TCU vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcats had two weeks off to rest up for this, and TCU has been through the ringer with nasty fights against Kansas and Oklahoma State.

Adaptable, Kansas State was able to get the running game going in shootouts over Oklahoma and Texas Tech, and it fought through a defensive fight to get by Iowa State 10-9. It’s going to be prepared for whatever is coming.

It helps that there aren’t a slew of mistakes. It’s the only team in college football that has yet to throw an interception.

The penalties are kept to a relative minimum, the O has turned it over just three times, and the defense takes care of the rest with third down stop after third down stop helped by enough of a pass rush to be consistently disruptive.

TCU doesn’t turn it over, either, but the D doesn’t come up with enough takeaways partly because the front is just okay at getting into the backfield.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why TCU Will Win

The TCU offense is humming.

The passing game is averaging well over 300 yards over the last five games, the running game is rolling for over six yards per carry, and it all methodically works on the way to being third in the nation in total yards.

Veteran QB Max Duggan is Heisman-talk-worthy, hitting 70% of his passes with 16 touchdowns and just one interception, he’s running well as the steady leader who keeps coming through when needed.

The defense will give up yards in this – it allowed three touchdown runs in three of the last four games – but it’s been solid at keeping big passing games from being consistent.

However …

– Game Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

No excuses – TCU has been brilliant – but …

Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel got knocked out of the game early, Kansas QB Jalon Daniels had to leave the game, and Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders was apparently playing with a shoulder injury. That obviously mattered, but none of those three starting quarterbacks play defense.

The Kansas State defense is good enough to hold serve to keep TCU from going off, but Duggan and company will keep pressing. This will be a wild back-and-forth fight coming down to who has the ball last.

The home team will.

Kansas State vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Kansas State State Will Win

For what he does, who’s playing better than Adrian Martinez over the last few weeks?

Against Oklahoma and Texas Tech he hit 62% of his passes with two touchdowns and no picks – he has yet to throw an interception this year – and ran for 319 yards and seven touchdown. Throw in the 286 rushing yards from Deuce Vaughn over those two games, and this is how the Kansas State offense is supposed to work.

There’s nothing wrong with Iowa State’s defense. It’s the best in the Big 12 against the run, it’s not allowing much of anything through the air, and it’s No. 1 in the conference in total defense and scoring D. However, it’s 3-0 when allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards, and 0-2 when Baylor and Kansas hit the 100-yard mark.

Kansas State will get to 100 yards and will have no problems making this a low scoring grind if needed.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Iowa State Will Win

Yeah, all that about the defense, and the offense isn’t bad, either.

The stats are messed up thanks to the offensively-challenged win over Iowa and a surprising 14-11 slugfest loss to Kansas last week, but the passing game is more than fine and the ground game was solid until the last two weeks.

On the flip side of the 100-yard rushing thing, along with losing both games when the defense gave up triple digits the offense also failed to hit the mark. Kansas rose up and stuffed the Cyclones, and it was a struggle to get going against the Bears. Kansas State’s defense is solid, but it’ll give up well over 100 yards on the ground in this.

The Wildcats feed off of multiple takeaways, but as long as the Cyclones limit the errors to two they should be okay, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

As good as Iowa State’s defense is, it’s not forcing a ton of turnovers lately. It came up with three in the bad conditions against Iowa and it got four against Ohio, but it came up with just one in the last two games.

Kansas State will get enough out of the passing game to mix things up a little bit, but the Iowa State defense will keep the gashing runs to a minimum.

At home and coming off a tough loss, the Cyclones will be on the right side of a thriller – the kicking game will come through this week.

Texas Tech vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The passing game worked when it had to.

It didn’t do quite enough to overcome four turnovers in the loss to NC State, but it didn’t give the ball away to Texas, Donovan Smith was strong throwing for 331 yards and two scores in the 37-34 overtime win, and it should all work against a Kansas State defense coming off a rough day.

For all for the great things Adrian Martinez and the Wildcat offense were able to do in the 41-34 win over Oklahoma, the secondary allowed 330 yards and four scores.

The pass K-State D was solid for the first part of the season, but Smith is starting to settle in, the Red Raider defense has been doing its job against the run, and there’s no fear of any downfield passing game from Martinez.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Kansas State Will Win

Can Kansas State inflict its will on the Red Raider defense?

Martinez and RB Deuce Vaughn are a deadly 1-2 rushing punch for an O that leads the Big 12 averaging 248 yards per game on the ground. In the three wins the offense came up with 235 rushing yards or more with four scores, and it didn’t work in the weird 17-10 loss to Tulane.

The Green Wave was able to keep the Wildcats from busting anything loose, but Texas Tech’s defense doesn’t have enough up front to keep Martinez and Vaughn from getting into space.

Yes, the Red Raider defense is solid, but it had a hard time with Texas star Bijan Robinson last week, and this week …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes Vaughn.

Martinez won’t be totally taken away, but Texas Tech will look to take him out first. Vaughn will do the heavy lifting with over 20 carries and well over 100 yards.

Both defenses are great on third downs, and both offense struggle on third downs, but Kansas State will be able to do what it does a little better than Texas Tech will do what it likes to do.

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

What the heck was that?

Where was the Kansas State that dominated Missouri and looked like it was about to make a big run in the Big 12? That could still happen – it was a 17-10 loss to Tulane that obviously doesn’t matter in Big 12 play – and now the running game has to get working again.

The offense isn’t screwing up with just two turnovers and minimal penalties so far, the defense has been terrific on third downs – it’s third in the nation in passing efficiency defense – and overall the team is +5 in turnover margin.

Yes, Oklahoma has been great over the first three weeks, but it hasn’t actually played anyone with a pulse.

UTEP, Kent State, and yeah, Nebraska. Kansas State represents a massive step up in competition, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Oklahoma Will Win

What do you do against inferior competition? You drill them in easy games that get everything sharpened up for what’s coming.

Oklahoma has been close to flawless to start the Brent Venables era. It’s not the flashy team of the Lincoln Riley era, but the defense has been nasty and there hasn’t been a hint of drama so far.

One turnover. The Sooners lost a fumble against Nebraska, and like Kansas State, penalties aren’t an issue.

The pass rush and defensive front should be able to live in the Wildcat backfield, the run defense that’s allowing 2.8 yards per carry should be solid, and considering there’s little to no passing game to worry about, the secondary should be able to cheat up enough to make a difference.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State has a funky style that could make this interesting.

It’s not going to screw up, and it’s going to hold the ball for over 35 minutes. However, the OU defense is playing well, there’s absolutely no downfield passing attack coming from Martinez, and the balance of the Sooner offensive O should be too much to overcome.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 3

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Prediction, Line

Oklahoma 34, Kansas State 17
Line: Oklahoma -12.5, o/u: 52.5
ATS Confidence out of 5: 3
Oklahoma vs Kansas State Must See Rating (out of 5): 3
