Kansas State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

Can the running game get going again?

It’s not all that hard with Kansas State. It has to be in control of games by running the ball, it can’t rely on the passing attacks, and it has to keep things moving to help a defense that’s bad on third downs.

Texas Tech doesn’t care about the time of possession, and that’s Step One for the Wildcats. Step Two is to make sure that ball control matters by running and running some more, and Texas Tech allowed over 300 rushing yards in two of the last four games.

Kansas State is 3-0 when running for 200 yards, and 0-3 when going under.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Back to the third down thing – Kansas State has a hard time getting its defense off the field.

The offense doesn’t control third downs as much as it has to with a defense that allows offenses to convert 45% of their chances. After doing a good job early, K-State has allowed teams to convert 47% or more of their tries in each of the last four games.

The Texas Tech offense is a tad hit-or-miss, but when it converts its third down chances – it connected on 9-of-11 in the win over Kansas and it good on 49% of its chances on the year – it wins. The team is 4-0 when getting to 40%, and 0-2 when it doesn’t.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech will hit its third down conversions.

The offense has started to run better. The passing game is still the main mode of transportation, but the offense has mixed it up a bit over the last two weeks with Henry Colombi under center with over 200 yards on the ground.

It’ll be a fun back-and-forth game with the home side being a bit more effective and stronger at doing what it does.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Iowa State vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

After losses to Iowa and Baylor, the world might have blown off lumped in Iowa State with the other 2020 anomalies, but this is still a terrific team full of veterans, talent, and now, no pressure compared to about a month ago.

Completely forgotten is how the team is still very, very much in the Big 12 title chase.

Blowing away Kansas is hardly a signal of anything – granted, there still isn’t a decent win yet in 2020 – the Cyclones have had two weeks off, they still get  Texas and Oklahoma in Ames, and they get a shot at Oklahoma in late November.

In other words, blow off everything that happened in the first half of the year and prepare for the pivot.

The Kansas State offense has gone dead-silent on the ground over the last three games, the pass defense has been lit up, and there isn’t enough of a passing game to help the cause if the Cyclone D continues to be fantastic.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State has the defensive front to give the Iowa State offense a bad day.

The secondary might be giving up plenty of yards, but it’s not facing the most efficient of passing games. The Cyclone offensive line has been fine, but the attack isn’t converting on third downs and – again – it hasn’t been able to come through in the two big games that mattered.

The idea will be to make Brock Purdy win this. He was fantastic in last year’s blowout win, but he struggled in Manhattan in 2019 with a season-low 185 yards.

He’s been wildly inconsistent so far, and if he isn’t on, there’s going to be a problem getting the offense moving against a K-State run D that leads the Big 12, allowing 86 yards per game helped by the big plays behind the line.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is a strong Kansas State team that beat Stanford and Nevada and balled out in losses to undefeated Oklahoma and Oklahoma State teams, but this game is about Iowa State.

Can the Cyclones really wake up in time to get into the conference title hunt? did the time off and the light scrimmage against the Jayhawks be enough to get this whole thing going?

This week, yes.

The Iowa State offense is still going to be spotty, but the defense will make up for it by stuffing the Kansas State rushing attack and allowing fewer than 300 yards of total offense.

It’s not going to be anything pretty, but it’ll be a strong road win over a good team. This year, it’s a step for the Cyclones.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

No, the Oklahoma offense isn’t working like it’s supposed to, and this hasn’t been the dominant force everyone was expected, but it’s 4-0, it’s been pushed, and this might just be a case of getting through the early problems before it all starts to rock.

Last year at this time OU was 1-2 – with a loss to Kansas State – because of a massive turnover problem. The mistakes have been limited a bit with just three turnovers in the first four games.

Spencer Rattler has been fine. There were a few turnovers against Tulane, but he’s hitting 74% of his passes for an offense that’s been more about control than fury – and that’s okay.

The D is doing what it’s supposed to with a whole lot of sacks, takeaways, and big plays on third downs. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Oklahoma running game is just okay.

