the addition of QB Josh Rosen, the Browns had one roster spot available which was earmarked to finalize their draft class signings.

Finally Friday, DT Perrion Winfrey signed his contract as the last member of the team’s 2022 NFL draft class.

Winfrey’s signing, and at the time K Cade York’s, seemingly was held up by the Houston Texans giving out more guaranteed money to their fourth-round pick.

Winfrey arrived Friday to sign his deal and complete his physical to begin training camp. He is expected to compete immediately for playing time in the middle of Cleveland’s defensive line. Making the preseason ‘All-Rookie Team’ makes sense given his opportunity.

The fiery, fast tackle can penetrate to make life difficult for offensive lines but has the strength to hold the point of attack as well. Looking back at game film with DL coach Chris Kiffin provided insight into his game.

On Thursday, Brad Stainbrook was the first to report Winfrey’s signing. A few draft selections around the NFL still remained unsigned going into the weekend but Cleveland has their class locked up.

WR David Bell on PUP list creates concern

Hopefully just a blip on the radar but Bell’s PUP status is concerning based on his expected role and type of injury:

With rookies and quarterbacks reporting on Friday for training camp, the Cleveland Browns got some discouraging news. Rookie WR David Bell will be placed on the physically unable to perform list as camp opens. Bell has an issue with a foot that kept him from passing his physical.

The good news for the Browns is that PUP at this time of the year doesn’t have the same restrictions as during the season. Whenever Bell passes his physical is when he can return to practice.

The bad news for Cleveland is that Bell was expected to have a big role as a rookie and foot issues can be problematic in multiple ways.

Bell was expected to step in as an important part of the team’s slot receiver rotation. With great route running and great hands, Bell is going to be given a chance to replace WR Jarvis Landry. It is likely he still gets that chance but how long he misses camp could greatly diminish his impact as a rookie.

With Bell missing time, WR/KR/PR Jakeem Grant and WR Amari Cooper will likely get most of the time in the slot. Donovan Peoples-Jones and Anthony Schwartz are more straight line, outside receivers so far in their careers.

Cole Beasley, Emmanuel Sanders and Danny Amendola are three of the veteran slot receiver options available on the market if Bell’s injury lingers.

As the foundations of body movements for football players, foot injuries can create systematic issues for players and require caution. A problem that low on the body can create impact and compensation issues up the leg and back.

Last year, Tony Fields II dealt with a foot issue and ended up playing in just 10 games and producing just two tackles.

Hopefully, Cleveland gets Bell back quickly and up to speed with no lingering issues but, given his expected role, a frustrating start to camp.

Watch: Browns RB Nick Chubb squats over 600 pounds

Chubb squatted two complete reps of 610 pounds on a tsunami bar

Browns fans are often treated to the freakish athletic exploits of defensive end Myles Garrett. But “Flash” has some serious competition in the physical freak department from one of his teammates.

Running back Nick Chubb put on an astonishing display on the squat rack at his offseason training facility. Chubb executed two clean reps of squatting 610 pounds on a tsunami (flexible) barbell.

Kids, don’t try this at home…

Browns begin to report to training camp on Friday

Between today and, hopefully, the Super Bowl, the only respite for Browns players will be the bye week:

Its beginning to feel a lot like football. Not the cool breeze of the fall where leaves are changing colors but the hot blistering sun of training camp with humidity sending sweat pouring out of everyone.

For the Cleveland Browns, training camp officially opens on Wednesday with the team and the league still awaiting a decision by Judge Sue Robinson. QB Deshaun Watson could be facing discipline but whether there is discipline and, if there is, how long he is suspended is all up in the air.

Yet, Friday starts the process of players reporting with rookies and quarterbacks reporting to the team. This allows the players to get walked through everything for the first time as rookies and for the quarterbacks to be prepared to lead the offense.

Once players start reporting and taking physicals and conditioning tests, we may get some added to the Physically Unable to Perform list. For Cleveland, OT Jack Conklin is the biggest name to watch coming back from his knee injury last year.

