Kansas State vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

That’s more like it.

Granted, the Green Wave haven’t played anyone fantastic so far, but there wasn’t the slightest blip against UMass and Alcorn State winning by a combined score of 94-10.

There’s decent balance so far, the run defense isn’t allowing any big gashes, and the pass defense hasn’t given up a thing.

Again, the competition has a lot to do with it, but allowing just 66 passing yards at a 36% completion rate in the first two games is good no matter what.

Kansas State has the third-worst passing offense in the nation so far and averages a miserable eight yards per throw. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Kansas State Will Win

Who needs to throw when you can run like Kansas State does?

Deuce Vaughn is doing Deuce Vaughn things over the first two games – 271 yards and three scores – Adrian Martinez is taking off when he needs to, and the ground game is rolling averaging six yards per carry with four touchdowns in each game.

Ripping up South Dakota was nice, but having few problems against Missouri showed just how solid this offensive front is right out of the gate.

There can’t be any mistakes against this team. Tulane has turned it over three times so far, Kansas State has picked off five passes, and this could get bad fast if the turnovers start coming.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

UMass and Alcorn State. Now it’s time to deal with the upgrade.

Tulane is better, it’s got the talent to give Kansas State a bit of a fight, but the run defense isn’t going to hold up like it needs to, and passing attack will struggle against the Wildcat secondary.

It won’t be a total wipeout, but it’ll turn into a methodically effective win as Kansas State keeps on looking like a sleeper in the upcoming Big 12 chase.

Missouri vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

Well hello, Mizzou offense.

The Tigers have the weapons in place, starting with the rise of QB Brady Cook, the running game has various options, and superstar freshman Luther Burden showed off his potential with a touchdown rushing and receiving in the 52-24 win over Louisiana Tech.

The Bulldogs of La Tech might be all about the passing game now, but it was still an impressive performance by the Tiger D allowing just 11 rushing yards helped by four sacks and nine tackles for loss.

The defensive front should be able to contain Kansas State QB Adrian Martinez, the offense will be balanced and dangerous – the O should travel just fine – and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Kansas State Will Win

Everything looked great in the warm-up.

Martinez was terrific with the very, very short passing game in the 34-0 win over South Dakota, Deuce Vaughn ran for 126 yards and a score, and the offense ran at will.

It doesn’t have the passing game to keep up if Missouri gets the offense rolling right away, but Martinez should be able to do a little of everything to keep the chains moving on the Mizzou linebackers.

The defensive front won’t give up anything close to the 323 rushing yards Louisiana Tech gave up last week.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Seriously, doesn’t this old school Big 12 matchup feel right?

It’s a massive moment for both programs. Kansas State has been fine under head coach Chris Klieman, but he’s 21-16 in just over three seasons and could use a big start with a strong home win.

Missouri head man Eliah Drinkwitz is just 12-12 at this gig and could really use this win considering what’s ahead in SEC play.

It’ll be a back-and-forth game that comes down to mistakes and big plays by the defense.

Missouri has more options and more ways to get things moving, the defense will slow down the Kansas State backfield in the second half, and it’ll all come down to a two takeaways and a late stop to get out alive.

Kansas State vs South Dakota Game Preview

Why South Dakota Will Win

The Coyotes are sound enough all the way around to make this interesting.

They’ve got a strong defense coming into 2022, the balance is there on offense, and they’ve got the lines to hold up.

They could use a little explosion in this, but they have the special teams to match was Kansas State does, the passing game will be efficient, and the defensive side has seven starters with veterans who should know what they’re doing to keep new Wildcat QB Adrian Martinez from taking off.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas State Will Win

Martinez should be the perfect fit for what the Kansas State coaching staff wants to do.

The offensive line will be improved and should take over the game right away, Deuce Vaughn is one of the nation’s best all-around backs, and Martinez will be dangerous when the Coyote linebackers worry about where 22 is.

South Dakota might be sound, but it’s not going to dominate the tempo or control the time of possession battle. Kansas State will be happy to get the explosion out of the backfield, but it’ll start out by running and running some more to keep the chains moving.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State will have moments when it’s a struggle and things don’t seem quite right, and then the big plays will come from the stars.

It’ll be a trickle of production that turns into a tidal wave. Just when it seems like things are bogging down, Martinez and Vaughn will each rip off big runs to take over.

2022 Preseason CFN Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year

RB Bijan Robinson, Jr. Texas

Okay, so he has been a bit more promise than actual production, but the superstar prospect has been outstanding when healthy, and now he should be the main man for a loaded Texas offense loaded with skill talent.

He’s got the size, quickness, and burst, running for 1,830 yards and 15 touchdowns with 41 catches and six scores in his first two years – but he can to a whole lot more. He’s an NFL starting running back hanging out in college, and now it’s salary drive time with a possible Heisman run along the way.

