Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Eastern Michigan is bowl eligible, and now it’s time to have some fun and secure a spot. Six wins made the program eligible. Seven wins would all but cement a bowl.

It’s not like the team is doing anything amazing, but it’s phenomenally consistent lately. It’s going to throw for just under 200 yards, it’ll run for around 120 yards, and it’ll be great to keep things moving and control the clock.

As always, Kent State doesn’t care about possession time – it’s called the FlashFast style for a reason – but in this, EMU grinding it out a bit against a D that can’t stop teams from moving the chains will matter.

However …

Bowl Projections

Why Kent State Will Win

Kent State needs this win and it’s about to pull out all the offensive stops.

It needs to win this and beat Buffalo to get bowl eligible, and there’s still a path to winning the East if everyone else melts down.

Basically, in terms of desperation, Kent State is there.

It’s this simple. Kent State wins when it runs wild – it’s 3-0 when running for 230 yards or more and 1-6 when it doesn’t – and Eastern Michigan is 0-3 against FBS teams when it allows 230 yards or more.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Kent State will run for over 230 yards as it plays well at home and keeps the mistakes to a minimum.

Eastern Michigan will be balanced and it won’t screw up enough to give away a slew of easy points off of field position, but it won’t matter.

Being at home will matter for the Golden Flashes – the O will be a wee bit sharper – even though Eastern Michigan is terrific on the road.

Kent State vs Bowling Green Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The running game keeps on rocking.

The rest of the Golden Flash season has been a disappointment – the team is fighting for its bowl survival, needing to win out to get a bid – but the ground attack that’s the best in the MAC rips off yards in chunks with 200 yards or more in four of the last five games.

Bowling Green’s defense has problems against teams that can throw – and Kent State can do that – and it’s 0-2 when allowing 200 rushing yards or more. It’s a small sample size, but the second-best team in the MAC – Buffalo – ran for 280 yards.

Kent State should be able to rip off at least 200, but …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The Kent State pass defense hasn’t been close.

It doesn’t take the ball away enough – just three picks in the last seven games – and allows 284 yards per game. The Bowling Green offense should be able to throw to keep things moving.

The defense that’s great at coming up with sacks should be able to get in the backfield enough to be disruptive, and the takeaways should matter. The Falcons are 3-0 when coming up with three or more takeaways and forced multiple turnovers in six of the nine games.

Kent State’s defense has forced multiple turnovers twice, with three of the nine coming against Georgia.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

2015. That’s the last time Bowling Green got to a bowl game. It hasn’t won more than four games in any season since then.

Not only is it a win away from being bowl eligible, but it’ll stay in the mix for the MAC East title.

Kent State has the offense to pull off the upset, but it’s 3-1 at home, 0-5 on the road, and this is Senior Night for the Falcons. With road games at Toledo and Ohio to close, the pressure is on to win now, or else.

Ball State vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

The Cardinals have to be able to get their offense moving, and the Kent State defense should be able to help the cause.

They like to move quickly, but no one gets going like the Kent State offense. It might go against type, but the chance to control the clock and the tempo could be there for a Ball State attack that’s been struggling to consistently put  up points.

Fortunately, the Golden Flashes have massive problems against the run – Ball State should be able to rumble for 200 yards behind a strong line.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 9

Why Kent State Will Win

If the FlashFast style of offense works for Kent State, Ball State doesn’t have the offense to keep up. The Cardinals aren’t exactly slow-and-stodgy, but Kent State does the whole quick attack thing better.

The big flaw for the Golden Flashes is a secondary that gives up way too many big plays, but that’s not a concern with Ball State.

There’s no real downfield passing game to worry about, and the scoring punch just isn’t there with just 25 points or fewer in four of the last five games.

Ball State will try relying on its defense, but …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Kent State runs better than anyone in the MAC.

The ground attack should get over 200 yards as it keeps the Ball State defense on its heels all game long. This will be close throughout – the Golden Flash defense will give up plenty of yards – but the Cardinals won’t be able to cash in.

Kent State vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flash offense has stated to perk up.

It wasn’t its normal FlashFast self against a nasty schedule, but it kicked back in once MAC play started with the passing game rolling for over 700 yards in the last two weeks. The O still goes 100 miles per hour, no one in the MAC is better at hitting the downfield passes, and everything is there to keep up with the Rocket attack.

Toledo does a lot of things right, but the passing attack is hit or miss, there aren’t a ton of plays happening behind the line, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Toledo Will Win

The Rockets are finally rolling.

There’s no dogging the blowout loss at Ohio State, but the missed putt against San Diego State and its awful offense was unforgivable. Even so, everything is working once MAC play started with the offense taking advantage of everything in easy wins over Central Michigan and Northern Illinois.

The O is just fine on its own, but it’s the defense that stepped up with seven takeaways in the last two games. It’ll give up a whole bunch of yards, but as long as the D is making plays, everything is fine.

Kent State has chilled on the turnovers, but it’s not above giving them up in bunches.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Really, who wants to have some fun?