The Browns 2022 year starts today and, hopefully, ends at the Super Bowl. Only the bye week will provide a break for the players between now and then.

Two receivers join Browns workout with Rosen, McCarron

The Browns needed receivers to catch passes from Rosen and McCarron. Shepherd and Dillon joined the team’s workout today:

The Cleveland Browns worked out a total of four players in advance of the opening of training camp for the team. Quarterbacks Josh Rosen and A.J. McCarron get the headlines due to their position and name value. Rosen, a former first-round pick, and McCarron, a player Hue Jackson really wanted the team to trade for, were two of the limited supply of quarterbacks available at this point.

Rosen was signed following the workout.

The team needed players for Rosen and McCarron to throw to for the session on Thursday so two receivers were brought in. Darrius Shepherd and Derrick Dillon caught passes from the pair in Berea.

The 5’11” Shepherd was with the Green Bay Packers for two seasons starting in 2019 before bouncing around on practice squads in 2021. In two seasons with the Packers, Shepherd was targeted 10 times, hauling in six of those passes for 47 yards.

He spent time with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL this year.

Also standing 5’11”, Dillon is known for his speed. He ran a 4.29 at LSU’s pro day. Already 26, Dillon left LSU in 2019 with 51 catches in 31 career games.

Both receivers were likely brought in to help the team evaluate Rosen and McCarron but are names to keep in mind if injuries decimate the team’s depth.

Browns add QB Josh Rosen before training camp opens

A former first-round pick, Rosen’s career has struggled greatly since entering the league in the same draft as former Browns QB Baker Mayfield:

The Cleveland Browns have made another move at the quarterback position. With Baker Mayfield with the Carolina Panthers and Deshaun Watson facing the possibility of a suspension, Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs were the only certainties at the most important position in the NFL.

With an earlier report that the team may be looking at adding a backup quarterback, we took a look at the limited options still available this close to training camp.

Earlier today, the team had brought in Josh Rosen and A.J. McCarron for a workout as they looked for another arm for camp. Rosen must have performed better than McCarron as the team will be signing him to the roster:

Rosen was drafted in the same first round as Mayfield but has bounced around to a number of teams. He has played in 24 games, 14 as a rookie with the Arizona Cardinals, completing just 54% of his passes. His 12 touchdown to 21 interception ratio is another concerning statistic.

While Rosen is a known name, he has an uphill battle to make the team and turn his career around with the Browns in 2022.

What the Browns are getting in Isaac Rochell

What the Browns are getting in Isaac Rochell #Browns

The Cleveland Browns are continuing to make moves in free agency and have decided to add depth to the defensive line. It is no secret that the interior of the defensive line is viewed as a tad bit of a weakness, but perhaps adding Isaac Rochell will help fix that.

In an effort to add more veteran bodies to the line, Cleveland signed Isaac Rochell, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Rochell previously spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, but that’s enough of his past. Let’s take a dive into what he can bring to the Browns.

Report: Browns working out QBs Josh Rosen, A.J. McCarron ahead of training camp

A report from ESPN indicates the Cleveland Browns are working out QBs Josh Rosen and A.J. McCarron ahead of training camp

With no resolution on the Deshaun Watson disciplinary front, the Cleveland Browns are now exploring other quarterback options to bolster the roster behind backup Jacoby Brissett.

According to a report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Browns have brought in veterans Josh Rosen and A.J. McCarron to audition for a potential role with the team. Fowler left open the possibility of others as well.

McCarron nearly became a Browns QB during Hue Jackson’s tenure, but a snafu held up an agreed-upon trade with the Cincinnati Bengals. McCarron has bounced around several NFL teams, spending the 2021 campaign on the Atlanta Falcons’ injured reserve.

Rosen was once believed to be in the mix to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, where the Browns ultimately selected Baker Mayfield. He’s fallen out of the league quickly since being the No. 10 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals.

The Browns currently have only Josh Dobbs behind Brissett to start training camp. No ruling on Watson’s availability has been made as of yet.