2022 Preseason CFN Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

DE Will McDonald, Sr. Iowa State

The Cyclones might be in a bit of a rebuilding mode, but the defense should still be terrific starting with they’re outstanding two-time First Team All-Big 12 – and 2021 All-American – pass rusher who’s back for his fifth season.

The 6-3, 236-pounder started out well in his first two seasons, and then blew up with 22 sacks and 26 tackles for loss over the last two seasons from his hybrid position on the outside.

Kansas State Wildcats Preview 2022

Kansas State was closer than it might have seemed to being deep in the hunt for big things.

Granted, life in the Big 12 is about winning the tight games to get out of the middle of the always even pack, but it didn’t get hammered in any of the five losses, slipped through enough wins to get bowling with ease, and then rolled a totally depleted LSU in the Texas Bowl.

The first three years under Chris Klieman have been solid for a program that’s used to being solid. Now what’s it going to take to be sensational and rise up and be in the Big 12 Championship mix?

This would be the year to do it.

Oklahoma is in a reboot and Texas is still trying to find itself – and then both of them are bolting.

The program knows how to fill in the parts instantly, it’s bringing in a dynamic veteran quarterback in Adrian Martinez, and there should be enough firepower to get that boost needed to win all those tight games.

2012 was the last time Kansas State won a piece of the Big 12 Championship, and it hasn’t won it outright since 2003. It’s about time to get back to that form, and it starts with …

Kansas State Wildcats Preview 2022: Offense

The Wildcats weren’t as bad offensively as the stats might make it seem, but they finished ninth in a ten team league averaging 362 yards per game, the running game was just okay, there was only an average of 28 points per game, and the 200 passing yards per outing were ninth in the conference. That’s all about to change if …

The offensive line has to rise up fast. The skill parts will be sneaky-great, and there’s talent at tackle around all-star Cooper Beebe, but the interior needs to be even stronger with three starters gone. Again, Kansas State always fills in the gaps.

The backs are in place to roll no matter what. The 5-6, 173-pound Deuce Vaughn is tough enough to handle the work coming off a 1,404-yard, 18-touchdown season. The depth is unproven, but the rushing production will also come from …

Adrain Martinez. He might not be the passer Skylar Thompson was, but he’s a veteran baller who threw for close to 8,500 yards and ran for over 2,300 with 35 scores in four years for Nebraska. He fits the offense, and so does backup Will Howard who can run, too.

The receiving corps is terrific. Vaughn led team with 49 catches, but Phillip Brooks is the top returning yardage receiver, Malik Knowles is a big all-conference caliber target, and there’s a little help coming from the transfer portal.

Kansas State Wildcats Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was better than the offense. It finished third in the Big 12, was good enough to hold on against the stronger passing teams, and it allowed just 21 points per game.

There are plenty of losses, and unlike the offense there’s a whole lot more instant talent coming in to play a big role. The back seven/eight in the alignment should be terrific once the transfers get used to their jobs, and the pass rush should be fine, but …

The overall developed depth is a bit of a question mark. That goes for the offensive side, too, but for now it’s about figuring out how to get the starting 11 up to speed and then all the other parts should fill in.

The line isn’t exactly a concern, but the tackles have to rise up around veteran Eli Huggins. The pass rush starts with Felix Anudike-Uzomah and gets veteran Nate Matlack in the mix, but again, the overall depth and options need work.

The linebacking corps should be fine with Will Honas a ready-made producer from Nebraska after missing all of last year with a knee injury. With  Honas on the outside and leading tackler Daniel Green back in the middle, Kansas State will have one of the best 1-2 hitting punches in the Big 12.

The secondary already has established corners in Julius Brents and Ekow Boye-Doe, and the safeties are getting reinforcements with former QB Shawn Robinson coming in from Missouri – he first started at TCU – and JUCO transfer Kobe Savage ready to go.

Big 12 Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Big 12 predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Big 12 preseason predictions were harder than ever to do.

While the world might be diving into the Big 12 expansion possibilities, don’t lose sight of what’s happening for this season – the league is going to be crazy-fun and totally wide open.

Warning: with these predictions, there will be at least one major miss – like last year with Baylor.

It seems like every year the Big 12 has at least seven teams that could finish anywhere in the pack – at least after Oklahoma – but this year it’s more like everyone but Kansas, and even it has the potential to be far better.

Oklahoma is hardly a sure thing to be on top, defending champion Baylor has a ton of tough road games, and TCU and Texas Tech – along with OU – are wild-cards with their new coaching staffs.

West Virginia should be more dangerous with Graham Harrell taking over as offensive coordinator. Texas has way too much talent to be mediocre. Texas Tech is an eight-win caliber program disguised as a team that’s going to struggle thanks rough non-conference games.

Iowa State isn’t going to fall off the map, right? Kansas State should be feisty with Adrian Martinez at quarterback, right?

There will be several twists and turns, and a whole slew of surprises – Kansas is going to win more than three games, but how you predict that?

So here we go. While the Big 12 is still a ten-team conference with Oklahoma and Texas still hanging around …