Both defenses are a bit better than they get credit for, but that’s about to go out the window in this with both offenses going off right out of the gate.

Toledo can’t stop anyone from throwing, and Kent State will throw well. Kent State’s defense isn’t going to stop Toledo from doing what it wants with a good balance to go along with the explosion.

The Rockets will be just a wee bit better and more efficient at home.

Miami University vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flashes got the O going again.

Of course it was going to be tough against Washington, Oklahoma, and Georgia on the road, but when it was time to get going against a team its own side, Kent State came up with 736 yards in last week’s 31-24 win over Ohio.

Miami University isn’t moving the chains well enough, the passing game isn’t going down the field, and the other side isn’t generating enough plays behind the line, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Miami University Will Win

Kent State’s offense might be great, but the defense keeps having problems. It wasn’t just that the D couldn’t handle the road games against the big names, it got blasted by the Ohio passing game last week in a game that was much closer than it should’ve been.

There isn’t anything pretty about what Miami does, but it’ll take the ball away a few times in this and the running game should work. It has to keep the score low, control the clock for over 35 minutes, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Miami will keep up because the Kent State defense won’t generate enough pressure up front to bother anyone in the backfield, but then things will stall. The Golden Flashes will come up with the fourth quarter points the RedHawks won’t.

Ohio vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

Will the Ohio offense show up?

It was great against Florida Atlantic and Fordham, bad against Penn State and Iowa State, and it has the passing game to bother a Kent State defense that’s far better this season, but not amazing.

The Bobcats need to QB Kurtis Rourke to stay in a groove. He bombed away for 537 yards against Fordham, is averaging close to 300 yards per game, he’s able to hit the big plays down the field.

The attack is there to keep up, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Kent State Will Win

The Ohio defense is getting picked clean.

Again, playing Penn State and Iowa State was a problem, but Fordham was able to complete 77% of its passes for over 500 yards and six touchdowns in the 59-52 Bobcat win.

And now the Kent State offense gets to eat.

No, it hasn’t taken off yet, but there are three key reasons: at Washington, at Oklahoma, and at Georgia.

On the plus side, the defense was able to hold up relatively well – at least for the Kent State D. The parts are there to finally get this going, especially with the ground attack.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Apparently, Kent State is so good that America is starting to question whether or not Georgia can play college football anymore.

The Golden Flashes lost 39-22 – it wasn’t as close as the final score, even though Georgia never pulled away until late – but again, now the offense will show up in what should be a fun and wild shootout.

Georgia vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flashes have the offense, and they have the ability to score in a hurry if it’s all working. They tuned up on LIU last week in a 63-10 win with the passing game clucking, the rushing attack ripping off yards in chunks, and with everything looking like it’s supposed to.

Even in the losses to Washington and Oklahoma the O moved a bit, converting on third downs hasn’t been much of a problem, and the downfield passing game is there.

Georgia is obviously good at this football thing, but if Collin Schlee can get a little time to work, and if the Dawgs are relaxing a bit in the middle of the sandwich between SEC road games at South Carolina and Missouri, there’s a shot Kent State can put a few points on the board.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Georgia Will Win

To be fair, the Kent State defense hasn’t been as miserable as past versions. It’s not good, but it’s all relative – at least the D isn’t getting hit with astronomical numbers.

However, the pass defense is getting ripped up – allowing close to 300 yards per game – there aren’t enough takeaways to make up for the problems, and not it’s going against a Bulldog O that’s been nothing short of perfect so far.

No turnovers, Stetson Bennett is playing like a Heisman candidate, the running game is doing what it wants to, and there hasn’t been a need to work all that hard thanks to big starts.

Yeah, Kent State has an offense that can potentially come up with big scoring bursts, but it doesn’t have enough to keep up if and when Georgia gets rolling. And …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Georgia defense is too good to let this get interesting.

The playbook of the national champions will continue. Get up fast, put big points on the board, and let the D do the rest. Georgia should have this done after a few drives, but the Golden Flashes will go on a few decent drives.

Oklahoma vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flashes have the offense to keep up.

The three turnovers hurt in the 45-20 loss to Washington, and there weren’t the bursts of explosion like there needed to be, but the attack has the upside to go fast and come up with points in chunks.

There’s a slight lookahead factor here with a trip to Nebraska coming up next for Oklahoma, and it’s going to be tested more defensively than it was in the 45-13 win over UTEP.

It was an easy win, but the secondary got dinked and dunked on a bit, the passing game was more about the big plays than the steady completions, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Oklahoma’s offense will get to stretch its legs a little bit.

UTEP wasn’t able to put up much resistance in the first quarter, but that D will look like the 2000 Baltimore Ravens compared to what Kent State is bringing to Norman.

The Golden Flashes try. They have guys who can move, they’ll get behind the line once in a while, but defense is something just to pass the time before the offense can try to do all of its fun stuff.