Rattler isn’t going to take off, and that’s sort of a problem for an attack that went ballistic when Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts were able to explode out of the backfield.

The running back tandem of Kennedy Brooks and Eric Gray are okay, but the Kansas State defensive front has been solid so far against the run – it’s not getting gouged and it should get to Rattler enough to matter. However …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Kansas State get steady play out of the quarterback?

Skylar Thompson might come back from a knee injury, but that’s a huge question mark. Will Howard struggled against Oklahoma State and got banged up, but Jaren Lewis stepped in and threw well enough to keep the game alive.

This will be on the Kansas State defense.

The Oklahoma offense would have to take things up a few levels to put this away with an explosive scoring day, and that’s not happening against a K-State D that keeps the game alive.

The Wildcats have won two straight in the series, and make it three with the Sooners failing to put the game away when they have a chance in the first half.

Kansas State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

It’s not like the offense didn’t miss a beat with Will Howard in at quarterback for an injured Skyler Thompson, but … it didn’t miss a beat in a somewhat stunning 38-17 win over Nevada.

Disrespected considering the good wins over the Wolf Pack and Stanford, the running game has been consistent, the offensive line has been strong, and the passing attack is just efficient enough to keep things moving.

This isn’t a big passing game – the downfield plays are there when they give it a shot – but the as long as the ground attack is effective and the defense can keep the strange Oklahoma State passing game under wraps, it might have this.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys have somehow found ways to win so far. They’ve managed to play up or down to their competition, but just when it seemed like they were ready to get nailed, they pulled off a 21-20 win over Boise State.

The passing game did nothing – it finished with 74 yards – but the offensive front was great for the ground game. Against Kansas State, they have to get the pass rush going early – the D has been great at getting behind the line – and the offensive side just has to feel out the game and go with what works.

Kansas State has to run to win. Oklahoma State has a slightly better ability to adapt to the momentum of the game.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be a fascinating fight to start to sort out the Big 12 pecking order. Oklahoma, Texas, and Iowa State all get the headlines, but the winner of this is quietly going to be in the chase even though the conference season is just getting started.

The Kansas State defense is going to be just a little more effective against the run, and the Oklahoma State passing attack isn’t going to do enough.

It’ll be tight throughout with the Cowboys once again figuring out how to pull out a close game – even though it won’t be anything pretty.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Kansas State (2-0) vs Nevada (2-0) Game Preview

Why Nevada Will Win

The offense has the pop and the chops to pull this off on the road. The team that was good enough to get by Cal in Berkeley can do this as long as Carson Strong is playing up to his upside.

The future NFL starting quarterback pulled off the win over the Bears, and then last week threw for 381 yards and four scores – just because – against Idaho State. He doesn’t have to bomb away on the Kansas State secondary, but as long as he’s not making mistakes – the Wolf Pack turned it over just once so far – that should be good enough.

And then it’s time to turn the defense loose.

The O is the key to the season, but the D is crushing with the pass rush. It’s all coming against a Kansas State backup who has experience, but Will Howard isn’t Skylar Thompson – who’s out for at least a few weeks with an injury.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas State Will Win

For all of the good things Nevada did to beat Cal, it’s not like the offense went totally off.

Strong and the passing game threw for over 300 yards, but there wasn’t much of a ground attack, and Cal whiffed on several tries with the game right here for the taking. Give the Nevada defense credit, but Kansas State has the ability to run that Cal doesn’t.

Like the Wolf Pack, the Wildcats can bring the heat with the pass rush, too. Howard can move and buy time. Strong isn’t a sitting duck, but he needs time to work.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s more of a gut-check time for the Big 12 team than you might think.

Kansas State has a whole slew of good defensive parts, and it’s being undervalued a bit in a conference with Oklahoma, Texas, and Iowa State getting all the oxygen.

As it was said at the time – at least by me – Stanford is much, much better than it looked in the 24-7 loss to Kansas State, and sure enough, it looked much, much better in a win over USC.

Not having Thompson hurt, but at home, the rest of the Wildcats will make up for it.