New OU QB Dillon Gabriel was fine, the running game was great, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This should be over after a few drives.

Kent State will put some points on the board and make things a wee bit more interesting than UTEP did, but Oklahoma’s offense will be balanced, the big plays will be there, and if it wants to put a monster number on the board, it will.

It’ll hold up in the fourth quarter, but the backups will still generate gashing runs.

Washington vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The offense is still going to go 100 miles per hour, it’s going to still be dangerous, and it’s going to keep on pressing even without a slew of the stars form the last few years.

The running backs are very quick and can break off yards in chunks. There’s no chance Kent State can power away on the Dawg defensive front, but it can spread the defense out, get into space, and make big things happen while keeping the D on its heels.

Collin Schlee has been around long enough be ready to handle the starting quarterback gig – he was behind Dustin Crum over the last few years – and he has a loaded receiving corps to work with.

However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington Will Win

Defense is optional at Kent State.

It was the worst in the MAC last season, it gave up more first downs than anyone in college football, and it can be moved on any way you want to try.

Washington’s offense is getting a reboot under new head coach Kalen DeBoer. Indiana transfer Michael Penix Jr. gets to bomb away in the attack, the running backs are there, and the offensive line that needs a little bit to get it all together is playing the exact right defensive front to warm up.

The defense has the linebackers to keep the FlashFast style of offense from busting off too many big plays. The secondary might be replacing NFL corners, but it should be okay, the line won’t give up anything between the hashmarks, and there won’t be any issues as long as the O doesn’t have a problem with …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers. That’s the only thing that can keep this from getting ugly.

Kent State might not bring a defense, but it will attack and take the ball away in bunches. The idea is for the D to do just enough to the O can do what it does.

Washington will win on its power. Penix Jr. is experienced enough to play within the flow of the game and not force anything, and this will be a much, much different start to the season – the Huskies lost 13-7 to Montana to kick off last year.

Kent State Golden Flashes Preview 2022

Now it’s time to see just how well this whole thing works.

The FlashFast style of offense under Sean Lewis has completely turned the program around, and it’s easy to point to the exact moment when it happened.

In 2019, poor old Kent State was chugging along to another awful losing year with a 3-6 record and Buffalo hammering away, and then came the stunning comeback for a Golden Flash win, then came the four game winning streak with a bowl victory, and then came the run of three straight years without a losing record for the first time since 1972 to 1974.

Bowl appearances aren’t normal at Kent State. They are now under Lewis.

However, last year’s team was loaded with veterans and firepower, the sixth-year senior factor played a big role, and it all led to an appearance in the MAC Championship and a trip to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The Golden Flashes lost both games, and now they’re all but starting over in several areas.

But the high-powered offensive system should still be great, the defense at least has veterans – to be kind – and this should still be fun.

Kent State Golden Flashes Preview 2022: Offense

The O will still roll fast, score fast, work fast even with a whole lot of new parts to the machine. The Golden Flashes finished fourth in the nation in total offense averaging close to 500 yards per game. It has to do a better job of closing out drives with points, and time of possession is totally meaningless, but the No. 3 rushing attack in college football should be just fine because of …

The running backs – they’re great. The O found its twosome in Marques Cooper and Xavier Williams – two smallish quick backs – who combine for over 2,000 yards and 14 touchdowns. They’re the lightning, and 243-pound Bryan Bradford will bring the power for the harder yards.

The O line loses just about everyone, but there’s just enough talent back to build around. Jack Bailey is a versatile option on the inside, and there’s size, but this group is going to need a little work. The transfer portal is bringing in a few options.

Dustin Crum was everything. He was the one who ran it all, knew how to keep everything moving, and was ultra-efficient as an all-around playmaker. He’s done, and now it’s up to Collin Schlee to try cranking up the production in place of the guy who threw for close to 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns and ran for over 700 yards with 12 scores.

The receiving corps is going to be great thanks to the return of all-star Dante Cephas. He’s the go-to guy, but he’s not alone with Ja’Shuan Poke and Devontez Walker two good prospects about to do a whole lot more.

And then there’s the …

Kent State Golden Flashes Preview 2022: Defense

The offense had to keep rocking and rolling to make up for all of the problems on the other side. The Kent State defense was the worst in the MAC, gave up more first downs than anyone in the country, and couldn’t generate any sort of pass rush or come up with third down stops. What it did do, though, was take the ball away.

The veterans are there on the defensive front. There’s size in 330-pound CJ West on the nose, and the big ends as least have the bulk and experience to potentially hold up better. Getting into the backfield more would be a huge plus.

The defensive back seven gets back leading tackler Dean Clark at safety – he didn’t make every play for the D, but it sure seemed like it – but the next seven tacklers off of last year’s defense are done. The linebacking corps isn’t totally staring over, but it’s close. There’s no size, but this will be a quick group.

Montre Miller is a solid all-around corner who led the team with four picks, but the rest of the secondary needs help with more of a pass rush. There’s help from the transfer portal at safety.
